Nail

George Howard Nail, 79, of Liberty, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at Liberty Health Care Center in Liberty, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 23, 2004 at the First Baptist Church, in Liberty, Texas, with Reverend Jerry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Cooke Memorial cemetery in Liberty. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 22, 2004 from 5 PM until 8 PM at Allison Funeral Service in Liberty, Texas.

Mr. Nail was born on April 30, 1925, in Carthage, TX. to parents, George Homer Nail and Luella Marshall. Mr. Nail married Lois Mae Ball on June 7, 1952. Mr. Nail had lived in the Liberty area for fifty-four years. He retired from Liberty Independent School District after thirty-six years of service as a teacher, and school administrator. He enjoyed quilting and family geneology.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and four sisters, Agnes Reed, Bernice Johnson, Sybil Langford, and Anna Nail

He is survived by his wife, Lois Mae “Sue” Nail, and two sons, George Michael Nail and his wife Katherine, and Steven Fred Nail and his wife Joyce Ann; two brothers, Watson Roland Nail, and Walter Leon Nail; one sister, Grace Bleimeyer, and three grandchildren, Christopher Michael Nail, Jennifer Katherine Nail, and Cameron Travis Nail.

Mahaffey

Terry Lynn Mahaffey, 47, of Liberty, Texas died at her home on Friday, December 17, 2004.

Terry was born on March 20, 1957 in Dallas, Texas to parents, Charles Dupree and the late Ruby Comstock.

She was a long time resident of Palestine, Texas and was a beautician at Laurels Hair Fashion in Houston, Texas for fifteen years. She moved back to Liberty in late 2002 to be close to her daughter and two grandchildren.

She was a Christian, and helped everyone in any way she could.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Comstock, and her sister Jeanette.

She leaves her brother, William Reeves, one daughter, Tara Jeanette Mahaffey, two grandchildren, Noble Mathew Mahaffey and Teddrick Daniel Bankhead and a host of other relatives and friends.

Tara Mahaffey would like to thank everyone for the love and support during this time of bereavement.

Faulkner

Una D. “Peggy” Faulkner, 79, of Dayton, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at Northeast Medical Center in Humble.

She was born July 22, 1925 in Wilsey, Kansas to parents, Ezra G. and Bessie M. Davison. She graduated from Wilsey High School in 1942 and moved to Dayton in 1956. She was member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Joy Club and the Women’s Club of Dayton. Through the years she worked as the church secretary for 10 years, at Dayton State Bank, and First Liberty National Bank.

Mrs. Faulkner was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 58 years, A. V. Faulkner.

Coleman

Jack Coleman, 66, of Houston, died Monday, December 13, 2004 at his home.

He was a native of New York, a longtime resident of Houston, a logistics engineer and a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by: Wife: Irene Coleman of Houston; Daughter: Christa Hardin and her husband Randy of Dayton; Son: Michael Coleman and his wife Kristene of Houston; Granddaughters: Sammie Jo Coleman and Cara Coleman; Step-Grandchildren: Jason Hardin and his wife Terri, Courtney Hardin and Randa Jo Hardin and Step-Great-Grandson: Ryan Hardin.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2004 at the Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. A private family service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that phone-cards be purchased, for our servicemen overseas, through your local Post Office.

Finklea

Juanita Roberta Bloomfield Finklea, age 86, of Hull, TX, died Sunday, December 12, 2004 in a local nursing home.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday December 14, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Pentecostal Church of Daisetta, TX, with the Rev. Lonnie Jordan officiating, burial will follow in the Guedry cemetery in Batson, TX. A visitation was held on Monday, December 13, 2004 at the church from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

She was born in Saratoga, TX, on August 6, 1918 to Robert Julius Bloomfield and Mable Clair Hendricks Bloomfield. Mrs. Finklea was a nurse, (LVN), and had worked for many years in the health care field. Mrs. Finklea was one of the best cooks in the county and she loved working in her garden. She was a member of the Cornerstone Church for many years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and husband: Warren A. Finklea. Survivors are two sons: Kenneth E. ‘Andy’ Anderson and wife Gwen of Hull, and James ‘Jim” Anderson and wife Linda Estelle Anderson of Hull, three grandchildren: Carrie LaJuan Anderson Hickman and husband Deac of Hull, TX, Mandi Lynn Anderson of Hull, TX, and Holly Jo Anderson Ferguson and husband Chad of Hull, TX. and five great grandchildren: B. J. Meche, Chace Hickman, Alyssa Ferguson, Mia Ferguson, and Jon-Eli Ferguson.

Benbow

Thad W. Benbow, age 93, of Liberty, TX, died Monday December 13, 2004, in a local hospital.

A native of Alpine, Alabama, he was born on October 13, 1911 to Willie and Della Belle Hurtt Benbow. Graveside funeral service were held on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 in the Palm Memorial Park, Dayton, TX at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Davis officiating.

Mr. Benbow was a Christian and a carpenter. He enjoyed working in his garden and could grow just about anything.

He is preceded in death by his parents, by most of his brothers and sisters, and his wife: Lillian Mae Thompson Benbow. Mr. Benbow is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Darrel and Terri Benbow of Liberty, Daniel and Vickie Benbow of Plano, TX, and David Benbow of Broken Bow, OK., and a brother: Ira Benbow of CA., ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Pate

James Vernon Pate, Sr., 81, of Oak Island, died at his home on December 12, 2004.

A native of Broaddus, Texas he had been a resident of Oak Island for the past 45 years.

He was born December 22, 1923 to parents Lonnie and Ester Pate. Before retirement, Mr. Pate drove trucks and did mechanic work. In his early years he was an avid hunter and now loved to garden and fish. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at Palms Memorial Park cemetery in Dayton under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Thelma Pate of Oak Island; Step-Mother: Mabel Pate of Baytown; Sons: James Vernon Pate, Jr. of Oak Island, Richard Vernon Pate and wife Linda of Anahuac; Daughters: Shirley Ann Russell of Oak Island, Betty Jackson and husband Tommy of Oak Island; Half-brother: David Pate of Oklahoma and Half-sister: Louse Dunman of Anahuac; Five Grandchildren and Eight Great-Grandchildren.

Brothers

Steven J. Brothers, 31, of Silsbee, died Saturday, December 11, 2004, in Tyler County.

Funeral services will be held at 2 Pm, Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Palms Memorial Park in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Steven was born August 16, 1973 in Dayton, to parents; Ronnie and Patricia Gallagher Brothers, a former resident of Beaumont, and has resided in the Silsbee area for seven years. He was a graduate of the Hardin-Jefferson High School class of 1991, a correctional officer for TDCJ in Livingston, and enjoyed horses, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and the outdoors in general.

Mr. Brothers was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Patrick A. Gallagher. He is survived by his daughter: Dusti Rena Brothers of Kountze, parents: Ronnie and Patricia Gallagher Brothers of Navasota, brother: Scotty W. Brothers of Austin, maternal grandmother: Vicki Gallagher of Schroeder, paternal grandparents: Billy, Sr. and Margaret Brothers of Dayton, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Williams

Bennie H. Williams, 89, of Dayton, died Saturday, December 11, 2004, at the Liberty-Dayton Hospital in Liberty.

Graveside services will be held at 2 Pm, Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories in Houston. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Monday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Bennie was born February 18, 1915 in Spring Valley, to parents; John and Augusta Brant Williams, a former resident of Houston, and has resided in the Dayton area for the past 18 years. He was a retired supervisor from Riviana Foods of Houston after 30 years of service, former carpenter, graduate of the Spring Branch High School, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing horse shoes.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Gladys L. Carpenter Williams, and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughters: Ruth Pittman of Dayton, Bennie Sucre and husband Ricardo of Dayton, and Doris Horner of Longview, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Finley

Harrison Kirk “Buddy” Finley, Jr., age 69, died Friday December 10, 2004 at his home in Hardin, Texas.

A native of Cody, TX, he was born on August 1, 1935 to Harrison K. Finley, Sr., and Ora Estelle Walker Finley. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2004 at 2:00 p.m., at Allison Funeral Service 1101 North Travis Street Liberty, Texas 77575 with the Reverend Bob Morgan officiating, burial will follow in the Hardin Chapel cemetery in Hardin, TX.

A visitation will be held on Saturday December 11, 2004 at Allison from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. He married Patricia Ann Tinkle on January 22, 1958 in Liberty, TX.

Buddy was a production supervisor in the oil field, He enjoyed his Wednesday night games and he was looking forward to just one more deal.

Buddy is preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters. Buddy is survived by his wife: Patricia Ann Finley, of the home, children: Bruce and Becky Finley of Liberty, TX, James Finley of Galveston, TX, and Road Ann and Chris Blanchard of Hardin, TX, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Pontiff

Miss Mildred Pontiff, age 98, died at her home in Liberty, TX, on Thursday, December 9, 2004.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 2:00 P. M. at Allison Funeral Service 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, Texas 77575, with the Reverend David A. Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the Liberty Catholic cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 10, 2004 at Allison Funeral Service from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. She was also lovingly known as Nanny to many of her nieces and nephews, was born in Chacahoula, Louisiana on October 16, 1906 to Euzelien Pontiff and Octavie Navarre Pontiff. She graduated from high school in Houma, LA. She graduated from South Louisiana University in Lafayette, LA. At that time it was called SLI. Upon graduating she began her teaching career. She taught for many years in a one room country school, teaching grades 1-5. When the school was eliminated, she and her students had to move to the school in town. She taught there for four more years before retiring due to hearing loss.

In 1988 she and her sister sold their family home and moved to Liberty, Texas because of advancing age and to be near their family. Although handicapped since birth with a cripple arm, she loved tending to her plants and garden. She also was a talented seamstress that lovingly sewed many clothes for her family throughout the years. Along with her sewing talent, she also crocheted many heirloom pieces that will be treasured by her loved one for many years to come. She and her sister and a group of ladies friends traveled over the years to visit every state within the continental United States and also in Canada. She collected souvenirs from every location they visited. She loved working word puzzles and playing cards, also watching her favorite TV show, “Wheel of Fortune”.

Miss Mildred never married but was much loved by her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents: Euzelien and Octavie Navarre Pontiff, her sister: Velma Pontiff Block, and her brother Lucius Pontiff. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Liberty, TX.

She is survived by her niece: Linda Block Barnes and her children; Lori and David Tidwell, Tine and Karl Kibodeaux, Dale and Misty Barnes, Glen Barnes and their families: Dawn, Ken, and Garrett Marquis, David Robin and Kael Kibodeaux and Trey Hall, Tabitha Kibodeaux, Sgt. John David Westbrook, Daniel and Luke Barnes. Her Louisiana family of nieces and nephews, Lorraine Richard, Alvin Pontiff, Lawrence Pontiff, Lucius Pontiff, Jr., and their families also survive her.

She was a very thoughtful and loving aunt to all of them, finding special ways to help and assist and bless them all. “Nanny” we love you and will miss you and though we may be weeping, we also rejoicing that you are in heaven in your renewed body, where you will no longer need a hearing aid and will be able to embrace all your loved ones with both opened arms when we meet you again, It will be a blessed reunion!
