Weathersby

Mr. Robert L. Weathersby, 89, of Dayton passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2004 in Liberty after an extended illness.

He was a native and longtime resident of Dallas. Before moving to Dayton four years ago, Mr. Weathersby had lived 15 years in Corisicana. He was retired from Fort Worth Steel where he was a wooden pattern maker. He continued his wonderful talents with wood into his retirement, carving many items including mantels for his daughters, a cradle and many carved birds.

Graveside service for Mr. Weathersby will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 21, 2004 at Grove Hill cemetery in Dallas.

Weathersby is preceded in death by wife Ruby; daughter: Pat Vines and brother: C.E. Weathersby. He is survived by daughter: Pam Weathersby Brown and husband Bernie of Dayton; brother: Jerry Langbine; grandchildren: Jennifer Brown Davis and husband Ken, Brian Brown, Gregg Vines, and Glenn Vines; great-grandchildren: Jamie Vines, Jason Vines, Jacob Vines, and Jimmy Vines; 2 nephews: Paul Weathersby and Steve Weathersby.

Gilley

William F. Gilley 85, of Tarkington, passed away Monday morning in Cleveland.

A native of Moran, Texas he was born to parents Alonzo Wilson and Elsie Davis Gilley on April 18, 1919. He had retired from working in Forestry. Mr. Gilley loved being outdoors, in his garden and visiting with friends and family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years and attended Simmons Bottom Assembly of God Church.

Service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton with Rev. Lyndol Kinser and Kristal Alldredge officiating. Interment will follow at Ryan cemetery in Tarkington Prairie.

Mr. Gilley is survived by his wife of 63 years Nola E. Gilley of Tarkington.

Sons: Wilson Cleon Gilley and wife Pixie of Robert Lee, Texas and Wendell De Layne Gilley and wife Deborah of Cleveland; Daughter: Frances E. Crocker and husband George of Dayton; Brother Lonnie R.V. Gilley of Cleveland; Sister: Bernice Havard of Cleveland; 9 grandchildren; 2 adopted grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation for Mr. Gilley will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton, Texas.

Thomas

Infant Fallyn Kay Aryanne Thomas, of Baytown, passed away on Thursday at a Baytown Hospital. Visitation will be held from 3pm-9pm on Monday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Graveside services and interment will be held at 3pm on Tuesday at Reeves cemetery in Old River.

Fallyn is survived by her mother Brandie Thomas of Baytown, father Chevy Parnell of Channelview, step-father Jamie Loveall of Channelview, her 2 big sisters, Kristin Elizabeth Mann and Amanda Lee Thomas of Baytown, her mimi, Beth Scarberry of Baytown, grandmother Becky Wilson, great-grandmother, Sandra Martin, great-grandparents William and Carolyn Pillow, great-grandmother June Parnell, aunts, Chylee Deville and Shelbie Scarberry, great aunts Kim Lewis and Gabby Shows, uncles Justin Wilson, Shane Wilson and Christopher Hoffman, cousin Gil Pagan IV, godmother Bryanne Holloway and husband Danny Crump and her special friends Walter and Brandie Childress, Charlotte Ratcliff, Candie York, Amanda Rhineburger, Dixie Pond, William and Amanda Dillard, Janet Barnett, Shane Fisher, Donna Mann, David Gust and Sassi Bordelon.

Paxton

Billy Harlow Paxton, age 76, of Hull, TX, passed away August 13, 2004 at the St Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, TX.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2004 at 2:00 P. M., in the United Pentecostal Church on Oak Street in Daisetta, TX, with the Rev. Lonnie Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in the Moss Hill Community cemetery. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., at the United Pentecostal Church in Daisetta, TX.

Mr. Paxton was born April 10, 1928, in Hull, TX. He was a graduate of Hardin High School in 1946 and married his wife, Etta V. Hopson, of 57 years on June 8, 1947. He lived in Hull his entire life.

He worked as a pumper at a local Cleveland company and several years for the Santa Fe Drilling Company as a tool pusher/driller in the Gulf of Mexico. He also worked overseas in Trinidad. In 1969, he started his career as a commercial shrimper and worked side by side with his wife for 13-1/2 years. Amazingly, he designed and built several boats during his career as a shrimper.

Billy was well knowned for his carpentry skills, and in building of kitchen cabinets. He designed and was a master carpenter of the Daisetta United Pentecostal Church. He was loved dearly by his family and friends. He will be well remembered by his special smile, his wide array of jokes, his positive attitude, and all of the lives he touched.

Mr. Paxton was preceded in death by his parents: William Washington Paxton and Nettie May Williamson Paxton, a sister: Evelyn May Paxton.

He is survived by his wife: Etta V. Paxton, of the home, daughters: Janice Kay Shipman and husband Melvin, of Hull, TX, Linda Darlene Boone and husband Carter, of Sugarland, TX, a brother-in-law: Clifford Hopson and wife Sandy, of Hardin, TX, and five grandchildren: Kelvin Wayne Shipman, Kasey Paxton Shipman, Jenny Lin Heidrick, Ashley Lin Boone, and Heather Nicole Black.

Arrangements are under the direction of Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis, Liberty, Texas 77575.

Barron

Dortha Fay Barron, 74, of Dayton, passed away at her home on Thursday afternoon. Funeral Services will be held at 3pm on Saturday at the Faith Tabernacle in Tarkington. Pastor Ken Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park in Dayton.

Dortha was born on August 5, 1930 in Bochita, OK to parents William Simpson Wingo and Allie Smith. She had been a resident of Dayton for the last 8 years. She was a member of the Faith Tabernacle in Tarkington. In her spare time se enjoyed crafting, knitting, crochet, and needlework. She loved to visit and talk with friends and family.

Dortha was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ollie Lawrence Cheney, daughter Cynthia Janette Landers and brothers Alvin Jay Wingo and Robert Wingo.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 23 years DeWitt Barron of Dayton, sons, Earl Devon Cheney and wife Karen of Spring, Edward Daniel Cheney of San Antonio, Lawrence Ray Cheney and wife Diane of San Antonio, Mitchell Wendell Cheney of Conroe and Michael Warren Cheney of Spring, daughter, Allie Darlene Heugatter of Dayton, step-daughters Barbara Cellum and husband Tom of Highlands and Sandra Rainey and husband Joe of Highlands, step-son David Barron of Dayton, daughter-in-law Karen Cheney of Irving, brothers Albert Wingo and wife Joyce of Houston, Leroy Wingo and wife Betty of Houston, Dub Wingo and wife Georgine of Dayton and George Wingo and wife Kay of Deer Park and sister Arlene Woods and husband Dale of Allen.

She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Sowell

Leslie Kevin Sowell, 43, of Dayton, passed away on Thursday at a Houston hospital. Visitation will be held from 5pm-9pm on Saturday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm on Sunday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton.

Kevin was born on August 28, 1960 in Houston to parents John Sowell and Shirley Webb. Kevin was a carpenter and true craftsman. He loved to work with his hands and could build beautiful things. He was also an accomplished taxidermist. Baptist by faith, Kevin was a very giving person who was fun to be around and got along with everyone. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and hiking whenever he could.

Kevin was preceded in death by his father and uncle Arthur Simmons. He is survived by his son Kevin Scott Sowell of Dayton, brother Chris Sowell and wife Karen of Seattle, WA, nephew Russell Sowell of Seattle and niece Candice DeLeon of Dayton.

Whatley

Woodrow Wilson Whatley, 88, of Crosby, passed away on Wednesday at Liberty-Dayton Community Hospital.

Visitation will be held from 5pm-9pm on Friday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm on Saturday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Private interment services will be held on Monday at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet, TX.

Mr. Whatley was born on December 10, 1915 in Cass County, TX to parents Lex Whatley and Florence Moore. He was a welder by trade who worked as a ship builder and pipe fitter for several years. He was a member of Pipe Fitters Local #211. He was also a Master Mason and member of the Galena Park Masonic Lodge. He was a kind and gentle person who was a friend to everyone he met. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time.

Mr. Whatley was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife of over 60 years Willa Dean Whatley, daughters Carolyn Bryant and Brenda Whatley, brother O. B. Whatley, sister Avinell Clark and grandson Allen Bryant. He is survived by his son R.P. Whatley and wife Betty of Crosby, daughter Patricia Marine and husband Herman of Temple, sisters Louise Shelton of Denton, Eunice May Lewis of Henderson, and brothers Carson Whatley of Atlanta, Lex Whatley Jr. of Smithland and Glenn Whatley of Lodi. Mr. Whatley is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Norcross

Dovie B. Norcross, 89, of Dayton passed away at her home, Tuesday, August 10, 2004.

A native of Lovelady, Texas, Mrs. Norcross had lived in Dayton since 1924. She graduated from Dayton High School in 1932 and attended Mary Hardin Baylor, Lamar University, and Lee College. She taught 18 years for Dayton I.S.D. Mrs. Norcross was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dayton where she was the Historian of the church and wrote the history of Dayton First United Methodist. She was also instrumental in organizing the Dayton United Methodist Women in which she was a life member. She was a55 year member Dayton O.E.S.; a Past Matron of the Dayton 233 O.E.S; Charter member of District 4, Section 4 P.M.P.P Club and Past Grand Rep. of Massachusetts in Texas; member of the Pioneer Student Association of D.H.S. and member Linney cemetery Association.

Service for Mrs. Norcross, will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2004 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Barnes officiating. Interment will follow at Linney cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Walter R. Norcross; daughter: Leah Norcross Berry; sisters: Ina Mae Croft, Tommie Cude Frosco, and Mary Abshire. She is survived by her son: Jimmie Walter Norcross, Sr. of Flippen, Arkansas; brother: T. A. Cude and five grandchildren: Shawn Berry, Mark Berry, Leah Schaatt, Jimmie Norcross, Jr. and Leslie Chambers; and nine great-grandchildren.

For those who desire memorials may be made to the Dayton Pioneer Club or the Jones Library.

Visitation will be Friday, August 13, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

Gardener

Annie Katherine “Kathy” Gardener, 69, of Liberty, passed away at Liberty Health Care Center in Liberty on Sunday morning. Graveside services and interment will be held at 2pm on Wednesday at East Sandy cemetery in New Waverly under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Kathy was born on October, 12, 2004 in Houston to parents Sidney Delbert Gardener and Sarah Mittie Sandel. She had lived for the last 30 years at Magnolia Place in Liberty where she became well known to the other residents and visitors alike. She loved to eat and had a particular love of Dr. Pepper.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister Marie Kanoy and husband Bruce of Kenefick and brother S.D. Gardener and wife Twyla of Kingwood. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews.

Coker

Betty Coker, 62, of Liberty, passed away Friday, August 6, 2004 at the Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

She was a native of Daisetta, and lived all of her life in the Liberty area. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the Hardin Chapel cemetery in Hardin with Rev. Alfred Smith officiating.

She is survived by: Son: O‚Neal Tanton, Jr. and his wife Verna of Liberty; Daughter: Sarah Louise Fregia and her husband Billy Roy of Liberty; Brothers: Charles Coker and his wife Mary of Hull, Donald Coker of Zapata and James Coker and his wife Glenda of Ozark, Arkansas; Sister: Dorothy Tanton of Liberty; Grandchildren: Derik Johnson, Sr. and his wife Amanda, Tina Johnson, Crystal Johnson, Marvin Ray Jackson, Jr. and LaShawn Tanton all of Liberty; Great-Grandchild: Derik Lynn Johnson, Jr. of Liberty and numerous Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by: Parents: Lawrence Alton Coker and Colon Renfro Coker and her Husband: Harriett Tanton, Sr. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Fox

Norma Jean Fox, age 58, died at her home in Daisetta, TX, Monday August 2, 2004.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 6, 2004 at 10:00 A. M., at the Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, Texas 77575, with burial following in the Guedry cemetery in Batson, Texas with Bishop Kevin Taylor officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2004 from 5:00 P. M. until 8:00 P. M. at Allison Funeral Service.

Norma was a native of Waynesville, PA. She married Carl Edward Fox on August 12, 1966, in Waynesville, PA. She and Carl moved to Daisetta, from Crosby, TX. last June. Norma Jean was a homemakers homemaker and loved her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, of 37 years, Carl E. Fox, of Daisetta, TX, sons and daughter-in-law, Arron B. Fox and wife, Shannon Fox, James Edward Robinson, daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Hatfield, Jacqueline Hess and husband, Richard, Carla Thomae and husband, Elton, a brother and sister-in-law, Jack Cumberledge and wife Sue, sister and brother-in-law, Donna Miller and husband Eugene, seven grandchildren, Christopher Hatfield, J. R. Hatfield, Ashley Fox, Melanie Lofton, Willie Lofton, Brody Lofton, and Michael Fox, one great grandson, Ethen Hatfield. And a host of other relatives and friends.
