Juanita Murphey Mays

Services for Juanita Murphey Mays, 80, of Slocum, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Slocum Union Church with the Revs. Todd Chapman and Howard Huhn officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Mays died Sunday at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.
She was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Zwolle, La. to Joseph Hugh and Alma Gladys Winham Murphey.
Mrs. Mays was a Methodist. She was a teacher and had taught at Westwood, Elkhart and Slocum independent school districts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Mays, in 1985; daughter, Cindy Mays; son, Roy Mays; sister, Gladys DeMoss; and brothers, Abe Murphey, Archie Murphey and Edward “Duke” Murphey.
Mrs. Mays is survived by daughter, Jenny Cunningham of Slocum; sons, Johnny Mays, Ronny Mays, David Mays and Danny Mays, all of Slocum; brother, Joseph Murphey Jr. of Longview; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Mays, Ronny Mays, David Mays, Danny Mays, Sonny Mays, Ron Mays, Neil Mays, Heath Mays and Clayton Mays.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Slocum Union Church.

Mildred Juanita Ivey

Services for Mildred Juanita Ivey, 62, of Jewett, were held Friday at Buffalo Funeral Home with the Rev. James Engle officiating. A graveside service and interment were held later that day at Brookside Cemetery in Houston.
Mrs. Ivey died April 30 at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan following a long illness.
She was born Dec. 1, 1939, in Lott to E.W. and Mildred Vaughan Thomas.
Mrs. Ivey graduated from Northside High School in Houston. She worked as a waitress most of her life and was a Baptist by faith. She moved to Jewett from Porter.
She was preceded in death by her father; and her husband, William Max Ivey.
Mrs. Ivey is survived by her mother, Mildred Vaughan Landers of Houston; sons, Joel Max Ivey and Robert Floyd Ivey, both of Milano, Mark Wayne Ivey of Jewett and Shaun Lee Ivey of Acherman, Miss.; brothers, Jimmy Landers and Wendell Landers, both of Houston; sister, Jeanette Lobue of Porter; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Danny Lobue, Larry Lobue, Kenny Lobue, Jimmy Landers Jr., Danny Brown and John Gilbreath.
Honorary pallbearers were J.T. Orand, Billy Ivey, Whitley Ivey, Colby Ivey, Brady Ivey and Brook Morgan.

Hardin Walker

Services for Hardin Walker, 44, of Grapeland, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Rising Star Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery under the direction of Emanuel Funeral Home.
Mr. Walker died Sunday at East  Texas Medical Center in Tyler.
He was born May 29, 1958 in Grapeland to Sammie Lee and Magnolia Bonner Walker.
Mr. Walker attended W.R. Banks School.
He is survived by brothers, Sammie Lee Walker and Turman Walker, both of Houston, and Wilson Walker of Nacogdoches; sisters, Laurretta Warfield and Addie Smith, both of Grapeland, and Carolyn Yates and Nolia Mae Savoy, both of Houston.

Irene Grigsby

Funeral arrangements for Irene Grigsby, 79, of Elkhart, are pending at Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Grigsby died Friday at Cartmell Home for Aged.

Florence “Fritz” Gunnels

Services for Florence “Fritz” Gunnels, 85, of Elkhart, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Myrtle Springs Cemetery with Perry  Jones officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Gunnels died Thursday at Dogwood Trails Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 5, 1916 in Anderson County to L.C. and Bessie Coleman Till.
Mrs. Gunnels was a homemaker and a member of Church of Christ in Elkhart.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Gunnels, in 1996.
Mrs. Gunnels is survived by her daughter, Reba Gunnels Whitley of Palestine; sons, John D. Gunnels of Houston and Gary Gunnels of Elkhart; sister, Ivie Rutledge of Elkhart; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mike Whitley, Scott Delk, Craig McAdams, Kanon Pardue, Carl Rutledge and Ronny Steadman.
Honorary pallbearers are Harold Steadman, Dale Till, Rick Braly and Marty Martinez.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Lou Hartley

Services for Mary Lou Hartley, 84, of McGregor, and formerly of Palestine, will be at 3 p.m. today at Land of Memory Cemetery with the Rev. Lyle Huntress officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Hartley died Thursday in Westview Manor Nursing Home in McGregor.
She was born Oct. 21, 1917 in Houston County to Joseph Monroe and Ethel Kelley McVey.
Mrs. Hartley was a Baptist. She waitresses and was a partner and operator of the Spanish Village Cafe in Palestine for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hartley, in 1980.
Mrs. Hartley is survived by sisters, Jean Beeman and Sylvin Lindeman, both of Waco.

Jennie V. Selden

Services for Jennie V. Selden, 90, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jeff Cover officiating. Burial will follow in the New Addition Annex to City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Selden died Thursday morning at Cartmell Home for Aged.
She was born Feb. 8, 1912, in Palestine to Benjamin F. and Rose Pettit Jordan.
Mrs. Selden was retired from Missouri-Pacific Railroad and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry B. Selden; brother, W.B. Jordan; and sisters, Evelyn DuPree, Beatrice Scarborough and Clarice Ward.
Mrs. Selden is survived by daughter, Sherea Sue Sumrall of Palestine; son, Harry B. Selden Jr. of Palestine; brother, Robert E. Jordan of Palestine; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Jack Selden, Larry Selden, Don Selden, Ron Selden, Worth Andrews, Bob Burroughs and Roger Henderson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Arkansas Gazette, Ben Scarborough, Glen  Woods and Arnold Hudson.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 410 Avenue A, P.O. Box 1183, Palestine,  Texas, 75802-1188; or Cartmell Home for Aged, 2212 W. Reagan, Palestine,  Texas, 75801.

Glen Mattern

Services for Glen Mattern, 45, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Evangelistic Temple with Dr. Barry Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Hill Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mr. Mattern died Monday night at his residence.
He was born Oct. 16, 1956, in Houston to Philip Mattern and Cecilia Pawlawski Vollmer.
Mr. Mattern was the co-owner of Mattern Tire. He worked as a fishing guide. He was a member of Evangelistic Temple.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Mattern is survived by his wife, Tonita Mattern of Palestine; daughters, Tiffany Mattern Cooksey and Crystal Mattern, both of Palestine; sons, Shaun Mattern and Nathan Mattern, both of Palestine; brothers, Allen Mattern, Donald Mattern and Phillip Mattern, all of Palestine; and one granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be Shaun Mattern, Anthony Mattern, Nathan Mattern, Allen Mattern, David L. Mattern, Phillip J. Mattern and Brian Zeilinski.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ryan Olsson, Stephen Cooksey and Donald Mattern Sr.
Condolence calls will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

James E. Killion

Services for James E. Killion, 80, of Dallas, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Jaynes Memorial Chapel in Duncanville with the Rev. Michael Spradlin officiating. Burial will follow at Little Bethel Cemetery.
Mr. Killion died Monday.
He was born Nov. 5, 1921, in Anderson County.
Mr. Killion had retired from Gifford-Hill with 32 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Val Killion; daughters, Linda Killion Landtroop of Duncanville and Joy Killion of DeSoto; brother, Coy Killion of Houston; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home at 811 S. Cockrell Hill Road in Duncanville.

Ada Lee Wedin

Services for Ada Lee Wedin, 90, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Southside Baptist Church with Dr. Stephen Holcombe. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wedin died Tuesday at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.
She was born Sept. 18, 1911 in Palestine to William and Dorothy Madewell Rodgers.
Mrs. Wedin was a lifelong resident of Palestine. She was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church. She was the first president of the Women’s Missionary Union at Southside Baptist Church.
She worked 20 years for the  Texas Theater and for Schulman Theater at the Palestine Plaza. She also worked for Pan American Airways.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Wedin was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Wedin, in 1951; brothers, J. Allen “Doolie” Rodgers and Henry Rodgers Sr.
She is survived by a daughter, Frances McMullen of Palestine; a brother, Allison Madewell of Palestine; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and before the service Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Southside Baptist Church, 1500 Crockett Road, Palestine,  Texas 75801.

Guy Horace Alford Jr.

Services for Guy Horace Alford Jr., 84, of Buffalo, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Buffalo Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Grissett officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery.
Mr. Alford was born Oct. 9, 1917 in Creek to Guy H. and Tina Mae Barbee Alford Sr.
Mr. Alford worked for Conoco for 35 years, retiring in 1982 as plant manager. He worked in Rio Grande Valley,  Oklahoma and Wyoming. He retired in Wyoming and then moved to Buffalo.
He was a World War II veteran who served in the Army Air Force. He was a Baptist. He was a Mason and a member of Hope Lodge No. 471, Rio Grande.
Mr. Alford was preceded in death by two sisters, Irma Douglass and Ella Mae Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Vera Nell Alford of Buffalo; sons, Jerry Alford of Buffalo and Guy J. Alford of Buffalo; daughter, Amye Alford of Tulsa; brothers, Donald Alford of San Diego and Glenn Alford of Crockett; a sister, Mamie Bean of Pasadena; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family present beginning at 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice, P.O. Box 6548 Huntsville,  Texas, 77342-5548 c/o Ethel Mae Deitschman Memorial Fund.

Harriet Malloy Boone

Harriet Malloy Boone, 87 of Yorba Linda,  Calif., died Aug. 24.
She was born Nov. 26, 1914, in Palestine.
Mrs. Boone graduated valedictorian of her high school class and earned a degree in English literature from Rice University in 1936. During her college summers she was a reporter for the Palestine Herald-Press.
A resident of Orange County, California and member of Trinity Episcopal Church since 1946, Mrs. Boone taught junior high and high school English and Latin in Orange Unified School District from 1965 to 1978. During this time she served as district English department chair.
She married Lawrence Douglas Boone. They were married 65 years.
She was preceded in death by her brother, David Malloy.
Mrs. Boone is survived by her four children, Lawrence Douglas Boone, Jr. of Sylmar,  Calif., Sharon B. Allen of Yorba Linda, Deborah B. Hagenmaier of Los Altos,  Calif., and Elizabeth Elchlepp of Orange,  Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mrs. Boone may be made to Santiago Canyon College Library, 8045 East Chapman, Orange,  Calif. or to Trinity Episcopal Church, 2400 Canal Street, Orange,  Calif.

Fred McKenzie
Funeral arrangements for Fred McKenzie, 88, of Palestine, are pending at Bailey & Foster.
Mr. McKenzie died Tuesday night at Greenbrier Nursing Home.

Seldon Slade Studdard
Mason Blake Studdard

Services for Seldon Slade Studdard, 4, and Mason Blake Studdard, 2, both of Palestine, were at 1 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster Chapel with the Revs. Jim Bradley and Willie Reagan officiating. Burial followed in Fields Chapel Cemetery.
The boys died Sunday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
Master Seldon Slade Studdard was born March 20, 1998 in Conroe and Master Mason Blake Studdard was born March 26, 2000 in Palestine to John Michael and Julie Bosley Studdard.
The boys are survived by their parents, John and Julie Studdard of Palestine; grandparents, Wayne and Cindy Bosley of Cleveland, Mike and Patricia Studdard of Palestine, and Lela Calloway of Palestine; great-grandparents, Homer and Shirley Henson of Conroe, Elmer and Billie Sadler of Troup, Marjorie Roper Studdard of Bullard, and J.O. and Sallie Kirkwood of Palestine; and one great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Seldon (Edith) Lasiter of Palestine.
Pallbearers were Clayton Lynch, Michael Bosley, Jason Bryne, J.W. Congleton, Billy Glenn and Jason Henderson.
Condolence calls will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
