Standley

Bertha Jane Standley, 81, of Anahuac, passed away on Monday afternoon at a Houston hospital.

Visitation will be held from 6pm-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Thursday at Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. Mr. Albert Billingsley will officiate. Interment will follow at Jackson cemetery in Double Bayou.

Bertha was born on August 15, 1922 in Double Bayou, to parents Asa Standley and Ida Trammel. She grew up in Double Bayou and attended school in Pine Island. She worked as a Nurses Aide, a food service worker for the school and cleaned houses and motels. In 1951 she moved to North Platte, Nebraska, where she lived until her return to Anahuac in 2000. She was a very caring person who loved to help people. She had a special love of caring for children and animals. She enjoyed watching Gunsmoke, Bonanza and other western movies. She was very close to her family and loved caring for her many nieces and nephews.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Effie Burgess, Inez Mayes and Carrie Griffin and her brothers Earl Standley, Asa Standley, George Standley and Bill Standley. She is survived by her sister Edna Martin of Flynn, TX. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lewis

Edna Merle Lewis, 79, of Batson, passed away on Monday morning at a Beaumont hospital.

Visitation will be held beginning at 5pm on Tuesday at Batson United Pentecostal Church in Batson. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Wednesday at Batson United Pentecostal Church in Batson. Bro. John Wiles will officiate. Interment will follow at Guedry cemetery in Batson under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Edna was born on August 31, in Batson, TX to parents Johnnie Caruthers and Rittie Richey. She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Hardin County. She was a member of the Batson United Pentecostal Church. She enjoyed singing and playing her guitar as well as visiting with friends and family.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Edna Joyce Lewis, her brothers John Caruthers, Charles Caruthers and Benny Caruthers and her sisters Alma Storey, and Oma Yarber. She is survived by her daughters Pamela Sanders of Batson and Nickole May of Batson, her sons, Raymond Cotton of Batson, Travis Cotton of Batson, Richard Lewis of Batson, George Lewis of Batson, Jerry Lewis of Batson and Carlton Lewis of Batson, sisters Edith Riley of Vidor, Lizzie Gillifillan of Batson, Janie Whitely of Batson, Doris Husband of Vidor and Thelma Reavis of Devers and her brothers Jim Caruthers of Saratoga and Gene Caruthers of Batson. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Umfrid

Buck Umfrid, 63, of Dayton, died Sunday, February 29, 2004 at home after an extended illness.

He was born September 25, 1940 in Warren, Texas to parents, Oran and Verna Umfrid. He had lived the past 7 years in Dayton, previously living 25 years in Crosby. Mr. Umfrid had 21 years of service at Fluor-Ameco. Service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with the Rev. Wayne Hardin officiating. Interment will follow at Allison cemetery in Warren, Texas.

Mr.Umfrid is survived by his wife, Jewel Fowler Umfrid of Dayton; sons: Raymond Pace of Lufkin, Jimmy Lee Pace of Lufkin, and Charles Roy Wallace of Dayton; daughters: Denise Crager of Lufkin, Renee’ Russell of Dayton, Shannon Strybos of Dayton and Sherry Hynum of Dayton; brothers: Charles Umfrid of Houston, Jimmy Carley Umfrid of Vidor and Billy Umfrid of Houston; sisters: Henry Gay Burrow of Winnie and Shirley Rice of Nederland; numerous grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Smith

Billy Foster Smith, Sr., 74, of Liberty, died February 27, 2004 at Triumph Hospital of East Houston after an extended illness.

He was born January 22, 1930 in Midland, Texas to parents, Frank and Altee Mae Gray Smith. A native of West Texas, Mr. Smith had lived 67 years in Liberty. He had served in the U.S. Army and was a retired truck driver. A graveside service will be 3:00 p.m.., Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at Hardin Chapel cemetery with Rev. James Hebert officiating. Interment will follow at Hardin Chapel cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

He is survived by sons: Billy Smith, Jr. and wife Margaret of Liberty and Odice Smith and wife Tanda of Dayton; Daughters: Linda Kay Fregia and husband Raymond of Ames, Elizabeth Dowdell and husband Raymond of Daisetta, Norene Plue and husband Ron of Des Moines, IA, Helen Campbell and husband Roy of Liberty, Missy Smith of Pasadena; Brothers: Lester Myrick of Vidor, Charles Myrick of Hankamer, and Curtis Myrick of Liberty; Sisters: Liz Joyce LeBlanc of Hardin; Juanita Nugent of Raywood; Dolly Olsen of Hankamer, Mary Parker of Shepherd, Betty Lou Guillory of Liberty; 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Michael Fregia, Otis Johnson, Terry Fregia, James Bass, Dewayne Pike, and Bishop Smith; Honorary Pallbearers are Joe Fregia and Cecil Smith. Visitation will be Tuesday morning until 1:30 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Smith

George ‘Wayne’ Smith, 57, of Kenefick, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 Pm, Monday, December 8, 2003, at the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Hardin officiating and burial following at Palms Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Sunday at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Wayne was born August 27, 1946 in Beaumont, to parents; Carl N. Smith, Sr. and Evalina Rankin Smith, a former resident of Houston, and has resided in the Kenefick area for the past 30 years. He was an Instrument Technician for Wyman-Gordon Industries in Houston with 36 years of service, graduate of the Galena Park High School class of 1964, veteran of the US Army with service during Vietnam, and Baptist by faith. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, piddling with tractors and equipment, and especially spending time with family and friends.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, grandson: Robert Smith, stepdaughter: Raylyn Turnbo, and brothers: Otis and Stelvin Smith.

He is survived by his wife of five years: Ella M. Smith of Kenefick, son: Jerry Smith and wife Ingrid of Kenefick, daughter: Tammy Smith and John Hirdes of Franklinton, LA, granddaughter: Catherine Anderson of Kenefick, stepsons: Robert Turnbo and wife Tina of Kenefick and Raymond Chandler of Cur N Shoot, sisters: Corleen Crisp of Channelview, First Sgt Suzanne LaMorie of US Army in Kuwait, Evelyn Burnitt of Kenefick, and Mary Ann Smith of Highlands, brothers: Carl Smith, Jr. of Vidor, Charles Smith of Kenefick, Clifton Smith of Huffman, and Douglas Smith of Kenefick, and numerous niece, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Franssen

Pet E. Norris Franssen, 93, of Old River, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Graveside services will be held at 10 Am, Saturday, December 6, 2003, at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Friday at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Pet was born December 15, 1909, in Romayor, to parents; William B. and Sarah E. Vickery Norris, was a former resident of Texas City, and has resided in the Old River area for the past 52 years. She was a homemaker, member of the Old River Baptist Church, and enjoyed church activities, vegetable gardening, and raising chickens.

Mrs. Franssen was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Clyde R. Franssen, and numerous brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sister: Ethel Lee Hargrove of Highlands, sisters-in-law: Ovvie Franssen of Old River and Mary Franssen of Seattle, WA., and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of usual floral remembrances the family requests that donations be made to the Old River Baptist Church Building Fund at RR 2 Box 114, Dayton, Texas 77535, in Pet’s name.

Mathews

Ashley Kae Mathews, Infant Daughter of Mark and Tonia (Dear) Mathews, of Dayton, died Monday, December 1, 2003 at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

She is also survived by: Sisters: Samantha and Heather Mathews of Dayton; Grandparents: David Mathews of Baytown, Linda Peters of Huntsville and Georgia and Lonnie Dear of Dayton; Great-Grandparents: Sam and Wanda Mathews of Redland, Oklahoma, Ann Zimmer of Idabel, Oklahoma, G. B. Hobbs of Wright City, Oklahoma, Francis Dear of Channelview and Howard Stokes of Nacogdoches; Great-Great-Grandmother: Etta Hobbs of Idabel, Oklahoma; Aunt: Holly Wright of Cherry Point, North Carolina and Uncle: Lonnie Dear of Dayton. Services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Coward

Lena Fay Coward, 77, of Liberty, Texas died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Magnolia Place Nursing Home in Liberty, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, December 5, 2003 at the First Baptist Church of Liberty. Visitation will be from 5:00PM to 9:00PM, Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Allison Funeral Service in Liberty, Texas.

Mrs. Coward was born May 25, 1926, in Saratoga, Texas to parents, Hugh B. Means and Athia Holland Means. She had been a lifelong resident of Saratoga before moving to Magnolia Place in 2003. Lena was a retired office administrator for the Hardin County Judges office. She enjoyed traveling, birdwatching, and spoiling her grandchildren.

Mrs. Coward is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James H. Coward Jr., one granddaughter, Lou Ann Coward, one grandson, Daniel Coward, and two brothers, E.B. Means, and Elmer Means. She is survived by two sons, Jimmy Coward and his wife Lou Ann, and Bob Coward and his wife Carel, one granddaughter, Amanda Michelle Coward, and one brother, Hugh Bevil Means and his wife Vicki, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Herrington

Ethel Mae Herrington, 89, of Liberty, died Monday, December 1, 2003 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Batson Prairie Baptist Church in Batson, Texas. Burial will follow in Guedry cemetery in Batson, Texas. Visitation will be Wednesday night, December 3, 2003, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Allison Funeral Service, Liberty, Texas.

Mrs. Herrington was a native of Batson and had lived there until 1999. She was a school teacher for 35 years and enjoyed quilting, working crossword puzzles, and shelling pecans. She was a sports fan who enjoyed watching the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, and ice skating.

Ethel Herrington was preceded in death by her mother, Desta Shaw, her husbands, R.W. Hand, and Esker Herrington, one daughter, Judy Lamberth, and a son, Robert Hand.

Mrs. Herrington is survived by, two daughters, Billie Cater, and Sue Galloway and her husband Jamie, nine grandchildren, Trey Phucas, Mandy Graeber, Sean Cater, La Juan Hodges, Charles Lamberth III, Robert Lamberth, Sheri Lamberth, Lee Galloway, and Matthew Galloway, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous other friends and relatives.

McIntosh

Lula Delcoure McIntosh, 101, of Nederland, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at the Spring Creek Manor in Beaumont.

Services will be held at a later date in Enid, OK. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Lula was born April 5, 1902 in Wright County, Missouri to parents; Elza and Irene Dorris Delcoure, a former resident of Enid, OK, and has resided in the Nederland area for the past seven years. She was a homemaker, member of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed knitting and baking pies.

Mrs. McIntosh was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Duffey McIntosh, son: Duane McIntosh, an infant son, brothers: Roy, Everett, Delbert, Charlie, and Jack Delcoure, and sisters: Maudine Jones and Lenora Boone. She is survived by her grandchildren: Burl McIntosh of Nederland, Tommy McIntosh of Devers, Cathy Hoard of W. Virginia, and Vicki Hebert of Grandview, nine great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law: Laverne McIntosh of OK, Ada Delcoure of OK, Nina Delcoure of OK, daughter-in-law: Doris McIntosh of Devers, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Larson

Pauline F. Massey Larson, 77, of Dayton, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Pauline was born April 28, 1926 in Del Rio, TN., to parents; Douglas and Hallie Perry Massey, a former resident of Cleveland, Ohio, and has resided in the Dayton area for the past 15 years. She was a supervisor at Standard Publishing in Cincinnati for 20 years and had been a restaurant manager, before retiring. She was a member of the Kenefick Southern Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

Mrs. Larson was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Carl Larson, brother: Troy, and sister: Mary. She is survived by her daughter: Brenda Richards and husband Carl of Dayton, grandsons: Alan Richards of Crosby and Arron Richards and wife Michelle of Dayton, great-granddaughters: Courtney and Karah Richards of Crosby, sisters: Mary M. Schultz and Evelyn Adams of Cleveland, OH, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
