Hammons

Louise A. Hammons, 76, of Liberty, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at the Liberty Healthcare Center in Liberty.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 Am, Saturday, November 8, 2003, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Liberty with Father Danny Parcon officiating and burial following at the Liberty Catholic cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 Pm to 9 Pm, Friday with rosary services to be held at 7 Pm, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Louise was born on February 16, 1927 in Galveston, to parents; Fred and Anita L. Koehler Moeller, Former resident of Houston and has resided in Liberty for the past 20 years. She was a homemaker and also was formerly employed by MD Anderson in Houston. She was member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and enjoyed her rose garden, cooking, caring for family and friends, and playing cards and forty two at the Center for Aging in Liberty.

Mrs. Hammons was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 30 years: Francis Hammons, and sister: Lucille Flores. She is survived by sons: Thomas Lee Hammons and wife Chandra of Maydale, TX and Steven D. Hammons of Liberty, daughters: Regina ‘Daughter’ Reed and husband Travis of Hardin and Marla Kay Cook and husband Steve of Arlington, brothers: Fred Moeller of Pasadena and Walter Moeller of Galveston, sister: Sister Vivian Moeller of Florissant, MO, grandchildren: Tracy Jackson of Hardin, Heather Bishop of Dayton Kristi Davie of Raywood, Travis Daniel Reed of College Station and Zane Cook of Arlington, great-grandchildren: Stephanie, Samantha, Allyson and Emily Jackson of Hardin, Kali, Kassidy, and Kimberly Davie of Raywood and Cole and Cade Bishop of Dayton, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Simon

Jacquelynne Golden Burth Simon, 52, of Ames, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at her residence.

She was a native and previous longtime resident of Conroe, had lived in Ames for the last 25 years and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah‚s Witness. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with Benny Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Wells cemetery in Liberty under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

She is survived by: Husband: Harold Simon of Ames; Mother: Adelade Burth of Conroe; Step-Son: Washington Lee Simon of Ft. Worth; Brother: Robert Burth, III of New Waverly; 2 Step-Grandchildren: Veronica Simon and Monique Simon and numerous other relatives. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2003 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Majors

Liberty civic leader and businessman, Lewie Travis Majors, age 70, died Saturday, November 1, 2003 after a sudden illness. A native of Jacksonville, Texas, Majors moved to Liberty with his parents, E. C. and Verna Hensley Majors, when he was three years old.

Always involved in civic affairs, Majors served as a city councilman for eight years from 1960 until 1968. In 1968 he was elected Mayor of the City of Liberty, an office he held until 1974. While serving as Mayor, he was instrumental in the formation of the Port of Liberty Commission and created the city’s slogan “First City on the Trinity.” He was also a director of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce, member and past president of Liberty Rotary Club and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church.

He owned and operated Lewie’s, Inc. for 43 years and was actively involved in the business until his untimely death. Lewie’s Inc. is a popular convenience and sporting goods store whose motto if “If Lewie’s doesn’t have it, you don’t need it.”

Majors is survived by his wife of 49 years, Juneid Newton Majors; daughter Sherri Majors Birdwell and husband John of Liberty; son Terry Travis Majors of Liberty and daughter Joanna Majors Hacker and husband Chris of Marshall. His grandchildren, Jeanne Marie Birdwell, Lew Birdwell, Jill Birdwell, Julie Birdwell, Sydney Anne Hacker and Summer Renee Hacker, also survive him.

Visitation with the family will be 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Sunday, November 2, 2003 at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis in Liberty, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, November 3 at First Baptist Church, 602 Main Street, Liberty. Reverend Jerry Johnson will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be John Birdwell, Lew Birdwell, Chris Hacker, Sonny Loftin, Fred Majors, Greg Majors, Kenny Majors and Paul Newton.

For those desiring, contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association.

Cowan

Etha Dell Cowan, 77, of Liberty, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at Liberty Health Care Center after an extended illness.

Mrs. Cowan was born June 29, 1926 in Centralia, Texas, to parents, Benjamin and Ella Payne, being the youngest of 13 children.

She graduated from Dayton High School and lived in Baytown from 1946 until 1994, moving to Liberty until the time of her death.

Mrs. Cowan was a member of the Baptist faith and attend Maranatha Church in Mont Belvieu during the later years of her life.

She was an avid bowler, being a member of a league in Baytown and known a trophy bowler.

Her family and extended family will fondly remember her as a fabulous cook and being “Grandmother”.

She retired from the Kroger Company in Baytown, during her time there she served as a union stewardess.

Services for Mrs. Cowan will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 17, 2003 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton, Texas. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Allen Cowan, nine brothers, one half brother, two sisters and grandson, Dwight Douglas.

She is survived by her son: Milton Cowan and wife Becky of Baytown; her daughters: Daphne McManus Douglas and Anita Susan Paddie both of Baytown; one sister: Lillian Parker of Segno, Texas; eight grandchildren: Jason Cowan, Kelly Cowan, Kristen Cowan, Kaci Cowan, Tommie-John Douglas, Jr., Denise Douglas Levin, Erica Zeiders, and Derek Paddie; two great grandchildren: Jordyn Serrano and Zack Daniel. Visitation will be from 5:30 until 9:00 p.m., Thursday at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Bajgier

Elizabeth Allene Bajgier, 11 year old Daughter of Gary and Gina Bajgier, of Houston, passed away Monday, October 13, 2003 at the Memorial City Hospital in Houston.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at St. John The Divine Episcopal Church in Houston locatedon Westheimer at River Oaks Drive.

She is also survived by her Brother:Boone Bajgier and Sisters: Esther Bajgier and Ruth Ann Bajgier all ofHouston and Grandparents: M. W. and Dorothy Ford of Dayton.

The family willreceive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Beard

Gene J. Beard, Sr., 59, of Dayton, died Sunday, October 12, 2003, at the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral services will be held at 2 Pm, Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel and burial following at Magnolia Park cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Tuesday, at he funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Gene was born February 1, 1944, in Houston, to parents; Marshall and Essie Beard, and has resided in the Dayton area throughout his life. He was a retired boilermaker from the Wyatt Field Service Company after 30 years of service, member of the National Transient Lodge, veteran of the US Army with service during the Vietnam War, Pentecostal by faith, and enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Mr. Beard was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Jack Beard. He is survived by his daughters: Dorothy Roebuck and husband Matt of Kountze and Evelyn Ford of Port Arthur, sons: Gene J. Beard, Jr. & wife Janet Richmond of Bryan and Jimmy Ford, Jr. and wife Kim of Kenefick, brother: Johnny Beard of Florida, sisters: Suddie Harrison and husband Tommy of Dayton and Pearline Rayburn and husband Jerry of Dayton, 15 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, mother of his children: Betty Martel of Votaw, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

DeBruhl

W.H. (Bill) DeBruhl, Jr., age 79, died in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 12, 2003. Mr. DeBruhl was born in Dayton, Texas on Dec. 29, 1923 to William H. and Beulah Jowers DeBruhl. He grew up in Raywood, Texas and was educated in the Hull-Daisetta ISD.

Mr. DeBruhl was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps. In addition to his Air Corps duties, he played the organ and piano for base chapel services and churches in towns and cities where he was stationed and also did musical entertainment. His higher education was received thru the Armed Forces Institute while in the Air Corps.

Mr. DeBruhl spent his entire adult business career in the oil field and industrial supply business in the Houston area. He was a lifetime member of Holland Lodge, Masonic Lodge #1, A.F. & A.M., Houston, Texas were he served as organist from 1961 to 2003 and was the first organist to be installed as an officer in a Texas Constituent Lodge of the Grand Lodge of Texas. He received the Golden Trowel in Holland Lodge #1 on May 17, 1995. He was installed as the Grand Organist of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Texas in Waco, Texas for the year 1996. He received an Endowed Membership in Holland Lodge #1, A.F.&A.M. purchased by members, on Jan. 18, 2000 in his honor. On Dec.5, 2000 in Waco, Texas he was also installed as Grand Organist, Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas for 2001. Also, on Dec.5, 2000 in Waco, Texas he was installed as Grand Organist, Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Texas for the year 2001.

He was also a member of the York Rite of Freemasonry as follows in Houston, Texas:

1. Washington Chapter # 2 R.A.M.
2. Houston Council # 1, R. and S.M.
3. Super Excellent Master, R.O.S.M.
4. Ruthven Commander # 2

He was a life member of the American Legion Post 77 in Houston, Texas and served as an officer in several offices including Commander, First Vice Commander and Chaplain. He was a director-trustee and president of the John R. Burkett-American Legion Post 77 Building Corp.Mr. DeBruhl was of the Baptist faith. He was a very active member of Big Brothers of Houston, Texas in the 1970’s. He also donated his time and talent doing musical and comedy entertainment programs for non-profit organizations for people of all ages. He served as publicity chairman for the Texas Annual Public Schools Week for the Houston area from 1965 thru 1968.

Visitation will be held at Pace Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton, Texas on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 1:00 p.m. till 9:30 p.m. Masonic graveside services will be held Wednesday, Oct.15, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Linney cemetery, Dayton, Texas. For those desiring, memorials may be made to the permanent endowment fund of the Masonic Grand Lodge Library and Museum of Texas, P.O. 446, Waco, Texas 76703 or Shriner’s Hospitals for Crippled Children, Houston, Texas or Shriner’s Burn Institute, Galveston, Texas.

Mr. DeBruhl is survived by two sisters, Betty Butcher of Dayton, Texas and Elizabeth Brown of Houston, Texas and a number of nieces, nephews and many friends.

Swofford

Lillis Edna Swofford, 95, of Hull, died early Friday morning at her residence.

Visitation will be held from 5pm-9 p.m. on Saturday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm on Sunday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. The Rev. Carlton Bailey will officiate. Interment will follow at Guedry cemetery in Batson.

Lillis was born on July 21, 1908, in Kansas to parents Henry Miller an Eunice May Rushon. She had lived in Hull for the last 10 years where she moved from Oklahoma. A homemaker, she had also worked as an activities director for nursing homes. She had been active in garden and bridge clubs in Oklahoma. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and watching game shows on TV. Most of all she loved to spend time with all of her grandkids.

Lillis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Sampson Johnson, second husband Marion Swofford brother, Henry Miller, and sisters Gussie Adams and Dorothy Sullivan. She is survived by her daughter Sue Ann Edmonson of Hull, grandchildren Dee Ann Ard and her husband Kimmie of Hull, Debbie LeNormond and her husband William of Hull, Latonya Stracner and her husband Jeff of Hull and Jerri Willis and her husband Jerri of DeRidder, LA, and her special nephew Bobbie Adams. She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren 2 nieces and 2 nephews.

Graves

F.M. “Blackie” Graves, 84, of Dayton, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at his home after an extended illness.

Mr. Graves was born September 29, 1919 to parents, William Frederick Graves and Rena Nottingham Graves.

He was a lifelong resident of Dayton, graduate of Dayton High School and member of the First Baptist Church.

A well known cattle rancher, rice farmer and business man, he served in many capacities throughout the years in local and state organizations.

He was a member of the board of Saddlerock Corp., along with Jim Sterling and Chester Holbrook, known for the production of the first rodeo to ever be broadcast on NBC television; was an incorporating director and president of Cordovan Publishing, which included the published of the Horseman Magazine, the Houston Business Journal and several other publications.

Mr. Graves served as director and president of the American Rice Growers Co-Operative Association – Dayton division and also director and president of Dayton Canal Company. He was an incorporating director and still served as director on the board of Texas Rice Inc. and American Rice Inc.; was long time director of Dayton State Bank and currently advisory director of Prosperity Bank; served on the Dayton Independent School Board of Trustees from 1958 to 1967. A lifetime member of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America in Fort Worth, Texas, he was owner of the great longhorn bull, “Classic”, an internationally known Texas longhorn that at one time had the longest horns of any in the association. He was a long time member of the Beaumont Production Credit Association, along with his business associate Mr. R.D. “Dode” Partlow, president of the association. Blackie Graves was known to always find the good in everyone and enjoyed being a member of the Pam’s Coffee Club.

Services for Mr. Graves will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2003 at First Baptist Church in Dayton, Texas with Mr. V. R. Hylton and Rev. Don McIntyre officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

He was preceded in death by son Bill Graves and daughter, Patti Dunaway. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lorene Graves of Dayton; daughters: Myrl Case of San Angelo, Suzanne Lindsey of Liberty, and Diane West of Dayton; sons: Lindon Wilson of Ohio and Charles Wilson of Beaumont; sisters: Lois Moore of Dayton and Adelene Stevens of Dayton. 19 Grandchildren and 16 Great-Grandchildren. He is also survived by special friends, Pete Douzat, A.J. Lockett, and Earnest Detiege. Pallbearers will be Joe Knight, Ron Norwood, Dick Partlow, Bill Sjolander, Ed Pickett, and Dr. Booster Stephenson. For those who desire, memorials may be made to The Dayton Historical Society, 607 South Main, Dayton, Texas 77535.
