Graves

Elizabeth Dee Graves, 53, of Dayton, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston after a lengthy illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Dayton, born to parents Ervin Calvin and Ila Elaine Graves. Ms. Graves was a 1967 graduate of Dayton High School. She was along time employee of Southwest Bell, later retiring from Lucent. She was a member of The Bethany Fellowship Church in Kingwood.

Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 20, 2003 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Richard Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her older brother: George Calvin Graves.

She is survived by her only daughter: Salayna Denise Bartel and husband Mark of Springfield, Illinois; four grandchildren: Tyler, Brooke, Brianna, and Taylor Bartel all of Springfield, Illinois; her younger brother: Randy Graves and wife Debbie of Dayton. Visitation will be Thursday, 5:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home.

Shipman

J. E. Shipman, 84, of Dayton, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his residence. "Pa Pa's gone fishin' "

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Am, Thursday, June 19, 2003, at the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with burial following at Ryan cemetery in Tarkington Prairie. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Wednesday at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

J.E. was born April 11, 1919 in Tarkington Prairie to parents; John E. and Ethel Copeland Shipman, and has resided in the Dayton area throughout his life. He was a graduate of the Dayton High School class of 1939, a retired operator and sales representative for Dailey Oil and Tool in Houston after 30 years of service, member of the Trinity Baptist Church, and the Dayton Masonic Lodge #825 AF & AM. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing computer games, working crossword puzzles, Wednesday night meetings, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Shipman was preceded in death by his parents, sons: Jimmy and Larry Shipman, granddaughters: Tanya Lynn and Brenda Carol Croft, sisters: Jewel Barton and Georgia Sprayberry, and brothers: Frank and Commodore Shipman. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years: Ruby Yarbrough Shipman of Dayton, sons: Johnny Shipman, Sr. of Dayton, daughters: Patricia Lynn Totzer and husband Karl of Anahuac, Sandra Lee Banning of Dayton, and Bobbie Sue Banik and husband Melvin, Sr. of Flynn, sister: Rosa Lee Falk of Dayton, 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and two on the way, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Tallant

Mary M. (Bocox) Tallant, 90, of Huffman, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the Sunbridge Nursing Home in Humble.

Funeral services will be held at 2 Pm, Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Huffman with burial following at Huffman cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Friday at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Mary was born June 20, 1912 in Arden, AR, to parents; John Bocox and Moffitt Bocox, a former resident of Ashdown, AR, and has resided in the Huffman area for the past 21 years. She was a graduate of the Ashdown High School class of 1930, former dietician of the Little River County Hospital and a retired dietician from the Ashdown ISD, in Ashdown, AR, member of the First Baptist Church of Huffman and the Gleamer’s Sunday School Class, and enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking, and flower gardening in previous years.

Mrs. Tallant was preceded in death by her parents: John Bocox and Moffitt Bocox Lewis, husband: Perry C. Tallant, daughter: Anna J. Stafford, son: Roger C. Tallant, and five brothers. She is survived by her daughter: Juanita Deen and husband N. L. of Huffman, son: Perry W. Tallant and wife Barbara of Huffman, seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Taylor

Agnes Taylor, 92, of Hull, died Friday, June 13, 2003 at Magnolia Place Nursing Home in Liberty.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Allison Funeral Service with Rev. Leta Storey officiating. Interment will follow at Guedry cemetery in Batson. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Taylor was born July 28, 1920 in Hardin, Texas to Jim & Cecelia Cobra Crouthers and had lived in Hull since 1938. She married Lesley Pat Taylor in 1928 in Hardin. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.

She is preceded in death by her husband Lesley Pat Taylor and her parents Jim &I Cecelia Crouthers.

She is survived by her daughters Mildred Bourgeois of Hull and Clara Nell Murphy of Raywood; 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren.

Slay

Lea Slay, 79, of Houston, formerly of Liberty, died Friday, June 13, 2003 at Allison Funeral service with Dr. Charles Greene officiating. Interment will follow at Cooke cemetery.

Mrs. Slay was a native of Greenwood, Texas and had lived in Liberty for 23 years before moving to Houston in 1992. She was retired accountant and a member of the First Methodist Church of Liberty, Magnolia Ridge Country Club and the Garden Club.

She is survived by her daughters Penni Cone &I Merry Payne both of Houston; sister Alyne Towery Reynolds and Midlands, TX; grandchildren W. R. McAfee IV, Joel Slay McAfee, Joseph Jeffrey Cone, Jr., James Iris Cone, Megan J. Payne, Alton Warren Payne III and Markham Alexander Payne; and one great granddaughter Jodi Allison McAfee.

Chesson

Roy Columbus Chesson, 92, of Batson, died Friday, June 13, 2003 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, June 15, 2003 at Allison Funeral Service with Rev. C. W. “Bill” Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Guedry cemetery in Batson. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mr. Chesson was a life long resident of the Batson area. He was a pipe fitter and welder for Porter Oil Company for many years. He was of the Baptist faith and a Mason. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing dominos.

He is preceded in death by his wife Louise Evangeline Evans Chesson and his parents.

He is survived by his son Donald Chesson & wife Mary of Hardin; daughter Kathleen Gillis of Gulfport, MS; grandchildren Danny Chesson, David Gillis, pat Meyer, Linda Gilmore, Vicki Chesson, and Trina Majors; 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Anglin

Paul Edward Anglin, 71, of Huffman, passed away Thursday in a Houston, TX hospital. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5pm-9 p.m. at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Graveside services will be held at 10am on Monday at Huffman cemetery in Huffman.

Paul was born on March 23, 1932 in Flint, Michigan. He was a veteran of the Army during the Korean War. He had been a resident of Huffman for the last 30 years where he worked in Sales for Sears. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking and was of the Baptist Faith.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife: Mary Helen Jones Anglin, brothers: Bob, Bill, Roy, Jr., Dick and Charles Anglin and sisters: Helen and Betty Anglin. He is survived by his sons: Britton Allen Wilson of Huffman and Charles Edward Anglin and wife Lisa of Huffman, daughter: Debra Ann Anglin of Huffman and sisters: Mary Phillups and husband Gerald of Michigan and Nancy Owens and husband Lee of Iowa. Paul is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Kilgore

Lillian F. Walker Kilgore, 89, of Crosby, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Funeral services will be held at 2 Pm, Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with Burial Following at Palms Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Saturday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Hoe in Dayton.

Lillian was born May 13, 1914 in Security to parents; Asa M. and Lena Hubler Walker, a former resident of Goose Creek and Houston, and has resided I the Crosby area for the past 55 years. She was a retired manager of food services for Crosby ISD after 25 years of service, member of the Whispering Meadows Baptist Church, former member of the First Baptist Church of Crosby and the Red Cross during World War II, past president of the PTA for HISD during the 40’s, and enjoyed reading, fishing, camping, travel, sewing, embroidery, and crocheting.

Mrs. Kilgore was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Robert Lee Kilgore in 1987, and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters: Nancy Stiles and husband Gerald, Estelle Anderson and husband Mark, and Robbie Harris and husband Joe all of Crosby, sons: Lincoln Kilgore and wife Linda, Leroy Kilgore and wife Sandra, and John Kilgore and wife Jan all of Crosby, sister-in-law: Agnes Kilgore of Baytown, brother-in-law: George Clark of Onalaska, 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

If friends prefer, donations made be made to the Whispering Meadows Baptist Church Youth Fund or the First Baptist Church of Crosby Library Fund in Lillian’s name in place of floral remembrances.

The family also wishes to express their gratitude to caregivers: Gerry day, Rosie Smikal, and Sharon Taylor, and doctors: Pamela Medellin and Judson Henderson for the care of Mrs. Kilgore.

Burton

James L. "Jim" Burton, 51, of Hardin, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at the Conroe Regional Medical Center in Conroe.

He was a native of Houston, lived in Hardin for the last 20 years, was a machinist and a chef andenjoyed his grandchildren, gardening and painting. A Memorial Service willbe held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2003 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with Rev. Anton Smikal officiating.

He is survived by his Wife: Sheryl Burton of Hardin; Mother: Margaret Burton of Houston; Daughter: Mary Burton of Honey Island; Sons: Jason Potts of Midway and James Potts of Houston and Three Grandchildren. The Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2003 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Nelson

Gene Nelson, 77, of Anahuac, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston.

Funeral services will be held at 10 Am, Friday, June 13, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Anahuac with burial following at Anahuac cemetery in Anahuac. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Thursday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac.

Gene was born November 26, 1925 in Graydon, to parents; Oscar F. and Maggie Lee Heathman Nelson and has resided in the Anahuac area throughout his lifetime. He was a graduate of the Anahuac High School class of 1943, obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical education from Texas A&M University in 1948, a retired rice farmer, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Anahuac Chamber of Commerce, past President of the American Rice Growers, former Anahuac ISD Board of Trustees member, member of the Chambers/Liberty Co. Navigation District, and Charter member of the Day Break Sunday School Class. Gene also enjoyed deer hunting, flower gardening, his yard work, and his community.

Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Nina Belle ‘Gaggie’ Lester Nelson, and brothers: Oscar Nelson, Jr., Robert Nelson, and Roy Nelson. He is survived by his daughter: Louise Nelson Herrington and husband Allen of Anahuac, sons: Don Nelson and wife Debbie of Ingram and Jim Nelson and wife Leslie of Anahuac, sister: Margie Thames and husband Louis of Anahuac, sister-in-law: LaVerne Nelson of The Woodlands, seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of usual floral remembrances the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church at 405 S. Magnolia; Anahuac, TX 77514, in Gene’s name.

Murr

Harry R. Murr, 74, of Houston, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at his residence in Dayton.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Canton, NC, in attendance of family and friends.

Harry was born May 26, 1929 in Canton, NC to parents; William O. and Rosa Bailes Murr. He was a retired construction worker and veteran of the US Navy with service during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Murr was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son: Richard Murr of Highlands, daughter: Judith Murr Jilek of Dayton, mother of his children: Willa Mae Murr of Houston, one grandchild, one great-grandchild, and numerous other relatives, and friends.
