Carter

Jack Lloyd Carter, 46, of Navarre Beach, Florida, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 in Pensacola, Florida.

A native of Liberty, Mr. Carter had lived in Florida for the past five years. He was a 1974 graduate of Liberty High School, an alumnus of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, and a member of the Heights Baptist Church in Liberty. While at Stephen F. Austin State University, he enjoyed playing rugby and made many friends. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is preceded in death by his Father: Clarence B. Carter.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, July 22, 2002 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with the Rev. Mark Payne officiating. Burial will be held at 4:30 PM at the Fairlawn cemetery in Liberty.

He is survived by his fiancee: Marni Jamison of Navarre Beach, FL, Mother: Phyllis E. Clement of Liberty; Brother: David C. Carter of Tyler; Sisters: Sherran Jackson and her husband Marvin of Liberty and Cindy L. Carter of Pensacola; Nephews: Chris Jackson and his wife Wendy and Daniel Carter; Nieces: Leigh Anne Carter and Lisa Carter; Great-nephew: Jacob Jackson; Great-Niece: Mackenzie Jackson and numerous Aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 9:30 PM, Sunday, July 21, 2002 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Nugent

Hanson 'Bubba' Nugent, Jr., of Hardin, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Mother Francis Hospital in Jacksonville.

Graveside services will be held at 11 Am, Monday, July 22, 2002, at the Guedry cemetery in Batson. Visitation will be held from 9 Am to 10 Am, Monday at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Bubba was born February 6, 1947 in Liberty, to parents; Hanson Nugent, Sr. and Kathrine Dowdell, and has resided in the Hardin area throughout his life. He was a Roustabout for Brown and Root, a member of the Hardin Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and drawing.

Mr. Nugent was preceded in death by his father: Hanson Nugent, Sr. and brother: Charles Lee Nugent. He is survived by his mother: Kathrine Crouthers of Hardin, sons: Henderson Nugent of California, Walter Ambrose of Silsbee, and Hanson Nugent, III of Silsbee, sisters: Margaret Nugent of Hull and Sandra Ribble of Liberty, four grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Fortune

Esther Lorraine (Frizzell) Fortune, age 76, of Dayton, Texas, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, Texas.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Herby Frizzell and the late Johnnie (Sheffield) Frizzell.

Mrs. Fortune is survived by her daughters, Juana Fortune of Highlands, and Brenda Brown and husband Douglas of Tarkington; Two Sisters, Janet Melancon of Louisiana and Nita Walker and husband Jimmy of Dayton; Three Brothers, Delton Frizzell and wife Ruth of California, Coy Frizzell of Hardin, and Gary Frizzell and wife Rita of Dayton. Also six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, 1304 N. Cleveland, Dayton, Texas are handling arrangements.

Funeral service will be at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 19, 2002, Rev. Lyndol Kinser officiating. Interment will be at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton, Texas.

Quinn

Ellis M. Quinn, Jr., 80, of Liberty, died Tuesday, July 16 after a brief illness.

He is survived by his four grandchildren, Amanda, Ryan, Katie, and Emily, one daughter-in-law, Bev; two nieces, Kittie and Linda; one sister-in-law, Scottie and three sons, Pat, Mike and Brian.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, July 19, 2002 at Allison Funeral Service with Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Fairlawn Memorial Park in Liberty, TX. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 9 PM Thursday, July 18, 2002 at Allison Funeral Service.

A native of Beeville, TX and the son of Mr. Ellis M. Quinn, Sr. and Zatella Faupel Quinn, he was born in 1922. After high school, Mr. Quinn attended Schriener Military Institute until his National Guard unit was activated in 1940. A combat veteran in WWII and the Korean War, Mr. Quinn completed his military career as Major. Serving with the 4th infantry Division on D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery in combat. During the Korean War, Mr. Quinn commanded a Korean Artillery Company supporting combat infantry.

Mr. Quinn graduated from the University of Texas in 1949, after marrying Mignette Moody in 1948. Together Ellis and Mignette raised three vibrant sons, pat, Mike and Brian. The Quinns celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. His beloved Mignette, preceding him in death by one and a half years.

Reaching the level of Vice President of Turnkey Operations for Goldrus Drilling, he led the high-risk turnkey division to great success. He was an established expert in his field often testifying as an exert witness for court cases.

A frequent fan of Liberty sporting events over the years to watch his sons, Mr. Quinn loved the outdoors. He also loved to entertain with his wife Mignette and watch his Longhorns with rabid enthusiasm.

His sons thank the community for their warmth and caring shown the family over the last 41 years. These expressions of affection are the benefits of living in a town like Liberty. Arrangements are under the direction of Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis, Liberty, TX.

Thibodeaux

Helen Marie Thibodeaux, 83, of Liberty, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, July 20, 2002 at Allison Funeral Service with Rev. Lamar Shane officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 PM until 9 PM on Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thibodeaux was a native of Prichard, Alabama and had lived in Spring, Texas before returning to Liberty. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents James Barney & Ella Victoria Miller Johnson and a brother J. B. Johnson, Sr. She is survived by her husband: Adam Thibodeaux of Liberty, daughter: Glenda Gibson & husband Robert of Lake Jackson; sons: James David Norris & wife Phyllis of Mountain Home, Texas; stepson: Robert Colman of Ivanhoe, MN; nephew: Elmer Ray Johnson & wife Jean of Friendswood; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Douzar

Daisy Douzar, 84, of Dayton, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 in Baytown at Baytown Nursing Facility.

A native of Alexandria, Louisiana she had been a life long resident of Dayton where she was a charter member of the First Assembly of God Church. She was the last living person who had signed the original charter in the late 1930’s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Douzar, daughter, Pearl Don, son, Sam Ross, and brother, Clarence Jones.

Services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 19, 2002 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Pierce officiating. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park cemetery.

Mrs. Douzar is survived by grandsons, Danny Ross and wife Deleesa of Baytown and Michael Ross of Baytown, granddaughter, Susan Griffin of Calhoun. Also great-grandchildren, Joey Griffin, Nicole Oyster and husband James, john Griffin, Dustin Ross, Nick Valdes, and Sara Valdes.

Pallbearers are Nick Valdes, Dustin Ross, John Griffin, and Joey Griffin. Visitation will be Thursday, July 18, 2002, from 6:00 PM until 9:30 PM at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton, Texas.

Meyer

Hugh McCall Meyer, 76, of Dayton, died Monday, July 15, 2002 at the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Dayton.

A native of Opelika, Alabama, Mr. Meyer had lived in Dayton for many years. Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 18, 2002 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow at the Houston National Veterans Administration cemetery in Houston.

He is survived by his Special Friends: Daniel and Frances LaBuff of Dayton and many other friends and neighbors. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 9:30 PM, Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Dugat

On July 14, 2002, Larry Allan Dugat Sr., a devoted husband, caring daddy, proud papa, and best friend, left our lives for his new life in heaven.

Born on October 17, 1938, in Barbers Hill, to parents; Leslie Dugat and Margaret Cole Dugat, and has resided in the Old River area throughout his life.

Larry lived every breath of his life to the fullest as a dedicated Christian family man and devoted husband for 43 years.

Proud of his Christian life, he served as a past Deacon and member of the Old River Singers for the Old River Baptist Church, and the past few years attended Mont Belvieu Assembly of God Church.

Larry was a graduate of Barbers Hill High School, Class of 1957; attended Lee College and the University of Houston; former Board member for the Barbers Hill I.S.D., a machinist for Exxon of Baytown for 17 years and retired from Enterprise of Mt. Belvieu after 15 years of service, member of the Dayton Masonic Lodge #825 AF & AM, Elections Volunteer and member of the Republican Party, veteran of the US Army with service during Vietnam, and enjoyed working cattle, fishing, gardening, and genealogy. In the midst of all that he accomplished in this life, his proudest accomplishment was the family that he raised.

Larry was preceded in death by his father: Leslie Dugat, and one son: Jimmy E. Dugat.

He is survived by his wife: Heidi Walsh Dugat of Old River, son: Larry Dugat and wife Tammie, daughters: Sissy Lowery and husband Steve, and Krystal Farmer and husband Coy all of Barbers Hill, mother: Margaret Dugat of Chireno, grandchildren: Jimmy and Anja Lowery, Brittany and Abbey Connally, Heidi and Larry Dugat, III, and Jaym Farmer, brothers: Wilber Dugat and wife Madine of Chireno, Verlin Dugat and wife Oletia of Goodrich, and Douglas Dugat and wife Liz of Alto, sister: Lynelle Sikora and husband Daniel of Livingston, sisters-in-law: Jeannine Follis and husband Wayne of Barbers Hill and Nancy Walsh of Barbers Hill, brother-in-law: Ronnie Walsh and wife Valerie of Barbers Hill, mother-in-law: Elfriede Walsh of Barbers Hill, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2 Pm, Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Mt. Belvieu Assembly of God Church with Rev. Thomas Moore officiating and burial following at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm -to 9 Pm, Tuesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Larry should be remembered as a remarkable person who devoted everything to anyone and anything he believed in. He will forever remain alive in the hearts and souls of those who loved him.

Wertz

Wayne William 'Billy' Wertz, Jr., 29, of New Caney, Texas, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 13, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Allison Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Cooke cemetery in Liberty, Texas.

Billy was born on January 23, 1973 in Ocala, Florida. He had lived in the New Caney area since 1998. He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and art.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Joey Wertz.

Billy is survived by Wife: Nora Wertz of New Caney; Son: Spencer Wertz of New Caney; Parents: Linda & Ron Leonard of Liberty and Wayne Wertz of Florida; Sisters: Chris Loftin & husband Carlton of Splendora & Jenny Wertz of Porter; Grandmother: Doris Rowe of Florida; Nieces: Kayla Mills of Splendora; Nephews: Tyler & Austin Wertz of Porter.

Serving as pallbearers are Chad Hewitt, Artie Enloe, Chris Tucker, Donnie Allard, Tommy Sullivan, Justin Key.

The family has requested contributions to be made to Putnam College Advantage Program, 2804 Jefferson Drive, Liberty, TX 77575 for Spencer L. Wertz Educational Fund.
