JEFFERSON, FEB. 6, 1999 -- The Rev. Willie Fred Lockett, the man described as "a father figure and role model" to Jefferson Independent School District students and employees, will be remembered during an 11 a.m. memorial service today at the Jefferson Middle School auditorium.
Lockett, 89, of Jefferson was a retired educator and minister and had been a member of the Jefferson ISD board of trustees since 1986.
Born June 18, 1908, in Timpson, he graduated from Prairie View A&M; College in 1941 and received a master's degree in 1954.
He was an agriculture instructor at Central High School, which served as the African-American high school before integration. He later became principal of Central High School until Jefferson ISD was integrated in 1970.
Before retiring in 1982, Lockett worked as assistant principal at Jefferson High School for 12 years.
Jefferson ISD Superintendent Dr. Carol Harrell said Lockett was a strong force in making sure the integration process went smoothly.
"He practiced what he preached. He was one of the most Christian men I have ever met," she said. "I never heard him say a negative thing."
Lockett would often take money out of his own pockets to fund trips, food or clothing for students who needed them, Harrell said.
"He worked very closely with students and the children loved him," she said. "When I visited him in the hospital in his last two weeks, he always had young people near him; he meant that much to them."
When Lockett was working on his master's degree from Prairie View, he wrote his thesis on World War II's effects on the economic status of Marion County residents.
Both the Jefferson ISD's Bulldog Stadium and Head Start Center are named in honor of Lockett.
Harrell said Lockett was a personal role model for her.
