Services for Gwendolyn "Gwen" Carr, 48, of Longview will be 1:30 Saturday at Red Oak Baptist Church with the Rev. E.B. Brown officiating. She passed away Monday at Good Shepherd Medical Center. Burial will be in Perry Clay cemetery, directed by Craig Funeral Home. Ms. Carr was a member of Swanson Street Baptist Church. She is survived by her mother, five brothers, three sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Julia Ann Dougan

GLADEWATER - Services for Julia Ann Dougan, 55, lifelong resident of Gladewater, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at Quitman & Center Church of Christ with Murphy Phillips and Dale Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Gladewater Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Croley Funeral Home of Gladewater. Mrs. Dougan died Thursday, April 30, at a Longview nursing home. Born April 26, 1943, in Gladewater, she was a member of the Quitman & Center Church of Christ. Mrs. Dougan is survived by her husband, Arlis Dougan of Gladewater; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kent Dougan and Kyle and Alicia Dougan, all of Gladewater; her brothers, Paul Mears of Conchas Dam, N.M., Moe Mears of Gladewater, Donald Mears of Mims, Glen Mears of Virginia Beach, Va., Gerald Mears of Maysville, Okla., Charlie Mears of Pritchett, Roger Mears of Longview and Johnny Mears of Talco; and three sisters, Sharon Ford of Longview, Janice Castleberry of Gladewater and Mary Gordon of Marlboro, Md. Mrs. DouganOs brothers will serve as pallbearers. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, May 1, at the funeral home.

Virginia Evelyn Gray

Graveside services for Virginia Evelyn Gray, 92, of Longview will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Stewart cemetery in Rusk County with the Rev. Bill Cunningham officiating, under the direction of Welch Funeral Home. Mrs. Gray died Wednesday, April 29, 1998. She was born Nov. 1, 1905, in Rusk County. Mrs. Gray was a homemaker and a Methodist. She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas A. Gray, and one daughter, Thelma Borel. Mrs. Gray is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, R.A. and Joyce Gray of Longview; one daughter and son-in-law, Elsie and Sam Temples of Longview; one sister, Ella Dee Honeycutt of Henderson; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be made to Stewart cemetery Association, 13300 FM 782 North, Henderson, TX 75652. The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. today, May 1, at Welch Funeral Home.

MOUNT PLEASANT - Services for Brian Allen Hampton, 24, of Mount Pleasant were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Saint Andrew United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Dunegan and the Rev. Steve Newton officiating. Burial was in Hughes Springs City cemetery in Hughes Springs. Arrangements were under the direction of Bates-Cooper-Robison Funeral Home. Mr. Hampton, a 1991 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, in Mount Pleasant. He was born July 28, 1973, in Mount Pleasant. He was employed by the Texas State Highway Department. Mr. Hampton is survived by his parents, Gary and Charlotte Hampton of Mount Pleasant; a sister, Christy Carruth of Mount Pleasant; a niece, Kristyn Carruth and two nephews, Dustin and Travis Carruth, all of Mount Pleasant; a special friend, Tammy Towlin of Winfield; his maternal grandmother, Letha Hall, and his paternal grandmother, Hadee Hampton, both of Hughes Springs; and other relatives, Barbara and Stewart Kander of Shreveport, La., Gerald and Yvonne Hampton of Mount Pleasant, Ronald and Linda Hampton of Lone Star, Carolyn Sue Turner of Fort Worth, Kenneth and Mona Hampton of Hughes Springs, Lynn and Bonnie Hampton of Hughes Springs, Kevin Hampton of Hughes Springs, Jackie and Liz Hall and Gerrie and Bill Polley of Hughes Springs, Dwain Hall of San Marcos, and a host of cousins. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 27, at the funeral home.

She was born April 7, 1913, at Three Forks, Texas, in Bell County, to Lon L. and Jenny Marks Pricer. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Mayfield is survived by her husband, James P. Mayfield; two sons, Jerry Mayfield of Carthage and Carroll W. Mayfield of Beaumont; three daughters, Eleanor J. Robertson of Malakoff, Rita A. Cisco and Gay Nell De Winne of Marshall; a sister, Dorothy Yarbrough of Temple; 10 grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, John R. Mayfield and James D. Mayfield, and one brother, J.D. Pricer. Pallbearers will be grandsons Randy Robertson, Stuart Mayfield, Michael Mayfield, Mark Mayfield, Shane Morgan and Chad Morgan. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, May 1, at the funeral home.

PITTSBURG - Services for William Richard Miller Sr., 82, of Pittsburg will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ricky Ricks and the Rev. Jeff Powers officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon cemetery. Mr. Miller, a retired machinist, Methodist and U.S. Navy veteran, died Wednesdayin Tyler. Edward Ferrell

Friends, colleagues mourn death of Edward Ferrell
MAY 13, 1999 -- Edward Ferrell, a man described as one of the more significant developers in Longview, died Tuesday. He was 77.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Rader Funeral Home in Longview. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
"During the 20 years I have lived here, I have known him to be a very fine gentleman, a very astute and conservative businessman," said Bob Dyer, vice chairman of Longview Bank & Trust.
"He was successful in his commercial developments because of his careful analysis of projects before he entered into them," Dyer said.
Ferrell's developments included Brookwood Village Shopping Center, Judson Plaza Office Building, Tall Pines Center, Northwest Hills, Hampshire Place, Brookwood Place and Sherwood Place.
Longview builder James Hunt said he served with Ferrell on the Longview Board of Realtors, and supported Ferrell in a race for city council and recommended his appointment to the city's Planning and Zoning Commission.
"He was an attorney who never practiced law to any extent. He was an intelligent, smart, wonderful individual," Hunt said.
"Ed was an astute individual, and he picked the right properties and did a tremendous job in developing them. He was a very conscientious individual as to the benefit to the city, as well as the profit motivation from the standpoint of a developer," Hunt said.
"He always was an understated individual, by choice. Edward did a lot of good things for this community that will never be known by the people, because he did not want it that way. He was quite private in a lot of ways, but he had a great heart," Hunt said.

Mozelle Mills

WINNSBORO - Services for Mozelle Mills, 80, of Winnsboro will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 1, at Beaty Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Suche and the Rev. Cheryl Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove cemetery in Wood County. Mrs. Mills died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at a Winnsboro hospital. She was born March 12, 1918, in Winnsboro to Ira R. and Ether Russom Messimer. On Oct. 31, 1938, she married Albin Mills. She was a member of Forest Grove United Methodist Church and was active in the Shady Grove cemetery Association. A homemaker, Mrs. Mills loved to quilt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albin Mills, who died Sept. 20, 1963; one sister, Willie Salmon; and one brother, Eddie Messimer. She is survived by five daughters, Sherry Finney of Winnsboro, Ruth Hammond of Mineola, Linda Roycroft of Longview, Marilyn Stokley of Winnsboro and Diane Weatherford of Duncanville; her sister Geneva Kennemer of Winnsboro; one brother, Kyle Messimer of Houston; her sister Maybelle Payne of Houston; her grandchildren, Jessica Finney, Susanne White, Rachel Finney, Laura Stokley, Jennifer Hammond, Sara Stokley, Stephenie Hammond, Mark Thompson, Brent Roycroft, Melissa Workman, Ryan Weatherford and Joe Hammond Jr.; and her great-grandchildren, Harlie Gill, Tyler Thompson, Whitney White, Zachary White, Ivey Workman and Shaine Workman. Pallbearers will be Brent Roycroft, Jerry White, Mark Thompson, Ryan Weatherford, Joe Workman and Joe Hammond Jr. Honorary pallbearers are J.D. Jones, Dr. Warren Murley, Jack Crone, Floyd Weems, Barney Tatten and Derwood Minick. Family visitation was 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Shady Grove cemetery.

Susan Shawn Taylor

Graveside services for Susan Shawn Taylor, 34, of Longview will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 1, at Ebeneezer cemetery near Pittsburg. Arrangements are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. The family will receive friends noon-1 p.m. today at the funeral home. Ms. Taylor died this week at her residence. She was born May 24, 1963, in Haskell. She is survived by her sons, Jason Morgan and Bobby Dowdle, both of Carthage, and Noah Yates of Newark, Texas; her mother, Patricia Ann Dugay of Waco; her father, Eugene Yates of Newark; two sisters, Cynthia Diane Schmidt of Arlington, Texas, and Tanna Jean Hightower of Amarillo; four brothers, Raymond Shane Yates of Amarillo and Randall Todd Yates, Johnny Orean Childers and James Calvin Childers, all of Waco; a number of nieces and nephews; and her stepfather, Joe Dugay.

Seward W. Thomas

Graveside services for Seward W. Thomas, 82, of Longview will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 1, at Providence cemetery in Ringgold, La. Rader Funeral Home of Longview is in charge of services. Mr. Thomas died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, in an Alexandria, La., hospital. A native of Ringgold, he was born June 17, 1915, and had lived in Longview for the past 25 years. He was the owner of a construction company and a hardware store. He was a member of the Christian Church and had served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Bertha R. Thomas of White Oak; two daughters, Sharon Edwards of Minden, La., and Nancy Ford of Longview; four grandchildren, Jody Edwards, Nancy Lou Collins, Karen Walker and Steven Toms; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Pietsch of Ringgold; one brother, Durward Thomas of Ringgold; five nephews; and two nieces.

Services are under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home. Mr. Woodall, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, died Wednesday at a Marshall hospital. He owned Red Woodall Service Station for more than 40 years.

Harold Dean Cain

CARTHAGE - Services for Harold Dean Cain, 64, of Carthage will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jimerson Funeral Home Chapel with Al Neal officiating. Burial will be in Oddfellows cemetery. Mr. Cain died Thursday in Carthage. Born March 26, 1934, in Matador, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired in 1990 from Permian Oil Co., where he was a district supervisor for 17 years.

Jewel Marie Dial

Services for Jewel Marie Dial, 87, of Redmond, Wash., formerly of Kilgore, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church of Kilgore with the Rev. Dr. William J. Ingersoll officiating. The burial will follow in the Kilgore cemetery. Mrs. Dial died at 10 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 1998, in Redmond, Wash. She was born July 2, 1910, in Damascus, Ark. Mrs. Dial was a band director and taught twirling in Oklahoma prior to her marriage. She and her husband, the late L. Harold Dial, moved to Kilgore in 1942. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Kilgore Music Club and the Kilgore Garden Club. For many years Mrs. Dial served as organist at the First Christian Church and as pianist for the Kilgore Lions Club. She also taught private piano lessons in Kilgore. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Ann Crisler of Dallas; two sons, Louis Harold "Hal" Dial Jr. of Great Eccleston, Lancashire, England, and Joseph F. "Joe" Dial of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren, Troy Chancellor Freeman and Preston Dial Freeman, both of Dallas, Adam Dial of Minneapolis, Minn., Jessica Dial of Seattle and Hannah and Sadie Dial of Great Eccleston; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the AlzheimerOs Association, 3613 S. Broadway, Suite 401, Tyler, TX 75701, or the Kilgore Garden Club.
