Tennie Huffman Smelley

Funeral services for Tennie Huffman Smelley, 105, of Longview will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W.A. Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in Winterfield cemetery. She died Monday evening at The Clairmont. Tennie Lea Huffman Smelley was born Sept. 12, 1892, to Alfred Marion and Margaret Chelnessa (Nettie) Leath Huffman. She was the oldest of 11 children. William Henry Smelley and Tennie Lea Huffman were married June 30, 1908, at First Baptist Church with Brother A.A. Duncan officiating. During the days of once-a-month "preaching" they would attend services at that church, Macedonia Baptist, Forest Hill Baptist or LaGrone Chapel Methodist. She was truly a Christian woman in a Baptist community. She loved to tell how she had been taken to Forest Hill at 2 weeks of age. She taught young people at Macedonia many years. Some of them often came to The Clairmont to visit with her, always telling her how they loved and appreciated her. It was never certain how many would be at her Sunday dinner table. The preacher, many cousins and friends were always welcome. On Sunday afternoons, there was singing. There are many people who remember these special times. Only the 'accounting department' in Heaven know how many she witnessed and ministered to. She will be greatly missed here on earth, but all rejoice that she is in Heaven, where there is no need for medication. She is survived by her son, A.J. Smelley Jr.; daughters, Dorothy Farris of Allen, Nannie Crain, Carrie Young and Ruby Lee Ray, all of Longview; 19 grandchildren; and many great, great-great and great-great-great-grandchildren.
