Rev. W. Warrin Fry
Former Longview pastor Warrin Fry dies at 79
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., JUNE 1 -- The Rev. W. Warrin Fry was not a tall man, but his friends recalled he showed stature of another kind during 17 years as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview.
Fry passed away Tuesday in the Colorado city to which he retired in 1983. He was 79.
"We've lost a friend," said John Murphy, the verger at Trinity and a worshipper there since 1948. "He loved this town, he loved this community. He touched a lot of lives."
After arriving from New Orleans in May 1956, Fry shepherded the flock at Trinity Episcopal until April 1973.
Under his leadership, the congregation organized Trinity Day School in 1957 as a kindergarten.
Representing the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, Trinity won approval of the Gregg County Commissioners Court in 1959 to lease Gregg County Hospital, which was renamed Good Shepherd Hospital.
"He was very interested in hospital service," Ann Rast recalled of the man who arrived in Longview while she was in high school. "He was a very caring man."
Rast said the reverend was known - and loved - for 10-minute sermons that made their point, and she described his ministerial style as more pastoral than preachy. Murphy said Fry enjoyed the freedom he was afforded to minister to his flock one-on-one.
"We were smaller then, and he could visit with everybody in everybody's home," Murphy said. "He saw the church grow. ... His faith was - you couldn't even question it. He brought a lot of people to Christ here."
Rast recalled Fry as a diminutive figure her father nicknamed Bre'r Rabbit.
"But his voice boomed when he walked down the aisle in the processional," she said. "He was just an absolutely fantastic guy."
From here, Fry and his wife, Jackie, went to Houston, where he served as chief of chaplains for St. Luke's and Texas Children's Hospital until his retirement 10 years later to Colorado Springs, Colo.
In addition to his ministry in Longview, Fry served other congregations in Texas and Louisiana. Since retiring, Fry volunteered as chaplain for Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.
Fry's wife survives him in that city, as does his son, William Warrin Jr. The reverend's daughter, Kathryn "Tryn" Wilson, lives in Plano.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Colorado Springs.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Warrin Fry Memorial Fund at Grace Episcopal Church, 601 N. Tejon St., Colorado Springs, Colo., 80903; or to Pike's Peak Hospice, 3630 Sinton Road, Colorado Springs, Colo., 80907.
