HENDRSON - Services for Merlyn Wade Brooks, 76, of Henderson will be held at 2 p.m. today at Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Kuykendall and the Rev. Bill Hitt officiating. Burial will be in Rusk County Memorial Gardens cemetery. Mrs. Brooks died Thursday at a Tyler hospice. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Louise Florey
KILGORE - Memorial services for longtime city registrar Louise Florey, 89, of Kilgore will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 11, 1998, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Mark McClelland officiating. After the services, the family will receive friends in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Mrs. Florey died at her home Thursday afternoon, May 7, 1998. She was born Oct. 20, 1908, in Mount Enterprise, Texas. In 1927, she married Frank Florey and moved to Kilgore in 1935. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Florey always hosted the weekly family "Board Meetings" held at her home every Saturday afternoon. In 1945, Mrs. Florey went to work for Gregg County in the welfare department, and in 1962 started work as the registrar of vital statistics for the city of Kilgore, holding both positions until she retired in the fall of 1996. Mrs. Florey was a seasoned traveler, visiting more than 100 countries. She was an avid reader and loved to work in her yard. She always had seasonal flowers in bloom. She also was active in the Civic Garden Club, Kilgore Improvement and Beautification Association and the Kilgore Business and Professional Women's Club, of which she was a member for 50 years before the club disbanded. She also was a member of the Civic Affairs Committee for the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce, and for 20 years she was on the American Cancer Society Board, Gregg South Unit. Mrs. Florey was awarded many honors for the community work she did. In 1978, she was named Kilgore's First Lady of the Year, sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, as well as Gregg County Senior Citizen of the Year. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Bettie Sue and Floyd A. White of Timpson, Nell and Wally Williams of Beaumont and Shirley and Burke Green of Henderson; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Hazel Fowler
Funeral services for Hazel Fowler, 75, of Longview will be held at 10 a.m. today, May 9, in the Chapel of the Rader Funeral Home in Longview with Dr. Michael Godfrey officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Park cemetery. Mrs. Fowler died Thursday afternoon, May 7, 1998, at a local nursing home. She was born in West Columbia, S.C., on April 17, 1923. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mobberly Baptist Church. She had worked as a licensed vocational nurse at the Gladewater Municipal Hospital. Mrs. Fowler was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Fowler, in 1996. She is survived by her children, Marion Fowler of Longview, Maxine Spencer of Gilmer and Jody Bennett of Kilgore; a brother, W.F. Collum Jr. of West Columbia, S.C.; her grandchildren, David Fowler, DeAnn Bodey, Paul Spencer, Jay Spencer, Mickey Spencer, Julie Bennett and Janna Bennett; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Norburn 'Nubbin' Fuller Sr.
OVERTON - Services for Norburn Weldon "Nubbin" Fuller Sr., 83, of Overton are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, May 11, at the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Atwell Hankins officiating. Interment will be in the Overton City cemetery. Mr. Fuller died Thursday, May 7, 1998, in a Kilgore hospital. He was born Jan. 20, 1915, in Overton to the late Jones and Clementyne Branch Fuller. He was a retired equipment operator for J.W. Green Contractors Inc. He was a lifetime resident of Overton, a graduate of Overton High School and a former member of the Overton Fire Department. He married the former Hansel Blackerby on June 8, 1938, in Overton. Mr. Fuller is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Hansel Fuller, of Overton; a son and daughter-in-law, N.W. "Nubbin" Jr. and Mollie Fuller of Longview; three grandchildren, Leza Fuller of Carrollton, Lacy Contreras of Fort Worth and Cpl. Lebin Fuller of the U.S. Marine Corps, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Bates, Albert Skeen, Arthur Owens, Don Dean, Robert Young and Glen Honzell Jr. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today, May 9, at the funeral home.

Hubert R. 'Russ' Herring
LUFKIN - Services for Hubert R. "Russ" Herring, 66, of Lake Palestine will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 9, in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with the Rev. Ken Goode officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mr. Herring was born June 23, 1931, in Phoenix City, Ala., the son of James Daniel Herring and Ethel Odessa Williams Herring. He died Thursday, May 7, 1998, in a Lufkin hospital. Mr. Herring had been the sales manager for Allis Chamblers Tractor Co., with 10 years of service. He had been a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. Mr. Herring coached in the Diboll baseball program during its first trip to the state playoffs, and he had coached in youth baseball and football programs. He was a Baptist and had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Formerly of Lufkin, Mr. Herring had resided at Lake Palestine for five years. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Lavern Herring of Lake Palestine; four sons, Bert Herring of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert Tolar of Pollok, Jeff Tolar of Ore City and Alvin Tolar of Lake Palestine; two daughters, Theresa Herring of Pollok and Debbie Blackmon of Porter; a brother, Ira Herring of Columbus, Ga.; a half-brother, Louis McDuffie of Columbus, Ga.; his sisters, Janice Herring of Columbus, Ga., and Doris Evans of Mobile, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers will be Tommy Rushing, Bryan Rushing, Loyd Cook, Hubert Cook, Sheril Cook and Glen Fulgham. Honorary pallbearers will be Davy Swan and David Scarborough.

Verna DeShazo Crews
Graveside services for Verna DeShazo Crews, 84, of Eddysville, Ky., will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, at Ringwood cemetery in New Boston with the Rev. George H. Richardson officiating with Welch Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Crews died Friday, May 8, 1998, in a Kuttawa nursing home. She was born Sept. 14, 1913, in Horatio, Ark. She was a longtime resident of Longview and a former resident of Kilgore. Mrs. Crews was a member of the Woodland Christian Church and a former owner of a New Boston grocery store. She was preceded in death by her husband, P.C. Crews. Mrs. Crews is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Margaret Crews of Longview; one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Les Pogue of Kuttawa, Ky.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Erma Kuers of Kilgore and Juanita Janes of Locksburg, Ark. The family will receive friends at Welch Funeral Home 2-4 p.m. today, May 10. The family requests that memorials be made to Woodland Christian Church, 511 W. Richardson, Longview, TX 75603.

John C. Dunsmore
Funeral services for John C. Dunsmore, 71, of Longview will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randall Bryant officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview cemetery. Mr. Dunsmore died Saturday morning at his residence after a lengthy illness. He had been a Longview resident since 1980, coming from Tulsa, Okla. He was born in Davenport, Okla., on Feb. 9, 1927, and was the manager for crude oil movement for Sun Pipeline Co. and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War. Mr. Dunsmore is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Dee Dunsmore of Longview; two brothers, Leroy Dunsmore of Bixby, Okla., and Leon Dunsmore of Tulsa; three grandchildren, Andrea, Michelle and J.D. Dunsmore, all of Longview; and his mother, Clara Dunsmore of Bixby.

GILMER - Funeral services for Lee Andrews Jr., 75, of Ore City will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Cedar Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Schexnayder and Larry Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in Coffeeville cemetery under the direction of Croley Funeral Home of Gilmer. Mr. Andrews died Sunday, May 10, 1998, in Longview. Mr. Andrews was born on Oct. 27, 1922, in Alto. He has been a resident of Upshur County for the majority of his life and was a member of Cedar Springs Baptist Church. He retired as a crane operator from Lone Star Steel after 31 years of service. He married Mildred Armstrong on Feb. 28, 1947 in Diana. Surviving Mr. Andrews are his wife, Mildred Andrews of Ore City; three daughters, Janice Ann Hancock of Kilgore and Mary Jane Clawson and Jena Lee Brown, both of Ore City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Andrews of Ore City, Alton G. Andrews of Gilmer and James C. Andrews of Cherokee; two sisters, Grace McMullen and Lorene Sowell, both of Tyler. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Debi Proctor of Gladewater; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Richard Causey of Gladewater, Debbie and Leon Word of Gladewater and Linda and John Haskins of Liberty City; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Lansdale of Gladewater.
