Edna Elizabeth Anderson Owens
Services for Edna Elizabeth Anderson Owens, 95, of Bronte, and formerly of Grapeland, were at 1 p.m. today at Sunset Christian Church in Grapeland with the Rev. Dennis Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Davis Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
Mrs. Owens died Tuesday at a Stanton nursing home.
She was born Dec. 24, 1906, in Grapeland to James Victor and Linnie Anderson.
Mrs. Owens married Granville Welborn Owens on Dec. 2, 1923.
Mrs. Owens lived in Bronte for 41 years. She was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church in San Angelo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, G.W. Owens, in 1970; brothers, Alton, Almond, Lem, Sonley, Bailey, Coy and Aubrey Anderson; children, Gerald Owens, Linnie Avonell “Terry” Brosh, J.V. Owens, and Linnie Virginia Frazee; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Owens is survived by daughter, Dale Hightower of Harker Heights; and son, Sam Owens of Midland; 15 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Rick Frazee, Bob Frazee, Christopher Stout, Terry Brosh, Mike Anderson, Richard Rusk, Tod McDaniel, and James Stalling.
The family requests memorials be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 120 Wall Street, 19th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10005-4001.
Elton Brimberry
Services for Elton Brimberry, 86, of Grapeland were at 10 a.m. today at Sunset Christian Church with the Rev. Vance Drum officiating. Burial followed in Davis Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
Mr. Brimberry died Wednesday at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston.
He was born May 30, 1917 in Houston County to Ben and Beulah Owens Brimberry.
Mr. Brimberry was a builder. He graduated from Grapeland High School, and Sam Houston State University. He was a member of the Home Builders Association, Rotary Club, past president of Sam Houston University Alumnus, past member of the Executive Board of Northwest Bank & Trust, and past member of Fox Hunter Association. He was a member of Sunset Christian Church, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Brimberry was preceded in death by his two wives, Norma Rich Brimberry and Sara Kegler Brimberry; and two brothers, Benny Frank Brimberry and Arnold Brimberry.
He is survived by daughter, Cherry Williams of Friendswood; stepdaughters, Sara Thurston of New Jersey, Sandra Scott of Huntsville, and Suzette Kegler of Madisonville; son, Richard Brimberry of Navasota; sisters, Melba Story of Grapeland, Wanda Winter of St. Louis, Mo., Neva Williams of Bellaire, and Jo Brimberry of Katy; brother, Oather Brimberry of Grapeland; and seven grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Walter Williams, Dale Williams, Bob Winter, King Chandler, Tommy Brawner and Donald Brawner.
Raymond Hardy
Services for Raymond Hardy, 67, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with the Revs. Roger Seago and Larry Trest officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Seamans Cemetery in Chester.
Mr. Hardy died Tuesday at the Hospice Home Place in Tyler.
He was born July 20, 1935, in Chester to L.V. Hardy and Helen Seamans Hardy.
Mr. Hardy was a member of Long Lake Baptist Church. He was self-employed as a heavy equipment operator.
He was preceded in death by his father; and sister, Mary Gutzke.
Mr. Hardy is survived by his wife, Emma Hardy of Palestine; mother, Helen Seamans Hardy of Palestine; daughter, Darlene Thornton of Kilgore; sons, Charles R. “Chuck” Hardy Jr. of Tennessee Colony and Mike Hardy of Crockett; and seven grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be the Rev. David Taylor, Harold Scales, Don Grant, Johnny Kluth, Wilburn Neal and Sonny Guess.
Honorary pallbearers will be Brent Hardy and Keith Thornton.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Virgil Calhoun
Services for Virgil Calhoun, 91, of Palestine, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Emanuel Funeral Home Chapel in Palestine with burial to follow in Lawrence Cemetery.
Mr. Calhoun died Friday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
He was born June 16, 1911 to John Henry and Eliza Kimbrough Calhoun.
Mr. Calhoun united with Mount Comfort AME Church at an early age. He retired from Knox Glass Plant after more than 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Leola Cooper Calhoon, in 1992; brothers, Johnny B. Calhoun and Robert Calhoun; and sisters, Maggie Ruth, Mary L. Waygner, and Robert Joe.
He is survived by a brother, Charlie Brown of Los Angeles; two stepchildren, Cleotha Barrett of Dallas and Bonnie L. Grey of Palestine.
Roy Beasley
Services for Roy Beasley, 64, of Crockett, were at noon today at Emanuel Funeral Home in the T.W. Berry Chapel. Burial followed in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Austonio with the Rev. Billy Chavers officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Emanuel Funeral Home, Crockett.
Mr. Beasley died Thursday at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett.
He was born Sept. 21, 1937, in Houston County to Willis and Callie Washington Beasley.
Mr. Beasley was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church of Crockett.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Beasley is survived by aunt, Josephine Reagan of Austonio; and a host of cousins.

William Thomas “Tommy” Grigsby
Services for William Thomas “Tommy” Grigsby, 84, of Elkhart, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Elkhart with Perry Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Myrtle Springs Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mr. Grigsby died Wednesday at Spring Season of Elkhart.
He was born Jan. 26, 1918, in Anderson County to A.B. and Ollie Grigsby.
Mr. Grigsby retired from Northern Propane as a truck driver after 30 years of service. He was a farmer and rancher and a member of Church of Christ, Elkhart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Rials Grigsby; daughter, Carolyn Bebee; sister, Laura Kate Grigsby; and brother, Buel Grigsby.
Mr. Grigsby is survived by his son, Eugene Grigsby of Elkhart; sister, Beatrice Smith of Elkhart; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be James Rials, Buel Grigsby, Mark Grigsby, Kelly Stevens, Shelby Matlock and Mike Broome.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Steadman, Harry Schmidt, Gene Broome and Sam Pigg.

Veda Ashley

Mrs. Ashley died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital in Lufkin.
She was born June 13, 1918, in Elkhart to John Franklin and Margaret Mayson Kisser.
Mrs. Ashley was employed with Foley’s in the accounts receivable department. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and Diboll Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Clay Ashley; five sisters; one brother; and one great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Ashley is survived by daughters, Jeanie Wagone of Diboll and Alana Gibson of Lufkin; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Roger Wagnone, Gene Davis, Larry Marvin Wagone, Kevin Dulaney, Dean Smith Jr. and Michael Rodgers.
Honorary pallbearer will be Ray Denson.

Lisa Gail James
Services for Lisa Gail James, 47, of Buffalo, were at 10 a.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home of Buffalo with David Harkins and Mitch Chapman officiating. Burial followed at Buffalo City Cemetery.
Mrs. James died Oct. 16 in Buffalo.
She was born June 8, 1955, in Odessa to Wilson Floyd Lay and Thelma Beatrice Morris.
Mrs. James was a Baptist and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughter, Katerina James.
Mrs. James is survived by her husband, Willie Maston James of Buffalo; daughters, Bridget Ellis of Dew, Brandy Chapman of Ennis, Paula Watson of Marquis and Stacy Conrad of Malakoff; brothers, Richard Raley of Groesbeck and Allen Lay of Germany; sisters, Tina Brotherton of Freestone and Marie Nichols of Germany; and four grandchildren.
Russell Hooper
Services for Russell Hooper, 84, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Gardner, Melvin Eades and Marshall Pryor officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Hooper died Monday at Palestine Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 14, 1918 in Lamont, Miss. to Mark Hooper and Mozena Lewis.
Mr. Hooper was raised in Timpson by his father and stepmother, Ozella Hooper. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University and took graduate courses at Prairie View and Texas A&M universities. He taught vocational agriculture in Minden and Arp. In 1951 he began a 30-year career as Anderson County Extension Agent.
Through his regular radio programs and weekly columns, “Weekend Gardening” in the Palestine Herald-Press, he provided practical information to agricultural producers.
He received the Modern Farmer degree, the Honorary Chapter Farmer degree, and a 30-year service award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1973 he was recognized as educator of the year by the Palestine Negro B&PW Clubs Inc.
Mr. Hooper was a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church where he sang in the choir.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Julius B. Hooper and Lee Dell Hooper; and a sister, Mozena Miller.
Mr. Hooper is survived by his wife of 48 years, Helen Starr Hooper; daughter, Jacqueline K. McQueen of Indianapolis, Ind.; son, Lt. Col. Russell L. Hooper of DeSoto; sister, Margie H. Gipson of Houston; and five grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Blouis Gipson, Cameron Hooper, Louis Hooper, Martin Hooper, Wesley Hooper, Julian McQueen and Julius McQueen.
Honorary pallbearers will be C.D. Hooper, James E. Hooper, Willie Hooper, Claiborne Lewis, James Miller, Dolphus Sample and the deacons and men’s choir of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Donald Gene Douget
Services for Donald Gene Douget, 62, of Centerville will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Centerville with the Rev. Larry Ashley officiating. A private interment will follow at a later date.
A rosary will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
Mr. Douget died Monday at his residence.
He was born Nov. 4, 1940, in Beaver, La. to Gilbert Paul and Beatrice Montou Douget.
Mr. Douget served in the U.S. Army for two years. After returning, he joined the Houston Fire Department. He and his wife moved to Cut and Shoot in 1968. He served on the city council and later was elected mayor, which he served for five years. He also was a member of the Cut and Shoot Volunteer Fire Department, Knights of Columbus and an organizational leader of the Cut and Shoot 4-H Club.
In 1986, his family moved to Centerville. In 1992, he retired from the Houston Fire Department at the rank of captain after 28 years of service. He then worked as a substitute teacher at Centerville ISD and was later elected Leon County Judge for two terms. While in Leon County, he worked on the 9-1-1 steering committee, from which he earned several awards. He also served on the child welfare board and previously represented the county on the Brazos Valley Council of Governments. He also served three years as Chamber of Commerce president, was a charter member of the Better Living Team, was a member of the Centerville Economic Development Corporation and the Leon County Corporation. He also was involved with the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, the Buffalo Lions Club and worked with the Heritage Society to restore the Leon County Courthouse.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Melissa Douget Pierce.
Mr. Douget is survived by his wife, Becky Douget of Centerville; son, Donald Gene Douget Jr. of Anderson; daughter, Michelle Clossin of Centerville; brothers, Daniel Wade Douget of Madisonville and Joe LaFleur of Houston; and five grandchildren.
