John H. Newsom

Services for John H. Newsom, 78, of Palestine will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood City Cemetery with Rodney Box officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Mr. Newsom died Monday at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

He was born Feb. 14, 1927 in Elkhart to Henry Davis Newsom and Zelma Duitch Newsom.

Mr. Newsom lived in Palestine and Oakwood most of his life and was a Baptist. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Missouri Pacific Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Davis Newsom; one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Newsom is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Newsom of Palestine; one daughter, Barbara Caudle and husband Bob of Palestine; one grandson, J.R. Caudle and future granddaughter-in-law, Sarah Harrinson; sister, Doris Burns and husband Ronnie of Lufkin; two half-sisters; special aunt, Irma Duitch; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be J.R. Caudle, Gary Bennett, Tim Ashburn, Jason McDonald, Dana Morgan and David Perry. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Newsom, Ronnie Burns, Keith Youngblood, Vernon Pounds and Johnny Vinson.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ollie Oates Schiller

Graveside services for Ollie Oates Schiller, 89, of Palestine, and formerly of Baytown and Houston, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn Garden of Memories in Houston. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Palestine.

Mrs. Schiller died Tuesday at Cartmell Home of Aged.

Mrs. Schiller was a retired accounting clerk for Southwestern Drug Company. She was a member of the Cedar Bayou Methodist Church in Baytown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Neville Schiller, in 2004.

Mrs. Schiller is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Rucker and husband James of Elkhart; grandchildren, Brian Rucker and wife Krispen of Elkhart, and Nathan Rucker of Dallas; and a great-granddaughter, Camryn Rucker of Elkhart.

Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster, Palestine.

Memorials may be made to the Sarah Center Cartmell Home for Aged, 2212 W. Reagan, Palestine,  Texas 75801.

Lamar Woods

Funeral arrangements for Lamar Woods, 93, of Palestine are pending at Bailey & Foster, Palestine.

Mr.  Woods died Wednesday at Greenbrier Nursing & Rehab Center.

Sandra “Cissy” Thompson

Funeral arrangements for Sandra “Cissy” Thompson, 50, of Athens, and formerly of Palestine, are pending at Bailey & Foster, Palestine.

Ms. Thompson died Tuesday at her residence.

Bishop Tyree Brown Jr.

Services for Bishop Tyree Brown Jr., 56, of Dallas, and formerly of Palestine, will be at 6 p.m. today at Dallas Community Fellowship Baptist Church.

Mr. Brown died Dec. 29.

William Roy Johnson

William Roy Johnson, born Oct. 4, 1922 in Burkburnett,  Texas and raised in Neches, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006 at Palestine Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Johnson, a 40-year resident of  Texas City, moved to Palestine in 1986 after working 36 years for Monsanto.

He graduated from  Texas Agriculture and Mechanical College in 1943 with a BS in Chemical Engineering, a member of the last class to graduate during World War II. He was commissioned and entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. He served at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and in Japan until the end of the war.

On. Jan. 21, 1945, Mr.  Johnson married Mary Gene Wilson of Palestine in Aberdeen, Md. Subsequently, the Johnsons moved to  Texas City where he headed up the process development group and was instrumental in the development and commercialization of Monsanto’s acetic acid process. While living in  Texas City, Mr.  Johnson was an active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), coached youth sports and sponsored FFA and Junior Achievement activities. Before retiring and into his retirement, Mr.  Johnson was an avid rancher. He enjoyed the music of the Big Band era.

Upon moving to Palestine, he became an active member of First Christian Church. He served as the church’s treasurer for many years and was an Elder Emeritus. He also served as member and treasurer of the Lone Pine Water Board.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Gene; three children, Patricia Clark and her husband Mike of Colleyville; Michael  Johnson and his wife Mary Anne of League City; and Kathy Casey and her husband Billy of Sugar Land; a brother and sister-in-law, R.E. and Anne  Johnson of Elkhart; and sister and brother-in-law Vera Belle and Roy Goodson of Baytown, and sister Betty Jo Graves of Bryan; and grandchildren Jennifer Clark, Kevin Clark, Chad Casey and his wife Whitney, Lance Casey and Shelby Johnson.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at First Christian Church of Palestine. Visitation will be today from 3 to 5 p.m. at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.

The family requests that gifts be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation in honor of Mr. Johnson’s wife or First Christian Church or an organization of your choice.

Ruby J. Conn

Services for Ruby J. Conn, 90, of Palestine will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Elkhart Church of Christ with Perry  Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Elkhart. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory.

Mrs. Conn died Saturday morning at Cartmell Home of Aged in Palestine.

She was born Oct. 16, 1915 in Montgomery County to Charles and Mary Bailey Minz. Mrs. Conn had lived in Palestine since 1961. She was a member of the Elkhart Church of Christ and had been a state finalist several times in the senior center state spelling-bee contest.

Mrs. Conn was preceded in death by her husband Roy and son Roger Conn.

She is survived by her son Dennis Conn of Palestine; daughter Virginia Gray of Durango,  Colo.; sister Leona Lewis of Terrell; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Steven and Roy Conn, Jason Chatham, Charles, Ben and Joe Hinds. Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy Hinds and James (Toodler) Rials.

The family will receive condolences from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
