Ernestine Gilliland

HARLINGEN — Nene, as family and friends knew her, claimed the final victory in her 18-year battle with cancer. Though heroic attempts at treatment ultimately failed, her courage, dignity, and sense of humor did not. She died in the arms of her family Friday afternoon, Aug. 11, 2000. Despite repeated surgeries, radiation, pain and disfigurement she never lapsed into self-pity, blame pessimism, or self-centered preoccupation with her illness. She appreciated the gift of each day to its fullest, seizing the opportunity to develop and pursue interests as far ranging as cooking, sewing, Tai-Chi, and exploring the internet. Her courage, determination, and generosity were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Born Oct. 31, 1926 in Frederick, Okla. she moved with her family to Harlingen,  Texas in 1928. She attended Stuart Place School where she graduated, and went on to attend Rebecca Sealy School of Nursing at The University of  Texas Medical Branch, Galveston,  Texas. There, in 1945, she married Robert M. Gilliland II, M.D. Despite a promising career in nursing she dedicated herself to her family and her community. She was active in the P.T.A., was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and served on the Board of the Baton Rouge Civic Opera.

She returned to Harlingen in 1966 where for the last 18 years of her life she worked first as a substitute teacher and later as a volunteer at Crockett Elementary School. She found such fulfillment in the people and activities of the school that even in the final days of her illness she searched for ways she might continue to be of service.

She was preceded in death by her mother Ruby Robertson, her father Ira Robertson, and Dr. Robert M. Gilliland, the father of her two sons. She is survived by her brother David Russell Robertson and wife Virginia of Longwood, Florida; their son Russell and daughter Cynthia and their families; her son Robert M. Gilliland III, M.D. and his wife Penny of Austin,  Texas; her son David Clinton Gilliland, wife Jena and their children Julia and Celeste of Houston.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Drs. Todd Shenkenberg and Noel Searle, the caring and compassionate Nursing Staff of Valley Baptist Medical Center 4 South Towers, and the faculty and staff of Crockett Elementary School.

The family will receive visitors at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Monday, Aug. 14, from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. A brief memorial service led by Mr. Julio Flores, Deacon, St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Harlingen,  Texas will immediately follow in the chapel of Buck Ashcraft.

Her life-long love of reading and dedication to learning is reflected in her request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The Library Fund of Crockett Elementary School 1406 W.  Jefferson, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
