Starthalia Smith McDaniel

BROWNSVILLE — Mrs. Starthalia Smith McDaniels was born February 12, 1910, in Homer,  Louisiana. She was reared and educated in Shreveport,  Louisiana. She was a longtime resident of San Benito,  Texas. She entered into eternal rest on August 2, 2000, at Valley Regional Medical Center, Brownsville,  Texas at the age of 90.

She was a member of Williams Road Baptist Church in San Benito. She was a well-known music teacher and social worker in Corpus Christ, TX and South  Texas area. She was a former Director of Activities at Twinbrooke South Nursing Center in San Benito, TX.

She is preceded in death by her son, Jack Thomas Smith; and her husband, Clarence B. Smith.

She is survived by two sons, Bob Zane Smith of Brownsville, TX and Jerry Smith of San Benito, TX; 10 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Funeral services visitation will be held today, August 4, 2000, at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home Chapel "A", 2906 S. Expressway 77-83 at 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2000, at 10:00 a.m. at Williams Road Baptist Church, San Benito with Pastor David Rifenburg officiating and will be assisted by Rev. Bob Smith and Rev. Jerry Smith.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito,  Texas.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Wheelock, Timothy Bowen, David Smith, Matthew Johnson, Joe Quintero, Chad Bender, Jack Bowen, Russell Wheelock and A. V. Perez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Felipe Juarez

HARLINGEN — Felipe Juarez, 98, who passed away August 2, 2000, in Harlingen,  Texas will be held Saturday August 5, 2000, at 10:00 a.m. with Father Fred Myers officiating services at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Rio Grande Memorial Park in La Feria, TX. A visitation will be held Friday, August 4, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.

Survivors of Mr. Juarez include his wife, Natalia R. Juarez of San Jose, California; sons, Ignacio (Oralia) Juarez of Harlingen, Jose (Angie) Juarez of Cleveland, Ohio, Benjamin Juarez of  Washington D.C., and Arturo (Mary) Juarez of New Braunfels,  Texas; daughter, Margarita Juarez of San Jose CA, and Juanita (Gilberto) J. Rocha of Salinas CA; brother, Vicente Juarez of Chicago ILL; sister, Aucencia J. Flores and Dolores J. Cantu both of Harlingen TX; 22 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be the grandchildren.

Jerald "Jed" Louks

HARLINGEN — Jerald "Jed" Louks, 78. Passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco,  Texas.

Jerald is survived by his wife; Peggy Louks of Harlingen, three sons; Sterling of Cicero, Indiana, Joe Daivd of McIntosh, Minesota, and Gary Wayne of La Feria,  Texas. Six grandchildren; Bonnie Adams, Dena Bjortmot, Craig, Joshua, Brent and David Louks, all from Indiana, and 10 great granchildren. He is survived by three brothers; Gene, Keith and Walter Louks from Indiana.

Jerald was born on August 31,1922, in Cicero, Indiana. He attended school and graduated from Cicero High School in 1940. He married Peggy Felton on Nov. 10,1950. Jerald served in the Air Force during World War II. He retired from American Standard in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a life time member of the American Legion Post #0341 in Cicero, Indiana.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17,2001 at Park Place Estates in the Ball Room. The Rev. Ed. Greig will officiate.

In lieu of following, the family requested memorials be sent to the Kidney Foundation.

Madelyn George Larson

LA FERIA, TEXAS — Madelyn George Larson, a lontime Valley resident of La Feria, passed away the 12th of Feb.,2001. at the Palmas Health Center in McAllen. Madelyn was preceded in death by her husband Paul W. Larson, her parents; John Oscar George and Ella Mae George all from La Feria,  Texas, and her sister; Midred G. Branch from Elsa,  Texas.

She is survived by two sons; Paul W. Larson Jr. from Corpus Christi, John S. Larson from Mission and three grandchildren; one great- grandchild; Madelyn was born Feb. 27,1911 in Sour Lake,  Texas.

She moved to La Feria with her parents in 1922. She grauated from La Feria schools in 1927 and then attended business school in San Antonio. Her professional career started at Sears, Roebuck and company in 1933. Madelyn later worked at the first National Bank of La Feria, a law firm in Harlingen, Coneway & Forrester, Harlingen Air Base, and then retired from the International Boundary and Water commission in 1965. She was very active in the Methodist Church in La Feria and later at Valley Baptist Hospital as a volunteer.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14,2001 in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 1-5 pm. Graveside services will be held Thursday, Feb. 15,2001 at 11:00 am in Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in La Feria.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Esequiel Pedraza, Jr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Esequiel Pedraza, Jr., 53, entered the gates of heaven on February 11, 2001. He was born on September 13, 1947. He was employed with the Harlingen Independent School District at Travis Elementary.

Mr. Pedraza is survived by his wonderful and loving wife, Estela Pedraza of Harlingen; three daughters, Elvira Solorzano of Harlingen, Norma Torres of Grand Perry,  Texas and Crystal Marie Pedraza of Harlingen; one son, Esequiel Pedraza III of Harlingen. He is also survived by his mother, Maria Solorzano of Harlingen; brothers, John Joe Pedraza of California, Roberto Pedraza of Harlingen, and Jesus Solorzano of Harlingen; four sisters, Rosa Gonzalez of Dallas, Josefina Lara, Stefanie Solorzano and Estela Zapata all of Harlingen. He loved and adored numerous nieces and nephews.

Prayer services were held last night at Trinity Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Templo Jerrusalem Pentecostes 317,  Jefferson with burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Roberto Pedraza, Jesse Solrzano, Samuel Zapata, Juan Pedraza, George Silva, Tomas Diaz, Alex Silva and Miguel Diaz.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Home.

Gilberto Galvan, Jr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Gilberto Galvan, Jr., 55, entered into rest on Monday at Valley Medical Center. Mr. Galvan was a lifelong resident of the Rio Grande Valley and was preceded in death by his parents Gilberto and Maria Galvan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Celia H. Galvan of Harlingen, son; Arnoldo( Sonia) Galvan of Santa Rosa, grandchildren; Dee Dee Marie Galvan and Arnoldo Galvan, Jr., sister; Bertha Moreno of Mercedes, Tomasa Garza of Weslaco, and his brother; Amador Galvan of Harlingen.

Visitation will be held today, Feb. 14,.2001, from 10am until 9 pm at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace.Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 15,2001, from 2pm until 3 pm at the First Baptist Church in Combes, Tx, with the funeral service to be held at 3pm with Rev. Bob Cole officiating.

Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, Tx.

Pallbeares will be Billy Grissom, Cecil Sorrel, E.J. Billings, Max Jentsh, Edward Evan, and Cliff Brown.

Charles Karseno

DALLAS, TX — Karseno, Johnnie Charles, 85, born March 11, 1915 in Dallas,  Texas to John and Mary DeAngels Karseno, went to be with the Lord on February 11, 2001 to join his wife, Helen Karseno, who preceded him death in 1985.

Johnnie received a Purple Heart serving in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church. He was a talented tile contractor and craftsman who was always ready to lend a helping hand. His ingenuity and resourcefulness was often called upon by family and friends.

He is survived by his son, Johnnie Karseno, Jr., and his wife Gaynell of Raymondville, TX; daughters, Vicki Lewis and her husband, Don of Dallas and JoAnn Gruben and her husband, John of Bonham, TX; grandchildren, Craig Karseno and his wife, Celia, Amanda Karseno, Keith Karseno, Clayton Karseno, Jeffrey Lewis, Matthew Lewis and Lisa Gruben.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, February 14, at the funeral home. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, February 15, 2001, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel, Deacon Larry Lucido officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., February 16, 2001 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 9933 Midway Road in Dallas. Rev. Jonathan Austin, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be made to St. Pual Hospice, 5701 Maple, Suite 200, Dallas,  Texas 75235 or The American Lung Association, 8150 Brookriver Drive, Suite S-102, Dallas,  Texas 75247 in memory of Johnnie Charles Karseno.

Sarah Bard

HARLINGEN, TX — Sarah Lee Bard, 80, passed away February 11, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

"Sally" Bard was born on February 28, 1920 and was preceded in death by her parents Sarah and James Saner.

She is survived by her husband, Oscar N. Bard whom she married on April 18, 1943; daughter, Robin Datry and son-in-law, Phil Datry and her two grandson, Ryan Datry and Evan Datry of Studio City,  Calif.; sons, Steven Bard and Mark Brad of Harlingen; brother, James A. Saner and his wife, Doris, of Red Oak,  Texas; nephew, Gregg Saner; nieces, Michelle Weisfeld, Lisa Parrish and Cindy Saner-McCann.

Sarah Lee Bard was born in Pharr,  Texas, and grew up on the Wells Ranch in the Western end of the Valley and later in the Rio Hondo area. She graduated from Rio Hondo High School, attended junior college in Brownsville, then went on to nursing school in McAllen and at  Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston and then graduated to become a registered nurse. She began her nursing career in 1943 and spent many of those years caring for patients at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen until her retirement in 1972.

Sarah Lee loved children, animals, gardening, sewing, fixing all kinds of meals and goodies in the kitchen, fishing and many kinds of music.

She will be missed more and more as the years pass. Sarah Lee loved her family very much and was cherished by her friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be held at Davis-Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood,  Texas, and burial will be at Mukewater Cemetery in Brown County.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the San Benito Funeral Home.

Armena Scheiner

HARLINGEN, TX — Armena "Sue" Scheiner, 82, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2001 in her residence. Sue was born on February 19, 1918 in Sayer,  Oklahoma to Walter and Margie Adams. Sue was a member of the First Christian Church in Harlingen, and a member of the Does Drove #90. Sue married Fran J. Scheiner on October 17, 1941 in Brownsville,  Texas. Sue was a retired bookkeeper, working for many years with the Harlingen Elks Lodge.

Sue survived by her husband, Fran J. Scheiner of Harlingen; daughter, Karren Scheiner of Harlingen; son, Randy Scheiner of Rio Hondo; grandsons, Derek Hill and Cass Hill both of Ft. Worth; granddaughter, Shara Scheiner of Arkansas; and great granddaughter, Kyler Hill of Ft. Worth; sisters, Juanita Barton and Frances Brooke both of Brownsville; brother, Thearl Adams of Brownsville.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2001 in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 14, 2001 in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Coppins officiating, also the Harlingen Does Drove #90 will be conducting a final ceremony. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice program.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Alejandro "Bigfoot" Garza

RIO HONDO — Alejandro "Bigfoot" Garza, 44, entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Freemont, Ohio. Bigfoot was a lifelong resident of Rio Hondo and was preceded in death by his father, Esteban Garza and his brother Abraham Garza.

He is survived by his loving family, mother, Sarah Garza of Mercedes, brothers, Esteban Garza Jr. of Brownsville, Alonzo Garza of Rio Hondo, Pedro Garza of Rio Hondo, Andres Garza of Tucson, Ariz., Ismael Garza of San Benito, Daniel Garza of Corpus Christi, Ruben Garza of Tucson, Ariz., Alfredo Garza of Rio Hondo; sisters, Connie Aregon of Albuquerque, N.M., Yolanda Bengel of Tucson, Ariz., Dalilah Garza of El Paso, Ernestina Quiroz of Rio Hondo, Carolina Garcia of Brownsville, Sandra Heredia of El Paso and by numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Visitations were held Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. funeral service at Abundant Life Assembly of God Church with Pastor Joseph Plata officiating. Interment will follow at the Rio Hondo Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Abraham Garza, Joe Flores, Henry Garza III, Jerry Garza, Freddy Garza, Nathan Garza, Manuel Garza and Saul Sanchez. Bigfoot will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Alejandro "Bigfoot" Garza

RIO HONDO — Alejandro "Bigfoot" Garza, 44, entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Freemont, Ohio. Bigfoot was a lifelong resident of Rio Hondo and was preceded in death by his father, Esteban Garza and his brother Abraham Garza.

Hortencia Rios Ruiz

MERCEDES — Hortencia Rios Ruiz, 94, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 at Canterbury Villa in Kingsville,  Texas. She was a former resident of Mercedes.

She is survived by one brother, Abel Rios of Kingsville; two sisters, Lydia Palacios of Houston and Isabel Rios of Mexico.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Garcia and Trevino Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Highland Memorial Park of Weslaco.
