William H. Tithof Sr.

HARLINGEN — Mr. Tithof was born on March 29, 1923, in Manistee, MI. His family moved to Bay City, Mich. in 1927. He lived in this area until he moved to Harlingen, in 1984. He graduated from St. Joseph High School and entered the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Bill graduated from Central Michigan University in 1950 and taught school in the Bay City Public School system for 29 years.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joseph and Monica (Studer) Tithof; his first wife, Germaine (Wojciechowski); one brother, Gerald; and two sisters, Marian (Tithof) and Dorothy (Landskroener).

He leaves his wife, Ruth (Ryder), whom he married in 1977. He also leaves behind a daughter, Janice and her husband James Jaskiewiez of Bay City, MI; a daughter, Nara, and her husband Larry Ramseyer and their children, Keith, Eric, and Paul, also of Bay City, MI; a son, Dr. William Tithof Jr., and his wife Cindy and their sons, Travis and Aaron of Auburn, MI, one step son, Marc Ryder, his wife, Maryanne and their children, Donald, Olivia, and Lauren of Woodhaven, MI.

He is also survived by three sisters, Ursula Healy of Bay City, MI, Eulalia Ellis of Arcadia, FL, and Mary Brady of Unionville, MI; one brother, Joseph Tithof and his wife Dorothy of Essexville, MI; a sister-in-law, Margaret Tithof of Bay City, MI, and a special nephew, Gary Ellis of Clare, MI; several nieces and nephews; and his many close friends he walked with at the Valley Vista Mall.

He was a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889 in Harlingen, and the American Legion Post 439 of La Feria with Father Alfredo Garcia, SSCC, officiating.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Rev. J. Rufus Stewart

BROWNSVILLE — The Rev. J. Rufus Stewart, Rector Emeritus born May 14, 1917 in Milton, Fla., died on Feb. 9, 2001, at Valley Regional Medical Center.

Rufus Stewart was the Rector of the church of the Advent Episcopal in Brownsville for 23 years. He is also served as chaplain for the Episcopal Day School during that time. He served for six years as Chairman of the Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department. Diocesan positions held by him include chairman of Camps and conferences Committee, Chairman of the Diocesan Standing Committee, Dean of both Southern and Valley Convocations, dean of Diocesan examining chaplains, and twice an elected member of the Diocesan Executive Board. He had hosted four Diocesan Councils, the largest number ever hosted by a single clergyman in a single Parish.

Rev. Stewart, a native of Florida, was a graduate of the University of Florida and of St. Luke’s school of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a line officers during World War II and as a Chaplain during the Korean War. Prior to becoming rector of the church of the advent, he served as Rector of churches in Mandarin and Orange Park, Florida and Alice,  Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Stewart; his two children and their spouses, Margaret and Wesley Teague of Alexandria, Virginia and John M. and Cindy Stewart of Kernersville, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Carey Ellen and Jacqueline M. Stewart and Sam Teague; his sister Carey Jo Bair of Seneca, S.C. and brother Bill Stewart of Atlanta, GA., and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Winans, Bill Reed, Bobby Duffey, Frank Parker, Bill McManus, Tommy Carruth, Ann Ray, Babs Clendenin, Ray Simmons, Fernando DeLeon, J.C. George, Herb Miller, Roger Hoffman, David Duffey, Chet Winans, Gaylord Rhodes, Jim Hester, Sam Pate, Chris Partridge, David Duncan and Wilf Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at the church of the Advent, Episcopal, 104 W. Elizabeth Street, with the Rt. Rev. Robert Hibbs and the Rev. Art Bevins officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to the Episcopal Day School Scholarship Fund’ the Episcopal Day School Endowment Fund; St. Alban’s Camp Capers Scholarship Fund, Harlingen; St. Andrew’s Camp Capers Scholarship Fund, Port Isabel; Church of the Advent Altar Guild, Brownsville or a charity of choice.

Agustin Cervantes Sr.

LYFORD — Agustin Cervantes Sr., 75, of Sebastian passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001. A loving father, husband, and grandfather. He was cherished and loved by all. Dedicating his life for over 35 years as a farmer for area businessmen in Willacy County.

He was a good and loyal man. His greatest joys were fishing, gardening, traveling, and watching the Dallas Cowboys. His laughter and wisdom will be missed by family and friends. He got a piece of America that no one could take away. He was born a Mexican, but died an American.

He is survived by his wife, Eulogia Cervantes; sons and daughters, Selso Cervantes of Sebastian, Tx., Reyna Fitch of Bridgeport, Mi., Juan Cervantes of Houston, Tx., Yolanda Cadena of McAllen, Tx., Elva Hernandez of Houston, Tx., Agustin Cervantes Jr. of Mission, Tx., and Ricardo Cervantes of Mission,Tx. He was preceded in death by parents; Celso Cervantes and Tecla Tapia and brother Ramon Cervantes. Also survived brothers and sister; Daniel Cervantes of Monterrey, N.L., Fortino Cervantes of Fresno, Ca., Bernardino Cervantes of San Cristobal, Huanimaro; GTO., Dolores Cervantes and Elena Cervantes both of La Piedad, Huanimaro; GTO., Catelina Cervantes of San Cristobal Huanimaro, GTO. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and one great - grandchild.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb.10, 2001, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a memorial service at 12 p.m. at Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Chapel.

Robert Vuittonet

HARLINGEN — Robert Vuittonet, age 37 died in League City,  Texas due to a traffic accident. He was a native of Harlingen but had lived in League City most of his life.

Survivors include his wife: Judy Vuittonet of League City, TX, two daughters: Lisa and Gabriella Vuittonet of League City, TX. His father: Francisco Vuittonet and mother: Gloria Rivera both of League City.

Brothers: Rolando, Francisco Jr., and Ernesto Vuittonet all of League City. Sisters: Aurora Gutierrez, Manuel Salazar, Valentina Cordova, Gloria Vidal, Rachel Witt and Modesta Hernandez all of League City. Paternal Grandmother: Leonor Alvarez of Combes, Maternal Grandmother: Manuela Rivera of Harlingen, 23 nephews and ten nieces.

Preceded in death by his brother Ruben Vuittonet and two nephews Rudy Vuittonet and Ramiro Salazar Jr.

Funeral services today at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Home 1217 S. F. Street Harlingen, TX. Burial will follow at La Capilla Cemetery.

Howard Elmo Rains

PORT ISABEL — Howard Elmo Rains, 80, Port Isabel, TX, passed away Wednesday,February 7,2001, at Valley Baptist Hospital, Harlingen, TX. Private memorial services will be held at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City, MO.

Mr. Rains was born June 6,1920, in St. Joseph, MO. He was a Navy veteran, and had worked for Southwestern Bell. He was a member of Holmeswood Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, L. Maxine Rains, of the home, two sons, Roger H. Rains, Kansas City, MO, and Dennis K. Rains, Leawood, KS, daughter, Sheryl Ruark, Kansas City, MO, two sisters , Zella J. Wright, Kansas City, MO, and Thelma N. Vetter, Hot Springs, AR, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Jesse H. Garcia, Sr.

HARLINGEN — Jesse H. Garcia,Sr. age 77 died in Valley Baptist Medical Center, on Thursday, February 8,2001. He was born in Harlingen, lived all his life in the valley. He was a self employed, restaurant owner. He attended Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Harlingen.

Survivors include his wife; Elia Garcia of Harlingen, one son: Jesse H. Garcia, Jr. of Austin, daughter: Mary Louise Zapata of Harlingen, grandchildren:Christine, Crystal and Javier Zapata all of Halingen, sister: Josefina Zuniga of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Visitation will be Friday February 9,2001 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. with Deacon Ignacio Gonzalez Officiating.

military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 205 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2410.

Services will be held at Queen of Peace Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday Feb. 10,2001. Officiating will be Father Mathias Shanley SS.CC. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Luis L. Garcia, Ignacio Gonzalez, Juan Gonzalez, Danny Garcia, Luis Javier Garcia, Salvador Garcia.

Eustacio Alonzo Galvan

AUSTIN — Eustacio Alonzo (E.A.) Galvan, 69 of Austin died Feruary 6, 2001. He was born to Francisco and Teresa Galvan on the March 29, 1931 in San Benito, TX.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Celia; daughter, Celina of Austin; sons, Eduardo (Melissa) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Edmundo, of Austin, Emilio (Kevin), of New York City, Eugenio, of Austin. He is also survived by three brothers; Faustino and Cipriano, of Harlingen; and Pedro of San Benito; five sisters, Juanita Guerra of San Benito, Victoria Cervantes, of Wheeling, Illinios, Trinidad Gil, Apolonia Rodriguez, and Benita Guerra, of San Benito, as well as countless other family members.

After graduating from San Benito High School. Mr. Galvan attended  Texas Southmost College. He then proudly served his country in the Korean Confict. Upon his return, he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of  Texas and then received a law degree from the University of  Texas School of Law.

He embarked upon a distinguished legal career including positions as an Assistant County Attorney for Travis County, Assistant District Attorney for Travis County under Robert Smith and Hearings Examiner at the  Texas Railroad Commission. After a brief retirement he assumed a position as a municipal judge for the City of Kyle, TX.

Visitation will be Friday, February 9th from 8 :00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Harrell Funreal Home, 4435 Frontier Trail (at South Lamar and Ben  White Blvd). Rosary on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Queen Lady of Peace Chapel, St. Edward’s University with the Reverend Harold G. Zink C.S.C. officiating. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3650 South IH 35.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the Eustacio A. Galvan Memorial Scholarship Fund by sending donations to  Texas State Bank, P.O. Box 8008, Weslaco,TX 78956, Attention: Julie Ann Guerra- Ramirez. The fund will provide scholarships to graduates of San Benito High School attending the University of  Texas.

The family warmly thanks the staff at South Austin Medical Center for the comforting care that they provided Mr. Galvan and his family.

John R. Wheeler

SAN BENITO, TX — Memorial services for John R. Wheeler, 70, a native of Dacatur, IL, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in San Benito, TX. John was born January 12, 1931, son of William E. and Lola Eckel Wheeler. He married Margie Siburt on July 1, 1955.

John leaves a son, William E. Wheeler of Beeville, TX., and a daughter Cinda Wheeler of Hickory Hills, IL. As well as numerous well-loved sister and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Special love between many  Texas card playing, bingo friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Wayne Wheeler and sisters, Katherine (Ralph) Clipton and Myrtle (Louis) Jockisch.

John served four years in the United States Air Force. He retired from A.E. Staley Mfg. Co. in Decatur, IL and moved to  Texas in 1990.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donation be given to the Youth Program of the First United Methodist Church, 400 North Sam Houston, San Benito, TX 78586.

Maria Espindolo Perez

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria E. Espindolo Perez a member of the Valley Pioneer Family entered into rest on February 5, 2001 in Harlingen at the age of 94. Maria was born to Cipriano Espindola and Cruz Loya on June 2, 1906 in Brownsville,  Texas. She was married to Antonio Perez in 1924 and together raised 12 children.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Antonio Perez and one grandson, Johnny P. Hernandez.

She is survived by her 12 children, Alfonso E. Perez, Tony E. Perez of Harlingen, Ofelio E. Perez of Abereen, Idaho, Adan E. Perez of Richland, W. Virginia, Gilbert E. Perez of Houston,  Texas, Jesse E. Perez of San Antonio, Sophia E. Perez, Mary Lou P. Landeros, Bertha P. Torres of Harlingen, Eva E. Perez, Celia P. Hernandez of Vallego, CA, and Petra P. Gonzalez of Gonzalez,  Texas. She is also survived by 5 generations three times of grandchildren, and one brother, Jesus Loya Espindola.

Visitation was held yesterday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Alfonso E. Perez, Tony E. Perez, Ofelio E. Perez, Gilbert E. Perez, Jesse E. Perez, and Oscar Landeros. Honorary pallbearer will be Sylvestre Torres.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Victor Hasselbach

LINDSEY, OH — Victor "Vic" Hasselbach, age 80 years, of Lindsey, Ohio passed away at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco late Monday night. Mr. Hasselbach wintered in  Texas.

He was born in Fremont, Ohio on February 27, 1920 and married Martha E. Hess in 1941. Mrs. Hasselbach passed away in  Texas on February 1, 1999. Mr. Hasselbach was a farmer all his life and worked at the local sugar beet factory during the winter months for thirty years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lindsey and was active in the area Farm Bureau.

Surviving are sons, Dennis L. of Fremont, and Larry J. Hasselbach of Lindsey; daughters, Penny K. Schroeder of Gibsonburg, Ohio, Deborah L. Broehm of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Mary A. Cox of Nashville, Tennessee; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church and visitation will be on Friday at Nopper-Karlovetz Mortuary in Fremont, Ohio. Memorials may be made to the church Building Fund, 231 S. Maple Street, Lindsey, Ohio 43442.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nopper-Karlovetz Mortuary, 900 North Street, Fremont, Ohio 43420.
