Juanita Atkinson Zepeda

HARLINGEN, TX — Mrs. Juanita A. Zepeda, 80, entered into eternal rest on February 6, 2001 at Retama Manor Nursing Center. She was native of Raymondville,  Texas and a longtime resident of Harlingen,  Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Christoval epeda; two sons, and a grandson, Manuel, Alfredo and Henry, Jr.

She is survived by Ninfa (Adan) Atkinson, Luisa Atkinson, Lupita (Antonio) Rios, Enrique Zepeda; two daughters-in-law, Irma and Ana Zepeda; 27 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

A rosary was recited on Wednesday, February 7, 2001, 7 p.m. at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Chapel.

A Mass will be held today, Thursday, February 8, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Bert Diaz officiating. Interment will follow at Harlingen City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Antonio Rios, Manuel Zepeda, Rolando Rios, Frank Rios, Jesus Atkinson, Jr., and Rogerio Atkinson.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Funeral Home, Harlingen,  Texas.

Bernice M. Bell

BAYVIEW, TX — Bernice M. Bell, 86, passed away February 6, 2001 at 3:58 p.m. at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Harlingen, TX. She was born August 4, 1914 and was a former resident of Evansville, IN. He retired from Ernge Realty in Evansville. She was also a long-time employee of Commercial Credit in Evansville. She was a 1934 graduate of Lockyear’s Business College.

She is survived by her sister, Chlorene Koob, Bayview, TX; nephew and niece who cared for her, Ricahrd and Sue Koob of Bayview, TX; and nephew, David Koob of Harlingen, TX.

Visitation will be Friday at 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714 with Reverend Henry L. Kuykendall officiating. Burial will be at Park Lawn Mausoleum 1526 S. Greenriver Rd, Evansville, Indiana.

Donations may be made to the Nativity Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Roberto Sandoval, Sr.

LA FERIA, TX — Roberto Sandoval, Sr., 68, entered into rest at his La Feria residence on Wednesday. Mr. Sandoval was a 28 year resident of La Feria and was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Sandoval; brother, Mauro Sandoval and his parents Elias and Rita Sandoval. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Rosa Emma Sandoval of La Feria, TX., daughters Rita (Orlando Flores) Sandoval of Adkins, TX., Laura (Ricardo) Sandoval-Hinojosa of Cypress, TX., sons, Robert (Maryann) Sandoval, Jr., of Brownsville, TX., Javier (Julissa) Sandoval of La Feria, TX, and Carlos Sandoval of La Feria, TX; grandchildren, Robert Sandoval, III, Michael Anthony Sandoval, Iliana Flores, Patricia Sandoval and Babyboy Hinojosa. He is also survived by his brothers, Emilio Sandoval of Houston, TX., Juan Sandoval of Houston, TX., Homero Sandoval of Eagle Pass, TX; sisters, Alma Martinez of Eagle Pass, TX., Arabela Fischer of Eagle Pass, TX., Genoveva Flores of Mexico, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, February 8, 2001 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Friday, February 9, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m., Mass of Christian burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. David  Jackson as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Joel Rodriguez, Michael Anthony Sandoval, Roque Tolenino, Sr., Ruben Valdez, Dionicio Leija, and Cid Flores.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home, La Feria,  Texas.

Roberto Rodriguez

MISSION, TX — Roberto "Beto" Rodriguez, age 74, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2001 in a local hospital.

Roberto was born on September 6, 1926 in Mission,  Texas to Catarino and Benita Rodriguez. He was a member of the United States Merchant Marines World War II. He was also a member of Catholic War Veterans and Knights of Columbus. He was the owner of Thunderbird Drive In Theater and Flea market for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years of marriage, Delia

Rodriguez of Corpus Christi,  Texas; five sons, Dr. Robert (Nuong) Rodriguez of Dallas,  Texas (formerly of Amarillo,  Texas), Ricahrd (Luisa) Rodriguez, Rolando (Lupita) Rodriguez all of Corpus Christi,  Texas, Raymond (Debra) Rodriguez of Weslaco,  Texas, Ronnie Rodriguez of Corpus Christi,  Texas; a daughter, Capt. Rachel (Louis) Mesorana of Corpus Christi,  Texas; three brothers, Ramon Rodriguez of Indio, CA., Raul Rodriguez of Perris, CA., Leobardo "Leo" Rodriguez of Weslaco,  Texas; two sisters, Sara Rodriguez of Weslaco,  Texas, Melida Rodriguez of Romoland, CA., 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at the Seaside Funeral Home with the rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. that evening at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 5830 Williams Dr., Corpus Christi,  Texas.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., today, Thursday, February 8, 2001 at Seaside Memorial Park, 4357 Ocean Dr., Corpus Christi,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Instituto de Cultura Hispanica Scholarship Fund.

Opal B. Sain

HARLINGEN,TEXAS — Opal B. Sain, 86, entered into eternal rest on February 6, 2001. She was a native of Baum,  Oklahoma and a longtime resident of Harlingen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. (Wes) Sain on September 1,1992.

She is survived by her two sons, John Sain, Jr. of Ruskin, Fl and Blake Sain of Harlingen,Tx; nine, grandchildren and several great grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters.

Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Combes Cemetery with Pastor Bob Cole, First Baptist Church of Combes, officiating.

Robert W. Pierce

Laguna Vista, TX — Robert W. Pierce of Laguna Vista, TX passed away at his home on February 3, 2001. He was 88. Mr. Pierce was a retired executive with Conoco Petrochemicals Division.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Robbie Q. Pierce and an infant son.

He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Jame P. Davidson of Reno, NV; two brothers, Lewis Pierce and Wesley Pierce of St. Louis, MO; a sister, Mabel Cole of Liberty, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Pierce was born January 12, 1913 in Belgrade MO to James W. and Bertha A. Pierce. He was employed by Conoco for thirty-eight years in the company’s refining and petrochemical divisions. Prior to that he had been a teacher in Missouri and Wyoming. He was a decorated veteran of World War II. Mr. Pierce served with the U.S. First Army Third Armored Division. He was part of the second wave of the Normandy invasion. He fought with distinction in France, Belgium and Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, his outfit helped to liberate the concentration camp at Nordhausen, Germany and was halted fifty miles outside Berlin at the end of the war. Mr. Pierce was awarded five of the six battle stars given for service in Europe in World War II. He also received the Purple Heart.

Mr. Pierce was a longtime member of All Saints Episcopal Church in San Benito, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the church.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2001 at 10 a.m. in Mont Meta Memorial Park with Father Eulalio Luna officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #205 & V.F.W. Post 2410.

Ima Leola Pace

WESLACO,TEXAS — Mrs. Ima Leola "Imogene" Pace, age 97, formerly of Weslaco,  Texas passed away Friday, February 2, 2001, at her residence in Corpus Christi.

She was born in the rural community of Roscoe, Nolan County,  Texas, on October 5, 1903, and was the daughter of William H. and Edna Reed McBurnett of Roscoe. She was a graduate of the Sweetwater on August 18, 1923. Shortly thereaftershe and her husband moved to Weslaco where she resided until 1985.

Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Keir Thompson (Baldwin), McAllen,  Texas; Jo Ann Logan (George) of Billings, Montana and Helen Francis Marcum of Corpus Christi,  Texas and one sister, Mrs. Almarine McDonald of Harlem, Montana; other survivors also include, 10 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa Clyde who passed away on January 4, 1967; a son, J.W. Pace, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on January 20, 1950, and two grandsons, David Marcum and Vincent Logan.

Garveside services will be held at the Weslaco City Cemetery, Weslaco,  Texas, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2001.

Honorary pallbearers are, Ray Dyer, Charles Miller, Bruce Lackey, George Logan, Baldwin Thompson and Roy Davis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Gilberto N. Gomez

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Gilberto N. Gomez, 78, passed away Monday, January 5, 2001 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Raymondville, TX. He was born April 2, 1922 in Bishop,  Texas to Angel and Maria (Niero) Gomez. He lived in Raymondville all his life.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m., February 8, 2001 at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Interment will follow at the Raymondville Memorial, Park Cemetery. A rosary will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Duddlesten Chapel.

He is survived by his son, Cliberto Gomez, Jr. of Raymondville; four daughters, Rosa Becerra of Munroe, LA, Maria Olvera of Raymondville, Chelda Garza of Harlingen and Gricelda Petty of Indiana; two sisters, Guadalupe Martinez of Donna and Lala Gomez of California. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Natalia Gomez in 1991 and grandson, Baby Roberto Olvera, Jr., in 1988.

Pallbearers will be Miguel Chapa, III, Gilberto Becerra, Andy Cantu, Gilberto Gomez, III, Andy Martinez, Mauel Martinez, Jr., Tony Rosas, and Ricardo Garza.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Maria Espindolo Perez

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria E. Espindolo Perez a member of the Valley Pioneer Family entered into rest on February 2, 2001 in Harlingen at the age of 94. Maria was born to Cipriano Espindola and Cruz Loya on June 5, 1906 in Brownsville,  Texas. She was married to Antonio Perez in 1924 and together raised 12 children.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Antonio Perez and one grandson, Johnny P. Hernandez.

She is survived by her 12 children, Alfonso E. Perez, Tony E. Perez of Harlingen, Ofelio E. Perez of Abereen, Idaho, Adan E. Perez of Richland, W. Virginia, Gilbert E. Perez of Houston,  Texas, Jesse E. Perez of San Antonio, Sophia E. Perez, Mary Lou P. Landeros, Bertha P. Torres of Harlingen, Eva E. Perez, Celia P. Hernandez of Vallego, CA, and Petra P. Gonzalez of Gonzalez,  Texas. She is also survived by 5 generations three times of grandchildren, and one brother, Jesus Loya Espindola.

Visitation was held yesterday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Alfonso E. Perez, Tony E. Perez, Ofelio E. Perez, Gilbert E. Perez, Jesse E. Perez, and Oscar Landeros. Honorary pallbearer will be Sylvestre Torres.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.
