Sandra Kay Fuller

SAN BENITO, TX — Sandra Kay Fuller passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at her home in San Benito. She was born on August 8, 1945, in Brownsville,  Texas to Robert and Kay Duke Telford.

Sandra completed her high school studies at Mary Mount International in Rome, Italy. After receiving her undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of Utah, and her masters in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, Sandra taught English at the American University in Cairo, Egypt and more recently worked in the field of research and grant writing. She resided in Salt Lake City, Utah and Bozeman, Montana before moving to San Benito in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Telford, and both her maternal and paternal grandparents.

She is survived by her son, Nicholas Fuller, and her mother, Kay Duke Telford, both of San Benito; her brothers, Steven (Robin) Telford of Atlanta, Georgia and Phillip Telford of Dallas,  Texas, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 21 at Thomae Funeral Home in San Benito.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, South  Texas Chapter, 3308 Broadway, Suites 209-210, San Antonio, TX 78209 (800-809-3953).

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home.

Genaro Garza

DONNA — Genaro Garza, 66, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at his residence in Donna. Genaro was born August 5, 1934 in Guadalupe, Zacatecas Mexico.

Mr. Garza is survived by his six children; four sisters, four nieces, and two nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11 a.m., today, Saturday, April 21, 2001. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Cemetery in Donna.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home, 968-7533.

Lillian Cox

LUBBOCK,  Texas — Lillian Nicole Cox, infant daughter of Shawn and Samantha Cox of Lubbock, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at Covenant Medical Center. Cremation is under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Survivors include her parents; maternal grandparent, Phil and Linda  Jones of Combes and paternal grandparents, Jere and Cindy Cox of Granbury,  Texas.

The family suggests memorials to S.H.A.R.E, P.O. Box 1201, Lubbock,  Texas 79408

Kayla Julie Hernandez

HARLINGEN, TX — Kayla Julie Hernandez, 2 ½ years old entered into rest on April 19, 2001 in Corpus Christi,  Texas.

She is survived by her parents, Carlos Hernandez and Sonia I. Hernandez of Harlingen; one sister, Karla Michelle Hernandez; paternal grandparents, Juan and Julia Schommer of Harlingen; maternal grandparents, Juan and Laurentina Zavala of Mexico and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral service will be held today, April 21, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen, interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Curtis Lee "Chuck" Likens

WESLACO, TX — Curtis Lee "Chuck" Likens, 58, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at his residence in Weslaco. His devoted family was at his side.

Mr. Likens was a longtime Knapp Medical Center employee and an avid golfer. He enjoyed the great outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Eloisa Likens; sons, Brian, Steven, George Likens, Darryl Ross (Vickie) and a daughter, Nancy Moore (David). Also surviving are his mother, Bernice Childress Likens; brothers-in-law, Eliseo Ruiz Jr., and wife, Dora and Frank Ruiz and wife, Isaura; sister-in-law, Mary Herevia and husband, Lupe; mother and father-in-law, Eliseo and Rosario Ruiz, Sr. and 4 grandchildren.

Visitation and prayer service was held Friday, April 20, 2001 at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 2 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel 900 W. 4th in Weslaco with Reverend, Daniel Davila, Chaplain Knapp Medical Center, as the officiant.

Serving as pallbearers will be Steven Likens, Marty Martinez, Mike Cadena, Ken Oates, Roy Fuentes, and Abel Alonzo. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Noel De Leon. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home (956) 968-7533 iin Weslaco.

Frank Romo Sr.

SAN BENITO, TX — Frank Romo, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 in Harlingen. Frank was born December 5, 1948 in Waco,  Texas to Baldomero and Julia Romo. He married Rosie Olvera Romo on April 20, 1991.

He was preceded in death by his father Baldomero Romo Sr. in 1999.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Rosie O. Romo; sons, Sergio Romo of San Benito, Frank Romo Jr. of Waco, Francisco, Anthony, and Johnny Romo all of San Benito; his daughter, Christie of San Benito, and Yvette Fierro of Belton and his mother, Julia Romo of Waco; a sister, Rose Torres and her husband, Edward Torres of Waco; brothers, Baldomero Romo Jr. of Nogales, Arizona, Johnny Romo of Waco, Raul R. Romo of Sunnyvale, California, and Daniel Romo of Waco. Five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; cousins, and his many good friends.

Frank was dearly loved, his memories are forever etched in our hearts.

A Holy Rosary will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Chapel on 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito

Funeral Mass will be officiated Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 10 a.m., St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito,  Texas.

Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Mesa, Johnny Romo, Joe Mendoza, Edward Torres, David Olvera, and Daniel Romo.

military Honors are under the direction of American Legion Post #205 V.F.W. Post #2410 of Harlingen,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Leonard E. Hein

BEMIDJI, MN — Leonard E. Hein, age 83, of Bemidji, MN and a winter resident of Harlingen, TX died Tuesday April 17, 2001 in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji, Minnesota.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001 in the United Methodist Church, Bemidji. Interment with will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji under the direction of Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home.

Leonard Ellis Hein was born, at Linn Grove, Iowa, to Frank and Ida (Rolfsen) Hein January 1, 1918. After he graduated from high school in Herman , MN he moved to Bemidji, MN and worked at Bemidji Auto Parts while attending Bemidji State College. He served in the US Air Force during WWII. He married Trudy Kennedy July 22, 1942 in Brownsville,  Texas. After his discharge, they returned to Bemidji and he resumed working at Bemidji Auto Parts. He then founded Bemidji Welders Supply. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bemidji, ADD Shrine Temple in Duluth, MN and was a member and past president of the Headwaters Shrine Club in Bemidji. He also belonged to the American Legion, Bemidji Elks Lodge and the NRA. He was a member of the Bemidji Town and Country Club and a member of the Harlingen,  Texas Country Club.

He is survived by his wife - Trudy Hein, Bemidji, MN; 1 Daughter - Leslie (Alan) Hartje, Bemidji; 1 Son - Paul Hein, Bemidji; 6 Grandchildren and 4 great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 3 sisters and 1 grandson.

Funeral services are under the direction of Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN.

Pedro Cadenas

COMBES, TX — Pedro Cadenas, 81, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 in San Antonio,  Texas. Mr. Cadenas was born in San Miguel de Allende, Gto., Mexico on June 23, 1919 to Lorenzo and Isabel Cadenas.

He is preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters and a grandson, Michael Allen Cadenas.

Mr. Cadenas was a retired farmer having worked in the Combes area for many years. He was an active member of Primera Iglesia Bautista in Combes,  Texas. Mr. Cadenas was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family. His family will remember him for his patience and his sense of humor. Most of all Pedro loved his Creator. He was a giving person and was well respected by the Church members, his friends and neighbors.

Surviving Pedro is his loving wife of 59 years, Gregoria Cadenas from Combes,  Texas, one daughter, Lupe C. Weaver from Combes,  Texas. Six sons, Conce (Elida) Cadenas from Lyford,  Texas, Joe (Ruby) Cadenas from Los Angeles, California, Juan (Lucy) Cadenas from Harlingen,  Texas, David (Linda) Cadenas from Copperas Cove,  Texas, Ruben (Hope) Cadenas from Harlingen,  Texas, and Eli (Janie) Cadenas from Combes,  Texas.

He is survived by nine grandchildren, Cindy Rodriguez, Mark Weaver, Joshua Cadenas, Nicholas Cadenas, John David Cadenas, Jennifer Cadenas, Amanda Cadenas, Caleb Pedro Cadenas, and Jacob Josue Cadenas. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 20, 2001 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Family members will receive visitors throughtout the day with prayer service at 7 p.m. under the direction of Chaplain Joe Jaime.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Funeral Chapel under the direction of Chaplain Joe Jaime. Interment will follow at Combes Cemetery in Combes, TX.

Pallbearers will be Conce Cadenas, Joe Cadenas, Juan Cadenas, David Cadenas, Ruben Cadenas and Eli Cadenas.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Alejandro, as well as all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel located at 1217 S. F Street in Harlingen,  Texas.

Zaragoza Lozano

HARLINGEN — Zaragoza Lozano, age 90, went to be with the Lord Wednesday evening. He was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.

Survivors include his wife, Felipa Lozano of Harlingen; daughters, Maria Luisa Lozano of Harlingen; step children, Ida Lee (Juan) Chavez and Janie Galicia of Harlingen; one brother, Geronimo Lozano of Harlingen.

Funeral mass will be held today, 10 a.m., Friday, April 20, 2001 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will then follow at Las Rucias Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapels of Harlingen.

Israel (Izzy) Sarmiento

DALLAS — Israel (Izzy) Sarmiento passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Dallas, TX. Israel was born December 16, 1962, in Weslaco, TX to Carmen Sarmiento Jr. and Virginia Rodriguez.

Israel was a Sr. Cpl. Officer with the Dallas Police Department assigned to the Tactical Division for the past 13 years.

He is survived by his Daughters Adriana and Monica Sarmiento; Father Carmen Sarmiento; brothers, Carmen III, Ruben, Saul, Samuel, Juan Jose, and Efrain Sarmiento; sisters, Sylvia Sarmiento, Paula Cortez, Trinidad Sarmiento, Maria Dolores Mendoza, Estella Perez, Alicia Sarmiento, Juanita Sarmiento, and Viviana Sarmiento; maternal grandmother Cesaria Rodriguez. He is also survived by numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins who loved him dearly.

Funeral Service will be held today, at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of Duncanville. 323 Wheatland Rd. Other services include, Prayer Service 7 p.m. Thursday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco, TX. Funeral Service 2 p.m., Friday at Bethel Baptist Church in Progreso, TX. Interment Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco, TX.

A memorial fund in the name of Israel Sarmiento has been set up at the City Employees Credit Union, 7474 Ferguson Rd. Dallas,  Texas 75228. Account #1141450.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gonzalez Funeral Home in Dallas.

Ione E. Ryun

HARLINGEN, TX - Ione E. Ryun, 78, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2001 in a local health care center. Ione was born August 24, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN to Eli and Inger Eielson. Ione has been a resident of Harlingen for over 24 years. Ione was a member of the Harlingen Country Club; St. Marks Lutheran Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. Ione was raised in Story City, Iowa.

Survivors include her son, Gary Ryun.

No local services will be held; a committal will be held at a later date in Resthaven Memorial Park in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
