Mario Garcia-Muñoz

HARLINGEN — Mario Garcia-Muñoz was born on April 5, 1923 in Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. He went to be with the Lord in Heaven on May 31, 2001 at his residence. His family was at his side.

Mr. Garcia-Muñoz was preceded in death by his father, Ignacio Garcia; his mother, Anna Maria Muñoz-Garcia; and two daughters, both named Maria Luisa. He is survived by his wife, Claudia Galvez de Garcia; 5 sons and 2 daughters, Ignacio Antonio, Mario, Jr., (Diana Longoria), Jorge Arnoldo (Terri Pawlowski), Maria de los Angeles (Juan Longoria), Raul (Arminda Marroquin), Dr. Anna Maria Garcia (Vicente Ortiz) and Luis (Therese Marie Layman); 19 grandchildren, Diane Irene, Javier Antonio Tizoc (Dawn Rogers), Sergio Antonio Cuahtemoc, Jaime Antonio Axayacatl, Velma Jo Ann Kotzur (Frank), Melissa Siebert (Eric), Monica Calderon (Mario), Crystal Mayberry, Cindy Juarez (Gabriel), Patricia Pedraza (Ceasar), Veronica Longoria, Raul Jr., Nadia, Tina Patricia, Jessica Marie, Jose Luis, Luis Mario, Jonathan William and Andrew Luis; and 14 great-grandchildren, Dante Antonio Iztoc, Juliette Lynn, Urban Joseph Kotzur, Andria and Nicholas Siebert, Brittany Glaze and Kameron Calderon, Victoria Diamante, Nicole Deandra and Nathan Dante Juarez, Christian Patrick Crayton, Alexis Lauren Pedraza and Christian Rey Rodriguez.

At the age of 15, Mario began working for Ferrocarriles de Mexico as a line railroad assistant in and around Jalapa, Veracruz. By the age of 22, he had married Claudia Galvez and worked as a painter in Mexico City and Valsequillo, Puebla. He came to the United States in 1945 and became a legal resident of this country in 1955.

In Harlingen, he worked with the Harlingen Water Works ("Yo trabaje en el pico y la pala" – I worked with the pick and the shovel) and Pepsi Cola.

He quickly learned the English vernacular of his trade and consistently relied on his children for assistance in improving his knowledge of English. At the grass roots level, Mario, like many Mexican immigrants, played an important role in the economic development of his adopted country and his Harlingen community. In his 56 years of living in Harlingen, he consistently provided jobs to at least 6 workers and was very proud of being self-employed.

Throughout his 56 years of service to his trade, he gave from his heart and always thanked his God for the many blessings he received. "Le doy Gracias a Dios porque a mi nunca me falta trabajo" (I thank God because I always have work), he often said to his children. Mario’s hard work and honest living was exemplified as he provided a fair price for his clients and a fair wage for his workers.

In the early 1950’s, he often had a crew of up to 10 men working in and around Harlingen. Like many immigrants, he overcame many of the challenges of his adopted land. He overcame prejudice, insensitivity and the abuse of those who took advantage of illegal immigrants. He was always able to look people in the eyes knowing that his work was honest, fair and just. As a painter, he painted houses and businesses throughout Harlingen, the Valley and South  Texas.

He developed some beautiful friendships with many "patrones." These friendships were noble and sincere. He was quick-witted and a romantic at heart. A self-educated man, Mario read consistently, listened to Mexican information radio stations of the 40’s and 50’s and watched the current education and talk shows. His favorite topics included government, economics and religion. He talked about his uncles in Mexico, who were lawyers, educators, engineers and businessmen. He remembered one uncle in particular who served as Secretary of Public Education in Jalapa, Veracruz and in Mexico City.

His love for his Mexican roots was very evident. He always thanked and remembered his aunt, Maria Luisa Garcia de Aburto, as the surrogate mother who took a young orphan child and instilled in him the love of God, duty and honor. In his life, the path of God’s love was clear.

Although a man of the world, his duty to his wife as a provider was never compromised. He loved to read and debate universal issues. His friends will remember that Mario loved to talk. To his children, he gave the gifts of love, respect, a sense of responsibility and independence. While his love for his native Mexico never left his heart, he encouraged his children to work hard and be part of and never apart from his adopted country. His pride was always seen as he talked about his children in college and in the military (2 career U.S. Army soldiers, one a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, a captain and a specialist in the U.S. Army Dental Corps and a young marine who served in Vietnam). He was especially proud of his children as leaders in their work.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and always found time to help his church. He loved to cook and often helped with fund raising activities. Mario "el pintor," as referred by many, loved to talk and make friends. If he met you and you gave him a minute, you made a friend for life. He would go out of his way to please you.

Mario is now with his Maker. His wife, children and grandchildren will remember him as a man who loved life. He lived life one day at a time and accepted life as it was and not as it should be. His gentle heart will always be with us. His steadfastness will be with us. His love of God and life will be with us. Mario, "el pintor," has gone to rest. However, he left a legacy that will continue to encourage his offspring with a sense of responsibility to God, duty and honor.

"I‘m Free"

Don‘t grieve for me, for now I‘m Free. I‘m following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day to laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss. Ah yes, these things I, too, will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life‘s been full, I savored much…good friends, good times, a loved one‘s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Don‘t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me. God wanted me now, He set me free.
