Christine Andrews Paul

WESLACO — Christine Andrews Paul, 91, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2001 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. On March 8, 1910 she was the first born girl in Christine,  Texas where she grew up and attended school and lived until she married Herman Paul on September 30, 1927. They lived in many south  Texas towns and in 1938 settled into the community of Petronila where they lived for 38 years raising their five children. After Mr. Paul‘s retirement in 1967, they moved to Devine and later to Weslaco. Christine was active in the Eastern Star and many Methodist Churches across  Texas.

Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Herman in 1993. She is survived by one son, William Herman Paul Jr. and wife Geneva of Augusta, SC; four daughters, Georgia Wahl and husband Benny of Weslaco, Pauline Pollard of Robstown, Colleen Flaherty and husband C.N. "Chuck" of Pineville, LA, Gloria Blanton and husband Ronald of Boerne. Mrs. Paul was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and two great great grandsons; sister, Jenna May Bell of Houston; sisters-in-law Clara Paul, Louise Paul and Doris Graham, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Christine First Baptist Church in Christine,  Texas with the Rev. Dennis Thompson of Bandera officiating. Interment will then follow at the Christine City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Those who wish to make memorial donations may do so to the First United Methodist Church in Weslaco or to the charity of one‘s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home.

Guadalupe C. Rodriguez

RAYMONDVILLE — Guadalupe C. Rodriguez, 77, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. She was born August 8, 1923 in Raymondville to Jose and Sara (Pena) Correa. She was a member of the Guadalupanas, Ladies Auxiliary, retired after working for RISD for over 20 years and the Amigos Del Valle. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary will be Wednesday, 7 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel.

She is survived by her three sons, Eloy (Blanche) Rodriguez of Harlingen, Ernesto Rodriguez of McAllen and Enrique (Sarah) Rodriguez of Mission; two daughters, Elva G. (Noe Sr.) Gonzales of Raymondville and Emilia R. (Scott) Williamson of Corpus Christi; one brother, Ruben Salazar of Hargill and one sister, Benigna (Bennie) Garza of Corpus Christi. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Javier Gonzales, Ernie Rodriguez Jr., Noe Gonzales Jr., Michael S. Williamson, Sergio Rodriguez and Roy Rodriguez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Helen Marlow

MODESTO,  Calif. — Helen Marlow, 77, of Modesto passed away Saturday at Hy-Lond Convalescent Center.

Mrs. Marlow was a native of Gramling, S.C. She lived in Modesto many years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Centenary Methodist Church. She was a volunteer at Memorial Medical Center for more than 15 years. She was also active in United Methodist Women at Centenary United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, William Marlow of Modesto; children, William Marlow of Columbus, Ohio, John Marlow of Harlingen,  Texas, Bert Marlow of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., Fitz Marlow of Modesto and Charles Marlow of Pacific Grove; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church. No public visitation. Private services. The Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs is in charge of arrangements.

Remembrances may be made to Centenary United Methodist Memorial Fund, 1911 Toyon Ave., Modesto 95350 or Community Hospice, 601 McHenry Ave., Modesto 95350.

Manuela G. Sandoval

HARLINGEN, TX — Manuela G. Sandoval, 72, of Harlingen entered into rest May 28, 2001 at a local hospital.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ygnacio Sandoval of Harlingen; daughters, Maria Elena Guerra and Graciela Candanoza both of Houston and Irma Zornes of New Braunfels; her son, Raul Sandoval of Houston; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Consuelo Diaz of McAllen and a brother, Ramiro Gonzalez of Houston.

She is preceded in death by her son, Rudy Sandoval.

Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.

Funeral servies will be held Thursday departing the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial and interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mark Zornes, Roland Guerra, Michael Guerra, Derek Sandoval, Santos Guerra and Julian Candanoza.

We would like to thank the staff at Retama Manor Nursing Home, Dr. Torkildsen and the Valley Baptist Hospital 5th floor nurses.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Marguerite Mullere

ELSA / HARLINGEN — Marguerite Mullere, 86, along time Valley resident passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Marguerite was born to Melvin Tarver and Valerie Alverson on March 16, 1915 in Bonham,  Texas. She married Marcel Jean "Frenchie" Mullere in Harlingen in 1938. They moved to Elsa, where she worked at Engleman Gardens Produce Company and at the Skyline Drive In Movie theater. She and her husband moved to McAllen in 1962 where she worked as a switch board operator for many years until the death of her husband in 1970. She then moved to the Harlingen area in 1972 where she lived with her son, Jean. She is preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, T.B. Tarver and Babe Ruth Tarver.

Marguerite is survived by her son, Jean Marcel Mullere and his wife, Mary Jane of San Benito; two brothers, Doyle Tarver of Houston and Denver Tarver of California; grandchildren, Cindy Richter of La Vernia,  Texas, Darla Tilden and Starla Hughston both of San Benito, Charles Robert Mullere of Columbus, Kan., and eight great grandchildren, Zachary, Ashlynn, Landon, Ashley, Taylor, Shelby, Hunter and Eric. Graveside services will be held today Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Officiating will be David Mann, Chaplain at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home.

Christine Paul

WESLACO — Funeral services for Christine Paul, 91, will be Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Christine Baptist Church in Christine, TX. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Arrangements are pending under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Marguerite Mullere

HARLINGEN — Marguerite Mullere, 86, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Visitation for Mrs. Mullere will take place Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home with family present from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Marcos Antonio Martinez

LA FERIA — Marcos Antonio Martinez, 36, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of La Feria.

"I’m Free"

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free. I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and left it all.

He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Martinez Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Guillerma Garcia Martinez; 2 brothers, Manuel Martinez Jr. and Mario Martinez; 2 sisters, Martha Tovar and Melinda Martinez; and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at 12 p.m. at La Feria Faith Church with pastors Oscar Laredo and Rene Vega officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home, 2906 S. Expressway 77-83, Harlingen, TX.

Ara B. Haddock

PHARR — Ara B. Haddock, 103, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001 at San Juan Nursing Home.

She came to the Valley in 1935 and was a permanent resident of Pharr since 1936. She resided at Twinbrooke South Nursing Home in McAllen in 1986 and then moved to San Juan Nursing Home in 1991. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Pharr.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Nathaniel Haddock in 1971 and by 10 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her son, Ronal T. Haddock of Harlingen; grandson, Ronal D. Haddock of Freeport, TX; and by a niece.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29 at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery on North  Taylor Road in McAllen with Pastor Mike Flanagan officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Skinner-Silva Funeral Home of Pharr.

Raul Cortez

LYFORD — Mr. Raul Cortez, 76, passed away on Thursday 24 May 2001 at his residence in Lyford. He was born on 7 June 1924 in Sebastian to Mr. and Mrs. Romulo Cortez.

He is survived by his children, Reyes (Mary) Cortez, Enedina (Tony) Layton, Raul (Berta) Cortez Jr., Johnny (Terressa) Cortez, Rene (Irene) Cortez; grandchildren, Sandra (Mark) Kent, Ricardo (Mary) Cortez, Stephanie (Charles) Beddow, Reyes Cortez Jr., Tony (Ruby) Layton Jr., Tammie (Alex) Torres, Michelle Layton, John Charles Cortez, Brittney Cortez,  Taylor Cortez, Rebecca Cortez, Diane Cortez, Kristen Cortez, Danielle Cortez, Alyssa Cortez, Sonya (Don) Dairymple, Annette Cortez, Deanna Cortez, and Kathryn Cortez; brothers, Valentin, Felipe, Trinidad and Arnulfo Cortez; sisters, Enedina Cortez, and Maximina Cortez; sisters-in-law, Eustalia Salinas, Alejandra Cruz, Antonia Loya, and Lydia Loya. He is preceded in death by his wife, Raquel on 18 March 2001 and a son on November 1964. Pallbearers will be Reyes Cortez, Raul Cortez Jr., Johnny Cortez, Rene Cortez, Antonio Layton Jr., and Ricardo Cortez.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Hernandez Funeral Home. Visitation on Tuesday, May 29 will be from 8:30 a.m. till 10 a.m. at which time a funeral Mass will be celebrated at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lyford, TX. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Lyford. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hernandez Funeral Home in Raymondville.

Maria Raquel Castelan

LA FERIA — Maria Raquel Castelan, 78, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center due to a lengthy illness. She was a native of Tulancingo de Bravo, Mexico. She had lived in La Feria most of her life. She was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Epifanio Rangel Castelan; and 3 children, Baby Boy Castelan, Rosita Castelan and Antonio Castelan. She is survived by 12 children, Genaro (Minerva) Castelan of Dover, FL, Domingo (Patricia) Castelan of Santa Rosa, TX, Epifanio (Elia) Castelan Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL, Roberto (Barbara J.) Castelan of Republic, OH, Tomas (Consuelo) Castelan of La Feria, TX, Reynaldo (Rosita) Castelan of Bryan, TX, Gerardo (Rosemary) Castelan of La Feria, TX, Mary (Juan) Ortiz of Austin, TX, Josefina (Calvin) Wright of Pasadena, TX, Liboria (Federico) Ortiz of Dallas, TX, Yolanda (Ed) Howell of Harlingen, TX, and Herlinda Castelan of La Feria; and 50 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren.

A Rosary was recited Sunday evening and the Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28 at St. Francis of Xavier Catholic Church with Father Carlos celebrating the Mass. Interment will follow at Solis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Proverbs 31:31, "Give her the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates."

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Trinity Funeral Chapels in Harlingen, 1217 South F Street.

Francisco Hernandez

HARLINGEN — Francisco Hernandez, 92, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001 at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Leonor Hernandez of Harlingen; sons, Beto Solis of Indio, CA, Charlie Martinez of Houston, Francisco Hernandez Jr. of Florida, and Carlos Hernandez of Harlingen; daughters, Janie Torres of Harlingen, Ramona Hernandez of Arkansas, Leonor Hernandez of Florida, Petra Garcia of Harlingen, Maria Reyes of Harlingen, and Lupita Barrera of Harlingen; and 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Ester Medrano of Brownsville, Geronimo Hernandez of Progresso, Abigail Cuevas, Petra Reyes, Librada Escandon and Pepe Hernandez all of Matamoros, Mexico.

Visitation will be held today from 4 p.m. ‘til 9 p.m. A Rosary will be recited Mon., May 28 at 7 p.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The Mass will be on Tues., May 29 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapels in Harlingen, 1217 South F Street.

Robert Park Frix

HARLINGEN — Robert Park Frix, 85, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001 in Camelot Assisted Living. Robert was born on the family farm in Nash, TX on Sept. 5, 1915 to Nesbyt and Minnie Kelly Frix.

His family moved to the Valley when he was a young boy. He graduated from Stuart Place High School, where his favorite teacher, Mrs. Stanley Crockett, wrote his Valedictory address. She was also an honored guest at his 80th birthday party. Robert attended college in Tex-Arkana, Arkansas and Stephen F. Austin in Nachadoches, TX. Bob was proud of his contribution to the World War II effort by assisting in the construction of military installations including the Hanford Nuclear Site in  Washington State where his son manages one of the companies clearing up the radioactive waste.

Mr. Frix spent his life engaged in farming and related activities. He raised his family in Mercedes, where he was a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge 32-degree Mason and a member of the Harlingen Alzafar Shrine.

Robert is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, JoAnne Scott Frix and son Frederick Lewis Frix. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Maj. Gen. Robert Scott and Maurine Frix and their children Alexander and Michele of  Washington State; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Andrew and Joanna Burgess of Houston; granddaughter, Leslie Scott Lokey; sister, Flora Davis of Texarkana; brother, C.D. Frix and wife of San Antonio, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert acquired many friends during his lifetime. His family is especially grateful to the Carl Bauer family of La Feria, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Burns of Harlingen and Mrs. Erva Puckett also of Harlingen and formerly of Mercedes.

There will be a celebration of his life at the Camelot Retirement Village, 1000 Camelot in Harlingen at 5 p.m., Monday, May 28, 2001. The white tailed bucks of South  Texas are breathing sighs of relief knowing of their added safety for seasons to come.

Bob has a new lease in the Happy Hunting Ground. Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Robert C. Sparr

WESLACO — Robert C. Sparr, 92, Weslaco, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at John Knox Village. Memorial Services will be Tuesday, May 29, at 11 AM at John Knox Village Chapel. He was born in Wayne County Ohio, the son of Ernest and Anna Cutter Sparr. He worked over 35 years for the Timken Roller Bearing Company in Wooster, Ohio, retiring in 1969. He became a part time resident of the valley in 1970, and a permanent resident in 1991. His wife, Irene, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Ted M. and Kathleen C. Sparr, Durham, New Hampshire; daughter, Nan S. Allen, Silver Spring, Maryland; grandson, Robert H. Sparr, Menlo Park, California; and granddaughter and her spouse, Elizabeth I. and Michael Hilliard.

Jesus Javier Villarreal

HARLINGEN — Jesus Javier Villarreal, 21, who was born May 20, 1980 in Harlingen,  Texas to Juan and Elizabeth Villarreal, went to be with the Lord on May 25, 2001 in Harlingen.

Survivors of Mr. Villarreal are his wife, Laura Villarreal; two daughters, Denise Elizabeth and Destiny Elise Villarreal; mother, Elizabeth Villarreal; four brothers, Juan, Jr., Jorge, Jose and Gilberto Villarreal; and one sister, Julia Villarreal, all of Harlingen, TX. Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and one nephew also survive him. His father, Juan A. Villarreal, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 27, 2001 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Kreidler-Ashcraft Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 28, 2001 at Assumption Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Olmales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Reynaldo Gonzales, Gilberto, Jose, Jorge, Roy and Romero, Jr. Villarreal.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kreidler-Ashcraft Funeral Home.
