Rita G. Cortez

RIO HONDO — Rita G. Cortez, 82, entered into rest on Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Dolly Vinsant Hospital in San Benito, TX. Mrs. Cortez was a lifelong resident of Rio Hondo and was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Cortez. She is survived by her loving family: daughters, Adela (Roberto) Gonzalez, Anita Cortez, Alicia (Jose) Martinez, Angelica Cortez; and son, Arnoldo (Maria A.) Cortez, all of Rio Hondo. Her grandchildren, Melissa Martinez, Jaime Martinez, Jesus Jose Cortez, Michael Cortez and Erika Cortez, great-granddaughter Reanna Gonzalez and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, May 27, 2001 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Monday, May 28, 2001 at 9:15 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Helen’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Rio Hondo Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roberto Gonzalez, Jose Martinez, Arnold Cortez, Irieno Hernandez, Jaime Martinez and Jesus Jose Cortez.

Blas G. Galvan

MERCEDES, TX — Blas G. Galvan, 78, a lifetime resident of Mercedes, passed away Monday, April 16, 2001, at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. He was born November 11, 1922 to Isabel Galvan and Eulalia Garza Galvan in Mercedes.

On January 19, 1943 he enlisted into the United States, Army, where he earned many recognitions, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He served his country until November 15, 1945.

He is survived by his children, Ismael Galvan of Madrid Spain, Blas E. (Nelda) Galvan of Moore,  Oklahoma, Nellie (Leo) Galvan Perez of San Juan, and Jaime (Nora) Galvan of Harlingen.

He is also survived by his wife, Blanca Galvan of Mercedes, and children, Juan Alberto (Abigail) of Donna, Eulaia (Dan) Glavan Haile of Tyler, Edward Galvan of Mercedes, and Vanessa Galvan of Mercedes.

He is also survived by a sister, Celia (George) Wink of Santa Maria, California; brothers, Eduardo (Minnie) Galvan of Huntington Beach, California, Ernesto (Lucia) Galvan of El Paso, and sister-in-law Zoila Galvan of Mercedes; 16 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Santos Galvan.

Pallbearers were Eduardo Galvan, Raul Galvan, Jaime Galvan, Daniel L. Glavan, Edward Galvan, and Juan Alberto Glavan.

Interment was at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Weslaco.

Brian Matthew Graham

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Brian Matthew Graham, 29 years old, passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at his home. He was born November 2, 1971.

Brian graduated from Pace High School in 1990 where he was voted most handsome his senior year. He attended the University of Mississippi at Oxford and Baylor University at Waco where he lived and worked for the past five years, returning to Brownsville in December 2000. He loved the outdoors, snow skiing, water skiing, hunting, fishing and the beach.

Brian attended St. Mary’s Church and was an altar boy in his younger days. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kevin Graham and his grandparents, Merlin Rasco, Dut Graham and Catherine Graham.

He is survived by his parents, Joe and Beverly Graham; brother, Joseph Graham; grandmothers, Thelma Rasco and Coralie D. Graham and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Darling-Mouser Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 3 p.m. on Friday with Monsignor Gustavo C. Barrera officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jack Graham, Bradley Graham, Christopher Graham, Joseph Graham, David Graham and Joe Durrance.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Episcopal Day School or St. Joseph Academy.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd., Brownsville, 546-7111.

The Honorable Fidencio G. Garza Jr.

United States Magistrate Judge

Judge Garza was born in Mercedes,  Texas on January 4, 1932, to attorney Fidencio G. Garza Sr. and Fela Villarreal Garza, a public school educator. He graduated from Mercedes High School in 1949, and received his B.A. from  Texas A & I College. He received his Juris Doctor degree from South  Texas College of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1961.

Fidencio Garza married Eva Mae Trevino of Brownsville on Dec. 26, 1952. They have four children; Fidencio G. III, Eva Cheryll Guevara, Judena Marie and Vickie Gerard; grandchildren are Aaron Jesse, John Michael, Gabrielle Marie and Anthony Thomas Guevara.

Judge Garza was first appointed as Part-time U.S. Magistrate Judge in 1981 and was appointed Full-time U.S. Magistrate Judge in 1984. Prior to his Part-time appointment, he practiced general law from 1962 to 1984.

Other public service includes serving three terms on the Board of Trustees for Brooks County Independent School District, 1965 to 1971. He was County Judge of Brooks County from 1971-1978. Judge Garza was an original member of the  Texas Commission on Jail Standards appointed by Governor Dolph Briscoe in 1975. Additionally, he has been involved in Campfire Girls, Inc., Cub Scouts, drug abuse councils and Parent-Teacher organizations.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2001 at St. Mary‘s Catholic Church with Monsignor Gustavo C. Barrera officiating. Burial will then follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Craig H. Vittitoe, Frank Perez, Frank Zabarte, Arnold Aguilar, Paul Hajjar and Gilbert Piette.

Honorary pallbearers will be Judge James De Anda, Judge George Kazan, Judge William Mallett; Judge Marcel Notzon, Judge Reynaldo Garza, Fred Rusteberg, Sheldon Weisfeld, Art Nelson, John Williamson, Jim Brown, Dennis Sanchez, Tony Diaz, M.D., Christopher Pierson, Sandy Hall, Bryson Whitlock, Judge John Dominguez.

Marjorie E. Carsey

HARLINGEN — Marjorie E. Carsey, died on May 22, 2001 in Harlingen at the age of 79. Marjorie E. Carsey was born April 24, 1922 in Webster City, Iowa to Joseph and Madge Mason.

Survivors include her brothers, Jack (Doris) Mason of Harlingen, Masil J. (Charlotte) Mason of Ellicott City, MD and Miles S (Lois) Mason of Webster City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband Maynard Carsey.

Funeral services will be held in Webster City, Iowa at a later date. No local services. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kreidler-Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Paula Cortez Aguilar

HARLINGEN — Paula Cortez Aguilar, 87, of Harlingen entered into rest May 21, 2001 at her residence. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and a rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 25, 2001 departing the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Church with Father Shanley officiating and interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Rincones, Steven Cordero, Juan Rodriguez, Zosimon Aguilar and Henry Hernandez, Abel Palacios.

She is survived by her daughters, Evangelina Cordero of Harlingen, Aurora A. Flores of Chicago, Manuela Martinez of California, Maria Eva Martinez of Harlingen and Janie Rodriguez of Belton and her son, Simon Aguilar of Connecticut; 28 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Also surviving her is a brother Gregorio Cortez of San Antonio and a sister, Enriquetta Hernandez of Harlingen. She is preceded in death by her husband Andres Aguilar Sr., daughter, Irma Aguilar and two sons, Andres Aguilar Jr. and Gregorio Aguilar.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

George W. Vanderford, Jr.

HARLINGEN, TX — George W. Vanderford, Jr., 83, entered into rest on Tuesday at Retama Manor Nursing Center.

Mr. Vanderford was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Billie Jo Vanderford of Harlingen, TX; sons, Tommy (Jackie) Vanderford, Gary Vanderford; daughter, Dottie Turner; sister, Bobbie (Bill) Pace; special brother-in-law, Bill Townsend of Combes, TX. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

George proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Sea Bee during World War II.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 25, 2001, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Roses, with a military graveside service to follow at 2 p.m. at Combes Cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion Post 205 and V.F.W. Post 2410 and Rev. Bob Cole.

The family would like to give special thanks to Bill Lowe and Retama Manor Nursing Center and Omega Hospice of Brownsville, TX for all their love and care for George, and the Rudy Garza Funeral Home staff for all their love and courtesies extended to the family.

Nazario "Chalo" Cavazos

MERCEDES, TX — Nazario "Chalo" Cavazos, 60, passed away Monday night at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dionicio "Nicho" Cavazos in 1989 and is survived by his wife of 39 years Lucia Cavazos of Mercedes; three sons, Nazario Cavazos, Jr., Roy (Dina) Cavazos, and Jose Luis Cavazos all of Mercedes; three daughters, San Juanita (Chuck) Cavazos-Kent of Willis, TX, and Belinda Cavazos-Garcia, Gloria Cavazos-Aldape both of Mercedes; his mother, Guadalupe Montoya of Mercedes; a brother, Jose Teodoro Montoya of Mercedes; six sisters, Herlinda Montoya and Irma Martinez both of Mercedes, Maria Luisa Zavala of San Antonio, Rosa De La Fuente of Floryda, TX, Diana Cuellar of Idaho, and Carmen Gil of Houston; also surviving are seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes, interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Manuel Canales

LOS INDIOS, TX — Manuel Canales, 83, passed away Thursday morning at his residence. Mr. Canales was born to Manuel and Maria Canales in Pearsall, TX on October 16, 1918.

He was preceded in death by his infant son; one brother and his parents.

Mr. Canales is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 48 years Constancia (Nena) Canales of Los Indios; five sons, Luis (Mary Ann) Canales of Harlingen, Rudy Canales of Los Indios, Manuel (Oralia) Canales of Christine, TX, Abel Canales of Alice, Roberto (Bernadette) Canales of  Texas City, TX; three daughters, Maria (Juan) Zavala of Richwood, TX, Rosalinda (Guadalupe) Flores of Los Indios, Elva (Policarpio) Nachie of Santa Rosa; four sisters, Pepa Saenz of Loredo, Carmen Herrera of Haywood, CA, Esperanza Garcia of Fort Worth and Andrea Perez of Alice; also surviving are sixteen grandchildren.

Mr. Canales was a man who took great pride in his family and serving his country.

A quiet man he was, but one that had great strength within himself and for his family.

Our dad planted a seed in each if his children in hopes that his wisdom and strength will be carried on forever.

Mr. Canales was a veteran that served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the following decorations and citations, 1 service stripe, 6 overseas service bars, the American Defense Service Medal, Occupational Medal of Germany, American Campaign Medal, WWII Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge GO 180, Hg 3rd USA 18 Jul 45.

Mr. Canales retired from Reynolds Metal Company in Gregory, TX in 1981 after 30 years of employment.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Las Rucias, interment will follow at Las Rucias Cemetery in Las Rucias.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Jack W. Mitchell

HARLINGEN, TX — Jack W. Mitchell, 77, of Harlingen entered into rest Thursday at a local hospital.

A Chapel service will be held Saturday, December 1, 2001 at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Home in La Feria at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bill Slaughter of the First Baptist Church of La Feria officiating.

Local services will conclude at the funeral home, interment will be held in Orient, Illinois at Denning Cemetery.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Lois Mitchell of Harlingen; sister, Marie Kuhnke of Illinois; a brother-in-law, Loren and his wife, Tessie of Cleveland and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Leonardo Vasquez Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Leonardo Vasquez, Sr., 98, long time resident of Harlingen past away in Heavenly Peace on November 27, 2001 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas,  Texas.

He was born March 14, 1903. He lived in Dallas for the last five years.

Mr. Vasquez was preceded in death by his wife, Nestora L. Vasquez and 11-month baby daughter, Dorita Vasquez.

He is survived by 7 children, Delia Longoria (widow of Robert Longoria, Sr.) of Harlingen, Daniel Vasquez Sr. (Evita) from Broken Arrow,  Oklahoma, David Vasquez of Dallas, Dorita Molina (Eleo) of Dallas, Delfina Casango (Robert) of Dallas, Diana Orozco (Rey) of Dallas, and Leonardo Vasquez Jr. (Sue) of San Antonio; 19 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and 11 great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 30, 2001 at 7 p.m. Time of burial is pending Saturday December 1, 2001 at Mont Meta Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.
