Ascencion Rodriguez

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Ascencion G. Rodriguez, 75, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas. She moved to Raymondville from York Town in 1940.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday 10 a.m., April 3, 2002 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery. A Rosary will be held Tuesday 7 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel.

She is survived by her husband, Salvador Rodriguez, Sr. of Raymondville; four sons, Seferino (Mary) Rodriguez of Raymondville, Zeca (Gloria) Rodriguez of Anhuac, TX, Salvador, Jr. (Ida) Rodriguez of Dallas and Ivan (Nidin) Rodriguez of Puerto Rico; one daughter, Sylvia (George) Trevino of Raymondville and one sister, Alejandra Garcia of California. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

George Shimek

SANTA ROSA, TX — George Dean Shimek, 80, passed away Friday, March 29, 2002 in Valley Baptist Medical Center. George was born July 1, 1921 to John and Isabel Shimek in Weimar,  Texas. He attended both  Texas A&I University in Kingsville; and the University of  Texas in Austin, receiving a B.S. degree. He was commissioned and served as a Naval Aviator in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He met and married Mary Ellen  White on June 28, 1947 in Austin,  Texas. George was a retired postal carrier with the U.S. Postal Services, he also farmed in the Santa Rosa area. George was a member of the Santa Rosa United Methodist Church, and he was Treasurer for more than 40 years.

George is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen Shimek of Santa Rosa; son, Dean Troy Shimek of Rancho Cucamonga, California; daughters, Cass Ellen (Gary) Kloepping of Fair Oaks Ranch,  Texas, and Laura Frances (John) Robertson of Austin; grandchildren, Zachary Kloepping, Travis Robertson, and Leila Robertson; brother, C.R. "Spud" Shimek of Beaumont,  Texas.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2002 in Santa Rosa United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. with Reverend Jack Bush and Reverend Ardeth Nelson officiating.

As in life, George gave of himself in death. He willed his body to the University of  Texas Medical Branch at Galveston,  Texas. For those desiring to do so memorials may be made to the Santa Rosa United Methodist Church, Rt. 1 Box 99, Santa Rosa,  Texas 78593.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

William Gilliland

SAN BENITO, TX — William Alden "Slew" Gilliland passed away April 1, 2002 at Sunshine Haven in Brownsville. He was born on October 22, 1922 in Raymondville. He attended  Texas A&I College where he was a member of the Javalina Letterman’s Club. He served 2 1/2 years in the U.S. Naval Air Corp. where he captained blimps for 3800 hours during W W II as a Command Pilot. He farmed his entire life in Raymondville until taking a position as the director of ASCS in 1961, retiring after 22 years of service.

He enjoyed his church, playing golf, and was a legend among fishermen.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dolores; his four children, Gary Gilliland (Jinny), Laura Kardow (John), Jan Reves (Randall) and Debby Finch (Buddy). He has been revered and cherished by 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2002 under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home of 701 N. Bowie Street, San Benito.

Because he was lovingly cared for by Sunshine Haven during these last few months, the family requests donations, in lieu of flowers, be sent to Sunshine Haven at P.O. Box 4478, Brownsville,  Texas 78523-4478.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Alicia G. Chapa

MERCEDES — Alicia G. Chapa, 81, died at her residence on Saturday. She is survived by a daughter, Ida Castillo of Mercedes; a foster daughter, Gloria S. Hinojosa of Santa Rosa; a daughter-in-law, Rosario Chapa of Clute,  Texas; two brothers, Rosendo Gonzalez of Mercedes and Esteban Gonzalez of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Emma G. Martinez of Harlingen; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roberto Chapa; her son, Raul Chapa; and two brothers, Antonio and Salvador Gonzalez.

A rosary will be recited Monday night at 7 p.m. at Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home.

Severino Medellin

LA FERIA — Severino Medellin, 84, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 31, 2002, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born in Matehuala, San Luis Potosi on February 11, 1918, to Juan and Geronima Rios Medellin.

Mr. Medellin, known as "Papa" by all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, retired from the Rio Grande Valley Gas Company in 1980 after 35 years of service.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and one brother.

Mr. Medellin is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Eva S. Medellin; two sisters, Juana of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, and Amparo of Saltillo, Coah; mother-in-law, Benita Garza of Harlingen; sister-in-law, Virgina (Leonard) Gonzalez of Harlingen; six daughters, Elida (Mike) Torres of La Feria, Lilia (Roy) Longoria of Harlingen, Irma Quintero of La Feria, Ofelia (Oscar) Ozuna of La Feria, Mary (Arturo) Soto of La Feria, Sally (Tino) Fernandez of La Feria; two sons, Hector Medellin of Harlingen and Juan Ernesto Medellin of La Feria; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, April 1, 2002 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel of Peace in La Feria,  Texas. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday at Primera Iglesia Bautista. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Primera Iglesia Bautista with Rev. Julian Gauna officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Michael Torres, Javier Torres, David Torres, Napolean Ozuan, Raul Hector Longoria, and Joshua Quintero. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Severino Quintero, Michael Longoria, Adriel Ozuan, and Hector Adrian Medellin.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Homes in La Feria,  Texas.

Reyna T. Garza

HARLINGEN — Reyna Trevino Garza, 51, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 28, 2002 at her residence.

She is survived by sons, Benito (Nadia) Cavazos of Rio Hondo, Jose S. Cavazos III and Alfredo Garza of Lozano; daughters Elvira (Jose) Lopez of Rio Hondo and Noralva (Rolando) Guerra of San Benito; six gandchildren, several stepsons, stepdaughters, brothers and sisters. She is preceded in death by her husband Esteban Garza.

Visitation will begin on Sunday, March 31, 2002 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral will be held on Monday, April 1, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at El Buen Samaritano Church. Burial will follow at Rio Hondo City Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

Hector Hernandez

SAN BENITO — Hector Hernandez, 44, entered into rest on Friday, March 29, 2002. Hector was born in Los Fresnos,  Texas on December 15, 1957 to Pedro Hernandez and Rafaela Garcia Hernandez.

He loved his wife and family very much. His son, Hector Antonio, was his pride and joy.

He was employed by the H.E.B. Grocery Chain and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Hector is survived by his wife, Elsa Lambert; son Hector Antonio Hernandez; brothers and sisters, Pedro Hernandez, Eliza Cuna, Eloisa Suarez, Anna Espinoza, Esteban Hernandez, and Evelinda Gonzalez; numerous nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Rafaela Hernandez, and his brother, Ralph Hernandez.

Visitation is at San Benito Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 31, 2002.

Funeral services will be at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 01. Interment will follow at Esparza Cemetery in El Ranchito.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Howard D. James, Sr.

RIO HONDO — Howard David James, Sr. passed away Thursday morning, March 28, 2002 at his home in the River Ranch Resort near Rio Hondo,  Texas. He was born March 20, 1927 on a farm near Dunlap, Iowa. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Anita LaVonne, and a son, Howard David James, Jr.

He is survived by son Bill James and his wife Marcia; their children Keith, Megan, and Molly; by son Donn James and his wife Carolyn; their children Christine and Dylan; and by his life-long partner LaVonne James. Howard completed his education at Woodbine Public School and then began his long career as a farmer.

He was a true steward of the land long before the idea of soil conservation or land management were considered practical.

He loved the land and tended it well. The pride he took in his profession was evident in his "arrow-straight" rows of corn in the field and in the bushels per acre at the harvest.

Howard took the same kind of pride in raising his animals for market. He built a solid reputation for providing high quality beef at the Chicago stockyards.

Buyers representing restaurants in the eastern U.S. would bid on his cattle without seeing them, knowing they were the best. Howard took an active role in his community.

He served on the board of directors of the Farmers’ Cooperative and received an Award of Merit for his many years on the Cedar Valley School Board. He enjoyed bowling for a local team, as well as hunting and fishing both locally and abroad. Howard retired from farming in 1989 and moved to the River Ranch Resort near Rio Hondo,  Texas where he spent his remaining years.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 02, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the River Ranch Resort.

Elvira Conde

MERCEDES — Elvira Conde, 93, passed away Friday morning at her residence in Mercedes.

She is preceded in death by her husband Feliciano Conde and her children Amelia Conde, Feliciano Conde, Jr., Guadalupe Romero, and Maria de la Luz Conde. She is survived by two daughters, Genoveva Fonseca of Mercedes and Eliboria de los Reyes of Brownsville; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Templo del Espirite Santo in Mercedes. Burial will follow at Catholic Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Jose Martinez

HARLINGEN — Jose Martinez, 36, passed away on Friday, March 29 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

He was a life long Harlingen resident and member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

He worked for Long John Silver for 18 years.

He is preceded in death by his father Telesforo Martinez; a brother, Samuel Martinez; nephew Esteban Casas; and grandmother, Juanita Perez.

He is survived by his wife Eva Martinez of Harlingen; children Samantha Martinez and Jose Martinez, Jr., both of Harlingen; mother Isabel Martinez of Harlingen; three sisters, Lupita Martinez, Anita Briones and Pat Ince, all of Harlingen; four brothers, Gerald Dalum, Esteban Briones, Jesus Briones, all of Harlingen, and Arturo Espindola of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Visitation will be held at Mont Meta Funeral Home on Sunday, March 31 from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a recitation of Holy Rosary to be said at 7:00 p.m.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on April 01, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

The funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Gerald Dalum, Eliazar Casas, Martin De Leon, Abel Corpus, Nick Tapia, and Orlando Ruiz.

Homero Soto

SAN BENITO — Homero Soto, 59, entered into rest on Saturday, March 30, 2002. He was born in Rancho Santa Rosa, Tamps., Mexico on July 12, 1942 to Dionicio Soto and Carolina Cantu Soto.

Mr. Soto took a lot of pride in his work as an auto mechanic. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Soto is survived by his wife, Eliza Soto; sons, Juan Carlos (MariCarmen), Juan Dionicio (Martha), Homero Soto, Jr. (Elva), Jose Soto, Ivan Soto, and Omar Soto; 3 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Esperanza Soto DeLaCruz, Consuelo Hernandez, Beltran Soto, Martin Soto, and Saul Soto; numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dionicio and Carolina Soto; brother, Francisco Soto; and sister, Irma Soto. Visitation is at San Benito Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 31, 2002.

Interment will be at Vista Hermosa Cemetery in Tamps., Mexico.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito, TX.
