Northside Chapels, 800 Boston
St. at San Bernardo Ave.
Funeral services will begin at
10:00 a.m. on Friday, December
17, 1999 from the
Hernandez-Lopez and Sons
Northside Chapels. Holy Mass
will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m.
at San Martin de Porres Catholic
Church. Interment will then
follow in the Calvary Catholic
Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the
direction of the Hernandez
Lopez and Sons Northside Chapels,
800 Boston St. at San Bernardo
Ave., Laredo (956) 723-2979.

Carlos Jesus Alvarado
Carlos Jesus Alvarado, 65,
Passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14,
1999 at a local hospital.
God saw you growing tired
when a cure was not to be. So
he closed his arms around you
and whispered, “Come to me”.
You didn’t deserve what you
went through and so he gave
you rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful;
He only takes the best and
when we saw you sleeping so
peaceful, free from pain, we
could not wish you back to suffer
that again.
It broke our heart to lose you,
but you didn’t go alone, for part
of us went with you, the day
God called you home.
He was preceded in death by
his mother, Francisca M. Alvarado
and a son, Jose David Alvarado.
Mr. Alvarado is survived by his
children, Juan Carlos Alvarado,
Virginia (Manuel) Flores, Jesus
Daniel Alvarado, Maria del
Carmen (Fernando) Colunga,
Juan Ramon Alvarado, Fidencia
Ma. Elena Alvarado and Annette
Arlene Alvarado. Also
surviving Mr. Alvarado are 28
grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
A rosary was recited Wednesday,
Dec. 15, 1999 at 7 p.m. at
Joe  Jackson Heights Funeral
Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez.
Visiting hours were held from 4
to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday morning, Dec. 16,
1999 at 8 a.m. from Joe

Loring at Cortez to San Luis
Rey Catholic Church for a Holy
Mass at 8:30 a.m.
Interment will be at the family’s
plot in the Calvary Catholic
Cemetery.

Visitation was from 4 to 9 p.m.
Services were held
W e d n e s d a y ,
Dec. 15, 1999 at 8:30 a.m. from
the funeral home chapel to Holy
Redeemer Catholic Church.
Mass began at 9 a.m.
Interment followed in the Catholic
Cemetery.

Edward “El Mudo” Johnson,
Passed away Sunday, Dec. 12,
1999.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999 at
8:15 a.m. from the Hernandez
Lopez and Sons Northside
Chapels, 800 Boston St. at San
Bernardo Ave. Holy Mass was
celebrated at 8:30 a.m. at San
Luis Rey Catholic Church.
Committal services and interment
with flag presentation
provided by the J.W. Nixon
High School ROTC Cadets
w e r e
held in the Veteran’s Section of
the Laredo City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Edward
 Johnson Jr., Sigifredo
Barrientos, Luis Lopez and
Homar Colchado.
Arrangements were under the
direction of the Hernandez

Esteban Lozano Jr., 62,

away Monday, Dec. 13, 1999 in
Laredo.

Chapel. Visitation was from 4 to
9 p.m.

Dec. 16, 1999 at 8 a.m. from the
funeral home chapel to San
Francisco Javier Catholic
Church. Mass is at 8:30 a.m.
Interment will follow in the
Catholic Cemetery.

Estela R. Mendoza
Estela R. Mendoza, 66, went
to be with the Lord on Monday,
Dec. 13, 1999 in San Antonio,
 Texas.
Mrs. Mendoza was a devoted
Christian, whose faith in our
Lord, Jesus Christ, remained
strong throughout her life.
Estela was a devoted wife,
mother and grandmother. Her
most gratifying moments were
those spent with her grandchildren.
She was a substitute teacher
i n
1970-80 with the Laredo Independent
School District. As a
young girl she belonged to the
Daughters of Mary Catholic organization
at Our Lady of Guadalupe
Church.
She was preceded in death by
her parents, Jose Angel and Aurora
Ramirez; her sister, Maria
Luisa Montoya, and her brothers,
Enrique Ramirez and Miguel
Angel Ramirez.
Mrs. Mendoza is survived by
her husband of 43 years of marriage,
Daniel F. Mendoza; her
children, Leticia (Roy Moreno)
Mendoza, Cindy (John) Gullette,
Daniel (Alicia) Mendoza
Jr., all of Laredo, and Patricia
(Joe) Garcia of Eagle Pass,
 Texas; her brothers, Manuel Ramirez
and Alberto (Emilia) Ramirez;
her sisters, Maria (Raul)
Treviño, Yolanda (Emilio) Alva,
Josefina Ramirez, Irma
Ramirez, all of Laredo, Alicia
Enriquez of San Antonio, Carmen
(Antonio) Santos of St.
Paul, Minn., Rosa (Ernesto)
Treviño of Houston,  Texas and
Dolores (Mario) Luna of Las
Cruces, New Mexico; her
grandchildren, Robert Gray,
Amanda Mendoza, Jessica Gullette,
Tommy (Rocky) Moreno,
Jeremy Gullette, Jennifer Aurora
Moreno, Lela Gullette, Priscilla
Garcia, Eliza Garcia, Melissa
Garcia and Roy Moreno Jr.
She touched our lives in so
many ways and always praised
our positive attributes. Her love
was the kind that will always be
a part of God’s beautiful plan to
mak you feel cherished, special
and loved. Estela’s love and
gentle kindness will be missed
by all who knew her. Thank
you Jesus for letting her brighten
our lives.

Gregoria “Gollita” Benavides,
82, passed away Saturday,
D e c .
11, 1999 at a local hospital. She
was born in Laredo.
Services were held at St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church, Wednesday,
Dec. 15, 1999 at 8:30 a.m.
Interment was in the Catholic
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eduardo
Valadez, Jesus Zamora,

Amelia G. Osornio
“You hear, Oh Lord, the desire
of the afflicedted; you encourage
them, and you listen to
their cry” Psalm 10:17
Amelia G. Osornio went to our
Lord Jesus on Dec. 12, 1999 at
the age of 75. She was born June
19, 1924 in Laredo, TX.
All who knew her were fortunate.
All who truly loved her
were blessed. She is in a wonderful
place now. She will always be
watching over us and
guiding us to our final home
which will one day be with her.
Her presence and example in
our lives will be sorely missed.

beloved husband of 53 years,

TX.; her daughters, Margarita

Barbera of San Antonio, and
Irene Stiles of Grand Prairie,
TX. She is also survived by her
sisters, Anita Garza, Candelaria
(Ubaldo) Granados, Catalina
Alcala, Adelfa (Edmundo)
Duarte of Laredo, TX Amalia
(Hipolito)  Johnson of San Antonio,
TX and Aurora Peralta of
Taft, TX; 11 grandchildren,
eight great-grandchildren, also,
numerous nieces, nephews and
friends. We would like to thank
Dr. Eduardo Miranda and all
the staff at Doctor’s Hospital
for all the attention and support
given to our beloved mother.

Edward “El Mudo” Johnson
Edwared “El Mudo” Johnson,
70, passed away Sunday Dec. 12,
1999 at a local hospital.
Mr.  Johnson was preceded in
death by his father, Edgar William
 Johnson and by his mother, Amelia
Vertiz Johnson, also
by his wife Juanita L. Johnson.
He graduated from St. Edward
Academy. He was a veteran of
the U.S. Army. Also, he was a
member of the Lulac Council
#12, American Legion member
since 1955. He was in the Laredo
Latin-American “Basketball”
International Hall of Fame in
1981, also in the Gateway Softball
League, a coach at San
Agustin 1956, he worked at Laredo
Community College for
many years, also at Boys &
Girls Club at Moctezuma, and
last work place was at H.E.B.
for 11 years.
He is survived by his daughter,
Leticia  Johnson from Laredo;
son, Edward (Janet)  Johnson III
from Dallas, TX.; grandchildren,
Carlos Ruiz III, Gilbert
Johnson, Kassandra Johnson,
Kathy Johnson, Raymond
Casarez, and Brenda Lee Johnson;
also, nieces, nephews, and
other relatives.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday,
Dec. 14, 1999 from 3 to 9
p.m. with a rosary being recited
at 7 p.m. in the Hernandez,
Lopez and Sons Northside
Chapels, 800 Boston St. at San
Bernardo Ave.
Funeral services will begin at
8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec.
