Marion Gilmore

WESLACO, TX — Marion  Jackson Smith Gilmore, 85, passed away at Knapp Medical Center, Tuesday, March 26, 2002.

Marion was born in  Washington, D.C. on May 20, 1916 to James W. and Jessie Hutto Smith.

Marion at a very young age, after the death of her father, along with her mother, two brothers, Paul J. and James (J.W.) moved from Jasper, Alabama to Donna,  Texas to grow up at her grandparents home, M.T. and Annie Hutto. Marion graduated from Donna High School in 1934.

Marion was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Fretwell (Fred) Gilmore.

She is survived by her sons, Jack P. Tate, Weslaco, Paul B. Gilmore (wife Carole), Katy,  Texas and a stepson, Jerry R. Gilmore, Fresno, California; daughter-in-law, Flo Gilmore, Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Modell Snider and Lillian Gilmore of Weslaco, and Mary Ann Smith of Kerrville; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, special thanks to Dora Faye Ligon and very loving care givers Lupita, Polly and Nena.

Marion was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her family very much and was known to her grandchildren as "GG".

After Fred retired in 1978, they moved from Weslaco to Clearlake City and then to Kerrville,  Texas.

Four years ago she moved to Katy,  Texas to be with her granddaughter, Terri, for one year and the past three years has lived with her son in Weslaco.

Visitation hours will be today, Friday, March 29, 2002 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family to receive friends at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 30, 2002 at McCaleb Funeral Home, with Rev. Howard Bloomquist, pastor of the First Christian Church as the officiant.

Burial will follow at the Hutto family plat in Donna Cemetery next to her mother. Her loving family members will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Aurora Sandoval

HARLINGEN, TX — Aurora Castillo Sandoval, 80, was called home to the Lord’s Kingdom March 27, 2002.

She was born to the late Seberina and Santos Castillo on April 12, 1921 in Los Ramones, N.L., Mexico.

Aurora was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed dearly.

She was a very giving person, always giving of herself for the well being of others, she enjoyed gardening and had a love for animals.

She was a strong role model to her children and grandchildren always stressing the importance of an education.

Aurora is preceded in death by her husband, Luis R. Sandoval; one sister, Eva Castillo Rios; and one brother, Natividad Castillo.

John 10:27 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 "And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.

She is survived by her children, Socorro Sandoval of Edinburg, Bertha (Silvestre) Lozano of Combes, Aida (Jesus) Ramirez of San Juan, Rolando (Imelda) Sandoval of Combes, Lauratina (Roy) Ortiz of Combes and Betulia (Rick) Salazar of Edinburg; 17 grandchildren, Yvonne (Javier) Hinojosa, Efrain E. Martinez, Elizabeth Martinez, Yvette Martinez, Elsa (Robert) Longoria, Livia Lozano, Robina Lozano, Mirta (Jesus) Iracheta, Jesus Ramirez, Anthony Sandoval, Rebecca Sandoval, Rene Ortiz, Leanne Ortiz, Michael Ortiz, Arick Ortiz, Aaron Ortiz and Sarah Salazar; 3 great grandchildren, Gabriella Hinojosa, Karina Hinojosa; and Lauren Gladstone; six brothers and sisters, Raul Castillo of L.A., CA, Florinda Lopez of Monterrey, Emma Pedraza of Corpus Christi, Rodolfo Gonzalez of Dimmit, TX, Mirtala Gonzalez and Elida Rodriguez both of Monterrey.

Active pallbearers will be Rolando Sandoval, Efrain Martinez, Jesus Ramirez, Rene Ortiz, Silvestre Lozano, and Rick Salazar.

Chapel service will be held today at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit with Deacon Genaro Ibarra as celebrant.

Interment will follow at Combes Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F Street, Harlingen,  Texas.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and Thank the staff of the Watson Dialysis Center & VBMC Staff and Special Thank You to Juanita Lozano and a special niece, Leticia Rios Aguilar.

Herminia Rivera

SAN BENITO, TX — Herminia (Minnie) Guerrero Rivera, 56, joined the Lord on March 25, 2002 at Brownsville Medical Center. She was a beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister and best friend to her children.

A native of Los Fresnos,  Texas, she lived in San Benito for numerous years. Minnie was an extraordinarily caring, giving and loving person who strongly believed in the Lord. She was a devoted mother and raised her children proudly. Her children, family, and friends will dearly and greatly miss our mom.

She was born to Andres and Sebastiana Guerrero. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cesario (Cesar) Rivera. They were married for 32 years before his death in March 2000. She loved and was extremely proud of her four children who survived her. They are Sonia (Eddie) Macias, Rene Rivera, Doralee (Jaime) Munoz, and J.R. Rivera. She lovingly cared and raised her first granddaughter, Minnie Gisselle Macias. She also greatly loved her second granddaughter, Oneida Macias. Minnie was also expecting her third grandchild.

She is survived by her sisters and brothers, Chelo (Daniel) Casarez of  Whiteface,  Texas, Celia Lopez of Muleshoe,  Texas, Elvira (Willie) Guerra of  Whiteface,  Texas, Ramon (Maria) Guerrero of Harlingen, Juan Rene (Irene) Guerrero of Irving,  Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her brothers and sister, Carlos Guerrero, Guadalupe Guerrero, and Nicha G. Castillo preceded her in death.

Visitation begins Thursday, March 28, 2002 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Thomae Funeral Home. Church services will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday at the chapel on Bowie Street.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 29, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Valley Worship Center in Brownsville,  Texas with Pastor Pete Guzman officiating. Burial will then follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home on Bowie Street in San Benito.

Hortensia Garcia

MERCEDES, TX — Hortensia Garcia, 94, passed away Monday afternoon at her residence in Mercedes.

She is survived by her son, Eloy Garcia of Mercedes; eight grandchildren, Sonia Garcia Rodriguez, Eloy Garcia, Jr., Even Garcia, Selina Garcia Prehn, Linda Escamilla Rodriguez, Yolanda Escamilla Perales, Rosa Maria Escamilla and Cynthia Partide Pizano. Also surviving is her sister, Maria Ramirez of Roma; twenty-one great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

A chapel service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home in Mercedes, burial will follow at Roma City Cemetery in Roma.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

John Garmong

HARLINGEN, TX — John William Garmong of Harlingen,  Texas passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center at 8:59 a.m., March 26, 2002.

He was a loving husband, father and friend. John was born in October 28, 1919, in Newton County Indiana near the small town of Morrocco.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Porter and Alma Garmong of Morrocco; his brother, Lt. Charles Garmong, U.S. Army Airforce; his sons, William Jay Garmong of Houston,  Texas and Robert Charles Garmong of Oceanside, California; his stepson, James Robert Flewelling of Bishop,  Texas; his first wife, Betty Jane Palmer of Brook, Indiana; and their infant daughter, Wilma Allene Garmong; and his second wife, Emily Garmong.

John is survived by the love of his life, Joan Grether Flewelling Garmong, whom he fondly called "Presh". In 1974, they met and married, and she faithfully and lovingly attended him through many illnesses.

Together, they retired in 1992. She was at his bedside when he passed away.

John is also survived by his son, Donald Lee Garmong (Nancy) of Woonsocket, Rhode Island; his stepson, Michael Ray Flewelling (Jan) of Houston,  Texas; his step daughter-in-law, Ginger Flewelling-Leeds of Corpus Christi,  Texas; his brother, Richard Lee Garmong (Pauline) of Morrocco; sister, Grace L. Bovard (James) of Crown Point, Indiana. In addition, John loved his 17 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Most of his many nieces, nephews and cousins still reside in Indiana.

John graduated from Morrocco High School in 1937, and attended Purdue University.

After having his three sons and daughter, John served during World War II from 1944 through 1946 in the U.S. Navy aboard a minesweeper as a radar operator. He then attended St. Joseph’s College in Rensslaer, Indiana, earning his BA in business in 1950.

After working at the Newton County Stone Quarry and grain farming with his brother Dick, John relocated to Harlingen in January 1952 to enjoy the warmer climate. He briefly worked as an accountant with the W.T. Liston Cement Company, and then entered his life’s work field of education. For over 30 years, he taught elementary school in the La Sara and La Feria school districts.

He also assisted hundreds of adults to study for and attain their G.E.D. In addition to his skills as an English as a Second Language instructor, John’s 41 year teaching career included several years as the Educational Diagnostician for the San Benito School District.

Throughout John’s life, he continually enriched his skills, attending Pan American University in Edinburg and earning his Master’s Degree in Education from  Texas A&I University in Kingsville,  Texas.

In addition to his love of teaching, from 1952 until 1979, John was well known throughout South  Texas for his talent as a bass fiddle player with several local music groups. John currently was serving his community on the Appeals Board of the Harlingen Area Teacher’s Credit Union.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge #372 and American Legion Post #146, both of Morrocco; the York Rite Masonic Lodge in Rensslaer; the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #15045, and the Elks Lodge #1889 of Harlingen. He also participated for many years in the Harlingen Civil Air Patrol, the  Texas State Teachers Association, and the  Texas Retired Teachers Association. With his wife, Joan, he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harlingen.

Funeral services are pending under the direction of the Lang Funeral Chapel of Morrocco. John will be laid to rest at Prairie Vine Cemetery in Newton County with a Masonic service conducted by the Morrocco Masonic Lodge and military honors by Morrocco American Legion Post. A memorial service will later be held at the Elks Lodge in Harlingen. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are asked to send a memoriam to the First Presbyterian Church of Harlingen,  Texas.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Marilyn Barron Duncan

SAN BENITO — Marilyn Barron Duncan, 66 passed away at 4 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2002 in Valley Baptist Medical Center. Marilyn was born December 15, 1935 in Brownsville, TX. She has been a resident of San Benito since 1954, coming from Brownsville.

Marilyn was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school and served in many other capacities. She was a member of P.E.O.; past board member at Gladys Porter Zoo; past Dona of the Algodon Club; past member of the local board of American Cancer Society and an Adult Education teacher and volunteer.

She was a graduate of the University of  Texas at Austin, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

Marylyn was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband, Bob Duncan; son, Bob Duncan and wife Patty; daughter, Nancy Yates and husband Mark; mother, Mary Barron; brother, Mike Barron and wife Carol; grandchildren, Tommy Yates, Carter Yates, John Duncan, and Catherine Duncan.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her father, John F. Barron. Visitation hours were held Wednesday, March 27, 2002 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family recieving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, March 28, 2002 at 10 a.m. in All Saints Episcopal Church in San Benito with Father Eulalio Luna officiating. Burial will follow in Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Sam Boswell Sr., James Russell, Geoffry Drake, Wilton Jordan, Dr. Max Marris, and Dr. Roy Beller. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Bruce, Conley Bell, and Verlon Bigham. For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the All Saints Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1948, San Benito, TX. 78586, or Sandi Jo Funk Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2588, Harlingen, TX. 78551.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Eutha Hamilton

HARLINGEN, TX — Eutha Winfrey Hamilton, Mrs. Oscar A., passed away March 26, 2002 at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen,  Texas and had been a resident of Golden Palms Retirement Center for six years. She was 84 years of age, born on May 22, 1917 in Troy,  Texas and was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. O.A. Hamilton.

She had four children, seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Her children are a son, William Nelson and wife, Marilyn; and daughters, Barbara Ann and husband, Peter Blackstock; Mary Catherine and husband, Will McCulloch, and Sally Ann and husband, Mike Nagy. She is also survived by her sister, Wanda Mehlman in Maryland, and brother, Hill Winfrey of Bay City; his wife, Billie Katherine; brother-in-law, Grady Anderson of Georgetown; and numerous nieces and nephews. She had two sisters, Zerline Anderson and Billie Jo Winfrey who preceded her in death.

Eutha graduated from Southwestern University in Georgtown,  Texas with a BA degree and taught school in Hempstead. She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Harlingen and was very active in her church choir. She played the organ, piano and violin. She was a proud P.E.O. sister in the Valley and also enjoyed her art lessons, creating paintings for her children, grandchildren and friends. A memorial service will be held at first Christian Church in Harlingen on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 2 p.m. She is to be buried in Richards,  Texas beside her husband.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Jose F. Martinez

ELSA, TX — Jose F. Martinez, 43, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2002 in Elsa, TX. He was a resident of Elsa and was a veteran in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Tomasa Martinez and 5 stepchildren; his mother, Herlinda of Elsa, TX; his brothers, Rolando, Fausto, Javier, Andres all of Elsa, TX; Roel Martinez of Mission, TX and Guadalupe Martinez of Chicago, IL; his sisters, Elvia Montoya and Eva Salinas of Corpus Christi, TX; Frances Martinez of Houston, TX, Yolanda Garza of Monte Alto, TX, and Sayde Lee Martinez of Elsa, TX.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jose Jesus Martinez.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today, Thursday, March 28, 2002 at Elsa Memorial Chapel with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2002 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Anahuac Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rolando F. Martinez, Fausto F. Martinez, Javier Martinez, Andres F. Martinez, Roel Martinez, and Juan Martinez. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Elsa Memorial Chapel, Elsa, TX.

Dominga O. Martinez

ELSA, TX — Dominga O. Martinez, 82, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Lifecare Hospital in Edinburg.

She was preceded in death by her son, Antonio Olivas (2002).

Survivors include her daughter, Maria Castillo of Brownsville; son, Juan Olivas of Elsa; daughter, Petra Mungia of Mission; 17 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 9 a.m., today, Thursday, March 28, 2002 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be held at Anahuac Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Elsa Memorial Chapel, 201 N. Broadway, Elsa, TX.

Alfredo S. Gonzales

SANTA ROSA, TX — Mr. Alfredo S. Gonzales, 86, of Santa Rosa went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 23, 2002. He was born in Tio Cano,  Texas and has been a lifelong resident of Santa Rosa.

Survivors include his wife, Luz Saldana Gonzales of Santa Rosa; three daughters, Lupe Sanchez (Sinforoso) of Lubbock, Elena Adame (Manuel) of Harlingen, and Vida Gonzales of  Washington; six sons, Alfredo Gonzales, Jr. (Francisca) of Santa Rosa, Alberto Gonzales (Chelo) of Santa Rosa, Roberto Gonzales of Houston, Antonio Gonzales of Santa Rosa, Alfonso Gonzales (Juanita) of Santa Rosa, and Abel Gonzales (Oralia) of Seattle,  Washington; four sisters, Lucia Cano (Victor) of San Antonio, Francis Garza (Abrosio) of Santa Rosa, Amelia Barron (Fernando) of Harlingen, and Maria Cumpian (Frank) of Santa Rosa; 42 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Garza Elizondo Funeral Home Chapel with a Prayer Service to be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Garza Elizondo Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Rio Grande Memorial Park in La Feria.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garza Elizondo Funeral Home of 209 W. Taylor, Harlingen, TX (956) 423-5353.
