Evangelina Aguilar

HARLINGEN, TX — Evangelina M. Aguilar, 67, went home to her Father the Lord on Saturday, March 23, 2002.

She is preceded in death by her son, Rogelio Aguilar; grandson, Albert Aguilar; parents, Rafael and Clara Moreno; and her brother, Isidoro Moreno.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Crisanto Aguilar, Sr.; five daughters and three sons, Irma (Frank) Cruz from Arkansas, Ilda Aguilar from Dade City, Florida, Olga Aguilar, Criselda Aguilar, Susana (Raul) Gonzalez, Felipe (Irma) Aguilar, Jesse (Mary) Aguilar, Crisanto (Raquel) Aguilar, Jr., all living in Harlingen,  Texas; four sisters, Julia Fernandez from Dade City, Florida, Estefana Trevino from Houston,  Texas, Jesusa Martinez, Ida Benavides from Harlingen,  Texas and one brother, Abel Moreno from Oxnard, California. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Roylee Aguilar, Felipe Aguilar, Jr., Jesse Aguilar, Jr., Martin Garcia, Christopher Aguilar, Ray Ortega, Louis Leal, and Crisanto Aguilar, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Benavides, Rudy Benavides, and David Louks.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2002.

Mass will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the burial will follow at Ashland Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

Frances I. Briggs

MERCEDES, TX — Frances I. Briggs, 78, passed away Sunday.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joseph E. Briggs of Mercedes; two sons, Patrick (Monica) Briggs of  White Bear Lake, MN, James (Barbara) Briggs of Shoreview, MN; two daughters, Mary Briggs of Mill Valley, CA, Nancy Briggs of Minneapolis, MN; her brother, Dennis Lager of Columbus, OH; two sisters, Lorraine Napier of Sun City Center, FL, Bernice Bunday of St. Paul, MN; also surviving are two grandchildren, Will Briggs Barnette and Sara Briggs.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at a later date.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Gladys Gordon

ARLINGTON, TX — Gladys Gordon, 83, a homemaker, passed away at an Arlington Medical Center.

Mrs. Gordon was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Leo Gordon; sons, Jay Gordon and wife, Ellen, Leo Dan Gordon and wife, Karen and John Lann Gordon and wife, Mellie; daughter, Bettie  Taylor and husband, Joseph; grandchildren, Leah Claire, Reese Wade, Daniel Kennard and Johnalyn Melanny Gordon, Elizabeth Laura, Katherine Ann and Teresa Natalie Taylor; and sisters, Laura M. Bennett and Bertha Wiesmann.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Burial to follow at 3 p.m. at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Rosary was held 7 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2002 at Arlington Funeral Chapel.

Perfecto Rodriguez

PASADENA, TX — Rev. Perfecto M. Rodriguez, Jr., passed away March 24, 2002.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Maria R. Rodriguez; daughters, Maria Magdalena Rodriguez and Margarita Rodriguez.

He is survived by daughters, Mary Aguilera and Magdalena Perez and husband, Antonio; son, Perfecto R. Rodriguez, III; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Juanita R. Canales and husband, Ezequiel and Ramona Miniel.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito,  Texas.

William Crawford Whaley, Jr.

PORT ISABEL, TX — William Crawford Whaley, Jr., MD, entered into eternal rest on March 24, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

Dr. Whaley was born in Monticello, Arkansas on August 17, 1926. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following the Navy he completed his pre-medical studies at Arkansas A&M College, then graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1949.

After practicing medicine in  Texas, for five years including three years in  Johnson City, he moved to Warren, Arkansas and practiced as a Board Certified Family Practitioner for thirty-one years.

In 1987, Dr. Whaley left Arkansas and moved to Port Isabel,  Texas, and developed a large medical practice as the only physician in the Port Isabel Diagnostic Clinic. He retired from that practice in 1995.

Dr. Whaley also served his community in many ways; including as school board member and president while in Warren, Arkansas and as a member and president of the PI/SPI Rotary Club. He was instrumental in the success of Rotary’s "Shots Across  Texas" Program in Cameron County. He was an active member of the AMA and the Cameron/Willacy Medical Alliance and the First United Methodist Church of Port Isabel.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Patricia Brann Whaley of South Padre Island,  Texas; three children, Ann Whaley Sloss of Port Isabel, Sue Whaley Rubio-Ardila of Los Fresnos,  Texas and James William Whaley of Houston,  Texas; two grandchildren, William Brann Whaley of Houston,  Texas and Alexandra Harper Burban of New York, New York; one sister, Margaret Coulter of Lake Dallas,  Texas; including many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 10 a.m., at the Chapel by the Sea on South Padre Island,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.

Betty Jo Blocksom Rapp

RAYMONDVILLE — Betty Jo Blocksom Rapp, 79, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas.

Betty Jo entered this world on August 30, 1922, the only child of Franklin and Hope Beebe Blocksom in Plainview,  Texas. She attended and graduated from the University of  Texas in Austin where she met and later married Bill Rapp. They settled in Raymondville,  Texas where they raised two sons, Mike (Marilyn) Rapp of Huntsville, Alabama, and Rob (Kaye) of Harlingen,  Texas.

Betty was a schoolteacher in Willacy County for many years and later retired from the Lyford school system. She was very active in American Contract Bridge where she achieved her life masters status.

Betty Rapp will be remembered by family and friends as a gracious lady who held a passion for life. She was fun to be with. She is gone and missed but not forgotten, and will live in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Private graveside services for the family will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 10 a.m. in the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery. John Huegel will be officiating the services. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, friends make a generous donation to your local hospice program or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in your area.

Enriqueta Vallejo

BROWNSVILLE — Enriqueta Vallejo, 88, passed away Saturday March 23, 2002 at her residence. She was born July 15, 1913 to Pasqual and Juanita De Leon in Brownsville,  Texas and was a lifelong resident.

She was a very kind, loving, and generous mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Vallejo was a member of Principe de Paz Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel C. Vallejo, Sr.; two sons, Pablo and Juan Vallejo; a brother; a sister; and four grandchildren.

She is survived by five sons, Jose Angel (Guadalupe) Sierra of Vidor,  Texas, Rev. Manuel (Maria) Vallejo, Jr. of San Antonio,  Texas, Ruben (Socorro) Vallejo of Wauson, Ohio, Santos Vallejo and David (Guadalupe) Vallejo both of Brownsville; six daughters, Victoria V. (Rev. Felix) Cadena of Muleshoe,  Texas, Maria V. Ramirez of Bay City, Michigan, Cruz Vallejo of Brownsville, Francisca V. (Jose) Ramirez of Bay City, Michigan, Ester V. (Geronimo) Vasquez of Corpus Christi,  Texas, and Maria Ignacia V. (Ruben) Morin of Progreso,  Texas; one sister, Trinidad Vasquez of Michigan; 53 grandchildren; 106 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be Monday, March 25, 2002 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Principe de Paz Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Villa Nueva Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Manuel Vallejo III, Manuel Vallejo, Domingo Morin, David Vallejo, Jr., Jose Luis Sierra, and Jorge Vallejo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Joe I. Trevino, Garza Memorial Funeral Home, 1025 E.  Jackson St., Brownsville,  Texas (542-5511)

Charles S. Brock

LOS FRESNOS — Charles S. Brock, 59, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Charles was born on December 5, 1942 in Weslaco, TX to William and Phyllis Brock. He had lived in the Los Fresnos area for many years and was involved in the construction business. Charles was a member of the Church of Christ in Los Fresnos and will be remembered for his many fishing and hunting outings with his sons.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Brock; children, Charles Brock, Jr., Charlene Brock, William Lee Brock, Jackie Ann Brock, Veronica Brock, Dominique Brock, and Phyllis Ruby Brock; sister, Wyetta Cole; brother, Pete Perez Brock; grandaughter, Trianna Brock; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Brock, Jr.

Visitation hours will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2002 at San Benito Funeral Home with a prayer service being held at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ Church in Los Fresnos, 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002 with Pastor Richard Lovell officiating. Burial will follow at Solis Cemetery on Solis Road near La Feria.

All arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Juanita R. Casanova

SAN BENITO — Juanita R. Casanova, 92, passed away at a local hospital on March 23, 2002.

Mrs. Casanova is survived by sons, Remejio (widower – Elvia) Casanova of Navasota, TX, Alfonso (Lupe) Casanova of San Benito; daughters, Cruz (Hilario) Soto of San Benito,  Texas, Rosa ("Cano" Desiderio) Perez of Houston, TX, Maria (Ramiro) Perez of San Benito, TX; 27 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A holy rosary will be recited 7 p.m., Monday March 25, 2002at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Harlingen City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tony Perez, Jose Casanova, Larry Soto, Jr., Juan Ramiro Perez, Jr., Remejio Casanova, Jr., and Roberto Soto.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, San Benito, 956-399-1331

Dorothy A. Hansen

HARLINGEN — Dorothy A. Hansen, 77, passed away on Friday March 22, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Dorothy was born on October 12, 1924 in Rangerville,  Texas to John W. and Esther E. Scogin. She graduated from San Benito High School in 1942 and had been a resident of Harlingen since 1943. Dorothy married Robert M. "Bob" Hansen on November 15, 1944 in Harlingen. Dorothy was a member of Rio Hondo Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Hansen, Sr.; one son, Bobby (Donna) Hansen, Jr. of Carmel, IN; and three daughters, Ruth (Chester) Wrye of Houston, Laura (Jimmie) Lindsay of Houston and Barbara (Jay) Meyers of Shreveport, LA; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Eunice Ritchie of Harlingen and Eula Mayer of Cuero, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; and six sisters.

Visitation hours will be held from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002 with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at the Rio Hondo Baptist Church, 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2002 with the Rev. Gene Horton officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

For those desiring to so, memorials may be made to the Rio Hondo Baptist Church or the American Lung Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Santos Estrada

HARLINGEN — Santos Estrada, born November 2, 1929, at the age of 72 went to join our good Lord Saturday morning, March 23, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Estrada was retired from General Motors. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew Estrada; his parents, Juan and Bruna Estrada; four brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Marie Dolores Estrada; children, Santos Jr. (Minerva) Estrada of Rio Hondo, Eliseo (Christina) Estrada of North Carolina, Nicolas Estrada of Michigan, Eliseo Fr. (Vannie) Estrada, and one very special daughter, Rose Reyes (Larry) all of Bay City, Michigan; two brothers, Ramon Estrada and Esteban Estrada; and numerous grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Santos Estrada III, Nicolas Estrada, Eliseo Estrada, Jr., David Rodriguez, Juan Andres Benavidez, and Juan Benavidez.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 25, 2002 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow to Las Rucias Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F Street Harlingen

Neale Ball

LA FERIA — Neale Ball, 74, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002, after a long illness. His wife and daughter, Susan, were at his side. He was born in San Antonio,  Texas, January 18m 1928. He was a teacher, principal, and administrator, in the La Feria School District for many years. He received his B.S. in Secondary Education at A&I University at Kingsville, and his Master of Education degree at Pan Am University, Edinburg,  Texas. He served 5 years in the Air Force branch of the armed services during the Korean War. Neale moved to La Feria in 1968 after living in Grand Prairie and Desoto. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.R. Ball, and a brother, R. Dale Ball. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of La Feria, where he sang in the sanctuary choir and taught Sunday school. He was a past member of the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs. After retirement in 1990, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and working in his small orchard. Survivors are his wife of 45 years, Grady Jo Ball; son, Larry Ball, Jr.; and close family friend, Dale Anderson of Brighton, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Vaughn of Victoria,  Texas; daughter, Susan Ball of La Feria,  Texas; sister-in-law, Judy Ball Kuesel of Dallas. Numerous nephews, nieces, and many friends.

Pallbearers are Sam Magee, Bill Farris, Kenneth Durham, Jim Paul Gamble, Ralph Brooks, and Don Power. Honorary pallbearers are Reyes Rodriguez, Luis Garza, and Deacons of the First Baptist Church of La Feria. Officiating are Rev. Bill Slaughter and Rev. Jerry Johnson.

Visitation will be held at Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Home of La Feria from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with family to receive friends and relatives from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday March 25, 2002. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of La Feria. Interment will follow at La Feria City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Home of La Feria.
