Petra Martinez

RAYMONDVILLE/TEXAS CITY, TX — Petra Martinez passed from this life on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at the tender age of 97. She was born in Sarita, TX, on November 13, 1905. Her eternal destination "Heaven" to live in the mansion prepared by Jesus, her Lord and Savior. Joining her at her arrival was her husband, Santiago Martinez of 79 years who passed December 2001, her son, Lupito Martinez and her great-great grandson, Salvador Martinez, Jr. What a day of rejoicing this must be for her.

How do you say goodbye to someone you’ve been blessed to have known for so many years. The separation for those of us who reamain will be difficult, but it will be the many memories that have been left with us that will keep us strong in our journey through this life, until we join them. "Ama" as we call her was the most joyful and content grandmother that anyone could have been blessed to have known. Though she was blind most of her life, she never used it as a handicap for sympathy. Never complaining, and always jesting about something. Though she was aged, you would never know this when you visited with her. She would definitely leave a mark in you heart. Not one day would go by that she would share her love for dancing. She would love for us to put music on and though she laid in bed most of her aging years, we knew in her heart she was rejoicing. She had a heart full of joy. How she must be rejoicing now.

Ama was a faithful and loving wife, raising her five children in Raymondville, TX. In 1989 she moved to  Texas City with one of her daughters, Elida and her son-in-law, Mike Anzaldua, who cared for her faithfully until her passing. What a reward they must have for them, the gift of love is priceless. Ama will be greatly missed by her family: two daughters, Elida Anzaldua of  Texas City and Emma Cavazos of Elsa; three sons, David Martinez of Garland, Fabian Martinez of Puyallup, WA, and Jimmy Martinez of  Texas City and a grandson, Salvador Martinez of  Texas City, whom they raised; and a family who deeply loved her, 26 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and 25 great great grandchildren. What a legacy that has been left to us as a family by our grandparents. Ama will always be remembered sitting and twittling her hands and fingers, praying for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. When you asked her what she was doing, she would say, "Praying". She was a great example of the Proverbs 31 woman. Her children would rise up and call her "Blessed".

Visitation will be Friday, February 7, 2003 with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel in Raymondville, TX.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 8, 2003 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville, TX with burial following in the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery next to her beloved husband and son.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home in Raymondville, TX. For further information-phone (956) 689-2151.
