Walter Lee Kirkpatrick

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Walter Lee Kirkpatrick, 60, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003. He was born in Weslaco,  Texas, October 25, 1942.

He began his professional banking career in 1963 at First State Bank & Trust Company of Edinburg,  Texas. In 1970, he and his family moved to Brownsville where he became President of the National Bank of Commerce.

In 1974, he sold his interest in the bank and started an export trading company.

Lee returned to banking as the President and CEO of Brownsville National Bank in 1983.

He remained in that position until that bank’s merger into  Texas State Bank/ Texas Regional Bancshares in 1998.

At the time of his death, Lee was serving as President of  Texas State Bank, Brownsville.

Lee often said that his years in private business made him a better banker because he was familiar with both sides of the desk.

Mr. Kirkpatrick served four terms as a Board Member of the National Bankers Association and in 1995 was awarded the NBA’s Distinguished Service Award for his work with the Association. He also served on the Financial Advisory Committee of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

Mr. Kirkpatrick was a believer in serving his community, acting as director and president of numerous civic and economic organizations. He served eight years on the Public Utilities Board and on three occasions was elected as its Chairman. During this time, he worked with the Lower Rio Grande Valley Water Development Board, addressing the future water needs of the area. He has also been a director of Region M Water Planning Group, having been appointed by the  Texas Water Development Board and was a Director and member of the  Texas Water Foundation.

Lee was a past member of the Vestry of the Church of the Advent Episcopal, serving as senior warden. He also served as a board member of the Episcopal Day School and of the Valley Zoological Society. He was past President of the Brownsville Boys and Girls Club.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, spending hours walking through farm and ranchland absorbing ambience of the brush country. His true joy was showing off this part of South  Texas to his grandchildren and friends.

Lee was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a friend to many people throughout the Valley and Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, H.H. and Genie Kirkpatrick.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Geralyn Swanson Kirkpatrick; his son, Sean of Denton; his daughters, Kristen (Don) Newcomb of Austin and Lynn Kirkpatrick (Jose) Guevara of Brownsville. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Caroline Kirkpatrick of Denton, Paige Newcomb of Austin, Aaron Newcomb of San Antonio, Luis and Brendan Guevara of Miami, FL; his brother, Harry (Becky) Kirkpatrick of Austin and many nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and associates.

Honorary pallbearers are Timothy Williams, Craig Clendenin, John Cowen, Calvin Walker, John Drennan, John Bruciak, Eddie Ostrowski, Robert Vezzetti, Jack Mims, John Young, Dave Gelfer, Marvin Conner, Jimmy Bates, Dan Miller II, Luis Castro, Lou Castro, Eduardo Rodriguez and the  Texas State Bank family.

Services will be held at the Church of the Advent Episcopal, 10 a.m., Saturday, February 8, 2003.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Kirkpatrick’s name to the Church of the Advent Episcopal, Episcopal Day School, or charity of choice.

Agustina Catache

HARLINGEN, TX — Agustina Catache, 75, entered into rest on Wednesday at Retama Manor Nursing Center in Harlingen, TX.

Mrs. Catache was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and was preceded in death by her husband Pedro Catache; sons, Samuel and Gregorio Catache.

She is survived by her daughters, Gloria (Ruben) Gonzalez, Graciela (Moises, Jr.) Huerta, and Raquel Ochoa; sons, Jose (Maria) Catache, Javier (Juanita) Catache, Rodrigo Catache, Guadalupe (Alicia) Catache and Pedro (Gloria) Catache, Jr. all of Harlingen, TX. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Geronimo Lopez of Harlingen, TX, Alberto Lopez of MX; sisters, Angelita Lopez of MX, Margarita Barron of Harlingen, TX, Enriqueta Lopez of MX and Petra Valadez of MX.

Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Friday, February 7, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Alphonsus McHugh as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery in Harlingen, TX.

Pallbearers will be Jose Catache, Javier Catache, Rodrigo Catache, Guadalupe Catache, Pedro Catache, Jr. and Nicholas Catache.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Trinidad V. Garcia

HARLINGEN, TX — Trinidad Vega Garcia, 78, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at his residence. Trinidad was born on October 10, 1924 in Alamo,  Texas to Trinidad R. and Juanita V. Garcia.

Trinidad was a retired auto mechanic, having owned/operated his own repair shop; he also was a veteran in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church, American Legion Post #205 and V.F.W. Post #2410.

Trinidad is survived by his sons, Eddy Garcia of Midlothian, TX, Trinidad Garcia, Jr., of Harlingen, Jorge Garcia of Azoris, Portugal, and Jaime Garcia of Harlingen; daughters, Janie Garcia Welles of Oceanside, CA, Diana Perez of Baytown, TX and Veronica Garcia Sotelo of Harlingen; sister, Maria Garcia Sauceda of Fresno, CA; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brother, and three sisters.

Visitation hours will be held Thursday, February 6, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be said at 7 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral mass will be held Friday, February 7, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Father Matthias Shanley officiating. Entombment will follow in Mont Meta Memorial Park. Full military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #205 and V.F.W. Post #2410.

Pallbearers will be Eddy Garcia, Trinidad Garcia Jr., Jorge Garcia, Jaime Garcia, Juan Perez, and Jorge Alcozer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Miriam H. Etnyre

HARLINGEN, TX — Miriam Hoopes Etnyre, 87, formerly of Oregon, IL passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 14, 2003, in Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas. She was born September 13, 1915, in Rochelle, IL, the daughter of John William and Belle Emerson Hoopes.

She attended grade school in Chana and graduated in 1933 from Rochelle Township High School, where she lettered all four years in track and field. After graduating from Scoville School of Business in Sterling, she worked as a legal secretary for law firms in Rockford and Chicago; for more than four years she was private secretary to Frank O. Lowden, former Illinois governor and U.S. congressman.

Miriam married George M. Etnyre Jr. on December 30, 1941, in San Francisco. They were married 61 years in Rockvale Township. In 1977 they began spending several months a year in Harlingen, where they recently made their home.

Miriam was a former member of Byron Women’s Club, New Century Club of Oregon and Oregon VFW Auxiliary. She had enjoyed playing bridge for many decades with friends in Byron. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oregon since 1943 and an associate member of Grace Lutheran Church in Harlingen for 25 years. Miriam loved music and sang in St. Paul’s choir for more than 40 years and at Grace Lutheran for more than 15. She taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent at St. Paul and actively participated in women’s groups at St. Paul and Grace Lutheran until her health no longer permitted.

Survivors include husband, George of Harlingen; son, William S. Etnyre of Seattle, WA; daughters, Dr. Patricia (Ronald) Etnyre-Zacher of Harlingen and Susan (Gary) Davis of Oregon; grandchildren, Kathryn Ferb of Phoenix, AZ, Melissa Ferb of Chicago, Nathaniel (Justine) Davis of Oregon, and Nicholas Davis of Oakland, CA; step-grandchildren, Scott, Eric and Kevin Zacher; great-grandchildren, Julie Marie Davis and Jacob Scott Davis; and nephew, John (Jan) Hoopes of Janesville, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and a sister.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Grace Lutheran Church in Harlingen with the Reverend Robert E. Slade officiating. Memorial funds established for Grace Lutheran Church.

Pablo Quintanilla Beltran

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Pablo Quintanilla Beltran, 78, entered into eternal rest with the Lord, Tuesday evening, February 4, 2003 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville,  Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Refugio Quintanilla and Felipa Beltran; two sons, Pablo Jimenez and Raymundo Jimenez and one brother, Pedro Flores.

Mr. Quintanilla is survived by his loving children, Roberto Jimenez of Brownsville, Rosa Pena of Mercedes, Refugio Jimenez of Progreso, Ramona Juarez of Mercedes, Raul Quintanilla of Brownsville, Socorro Quintanilla of Valle Hermoso Tamps., MX, Maricela Quintanilla of Houston and Norma Alicia Quintanilla of Florida; his brothers and sisters, Isidro Flores Beltran, Jesus Flores, Cruz Flores and Luz Flores all of California and Carolina Flores of Anahuae, Tamps., MX and Angelina Flores of San Apolinia Tamps., MX.

Visitation will be held today, Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Guerra Funeral Home "Chapel of the Holy Spirit" from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, February 7, 2003 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 2255 Southmost Rd. at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Brownsville, 3955 Coffee Port Rd. 9956) 544-1171.

Edward Weber

HARLINGEN, TX — Edward Leroy Weber was born on November 10, 1929 and entered into eternal rest on February 4th, 2003.

Edward was born and raised in Rangerville. The last nine years he resided in Harlingen living at Cottonwood Creek. He was the son of Ernest and Emma Hamm Weber.

He is survived by brothers, Donald Weber and wife, Allene of Fresno, CA, Lawrence Weber and wife, Shirley; sisters, Betty Weber Schindler, Dorothy Weber Kloepping and husband, Robert, Elizabeth Weber Mehler of Waco and thirteen nephews and nieces and one Aunt, Emma  Johnson of Augusta, KS.

He faithfully served the Lord as Sunday School Teacher, Youth Group Director and Financial Secretary at St. John Lutheran Church, San Benito,  Texas. He retired from Continental Eagle Corporation after twenty five years of service.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Ernest Weber; sister, Lucille, brother, Clarence and nephew, Terry Weber Crockett.

Pallbearers will be Charles Minor, Sam Marrow, Calvin Gieger, Tim Weber, Robert Anderson, and Earl Weber. Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Buchan.

Visitation will be held today, Thursday at the Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito, with family members present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The funeral service will be held Friday, February 7, 2003 at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in San Benito with the Reverend Marcus Mueller officiating.

Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Mercedes.

In lieu of flowers it is the family’s request that memorials be given to St. John Lutheran Church Building Fund and to the Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito,  Texas.

RoseMary West

HARLINGEN, TX — RoseMary West went to be with her Lord and join her beloved husband, Emerson C. West on January 30, 2003.

She left this life as she lived it, with strength, love, dignity and faith. RoseMary was born in Syracuse, KS, December 18, 1916, daughter of Ivan Q Williams and Mary Lillie Williams Davis.

RoseMary always saw life as a challenge, from looking after her beloved sisters, Nellie and Bonnie, to "blazing the trail" as a successful business woman in a man’s world."

RoseMary was raised in Dodge City, KS, attended Dodge City Jr. College and Kansas University.

Married April 11, 1936, to Emerson C. West (Deceased May 13, 1992) "56 golden years with many challenges and goals for our lives, we were successful through Love, Faith, Hard Work, Play & Good Sense of Humors.

We were blessed with a lovely family, relatives & friends. What more could you ask for in life?" RoseMary and Emerson moved to Harlingen, TX in 1979.

Survivors include Daughter, Linda Koch; Son-in-law, H.R. "Bud" Koch, Arroyo City, TX; Son, Emerson E. West, Jr., Hotchkiss, CO; Grandchildren Kenda Sanders and Derek Koch; Sister, Bonnie Fraser; Nephews, Knute and Scott Fraser, James Creevey, Bill and Dennis Pettigrew and many faithful friends.

Mrs. West’s family would like to thank all the doctors and nursing staff at Valley Baptist Hospital, especially Drs. Ross, Lightner, Klein and Condit for their professional care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shrine Crippled Children’s Home, Eastern Star or a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of RoseMary’s life was held 11 a.m. at Swaim Funeral Home, in Dodge City, KS, Monday, February 3rd, 2003.

Burial followed at Maple Grove Cemetery.
