Maria A. Cano

HARLINGEN — Maria Antonia Benavides Cano went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 1, 2003 at the age of 88. She was born on March 26, 1914 to Ramiro and Delfina Gonzales Benavides in Cerralvo, N.L., Mexico. She married Genaro Cano, Jr. on December 31, 1933 in Cerralvo. She was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She lived life to the fullest always enjoying the time she spent with her family. She was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Viola Cano Trevino, an infant son. Jose Cano, two brothers, Ramiro Benavides and Baltazar Benavides, one sister, Minerva Barron, and two son-in-laws, Richard Davila and Ramon Davila.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Genaro Cano, Jr., her sons Felix (Haydee) Cano, Noe (Lionor) Cano, Genaro (Maricela) Cano III, and Josue (Enedelia) Cano all of Harlingen, TX; a son-in-law George Trevino of Harlingen, TX; her daughters Noelia Davila and Maria Antonia (Arturo) Juares, all of New Braunfels, TX, and Eloina Davila of Lubbock, TX; 25 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-granddaughters; sisters-in-law Rosita Cano, Ninfa Cano and Ninfa Salinas all of Harlingen, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today (Sunday) from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace, with the family present from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 3, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace and then from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Primera Iglesia Bautista with the funeral service to begin at 3 p.m. with Pastor Robert Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito, TX.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, George Trevino, Jr., Noe Cano, Jr., Mike Torres, David Cano, Raymond Davila, Jr., Dr. Felix Cano, Jr., Rocky Davila, Richard Davila and Josue Cano, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Lori and Dina Cano.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice, Primera Iglesia Bautista, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen, TX.

Carolyn Fiero

RAYMONDVILLE — Carolyn Fiero, 65, passed away Friday, January 31, 2003 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Raymondville, TX. She was born March 7, 1937 in Shreveport, LA to Oren Wailon and Francis (Dodd) Boddie. She was a member of ATPE, United Methodist Women Club and Church choir.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Fiero of Raymondville; two sons, Richard Glen Fiero of Columbus, Ohio and Greg (Rocki) Fiero of Dallas; two daughters, Janet Fiero of Alice, TX and Susan (Eddie) Longoria of Victoria. One granddaughter, Kelli Longoria; three grandsons Matthew Longoria of Victoria, James (Veronica) Fiero and Lee (Chelsea) Waller all of Dallas; one great-grandson, Gage Waller of Dallas; one sister Mary (Claude) Glasgow of La Feria.

Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. on Monday, February 3, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church of Raymondville.

Cremation arrangements entrusted to the care of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Dominga Quesada Pinon

SAN BENITO — Dominga Quesada Pinon, 65, entered into rest on Friday, January 31, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born in San Benito on February 21, 1937. She was the daughter of the late Jose and Margarita Quesada and was a member of Iglesia Cristiana Emmanuel for more than 20 years.

She is survived by her husband Ramon Pinon Sr.; children Jose Manuel Pinon, Rosalinda P. Peralez, Ramon Pinon, Jr., Rolando Pinon, Mario Alberto Pinon, Leticia P. Pereira, Maria Isabel P. Mendiola, Joel Pinon, Andy Pinon, Marisela P. Gonzalez, Lourdes Pinon, David Pinon, Nancy P. Garza, and Mark Anthony Pinon; 24 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. She is also survived by brothers and sisters Gilberto Quesada. Juan Quesada, Manuela Medina, Lupe Quesada, Antonia Pesina, and Yolanda Lopez.

Visitation was held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at San Benito Funeral Home from 1 – 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation on Sunday, February 2, 2003 will be from 1 – 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m.

Services will be held on Monday, February 3, 2003 at Iglesia Cristiana Emmanuel, 335 Corral in San Benito with Rev. Joel Gonzalez officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Jose Manuel Pinon, Ramon Pinon Jr., Mario Alberto Pinon, Joel Pinon, Andy Pinon, David Pinon, Mark Anthony Pinon, and Juan Quesada.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home in San Benito.

Estela G. Ortiz

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Estela G. Ortiz, 90, a beautiful, inspiring and loving mother, of Brownsville entered into eternal rest Friday, January 31, 2003 at Valley Regional Medical Center.

Estela was born on May 12, 1912, in Las Yescas,  Texas to Francisco Gonzalez and Dolores Ramirez Gonzalez. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she was involved with the Spanish choir and prayer groups for 25 years. She enjoyed reading the Bible, praying continuously for the safety of her family, others and praying for the ill.

She is survived by her children, Eusebio E. Ortiz, Claudio J. Ortiz Jr. and Noe Nilo Ortiz; her sisters, Mariana Lopez and Adela Trejo; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, February 2, 2003 at Darling-Mouser with a holy rosary recited at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s.

Mass of Resurrection will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, February 3, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

RoseMary West

HARLINGEN, TX — RoseMary West went to be with her Lord and join her beloved husband, Emerson C. West on January 30, 2003.

She left this life as she lived it, with strength, love, dignity and faith. RoseMary was born in Syracuse, KS, December 18, 1916, daughter of Ivan Q Williams and Mary Lillie Williams Davis.

RoseMary always saw life as a challenge, from looking after her beloved sisters, Nellie and Bonnie, to "blazing the trail" as a successful business woman in a man’s world."

RoseMary was raised in Dodge City, KS, attended Dodge City Jr. College and Kansas University.

Married April 11, 1936, to Emerson C. West (Deceased May 13, 1992) "56 golden years with many challenges and goals for our lives, we were successful through Love, Faith, Hard Work, Play & Good Sense of Humors.

We were blessed with a lovely family, relatives & friends. What more could you ask for in life?" RoseMary and Emerson moved to Harlingen, TX in 1979.

Survivors include Daughter, Linda Koch; Son-in-law, H.R. "Bud" Koch, Arroyo City, TX; Son, Emerson E. West, Jr., Hotchkiss, CO; Grandchildren Kenda Sanders and Derek Koch; Sister, Bonnie Fraser; Nephews, Knute and Scott Fraser, James Creevey, Bill and Dennis Pettigrew and many faithful friends.

Mrs. West’s family would like to thank all the doctors and nursing staff at Valley Baptist Hospital, especially Drs. Ross, Lightner, Klein and Condit for their professional care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shrine Crippled Children’s Home, Eastern Star or a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of RoseMary’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, KS, Monday February 3rd, 2003. Burial following at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Amelia Cantu

HARLINGEN — Amelia Ruiz Cantu born in Kennedy,  Texas on October 7, 1912 went to eternal rest on Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Amelia retired after 30 years with Cameron County Tax Office in Harlingen. She was very active with her church of Immaculate Heart of Mary; where she was a member of the Altar Society. (Vela Perpetua), Guadalupanas Sacred Heart Association was also a Lector. She was a past secretary for Woodmen of the World Insurance local chapter.

Surviving her is a daughter Lucila Cantu and her son Jose Luis Cantu and daughter-in-law Elvira M. Cantu all of Harlingen. Also surviving her are her 3 grandchildren; Jose L. Cantu (Norma) of Federal Way, WA., Jaime L. Cantu (Rosie) of Brownsville, and Melba B. Cantu of Harlingen. Three great-grandchildren also survive her; Joseph Christopher Cantu of Federal Way, WA., Jacob L. and Amelia Rae Cantu of Brownsville, one brother Fidencio Ruiz of Harlingen, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, April 7, 2003 from 10am until 9pm with a rosary to be prayed at 7pm at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 9:30am for a 10am Mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church; interment will follow at Mont Meta Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Cantu, Jimi Cantu, Jacob Cantu, Joey Cantu, Rodolfito Gonzales, and Dickie Loya.

Honorary pallbearers will be Melba B. Cantu, Amelia Rae Cantu, Joseph Christopher Cantu, Enrique Gonzalez, Raul Cantu, Jr., Jimmy Cantu, and Joe Davila, Jr.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

Vicenta Castillo

MERCEDES — Vicenta Castillo 95, of Mercedes entered into rest Saturday, April 5, 2003. She is preceded in death by her husband; Jose Castillo and a son; Antonio Castillo. She is survived by her loving children; Abram Castillo, Rosa C. Luna, Jose Castillo, Jr., 30 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be today (Monday) from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and a rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2003 departing the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 1:30 for a 2:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and interment will follow at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rolando Luna, Abel Luna, Abel Luna, Rey Garza, Jr., J.R. Luna, J.J. Luna, Gerald Luna and Reymundo Castillo.

Lois Crofford

HOUSTON — Lois Janet Crofford, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston,  Texas. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Wiegand of Santa Rosa. Lois was born January 29, 1938 and was a graduate of Santa Rosa High School where she participated in many activities.

She married John J. Crofford on June 17, 1967, and they soon moved to Houston where they have resided for 35 years. Lois was employed by Commercial Credit for 25 years.

Lois is survived by her husband, John J. Crofford; sisters, Tivila Wallace (Jack) of Dallas, Lela and Verdelle Wiegand of Santa Rosa; brothers, Roe Wiegand of Ft. Worth, Lynn Wiegand of Fairfield, PA, and Craig Wiegand (Marguerite) of Weslaco; six nieces and five nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2003 with the Rev. Wayne Peck officiating. Burial will follow at the La Feria Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Don Moskal, Charles Wadkins, Ed Ostrowski, Alan Johnson, Ed E. Ostrowski, and Craig Wiegand.

Eugenio "Gene" Nava Mendoza

WESLACO — Eugenio "Gene" Nava Mendoza, 77, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

He was born on November 15, 1925, in Donna, to Telesforo and Inez Mendoza. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eulalio N. Mendoza.

He grew up in East Donna and attended Donna Schools, leaving high school to volunteer to serve with the U. S. Navy for the duration of World War II.

Upon honorable discharge, he resumed and completed his high school studies and attended Durham Business College in Harlingen. He was employed at B.D. Holt Caterpillar Corporation at the Port of Brownsville; Pharr Truck Sales and Weslaco ISD.

Gene was a devout Catholic with membership in Our Lady of Guadalupe, Brownsville; and St. Joan of Arc, Weslaco. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Cursillo Movement De Colores and Catholic War Veterans Post 770.

He lived life to its fullest and leaves many loving and humorous memories to his family, compadres, and friends throughout the Rio Grande Valley who will forever hold a special place in their hearts for Gene.

He is survived by his best friend and wife of 51 years, Cristela Hernandez Mendoza of Weslaco; his only daughter, Irma Diana Mendoza (Ron Rene) Arce; his only granddaughter, Monica Renee Arce of Edinburg; brothers, Julian (Lydia) Mendoza of Weslaco, Luis (Delia) Mendoza of San Juan; sisters, Rosa M. Reyna ,Lina Mendoza of Weslaco, Angie (Eloy) Martinez of Houston; sister in law, Lydia Guerra Mendoza of Donna; numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation and viewing will be at Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco on Monday, April 7th, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8th, 2003 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Weslaco.

Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco with full military Honors.

Pallbearers for Mr. Mendoza will be members of the immediate family. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Weslaco Catholic War Veterans Post 770.

The family wishes to express sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Elvin Garcia, all staff at Valley Grande Manor in Weslaco and nursing staff on the 4th floor north, Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Era DeShazo Vinger

HARLINGEN — Era DeShazo Vinger, 87, passed away Friday, April 4, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas.

Era was born June 5, 1915 in Roscoe,  Texas, to Daniel and Zora DeShazo. Era moved to Alamo, TX, with her family in 1926. She made the Rio Grande Valley her home for the next 76 years.

Era and her late husband, Carlton G. Vinger were the founders of Valley Traveland, Inc. of Harlingen. Era and Carlton were childhood sweethearts, graduated from PSJA High School together in 1935 and were married on May 11, 1936 in Weslaco, TX. They were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen.

Era is survived by her loving sons, Jim (Lynda) Vinger of Harlingen, Jerry (Drucilla) Vinger and Jackie (Kathleen) Vinger of McAllen; grandchildren, Tom (Eric) Vinger, Michele (Steve) Talanco, Paul Vinger, Christopher Vinger, Karen (Ian) Naismith, Melissa Vinger, Laura (Scott) Wheeler, and Meredith (Jack) Roach; great-grandchildren, Ashley Vinger, Alina Naismith, Anders Naismith, Stefani Talanco, Abigail and Charlotte Wheeler; two sisters, Ruth Gray of Mission and Ina Mae Collins of Concan, TX.

Era was preceded in death by three sisters, Lassie Anderson, Lucille Eickhoff, and Marie Killingsworth; four brothers, Howard DeShazo, Tom DeShazo, Daniel (Buddy) DeShazo, and LeRoy DeShazo; and her parents, Daniel Wiley and Zora DeShazo.

Visitation hours will be Tuesday, April 8, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family receiving family and friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jarrell Sharp officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Those desiring to do so may make memorial donations to the charity of choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
