Wilson G. Palmer

HARLINGEN — Wilson G. Palmer, born 22 August, 1918 in Atkins, Arkansas passed away Friday, April 4, 2003 at his home in Palm Valley.

Surviving Wilson is his devoted wife, Anita, his four children, Norma (John) Hesterman of Melbourne, FL, Butch (Skippy) Palmer of Harlingen, Mike (Delores) Palmer of Hypoluxo, FL, and Gail (Henry) Willms of Harlingen. There are eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his first wife, Nadine.

While working for the Corp of Engineers in 1941 at the Harlingen Air Force Base, he met Hill Cocke, who was starting a new ready mix business. Hill hired Wilson and in 1945 became a partner in the business expanding plants to McAllen, Weslaco, Brownsville, Raymondville, and Port Isabel. Later a concrete pipe and steel division were added because of the demand in the valley. In 1964 the business was charted as Valley Ready Mix, Inc. and Wilson was Vice-President in charge of sales. Valley Ready Mix, Inc. became Varmicon in 1977 and Wilson became Vice-chairman of the Board and retired May 31, 1982. He has been President and Member of the Board of  Texas Ready Mix Concrete Association.

Wilson was always involved in his community, such as: Harlingen City Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tem 1953/54; served on the U. S. Draft Board 1968-73; Vice-President and member of the Board of Directors of Harlingen Chamber of Commerce; State Director of Junior Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors of Valley Chamber of Commerce; Past President of the 20/30 Club; Rio Grande Valley Shriners Club; Alzafar Temple in San Antonio; Al Amin Temple in Corpus Christi; Rotary; Campaign chairman for the United Way; Board of Director of Harlingen Country Club and Charter Member; Board of Director of Life Begins at 40; Silver Circle Member;  Texas Senior Golf Association; NAHA Golf Association; First Baptist Church, a charter member of Elks Lodge 1889 since 1953; Past President of Rio Grande Valley Golfers Association-1981; and a 33 nd degree Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen with Pastor Don Higginbottham.

The family request in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rio Grande Valley Shriners Club, P. O. Box 1190, Harlingen, TX. 78551-1190 (designate Crippled Children’s Fund or Transportation Fund). Arrangements are under the care of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Parthenia Lee Archer

HARLINGEN — Parthenia Lee Archer passed into eternal life on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

She was born on November 9, 1920 in Cuero, TX to Olga and Edith Archer. She completed the required curriculum at Booker T.  Washington School in Harlingen from grade school to eighth grade.

She graduated from high school in Cuero, TX and from St. Phillips Junior College in San Antonio, TX. Ms. Archer earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Tillotson College in Austin, TX. She earned a master’s in education from  Texas Southern University in Houston, TX. She earned the second master’s in education at  Texas A & I University in Kingsville, TX.

She also earned certification in education after extensive studies at the University of  Texas in Austin, TX.

Ms. Archer began her teaching career in Mission, TX, in 1943 where she taught for four years.

She taught in Weslaco at the Beatrice Allen Elementary School and after integration taught regular and special education classes at elementary schools, Roosevelt, Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. She retired after teaching in the Weslaco School District for thirty-five years and then taught at the private school All Faith Christian Academy in Harlingen, TX, for three years.

Ms. Archer was a member of Calvary Chapel in Harlingen; Retired Teachers Assoc.; Rio Grande Valley N.A.A.C.P. Branch 6324; Gamma Delta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International and a longtime member of Rio Hondo Baptist Church. Ms. Archer is preceded in death by her parents and sisters Henrietta Williams, Bernice Barker and Corine Archer.

As she departed this life, she leaves to witness her journey nephews, Allen D. Barker of Houston, TX, Carl G. Barker of Dallas, TX, Bruce R. Barker of Harlingen, TX, Thomas K. Barker of Florida; niece, Edith Rochelle Davis and husband Frank of Carrollton, TX; great-nephew, Carl G. Barker, Jr.; great-nieces, Tiffany M. Davis and Chessna R. Davis; god-daughter, Paulette and her husband Steve Szymoniak and godchildren; Queen Jeneve and Steven Lloyd Szymoniak all from Harlingen, and a host of other loving family, extended family and many friends who will dearly miss her.

Visitation will be Monday, April 7, 2003, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home. Officiating will be Dr. Bishop Pratt Tate, Jr. of Faith, Hope and Charity, Inc. of Gainsville, Florida. Interment will be held Wednesday with graveside services to be held at the Hillside Cemetery in Cuero, TX.

Virginia June Roesler

HARLINGEN — Virginia June Roesler, 75, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2003 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen. Virginia was born in Baileyville, IL on June 21, 1927 to Harry and Nettie Mae Fulton. She had been a resident of Harlingen for the past 27 years moving here from Freeport, IL.

She is survived by her son, R.C. Roesler of Bristol, WI; brother, William W. Wolfe, of Batavia, IL; sister Verla Law of Freeport, IL and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin Roesler in 2000.

No local services will be held. As per Virginia’s wishes her body has been donated to Medical Science.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Casimiro T. Hernandez

HARLINGEN — Casimiro T. Hernandez, 94, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2003 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen.

He was born on March 4, 1909 in Rio Rico, Tamps. Mexico. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Harlingen, serving Jehovah for 62 years as an Elder.

He was a retired agriculture worker.

Mr. Hernandez is survived by his grandchildren Lisa Hernandez, Hector Hernandez, Janie Hernandez, Rolando Hernandez, Sonya Hernandez and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel. Javier Ledesma will be the speaker.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Juan Moises Lara

SANTA ROSA — Juan Moises Lara, 43, entered the Lord’s Kingdom on Saturday, April 5, 2003 due to a sudden illness.

He was born March 14, 1940 at Nuevo Progreso, Mexico to Moises and Angelina Coronado. He was a resident of Santa Rosa for the past 9 years.

Survivors include his wife Margarita G. Lara and 1 daughter Sanya Lara both of Santa Rosa; mother Angelina Coronado of Nuevo Progreso, Mexico; 9 brothers Salvador Lara of Santa Rosa, Pedro Lara of La Feria, Augustin Lara of San Juan, Rogelio Lara of La Feria, Blas Lara of Mercedes, Arturo Lara of Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, Rodolfo Lara of Monte Alto, Ramon Lara of Weslaco and Roberto Lara of Nuevo Progreso, Mexico; 3 sisters Maria Elena Martinez of La Feria, Rosa Puentes of Santa Rosa and Estela Silva of San Juan. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Jaime Lara, Raul Lara, Lupe Espinoza, Luis Espinoza, Pedro Lara and Julio Lara. Funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 3 p.m. with Fr. Plutarco Velangttoy as celebrant. Interment will follow at Santo Nombre Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapels, 1217 South F Street, Harlingen, TX 78550.

Amelia Ruiz Cantu

HARLINGEN — Amelia Ruiz Cantu, 90, entered into rest on April 5, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas.

Visitation will be held today, April 6, 2003 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Monday April 7, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.

The rosary will be prayed both evenings at 7 p.m. at Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Antonia S. Abrego

SAN BENITO, TX — Antonia S. Abrego, 85, entered the Lord’s Kingdom on April 4, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born on July 22, 1917 in San Benito, Tx.

She was married for 66 years to Pompeyo B. Abrego who preceded her in death on December 30, 2000.

They were both long life residents of San Benito and were retirees of S.B.I.S.D.

Antonia S. Abrego is survived by her loving children: Jesus (Lupita), Eloy (Martha), Reymundo (Otilia), Henry (Elisa), Cristobal (Odell), and Diana Abrego.

She had 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are: Evanjelina Galvan, Ludivina McDonald, Alicia Tamez, Apolinar Saldivar, and Samuel Garcia.

She was also preceded in death by numerous siblings.

Funeral services for Mrs. Abrego will be officiated on Monday, April 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito.

There will be a Rosary recited at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 7 p.m.

Visitation will be at the Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito on Saturday, April 5, 2003 from 3 to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito, TX.

Elena Garcia

HARLINGEN, TX — Elena Garcia, age 56, entered the Lords Kingdom Friday, April 4, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.

Survivors include her parents, Trinidad and Margarita Garcia of Harlingen; 10 sisters and 5 brothers.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 5, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Private burial will follow at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F. Street, Harlingen.

Audrey D. Heyse

ARROYO CITY, TX — Audrey Diane Heyse, 71, passed away Monday, March 24, 2003 at a local nursing center in Harlingen.

Audrey was born on April 24, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to Clarence and Adelaide Hamilin.

She moved to the Valley in 1977, coming from Detroit, Michigan.

Audrey along with her husband Donald, were owners of the Wharf Restaurant in Arroyo City from August of 1979 until it’s closing in May of 2000.

Audrey is survived by her sister, Noreen Barsh of San Antonio, TX; her daughters, Andrea McClintock of Amarillo, TX, and Donna Skipworth of Bothell, WA; her son, Christopher Heyse of Los Fresnos, TX; her grandchildren, Jason McClintock of Houston, TX, Laura Skipworth of Bothell, WA, and Skylar Heyse of Los Fresnos, TX.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 5:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel with Father Louie Brum officiating.

For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, 902 Morgan Blvd. Suite #2, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Harry Henry Rabe

LA FERIA, TX — Harry Henry Rabe passed away late Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in La Feria. He was born Sept. 13, 1905, at Berclair, Goliad Co.

Mr. Rabe moved to the Rio Grande Valley in the mid-1920s to help his brother, Walter, in the produce and farming business they established near La Blanca in Hidalgo County. He also worked for the Donna Irrigation District. He moved to Medina Co. in 1949 where he bought his farm and continued farming until he retired around 1981. In 1953, he became a Medina County deputy sheriff, was elected constable in 1969 and also served as justice of the peace at Devine for several years. He was often called a "peace officer" rather than a "police officer" because of his skillful arbitration of disputes. In 1985, his 80th birthday, the citizens of Natalia celebrated "Harry Rabe Day" and honored him for many years of giving of himself without expecting anything in return. Many of his Scouts, who went on to positions of influence in the state, speak fondly of his positive influence. He moved to La Feria in 1999 to be near family.

Surviving are his brother, Carl Ellis Rabe of San Antonio; and sister, Clara Josephine Blinka of Azle; numerous nieces and nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews; cousin, sister, Elizabeth Riebschlaiger; sister-in-law, Mary Effie Shows Rabe; and a wide circle of friends.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Sandi Jo Funk Hospice, in care of Valley Baptist Medical Center, Harlingen, TX 78550, to Boy Scouts of America; or to Cal Farley¹s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79120.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Apr. 5, at Guinn-Horger Chapel, with interment in Hondo Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Guinn-Horger Funeral Home, Hondo.

Jane H. Lovvorn

SAN BENITO, TX — Jane H. Lovvorn, long time San Benito resident, church worker, and club leader, died April 4, 2003, in Valley Baptist Medical Hospital. She was born September 24, 1905, in Ansley, Nebraska, and moved to San Benito in 1919 with her parents Frank and Janet Housel, three sisters and two brothers.

She graduated from San Benito High School in 1923. Later she attended  Texas Christian University,  Texas A & I University (B.S. Degree) and the University of Houston (M.S. Degree). While attending T.C.U. she met her husband, Garland "Froggie" Lovvorn. They resided in the western part of  Texas until his death in 1942. Mrs. Lovvorn taught school for 32 years in San Benito. For many years, she was a Sunday school teacher in the First Christian Churches of Ralls, Plainview, Odessa, and San Benito.

In San Benito she served as president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization, the Dolly Vinsant Hospital Auxilary, the local chapter of the  Texas State Teachers Association, and the Retired Teacher’s Association. She accumulated over 5,000 hours of volunteer service in the Hospital Auxilary.

Mrs. Lovvorn was preceded in death by her husband, her son, J.Edd and by her daughter-in-law, Jean. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jack Cowden (Carol) of Weslaco; a son, Frank Lovvorn (Leslie) of Portland,  Texas; a devoted niece, Mrs. Bill Busa (Connye) of South Padre Island; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Grandchildren are: Jim Lovvorn (Sue), Los Gatos, CA, Art Cowden (Kathy), Mercedes, Sherry Rushing (Ben), Pueblo West, CO, Suzanne Culbreth, Nancy Roberts (Terry), and Jonie Lovvorn, all of Houston, Todd Lovvorn (Lisa), Corpus Christi, and Kimberly Lovvorn, Austin.

Visitation will be held for Mrs. Lovvorn on Sunday, April 6, 2003 at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel at 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito, TX from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family members present from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Memorial services will be held at the Frist Christian Church, San Benito, Monday, April 7, 2003 at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Jim McCurdy officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home, Bowie St., San Benito.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the San Benito 1st Christian Church or a charity of ones choice.
