Robert Paul Hartstock, Sr.
BROWNSVILLE — Robert Paul Hartstock Sr., a Rio Grande Valley resident for 22 years died September 25, 2003 from heart failure. He was 84 years old.
"My father was a decent man his entire life. If you needed anything, he would be there to help. His generosity and kindness extended to everyone," said his son, Robert Jr.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919 to Fredrich and Anna Hartstock, he was the youngest of 6 children.
In high school he started a career in the printing business, learning each new technology as time progressed, and continued in that field until his retirement. Like many men of his generation, his career in the printing business was interrupted by service in World War II. He served with the Army Air Force 850th bomber squadron as a Master Sargent.
His favorite story involved a return flight over England when his B-17 airplane required and emergency landing in a cornfield. At first, the farmer’s wife ran his crew off with a pitchfork. But Robert, the crew chief for the flight, convinced her they were the good guys. After the crew helped clean up the damage, they ate a lot of corn on the cob for several days.
After the war, he married his first wife, Kathryn Medal and enjoyed raising their son, Robert Jr. and daughter Nancy. Several years after Kathryn’s death he met and married Barbara Ruetnik and retired to Brownsville, Texas in 1981.
While in Texas, he enjoyed the best of Texas.
He and Barbara attended classes at UTB Southmost, studying plants, birds, languages and geography. As senior students, they visited the Cloud Forrest of Mexico, Big Bend National Park, the Bad Lands and many water ways and deserts. Soon after arriving from the Midwest, Robert found great humor when Barbara accidentally sat on a cactus. They were typical snowbirds for several years.
When not traveling, Robert gave generously of his time to the Brownsville Lion’s Club and the Brownsville VWF. One favorite event was to drive kids to camp each summer. Other volunteer activities included helping out during the Confederate Air Force show, where he worked the concession stand and enjoyed seeing the vintage planes.
He was also an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brownsville.
Local arrangements are with Delta Funeral Directors of Brownsville, 542-2222.
