Armando Cantu

LYFORD, TX — Mr. Armando Cantu went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center.

Armando was born February 6, 1936 to Felipe and Luisa Cantu.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Luisa Cantu; and five sons, Armando (Edith) Cantu of Lyford, Felipe (Socorro) Cantu of McAllen, Eduardo (Eva) Cantu of San Benito, Tony Cantu of Lyford and Hector (Dorothy) Cantu of Sebastian; three daughters, Alama Rosa (Oscar) Martinez of Weslaco, Gracie (James) Fox of Statesville, N.C. and Erica (Gary) Coleman of Beeville, TX. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Alfredo and Hermerejildo Cantu; and 6 sisters, Rosita Barbosa, Consuelo Barbosa, Olivia Cantu, Herminia Cantu, Otila Barbosa, Lupita Barbosa and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Felipe and Guillermo Cantu.

Visitation was held Thursday, July 8, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services will be Today, Friday, July 9, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in San Benito with Deacon Margarito Briones officiating. Interment will be at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Hilaria de la Cruz

HARLINGEN, TX — Born January 14, 1931. Passed away after lengthy battle with cancer. She was a lifelong resident of Harlingen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gregorio and Felipa Salinas Vasquez; a sister, Braulia Cantu as well as her husband, Manuel C. de la Cruz; and daughter, Paula Cavazos.

Francisca Aguirre

VILLA CAVAZOS, TX — Senorita, Francisca Aguirre, 96, of Villa Cavazos,  Texas entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center.

She was born on October 4, 1907 in El Naranjo,  Texas to Rosendo and Santos Moreno Aguirre.

Survivors include her sister, Andrea Martinez, Villa Cavazos, TX; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. led by Deacon Margarito Briones, on Wednesday, July 7, 2004.

Funeral service will b e held on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at 2 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church with interment to follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, Blvd., San Benito,  Texas 78586.

Arcelia "Archie" Sauceda Saenz

Harlingen — Arcelia "Archie" Sauceda Saenz, 57, entered into rest on Sunday at her residence surrounded by her family. Mrs. Saenz was born on January 21, 1947 to Juan and Dolores Sauceda, Jr. She was dedicated nurse for 32 years and a member of the Life Home Gardening Club.

She was preceded in death by her father, Juan Sauceda, her sister, Yolanda Torres and nephew, Felix Sauceda.

She is survived by her husband of six years, Rodolfo Saenz of Harlingen, TX; children, Norma De La Garza of Harlingen, TX, Melissa Martinez of La Feria, TX, Manuel (Rosemary) Cortez of Mercedes, TX, Ramon Cortez of Harlingen, TX; her mother, Dolores Trevino Sauceda of Harlingen, TX; grandchildren, Sarah, Leanna, Elizabeth, Ronald, Jr., Matthew, Rene, Jr.; sisters, Irma (Tomas) Herrera of San Benito, TX, Mary Jane (Jim) Castillo of Harlingen, TX and her brother, Juan (Juanita) Sauceda of San Benito, TX.

Dolores C. Hernandez

Santa Rosa — Dolores C. Hernandez, 81, entered into eternal rest on July 3, 2004. He was born March 23, 1923 in Mexico and was a longtime resident of Santa Rosa,  Texas.

He survived by his sons, Jose Guadalupe (Antonia) Hernandez of Santa Rosa, TX and Carlos (Alicia) Hernandez of Sicily Island, LA; daughters, Andrea G. Hernandez of Santa Rosa, TX, Maria (Pablo) Avalos of Santa Rosa, TX, Rosario (Daniel) Rangel of Edcouch-Elsa, TX and Patricia (Johnny) Torres of Santa Rosa, TX and sister, Maria Matilde Hernandez of Iowa.

Ray W. Lofton

HARLINGEN — Ray W. Lofton, 95, passed away Friday, July 2, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.

He was born August 14, 1908 in Baird,  Texas to John and Ida Nell (Gillit) Lofton. Ray graduated from Lyford High School in 1930, Ray and his first wife, Zoa MacAllister Stallings were married in 1937, Ray worked as a plant superintendent for  Texas Planting Seed Association.

Amada Z. Banda

PORT ISABEL, TX — Amada Z. Banda, 68 passed away on July 1, 2004 at Brownsville Medical Center. Mrs. Banda lived in Port Isabel most of her life and was very active in the community.

Member of Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church, and active member in the prayer group meeting for the church.

She is survived by her Two daughters, Alma (Jose Luis Limon) Banda of McAllen, and Terrie (Eddie) Mora of Port Isabel; her son, Joe Banda of Sugar Land,  Texas; Grandson, Eric (Clara) Mora of Bayview,  Texas; Granddaughter, Amanda Mora of Port Isabel; great granddaughter, Janessa Mora of Bayview; great grandson, Darren Mora of Bayview; Stepmother, Juanita Zapata of Port Isabel; 6 sister, Carlota (Mauro) Osorio of Port Isabel, Christina Galvan of Port Isabel, Maria Elena (Simon) RIvera of Brownsville, Augustina (Seferino) Rivera of Laguna Vista, Lucila Castillo of Port Isabel, and Enriqueta (Don) Rose of Florida; and a brother, Jose Zapata of Port Isabel.

She is preceded in death by her husband Demecio Banda; son, Efrain "Sonny" Banda, 2 sister;, Hortencia Ochoa and Felicitas Medrano; Brother, Eliodoro Zapata Jr.; Parents, Eliodoro Zapata Sr. and Maria Luisa Hernandez Zapata.

Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. today at Our Lady Star of Sea Catholic Church, 705 Longoria St., in Port Isabel.

In lieu of flowers memorial can be made in memory of Amada Z. Banda to America Diabetes Association, 515 Nolana Loop, McAllen, TX. 78504.

Funeral Arrangement entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas 399-1331.

Cecil Everett

PORT ISABEL, TX — Cecil Edwin "Fast Eddie" Everett, passed away at his residence, Wednesday, June 30, 2004, after a long struggle with emphysema.

Everett 71, was born December 29, 1932 in Austin,  Texas to Cecil E. and Peggy Shannon Everett. A Veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Essex. Everett, lived a varied life. He was a rice farmer near Houston and a draftsman who worked overseas designing oil refineries before settling in Port Isabel, where he owned and operated Fast Eddie’s Barbecue and, later, the Lost Galleon Seafood Restaurant. He took numerous honors in chili cook-off contests.

Everett also enjoyed horticulture, but his special interests were classic cars and woodworking. He once boasted a substantial collection of classic cars, and was expert in building models of historical ships, as well as other areas of woodwork.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 498 and of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8791 of Port Isabel.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Tommy Williamson; and a niece, Peggy Williamson.

He is survived by two sons, William Everett of Port Isabel and Edwin Ray Everett of Harlingen; daughter-in-law, Michelle Everett of Harlingen; grandchildren, Lorien, Katherine, Elizabeth and Drake Everett of Harlingen; sister, Mary Wright of Houston; niece, Sally Munson of Neshanic Station, N.J.; close friend, Bob  White of Brownsville and many other friends in the Laguna Madre area.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 3, 2004 at Chapel by the Sea on South Padre Island, with Chaplain Obed Henson officiating.

Visitation will precede the service at Chapel by the Sea, beginning at 10 a.m.

Following the Funeral Service, interment will be at Port Isabel City Cemetery with military Rites to be conducted at Graveside by members of V.F.W. Post 2035, V.F.W. Post 8791, and American Legion Post 498, and Funeral Honor Guard under the direction of Paul H. Spell.

Roberto G. Garcia

SAN BENITO, TX — Roberto G. Garcia, 64, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on June 29, 2004.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Esther Longoria Garcia and son, Roberto Garcia, Jr.

Survivors included his daughter, Patricia G. Trevino of San Benito; 2 sons, Ruben Garcia and Raul Garcia both of San Benito, TX; grandson, Romelo Trevino of San Benito; 5 sisters and 3 brothers.

Joshua A. Perez

SAN BENITO, TX — Our precious Angel Joshua Anthony Perez, entered the Kingdom of God on July 11, 2004.

He is survived by his loving parents, Crystal M. Perez and Juan Antonio Perez; maternal grandparents, Fidencio and Mary Martinez; paternal grandparents, Juan and Irene Perez.

Also surviving him are his great grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Lydia Pearl Garcia.

Maria Bautista

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria V. Bautista, 75, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother entered into rest on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born January 11, 1929.

Mrs. Bautista is survived by her daughter, Olga B. (Ernesto) Rodriguez; grandchildren, Ernesto (Ann) Rodriguez, Jr., Melissa (Raoul) Ysasi and Michael (Melissa Minney) Rodriguez; great grandchildren, Cassandra, Aaron, Sabrina and Luke; sisters, Elva Trevino of Brownsville and Paula Martinez of San Benito; brother, Jorge Vasquez of Brownsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rafael Romero Tapia

HARLINGEN, TX —Rafael Romero Tapia, 60, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom Friday, July 9. 2004 while at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Imelda Cantu. 2 daughters: Irma Cantu and Hilda Hernandez all of Harlingen. Parents: Eduardo Tapia and Belen Romero of Mante, Tamaulipas. 2 brothers: Nicolas Tapia and Jose Tapia both of Austin. 6 sisters: Ester Tapia and MartaTapia both of Austin, Graciela Tapia of Rio Hondo, Maria de la Luz, Oliva Tapia, Rosaura Tapia all of Mante, Tamps. 4 step-grandchildren: Jeanette Cantu, George Hernandez, Luis G. Hernandez, Arturo Sepulveda. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held and a holy rosary recited Monday July 12, 2004 .

Funeral services will be held today Tuesday July 13, 2004 at 2:00 pm at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic with Fr. Jorge Antonio Gomez.

Pallbearers will be Jorge Hernandez, Leonel Lopez, Jose G. Cantu, Vicente R. Henriquez, Nicolas Tapia and Vicente Henriquez, Jr.

Burial will follow to Las Rucias Cemetery under the direction of Trinty Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen, Tx

Matiana G. Perez

MERCEDES — Matiana G. Perez, 59, passed away Sunday at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

She is survived by her husband, Israel Perez of Mercedes; a son, Juan Enrique (Amelia) Perez of Edcouch, Alma Linda (Daniel, Jr.) Gonzalez of Mercedes; her mother, Santos G. Gomez of Mercedes; two brothers, Ricardo (Linda) Gomez and Roberto (Sara Rocha) Gomez both of Mercedes; a sister, Lydia Gomez of Mercedes and also surviving are her grandchildren, Rick Anthony Perez, Linda Jeanie Gonzalez, Lorrayne Jazmin Gonzalez, Daniel Gonzalez III, Lorissa Joelyn Gonzalez and Daven Jermain Gonzalez.

Visitation will be held Monday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Memorial Park in La Feria.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Charles J. (Chuck) Tresch

HARLINGEN — Charles J. (Chuck) Tresch, 77, passed away at his residence on Friday, July 9, 2004 after a yearlong battle with cancer.

He was born on May 27, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army/Air Corp. After his discharge from the military, he moved to Fox Lake, Illinois and for many years owned and operated a successful sand and gravel business. He and his wife Ellen moved to Harlingen in 1978 after wintering there for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lily Ann Tresch; two sons, Jack Tresch and Scott Tresch, and sister, Jeanine DeRudder.
