Arnaldo Alvarez

HOUSTON/HARLINGEN, TX — Arnaldo (Lalo) Alfredo Alvarez, 61, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 3, 2004. Arnaldo was born August 30, 1942 in Harlingen,  Texas. Arnaldo was born and raised in Harlingen and moved to Houston about 30 years ago.

He was in Harlingen to attend his sister’s funeral, Rosemary Villarreal, who had passed away July 1, 2004. He stood by her coffin and kissed her and whispered lovingly how much he loved her and how beautiful she looked, walked back to a pew and collapsed and died of a heart attack. In God’s love and mercy, he permitted Arnaldo to be surrounded by family who loved him and held him as he met with the Lord. All his family from Houston was with him.

"Thy will be done", thank you Lord for allowing us to be near him and hold him in our arms. Only you in you infinite mercy could make this happen.

He is preceded in death by his father, Lazaro Alvarez; his mother, Rosita Alvarez; his sister, Dorita Ledesma, Rosemary Villarreal; his brothers, Roy Lerma, Jose A. Alvarez, Guadalupe (Wale) Alvarez.

Survivors include his wife, Adela Aguilar Alvarez; two sons, Reymundo of California and Arnaldo Alfredo of Houston; three daughters, Olga Leticia, Laura, and Elena, all of Houston; and fourteen grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins in Houston and in the Rio Grande Valley; one sister, Olga (Benito) Cañas of Harlingen; one brother, Hector (Sarita) Alvarez of Harlingen; one brother-in-law, but more like a father than a brother-in-law; the family patriarch, Margarito Ledesma.

Services were held Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Our Lady of Guadalupe followed by burial at the Forrest Lawndale Memorial Gardens in Houston.

Armando Cantu

LYFORD, TX — Mr. Armando Cantu went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center.

Armando was born February 6, 1936 to Felipe and Luisa Cantu.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Luisa Cantu; and five sons, Armando (Edith) Cantu of Lyford, Felipe (Socorro) Cantu of McAllen, Eduardo (Eva) Cantu of San Benito, Tony Cantu of Lyford and Hector (Dorothy) Cantu of Sebastian; three daughters, Alama Rosa (Oscar) Martinez of Weslaco, Gracie (James) Fox of Statesville, N.C. and Erica (Gary) Coleman of Beeville, TX. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Alfredo and Hermerejildo Cantu; and 6 sisters, Rosita Barbosa, Consuelo Barbosa, Olivia Cantu, Herminia Cantu, Otila Barbosa, Lupita Barbosa and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Felipe and Guillermo Cantu.

Visitation was held Thursday, July 8, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services will be Today, Friday, July 9, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in San Benito with Deacon Margarito Briones officiating. Interment will be at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Joshua A. Perez

SAN BENITO, TX — Our precious Angel Joshua Anthony Perez, entered the Kingdom of God on July 11, 2004.

He is survived by his loving parents, Crystal M. Perez and Juan Antonio Perez; maternal grandparents, Fidencio and Mary Martinez; paternal grandparents, Juan and Irene Perez.

Also surviving him are his great grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Lydia Pearl Garcia.

Maria Bautista

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria V. Bautista, 75, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother entered into rest on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born January 11, 1929.

Mrs. Bautista is survived by her daughter, Olga B. (Ernesto) Rodriguez; grandchildren, Ernesto (Ann) Rodriguez, Jr., Melissa (Raoul) Ysasi and Michael (Melissa Minney) Rodriguez; great grandchildren, Cassandra, Aaron, Sabrina and Luke; sisters, Elva Trevino of Brownsville and Paula Martinez of San Benito; brother, Jorge Vasquez of Brownsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rafael Romero Tapia

HARLINGEN, TX —Rafael Romero Tapia, 60, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom Friday, July 9. 2004 while at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Imelda Cantu. 2 daughters: Irma Cantu and Hilda Hernandez all of Harlingen. Parents: Eduardo Tapia and Belen Romero of Mante, Tamaulipas. 2 brothers: Nicolas Tapia and Jose Tapia both of Austin. 6 sisters: Ester Tapia and MartaTapia both of Austin, Graciela Tapia of Rio Hondo, Maria de la Luz, Oliva Tapia, Rosaura Tapia all of Mante, Tamps. 4 step-grandchildren: Jeanette Cantu, George Hernandez, Luis G. Hernandez, Arturo Sepulveda. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held and a holy rosary recited Monday July 12, 2004 .

Funeral services will be held today Tuesday July 13, 2004 at 2:00 pm at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic with Fr. Jorge Antonio Gomez.

Pallbearers will be Jorge Hernandez, Leonel Lopez, Jose G. Cantu, Vicente R. Henriquez, Nicolas Tapia and Vicente Henriquez, Jr.

Burial will follow to Las Rucias Cemetery under the direction of Trinty Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen, Tx

Matiana G. Perez

MERCEDES — Matiana G. Perez, 59, passed away Sunday at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

She is survived by her husband, Israel Perez of Mercedes; a son, Juan Enrique (Amelia) Perez of Edcouch, Alma Linda (Daniel, Jr.) Gonzalez of Mercedes; her mother, Santos G. Gomez of Mercedes; two brothers, Ricardo (Linda) Gomez and Roberto (Sara Rocha) Gomez both of Mercedes; a sister, Lydia Gomez of Mercedes and also surviving are her grandchildren, Rick Anthony Perez, Linda Jeanie Gonzalez, Lorrayne Jazmin Gonzalez, Daniel Gonzalez III, Lorissa Joelyn Gonzalez and Daven Jermain Gonzalez.

Visitation will be held Monday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Memorial Park in La Feria.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Olivia Basaldua

HARLINGEN — Olivia Basaldua, 73, went to be with the Lord Saturday afternoon at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She was born to Leonarda Rodriguez and Jose Torres on June 3, 1930.

She was preceded in death by her son Jose Basaldua Jr., in 1981.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jose Basaldua of Harlingen; 2 daughters, Guadalupe B. (Rene) Reyna of Lozano,  Texas and Olga B. (Tony) Castro of Harlingen; 4 sons, David (Alma) Basaldua of Primera, Martin Basaldua, Jimmy Basaldua and Ronnie Gonzalez all of Harlingen; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; her brother and sisters, Jose Gonzalez, of Harlingen, Eusebio Gonzalez of Brownsville, Guadalupe Perez of San Benito, Hortencia De Leon of San Benito, Edlemiro Zuniga of Denver, Colorado, Odilia Anaya and Odilia Ramirez both of San Benito.

There will be a Holy Rosary tonight at 7 p.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Home. Visitation today from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services are tentatively set at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Tuesday, time pending, but will be announced by Trinity Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow to Las Flores Cemetery in San Benito.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Ruben Basaldua, George Basaldua, Rene Reyna Jr., Joe Gonzalez III, Joe Reyna, Tony Castro Jr., and Omar Corona. Honorary pallbearers will be Elizar Basaldua, David Basaldua Jr., and Julio Gonzalez Jr.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 S. F Street, Harlingen, TX 78550.

Merced F. (Nick) Araiza

HARLINGEN — Merced F. (Nick) Araiza was called to his home in Heaven on October 10, 2003. He was born on September 24, 1928 in Houston,  Texas.

He was preceded in death by his son, Felix Araiza, parents Natividad F. and Jose L Romero; his sister Maria Magdalena A. De Gonzales and brother George Cantu.

He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and St. Anthony’s Church. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Korean War Veteran serving from March 1946 to June 1967. While in active duty he was honored with the Korean Service, UN Service and Bronze Silver Star Medals. He continued his military service as a member of the Air Force Reserve through 1976. He was a past member of the American Legion Post 205.

At the time of his death he was employed with the City of Harlingen Landfill as a weight-scale operator where he loved meeting the people of Harlingen. Nick was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his lovely wife of 48 years Mariana Lopez Araiza; daughter, Sylvia Araiza of Austin, TX; sons, Edward (Janet) Araiza, Nick (Estela) Araiza and Daniel (Dorraine) Araiza all of Harlingen; brothers, Encarnacion (Maria) Araiza of Odessa, TX, Abel (Bertha) Araiza of San Antonio, TX; sisters, Josefina Garza of Harlingen, and Antonia Canales of Harlingen; sisters-in-law, Alicia Lopez of Brownsville, TX, and Guadalupe Lopez of Houston, TX. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday Oct. 12, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. funeral service at the Second Presbyterian Church, 901 W. Lincoln, Harlingen, TX. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria with full military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 205 and V.F.W. Post 2410.

Pallbearers will be Abel Araiza, Edward Araiza, Jr., Feliz Araiza, Michelle Araiza, Oralndo Araiza, Michael Ray Araiza, and David Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers will be various nephews, nieces and friends.

The family would like to thank the extra care and comfort provided by the Lifecare of Edinburg, Intensive Care Unit of VBMC, Dr. Pierce, Dr. Pean and home provider Eunice Gonzalez.

Gordon Thomas French

WESLACO, TX — Gordon Thomas French, 77, passed away October 9, 2003 in Silver City, New Mexico.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 12, 2003 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Graveside services and interment will be held Monday, October 13, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Officiating the service will be Dr. Gerry Christman, Pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Weslaco. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Weslaco Masonic Lodge #1212.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Cristino Jalomo

LASARA, TX — Cristino Jalomo, 76, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at his home in Lasara,  Texas.

He was born December 15, 1926 in Lasara,  Texas, to Rosalio and Josefa (Martinez) Jalomo. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lasara where he served as a Eucharist minister and would take communion to the sick. He lived in Lasara all his life.

He is survived by his wife, Senorina G. Jalomo of Lasara, one brother, Epifanio Jalomo of Carlsbad,  Texas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Duddlesten Chapel and 7 p.m. Friday, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 11, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Lasara Cemetery.

Dr. James E. Hefner

HARLINGEN, TX — Dr. James Earl Hefner, age 72, died suddenly the weekend of October 4, 2003. He was born in Sweetwater,  Texas on March 1, 1931, to James Robert and Alma Hefner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Alma Hefner who died in August, 1995, and his son’s mother, Bettie Lindberg Hefner.

He is survived by his loving son, David Hefner and daughter-in-law, Brenda of Mission; sister, Joyce Phillips and brother-in-law, Bob of Houston; nieces, Stephanie Phillips of Houston and Jennifer Sciba and her husband, Jeff, of Cedar Park; great nephews, Andrew Sciba and James Sciba; great niece, Lauren Sciba; aunts and uncles, Hayes and Nelle Hefner of Lubbock, Bernice Reddock of Brownwood and Wilma Ohlenbusch of Temple as well as numerous cousins.

He was raised in Edinburg,  Texas and graduated from Edinburg High School in 1948. He attended Edinburg Regional College and  Texas Tech University and graduated from Baylor College of Denistry. He served in the U.S. Air Forces as a dentist and was stationed in Saudi Abrabia and Germany. He established his dental practice in Harlingen upon his discharge from the Air Force.

He was a long-time active member of the Harlingen Kiwanis Club and was devoted to the work of the Gideon Society. He was also a faithful participant in the prison ministry in Brownsville. He was a strong Christian who touched many lives by sharing the Word of God and by his example of reverence, generosity and gentleness. His love for family, music, good health, and photography also permeated his life.

He grew up in the First Christian Church in Edinburg. He was currently a member of North Way Bible Church in Harlingen and led the Wednesday night Bible Study worship services.

Visitation hours will be held from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 9, 2003, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home at 10 a.m., Friday, October 10, 2003 with the Rev. kelly Rumfield officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Gideons at P.O. Box 2671, McAllen,  Texas 78505 or to North Way Bible Church, 2707 Shirley St., Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Jose R. (Ronnie) Fernandez

PROGRESO, TX — Jose R. (Ronnie) Fernandez, 64, died Saturday, October 4, 2003 at McAllen Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Eusebia S. Fernandez of Progreso; two sons, Aaron Mathew Fernandez, Jason Joe Fernandez both of Progreso; one daughter, Michelle (Dan) McCulley of Austin; two step-daughters, Sandra Wilson and Veronica Puente both of San Antonio.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.
