Daniel Hernandez Botello

HARLINGEN, TX — Daniel Hernandez Botello, 73, passed away early Sunday morning October 6, 2003 at La Hacienda Health Care Nursing Home.

Born in Mission,  Texas he lived in Harlingen most of his life. He was founder of Botello Shoe Shop.

He is preceded in death by a son, Daniel Botello Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Maria de Jesus Garza Botello of Harlingen; children, Pete Botello (Hilda) of Dallas, Ruben Botello of Harlingen, Elizabeth Cabrera (Ediberto) of Dallas, Alma Cabrera (Agustin) of Plano, Esteban Botello (Lisa) of Dallas, Rene Botello (Adrianna) of Reno, Nev., Frida Cantu (Clemente) of Harlingen; 4 brothers, Dionicio Botello, Raul Botello, Danaciano Botello, Oscar Botello; 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at 7 p.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robert Rodriguez officiating.

Arrangements are under the direciton of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen,  Texas

Sylvia Rodriguez

SAN BENITO — Sylvia Rodriguez, 59, entered into rest on Friday, October 3, 2003 at a local nursing home. She was born on June 11, 1944 in Harlingen, TX to Manuel Rodriguez and Elvira De La Garza.

She is survived by her son Carlos (Nelda) Decker of San Benito; daughter Abigail "Lisa" (David) Sanchez of San Benito; sister Becky Rodriguez of San Benito and Guadalupe Potter of San Benito; grandchildren Daniel Decker, David G. Sanchez Jr., Jackie Sanchez, Jerry Rodriguez and April Rodriguez all of San Benito; nephews Julio and Jorge Coello both of San Benito; nieces Jeanette Coello, Naomi Coello and Lisa Coello and her aunt Delia Galvan of Brownsville, TX.

A Rosary will be held on Monday, October 6, 2003 at San Benito Funeral Home at 7 p.m.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 2 p.m. with Deacon Gilberto Perez officiating. Interment of cremains will follow at Brownsville City Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home in San Benito, TX.

Helen E. Rowland

HARLINGEN, TX — Helen E. Rowland, 89, slipped her earthly bonds and ascended to her eternal reward on Tuesday, September 30, 2003. She left behind her husband of 47 years, John M. (Jack) Rowland, Jr., extended family members and countless people who were blessed by her caring and selfless nature.

Charity and giving of herself were a major part of Helen’s life. With a smile and a kind word she worked with homeless shelters and provided donations of food, clothing and other needs, which she gave from her own possesions and collected from others she recruited to her many helpful projects.

Laboring in the shelters was only a small portion of Helen’s good works. She was a continuing volunteer at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, gave of her time and talents to South  Texas Hospital and was a regular volunteer at the Marine military Academy Chapel. Some of her most important work, over many years, was helping to secure homes for babies being put up for adoption.

During a very active life, Helen worked as office manager for Dr. Willis Jondahl and served on the Board of Directors as Bahia Mar Resort on South Padre Island. She was also active in Zonta International, serving in many capacities and offices, including President. One of her most enjoyable assignments in that organization was a member of the Scholarship Selection Committee.

Helen E. Rowland has left us now, but she will continue on as a meaningful memory, and we will always remember that winning smile and warm, caring heart.

Helen is survived by her husband, John M. Rowland, Jr.; stepdaughter, Diane Rowland Church and son-in-law, Peter L. Church; grandchildren, Jill Church Myers and Christopher Church; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Myers, Jessica Myers, Rebecca Church and David Church; niece, Jerry Holmes and nephew, Robert (Dick) Maloney.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2003, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the family present for visitation 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, October 6, 2003 at 10 a.m. in the mausoleum at Mont Meta Memorial Cemetery in San Benito with Dr. Don Higginbotham officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Luisa Cuellar

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Luisa Cuellar, 83, of Brownsville went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at Brownsville Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eliseo Cuellar; one daughter, Inez Valdez; and three grandchildren, Yvette Ramirez, Gustavo Valdez, and Oscar Martinez.

Mrs. Cuellar is survived by eleven children, Graciela Compean of San Benito, Eliseo Cuellar, Jr. of Brownsville, Margarita Cuellar of Indiana, Dorothy Cuellar Ling of La Feria, Hortencia Guerra, Esperanza Cuellar, Rosalinda Moreno and Fernando Cuellar all Brownsville, Nereida Mejia of Florida, Eusebio Cuellar of Brownsville and Manuel Nunez,

Jr. of Harlingen; 36 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; four brothers, Epifanio Salinas, Juan Salinas, Martin Salinas and Melchor Salinas; and two sisters, Manuela Vela and Jesusa de la Garza.

Visitation will begin today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation will resume on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be on Monday, October 6, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Port Isabel City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Manuel Nunez, Jr., Alberto Mejia, III, Daniel Guerra, Juan Eliseo Compean, Juan Jose Moreno, and Manuel Nunez, III.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trevino Funeral Home.

Charles Bryant

HARLINGEN, TX — Charles (Chuck) Clifford Bryant, 69, was born June 21, 1934 in Rockwood, Tennessee and passed away January 6, 2004 in Harlingen, TX.

He is survived by his son, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Bryant; two grandsons, Jon-Luc and Dandre; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by his daughter, La Brenda Bryant; father, Ardell Bryant; mother, Lola Best Bryant; and three brothers, John, Howard and James Bryant of Tennessee.

Mr. Bryant retired from the United Stated Air Force and served during the  Vietnam War during his service to his country.

After retiring from the Air Force, he taught and called Square dances.

He produced Square Dance records on the Mustang Records recording label, which he owned. His last years he spent calling Square Dances at the Fun in the Sun Trailer Park and made lots of friends in all walks of life.

His favorite pastime was spent playing golf with friends and working as a Realtor.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2004 at 10 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, TX with Rev. Wayne Peck officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Debra A. "Debbie" Hempe

Annville, PA — Debra A. "Debbie" Hempe, 42, of Annville, PA, formerly of Harlingen, TX, died Sunday, January 4, 2004 in M.S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA.

She was born October 25, 1961 in Grandview, MO, a daughter of Don Tatum, Jr. and Charlotte (Pogue) Pate.

She was of the Baptist Faith; a Daughter of the Republic of the State of  Texas (a direct descendant of one of the original 300 families to settle in  Texas). Debbie also was a Hospice volunteer in  Texas for 5 years and was a strong advocate for the Breast Cancer Coalition.

Debbie lit up any room as soon as she entered it. She had an inner spirit that glowed which is now in heaven. She always gave more in life than she received. She lived life on her own terms.

Surviving are her husband of 20 years, George A. Hempe; 3 sons, James E., George D., and David A. Hempe all at home; her mother, Charlotte (Pogue) Pate and her husband, Ken of Houston, TX; her father, Don Tatum, Jr., of San Antonio, TX; her mother-in-law, Juanita Hempe Kennedy of Brownsville, TX; a sister, Donna Zoerner and her husband, Roel of Harlingen, TX; 2 brothers, Dan Tatum and his wife, Su Chong of Harlingen, TX, and David Kohl and his wife, Susan of Dallas, TX; a half brother, Walter Horvath and his wife, Linda of Houston, TX; 2 half sisters, Sonya  Johnson and her husband, Steve of Houston, TX and Dorothy Tatum of  Texas; plus numerous nieces and nephews who she adored.

A memorial service will be held Monday, January 12, 2004 at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, Harlingen.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Debbie Hempe Breast Cancer Foundation, c/o  Texas State Bank, 1902 W. Tyler, Harlingen, TX 78550. Attn: George Hempe.

Erma V. Kendrick

HARLINGEN, TX — Erma Vercilla Horn Kendrick, 94, passed away December 24, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Erma was born in Roseland, Kansas on April 22, 1909.

She was one of four children, all of which preceded her in death except one sister, Opal Horn Countryman and husband, Henry of Independence, MO. Erma had 55 wonderful years with her husband, Edwin Kirkpatrick Kendrick. He also preceded her in death a number of years ago. They raised two daughters, Pat (John) Olson of Harlingen, TX and Kay Humbird of Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren, Gordon (Pam) Wehner of Liberty, MO, Patti Wehner (Roeland) Park, Paula (Don) Whaley of Louisburg, KS, Larry Humbird III of Shawnee, KS, and Jackie (Dave) Karros of Shawnee, KS. There are also three great grandchildren. She also leaves a special sister-in-law, Margaret Kendrick Peoples of Olatha, KS.

She was an active and devoted member of Community of Christ Church (R.L.D.S.) her entire life. She worked as a secretary and a seamstress. She loved oil painting and bridge. Erma was initiated in the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 641 on January 27, 1977. She was Worthy Matron twice 1982-1983 and 1987-1988. She never said no and served in many offices. She lived alone with her memories of a wonderful life. She traveled the world with her husband. She still enjoyed shopping with her patient caregiver, Emma.

Burial was December 29, 2003 in Kansas City, KS.

A memorial service will be conducted by Eastern Star Chapter 641 at Eastgate Park, January 7, 2004 at 10 a.m., aided by devoted friends of Eastgate Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the Eastgate Garden Club.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Melvin Bryon Seymour

HARLINGEN — Melvin Bryon Seymour, 81, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2003 in Big Springs, TX. He wass born on October 2, 1922 in McKlain, Kansas. He lived in Los Fresnos for 40 years.

Mr. Seymour was a retired Air Force Veteran. He served for 27 years and was in World War II and in Vietnam. He was a proud Veteran and enjoyed serving his country.

He is survived by his wife, Esmeralda Seymour; stepdaughter, Alyssa P. Seymour; nephew, John W. Seymour; sister, Margie J. Seymour and many extended family members in McKlain City, Kansas.

No local services, his remains were sent home to Kansas City, Kansas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Myrtle Whorton

WESLACO — Myrtle Whorton, 102, passed away peacefully in Weslaco, TX.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Donna City Cemetery with the Rev. Elizabeth Smith, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Donna, officiating the service.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Guadalupe C. Alcorta

HARLINGEN, TX — Guadalupe Cantu Alcorta, 74, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center with her family by her side. She was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.

She was born in Ohio Station,  Texas on December 12, 1929 to George Cantu and Anita Rodriguez Cantu.

She is preceded in death by her father, George Cantu and her mother, Anita Rodriguez Cantu.

She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Severo Alcorta; and her children, Albert (Lico) (Sylvia) Moreno Sr., Ester (Narciso) Chamberlain both of Idalou, TX, Dalia Trevino, and Maria Elena Ayala both of Harlingen; 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. She is also survived by one brother, Rudy Cantu of Little Rock, Arkansas; several stepbrothers, and stepsisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Friday, January 2, 2004 with a holy rosary recited in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

The funeral procession will depart Trinity Funeral Chapel today, January 3, 2004 at 12:30 PM for a 1 PM mass of christian burial at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church with Deacon Reyes as celebrant. Interment to follow at Las Rucias Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Alberto Moreno Jr., Paul Moreno, Billy Moreno, Brigido Herrera, Timothy George Chamberlain, and Nicholas Chamberlain. Honorary pallbearer will be Guadalupe’s great grandson Gustavo Palacios.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F St. Harlingen, Tx 78550.
