Patricia Diane Garcia

HARLINGEN, TEXAS — Patricia Diane Garcia, 50, went with the Lord on Wednesday, December 31, 2003. She passed away at her residence after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born on October 3, 1953 in Streator, ILL., then later moved to the Valley.

Diane is survived by her husband, Joe Garcia, her son, Thomas John Yuhas (Diana), grandson, Sean Thomas Yuhas of Aurora, ILL., her mother, Winifred Skelly of Harlingen and sister, Susan Trant (Mike) of Bryan, TX.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

She was loved by many and would like to thank the Garcia family, Paradies Shops, Valley International Airport, Southwest Airlines friends and co-workers, Sandi Jo Funk Hospice, Dr. Todd Shenkenberg, Dr. Bosser and the staff of M.D. Anderson Services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sandi Jo Funk Hospice, P.O. Box Drawer 2588, Harlingen,  Texas 78551 or to the Humane Society of Harlingen, 1106 Markowsky, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Javier Cantu

BAYVIEW, TX — Javier Cantu, 32, entered into rest on Monday, December 29, 2003 at his residence.

He was born October 18, 1971 in McAllen,  Texas.

Mr. Cantu was a member of the Department of Public Safety Officer Association/ Texas State Troopers Association, D.P.S. Trooper for 5 years and had been employed with the Pharr P.D. for 4 years.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Cantu of Bayview, TX; parents, Guadalupe and Martha Cantu of Alamo, TX; 2 daughters, Sydney Cantu of Bayview and Jasmine Cantu of Bayview; siblings, Olinda (Jesus) Moreno of San Juan, TX, Monica (Jose Luis) Gonzalez of Alamo, TX, and Gabriel Cantu of San Juan, TX; Maternal grandmother, Cipriana Martinez.

Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Harlingen, 10 a.m., Friday, January 2, 2004 with Father Horacio Chavarria officiating.

Pallbearers will be Rufus Castro, Homer Martinez, Gabriel Cantu, Jesse Moreno, Jose Luis Gonzalez and Juan Martinez.

Memorial donations can be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, Harlingen,  Texas.

Harold D. Vanderpool

INDEPENDENCE, MO — Harold D. (Van) Vanderpool, 87, of Independence, MO, passed away December 25, 2003 at Independence Regional Health Cneter.

He was born July 26, 1916 in Mercer County MO to Claude and Iris (Arnote) Vanderpool and graduated from Trenton High School, Trenton Junior College, and MU, Columbia MO, receiving BS in EE. He married Jerrene Morris of Columbia June 22, 1941. Harold worked as a civilian electrical engineer at Wright Paterson Air Force Base, near Dayton OH developing aircraft radar and anti-jamming devices as well as IR and photo guidance systems. Following his retirement in 1973 he enjoyed many years as a ham radio operator, computer enthusiast, square dancer and winter Texan at the Sunshine RV Park in Harlingen,  Texas. In 1998 he returned to MO.

He is survived by his wife, Jerrene; son, George R. (Enon OH); daughter, N. Luanne (Chicago IL); grandsons, John, David, Joshua, and Andre; his sister, Kathryn Webb-Ballard (Sterling CO); great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and preceded in death by his son, Jon Harold; and brothers, Neil, Wendal, and Thomas.

Contributions are suggested to Enon United Methodist Church, 135 S. Harrison St., Enon OH, or to a charity of donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Charter Funerals. 816-921-5555

John T. Halberstadt

SAN BENITO, TX — John T. Halberstadt, 65, passed away December 25, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born August 23, 1938 in Urbana, Illinois.

He had lived in San Benito,  Texas for several years and was a Structural Engineer. He was married for 40 years and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2410 in Harlingen,  Texas.

The family of John T. Halberstadt wishes to thank the Nurses at Valley Baptist Medical Center I.C.U. Floor and to Dr. Luis Eguia and Dr. Ruben Lopez and especially to Nurse Irene Yeling. Also to all their friends in San Benito and to all his friends at the V.F.W. Post 2410.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Susan "Sue" Halberstadt, San Benito; mother, Iola M. Damman, San Benito; brother, Jim (Sandy) Halberstadt, Minnesota; sister, June Edmond, Iowa; 5 nieces and 6 nephews.

Private services will be held with entombent at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Leticia Z.G. Perez

La Feria — Leticia Z.G. Perez, 38, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Letty was a lifelong resident of La Feria.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Avelina; grandparents, Telesforo and Herlinda Rodriguez and grandmother Felipa Zavala.

She is survived by her husband of eight years Miguel Perez; her three wonderful children Cynthia Collen (Lloyd), Robert Anthony and Kassy Gonzalez; sisters, Sofia and Belinda (Maricela); brothers, Randy (Margaret) and George (Hermilia), and her father Guadalupe (Maria) Zavala.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, February 22, 2004 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 23, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at La Capilla Cemetery in Santa Rosa, TX.

Pallbearers will be Robert A. Gonzalez, Randy Zavala, George Zavala, Gilbert Villanueva, Lloyd Warner and Alfredo Zavala, Jr.

Letty loved Life. She was spontaneous and carefree. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in La Feria.

Helen Spicer

LA FERIA, TX — Helen Marie Petty Spicer of La Feria,  Texas went to be with our Lord on February 18, 2004 at the age of 97. Helen was born in Sloan, Iowa on May 13, 1906.

She was preceded in death by her parents, E.F. Shannon and Florence Aleta Nelson Shannon; two brothers, Charles E. Shannon and Harold A. Shannon.

She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Bazar Gurley, Weslaco,  Texas; one son, Charles Eugene (Annibell) Petty, Luling,  Texas; two step daughters, Sharon Gail Faubion, Flower Buff,  Texas, and Suzanne Marie (Ted) Vides, Miami, Florida; one step-son, John Anthony Spicer, Houston,  Texas; one foster son, Raul Ramos Martinez, Albany Kentucky; 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Grandma we love you and we miss you. We sit here today and long to hear your laughter and feel your touch. The last days we spent with you were the most wonderful days of our lives. They were the hardest but the most special. Grandma watch over us while we wait till the day we can be together again. Love Raul, Michael, Michelle, Jessica, Sharon, George, and Suzie.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel in La Feria.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 21, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church of La Feria. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria. Pallbearers will be Roger Petty, James Petty, Troy Petty, Michael Martinez, Shane Scammell, Ken Button, Raul Martinez and George Bonk. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Allen, Steven Ybanez, and Damian Vazquez.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Palms Chapel in La Feria.

Gabriel T. Silva

South Bend, IN — Gabriel T. Silva, 62 years old, residing on Clara Avenue, South Bend, passed away at 10:10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Silva was born on February 23, 1941, in La Feria, TX to the late Tomas and Petra (Trevino) Silva. He lived in South Bend for the past 38 years. On March 17, 1961, in La Feria, TX, he married the former Dominga Martinez who survives.

Along with his loving wife of 43 years, Dominga, survivors include: five daughters, Noelia (Kevin) Sanders of Lakeville, Mary (Kevin) Fuchs of Lakeville, Norma (Robert) Hennesey of South Bend, Sylvia (John) Horvath of South Bend, and Nelfa (Chad) Newport of South Bend; 13 grandchildren; four sisters, Lucia Leija, Tomasa Trevino, Rosa Jimenez, and Petra Garza, all of  Texas; and one brother, Lupe Silva of  Texas.

Mr. Silva retired from KoKoKu Wire Industries, South Bend where he was involved with the machine maintenance. Mr. Silva was extremely knowledgeable with machinery and was mechanically inclined. As a hobby, he enjoyed working on cars and helped many people in doing so.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704  Johnson Road, South Bend. Rev. Derrick Sneyd will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.

Friends may visit with the family from 3-8 p.m., on Friday, February 20th, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, where a rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Gabriel T. Silva may be donated to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

Gilberto Cavazos

MERCEDES, TX — Gilberto Cavazos, 61, passed away Tuesday at his residence in Mercedes.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Cavazos of Mercedes; four sons, Antonio Cavazos of Ft. Worth, Gilberto Cavazos, Jr. of Mercedes, Tomas Cavazos of Monett, MO and Juan Cavazos of Sinton, TX; three daughters, Emilia Paredes of Mercedes, Petra Carpenter of Ft. Worth and Maria Huerta of Mercedes; two brothers, Rafael Cavazos of La Mesa, TX and Leonardo Cavazos of Weslaco; one sister, Inez Ibarra of Mercedes.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren.

Alejandro Cantu

HARLINGEN, TX — Alejandro (Alex) Cantu, 51, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004, at St. Luke Episcopal Hospital in Houston, TX. Our beloved brother, Alex went home to be with our Lord. He was born January 3, 1953 to Adelaido Olvera Cantu and Ramona Martinez Cantu.

Alex attended the Rio Hondo I.S.D. and graduated in 1972. He served in the U.S. Army for 14 years with tours in Fort Sam Houston, TX, Ft. Hood, TX and Germany. He lived in Harlingen most of his life.

He is preceded in death by both parents; a brother, Alberto Cantu in September 1997; and a nephew, Bobby Gomez in October 2002. Alex will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Ysidra Losoya

EDINBURG, TX — Ysidra Losoya, 67, passed away Sunday at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston.

She is survived by her husband, Enrique Losoya of Edinburg; three sons, Guadalupe Ruiz, Rodolfo Ruiz both of Edinburg, and Alberto Ruiz of Mercedes; also surviving are two daughters, Marta Contreras of Donna, Albina Gonzalez of Stratford, TX; also surviving are eighteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Chapel services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Interment will follow at Solis Cemetery in La Feria.

Serving as pallbearers will be Guadalupe Ruiz, Rodolfo Ruiz, Alberto Ruiz, Juan Pablo Gonzalez, Armando Contreras, Manolito Ruiz. Honorary pallbearers will be Miguel Contreras, Fidencio Contreras, Ariel Ruiz, Pablo Gonzalez, Jr., Rodolfo Ruiz, Jr., Samuel Ruiz. Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Maria De Jesus Cavazos

SANTA ROSA, TX — Maria De Jesus Cavazos, entered into the Lords heavenly kingdom, Saturday, February 14, 2004 at Knapp Medical Center.

She is survived by her parents, Sandra Garza and Enrique Cavazos; 2 brothers, Enrique Cavazos, Jr., and Modesto R. Cavazos; 2 sisters, Brandi M. Cavazos and Margarita C. Cavazos; maternal grandparents, Elena Garza and Reynaldo Garza; paternal grandparents, Modesto Cavazos and Alicia Cavazos; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at 10 a.m., with Fr. Andre Kazadi as celebrant at Santo Nombre Cemetery under the direction of Santa Rosa Funeral Home, 201 N. Main, Santa Rosa, TX.

Maria M. Oviedo

Sebastian — Maria M. Oviedo, 75 years old, was born December 11, 1928 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, entered eternal rest on February 14, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas.

She’s preceded in death by her husband, Celestino Oviedo Sr. April 11, 1999.

She was a member of St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in Sebastian, TX. She also sang in the church choir, and a member in the Alter Society.

She is survived by her brother, Guadalupe Martinez; sisters, Domitila Cita Roje Martinez of San Luis Potosi, MX; six daughters, Margie (Jim) Acuna, Angie (George) Villarreal, Rachel (Julian) Rodriguez, Yolanda (Beto) Rickford, Dora (Domingo) Rangel, Rosa (Edward) Mendez; five sons, Celestino Jr. (Mary) Oviedo,

Tomas (Berta) Oviedo, Ray (Lina) Oviedo, Abel (Martha) Oviedo, Ernesto Oviedo and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
