Pauline Lenora Ayoub Fry

CORPUS CHRISTI/SAN BENITO — Pauline Lenora Ayoub Fry passed away in Corpus Christi on March 18, 2004, six days after her 80th birthday, after a lengthy illness. She was born at 307 S. Dowling Street in San Benito, TX to Emil and Mary Alkek Ayoub. Pauline’s parents were Lebanese immigrants and early pioneers in San Benito. She was the fourth of six children.

Pauline attended San Benito Schools and graduated from high school in 1941 where she was active in school organizations including being a featured soloist in Ed Hatchett’s Glee Club.

Her first job was selling tickets at the Rivoli Theater. Pauline used some of her $7.00 per week salary to install and pay the monthly bill on the family’s first telephone. After attending business school, she was employed at Atkin’s Insurance Agency until she moved to Corpus Christi to marry Wilson Fry, her longtime high school sweetheart, who was stationed at the Naval Air Station. They were married on base on March 17, 1944.

After the end of World War II, Pauline and Wilson moved back to San Benito and shortly thereafter bought a small frame home approximately one mile north of San Benito on Sam Houston Blvd. The Fry home was always a gathering place of all the family and friends. Thanksgiving was an annual event there with an abundance of Lebanese food as well as traditional fare.

Wilson and Pauline were good dancers and enjoyed dancing on many occasions. They passed on their love of dancing to their children by teaching them to dance at home.

Since the Frys lived in what was considered "the country" at that time, their modest home was a setting where the adults could sit out in the yard on hot summer afternoons and evenings while the children rode horses or fished in the resaca with Uncle Wilson, played games or explored the brush adjacent to the house.

Aunt Pauline was well known by the family for being an excellent cook. Her most popular dish was her fabulous fried chicken and delicious mashed potatoes. She also worked wonders with roundsteak, which was often chickenfried.

In 1960, she accepted employment by C. G. "Sonny" Wollitz at Oasis Water Co. She worked with her family friend, Louise Lanum until returning to Corpus Christi in 1969. While in Corpus Christi, she was employed at Memorial Medical Center until her retirement in 1986.

While living in Corpus Christi, the Frys acquired many friends. Many of her daughter’s and granddaughter’s friends referred to her as "Tite", a Lebanese term of endearment for grandmother.

Pauline Fry was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norman Wilson Fry, and her brothers, George, Jack, and Dave. In addition to her brothers, she was preceded in death by her loving and much beloved sisters-in-law, Alma, Virginia and Cleo.

Survivors include her son, Ben Fry of San Benito and daughter, Judy Wright of Corpus Christi. Pauline’s granddaughters include Paula (Sonny) Ryan, Amy Wright of Corpus Christi and Beth Fry of Denton, TX. "Tites" great-grandchildren are Christina, Tyler and Lee. Aunt Pauline is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister, Virginia (Jack) Burroughs of Sunnyvale, TX; her brother, Sam (Rachel) of Richmond, VA and by a special friend and caregiver, Rosie Mendez.

The family will be available for visitation at Thomae Funeral Home in San Benito on Sunday, March 21, 2004 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Mont Meta Cemetery on March 22, 2004 at 4 p.m.

Honorary pallbearers include her borther, Sam Ayoub, her cousins, George Ogdee, Ed Ogdee, her nephews Jack Ayoub, Andy Ayoub, Chuck Ayoub, Rodney Ayoub, Mike Ayoub, Johnny Ayoub, Dr. Jack Burroughs and Tim Burroughs.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to All Saints Episcopal Church in San Benito or the charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home.
