Leonel V. Cavazos

LYFORD, TX — Leonel V. Cavazos, 72, of Lyford entered into to rest Thursday, December 18, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Cavazos proudly served his country in the United States Army and served in the Korean War.

He is survived by his sisters; Celia Quintanilla and Elvira Marroquin (Roger) of Harlingen; brothers; Alfredo V. (Hortencia), Cavazos Roy (Sylvia) Cavazos of Harlingen, Francisco (Helen) Cavazos of Raymondville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Juan and Rosa Cavazos, Jr.

Visitation will be today (Friday) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and a rosary will be at 7 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 20, 2003 at the Santa Monica Catholic Church with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. The mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. with Father David  Jackson as celebrant and interment will follow at Cavazos Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Omar Cavazos, Joel Cavazos, Anthony Cavazos, Andrew Cavazos, Carlos Cavazos, and Daniel Quintanilla.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Alejandro Perez

MERCEDES, TX — Alejandro Perez, 70, passed away Tuesday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Perez in 1977 and is survived by his wife, Otila R. Perez of Mercedes; five sons, Alejandro Perez, Jr., Ruben Perez both of Mercedes, Abel Perez of La Villa, Jon Perez of McAllen, Oscar Perez of Fairview Heights, Illinois; two daughters, Yolanda Perrin of Ramstein, Germany, Patricia Ann Perez of Mercedes; three brothers, Genovevo Perez, Daniel Perez, Gilberto Perez all of Mercedes; three sisters, Olivia Becerra, Manuela Huerta, Reyes Huerta all of Mercedes; also surviving are thirteen grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. both nights at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Emilio A. Villarreal

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — 2 Timothy – 4:7 ***I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Emilio Anzaldua Villarreal of Raymondville,  Texas entered into eternal rest to be with our heavenly Father on December 16, 2003 after a lengthy illness. He was born September 5, 1917.

Emilio was a World War II Veteran who served as a member of the 15th Infantry in the United States Army. Wounded five times and receiving various medals including a Purple Heart, he fought in the major campaigns of French Morocco (Casablanca) and North Africa. Under General George S. Patton, he fought in Licata, Sicily, Palermo and Messina, Italy and then as part of VI Corps, went on to the battle of Anzio Beach Head.

For 30 years he served the people of Willacy County as Justice of the Peace until his retirement; as well as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years Dalia C. Villarreal; daughter, Sylvia (Trinidad) Gonzales of McAllen; sons, Hector (Sonia) Villarreal of Harlingen and Samuel David Villarreal of Edinburg; his grandchildren, Dianira (Juan) Negrete of Edinburg, Veronica Ann Gonzales of McAllen, Vivian, Evelyn, and Lilian Villarreal of Harlingen, and Adrian Emilio Villarreal of Edinburg; his great grandson, Joaquin Julian Negrete.

He is also survived by his sisters, Ofelia V. Anzaldua (Roberto +) of Laramie, Colorado, Maria Antonia V. de Leon of Raymondville, Beatrice (Eduardo) Salinas of La Porte, and Elva (Roberto) Garcia of San Antonio as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Trinidad and Beatrice Villarreal; his brothers, Humberto, Samuel, and Ruben Villarreal; and an infant son.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2003 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Duddlesten Funeral Home with a rosary to be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, December 18, 2003 at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

military graveside service will be held by the Harlingen American Legion Post #205 and V.F.W. #2410 and the Raymondville American Legion Post #390 and V.F.W. #6719.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Raul V. Blanco

LOZANO, TX — Raul V. Blanco, 79, entered into the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ on December 14, 2003 at his residence. He was born January 13, 1924 in El Paso,  Texas, to Rafael and Maria V. Blanco.

Raul was a World War II Navy Veteran. He retired from Vons Grocery Market Dept. in Glendale, California in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Consuelo P. Blanco; daughters, Elvia (Tony) Monaco, Melinda Flemister, Cecilia L. Blanco, Marta E. Blanco; and one son, Raul C. Blanco; brothers, Rafael F. (Alicia) Blanco, Guillermo (Lucinda) Blanco; sisters, Maria S. (Francisco) Rico, Ofelia Pinard, Maria E. (Sergio) Montelongo, Celia (Daniel) Herrera; and sister-in-law, Berta Blanco; 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rafael and Maria V. Blanco; his brothers, Rafael Blanco, Jose Elias Blanco, and Rafael Blanco; and sister, Soledad Blanco.

Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, December 15, 2003 with a Holy Rosary to begin 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo,  Texas. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park with military Honors. Pallbearers will be Rafael F. Blanco, Sergio A. Montelongo, Daniel Herrera, Robert Weaver, Jr., Dionisio P. Garza, and Narciso Martinez.

Juan Pablo Silva

HARLINGEN — Juan Pablo Silva, 50, entered into rest on Sunday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Silva was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and a graduate of Harlingen High School and T.S.T.C. He was employed with KBGT-TV for over 30 years as an Engineer and Chief Engineer.

He was preceded in death by his father Pablo Silva.

Mr. Silva is survived by his wife Elizabeth Silva, children Carlos Silva, David Silva, Margarita Silva, Veronica Silva, Rosemary Mata, step-son Ramon Buitron IV; mother Natividad Silva; sisters Molly (Rosendo) Ramirez, Maria (Miguel) Gayton, Oralia (Robert) Lozano, Celia (Israel) Lozano; grandchildren Aaron Mata, Illiana Silva, Christopher Silva and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, December 15, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Munoz, George Munoz, Robert Lozano, Israel Medrano, Rosendo Ramirez and Miguel Gayton. Juan had a love for archery, fishing and hunting. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ramon Barrientos

SAN BENITO — Ramon Barrientos, 49, passed away on Friday evening at a local hospital.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Victoria P. Barrientos in 2002.

He is survived by one daughter Maria Oralia Barrientos of Bryan/College Station; his father, Carlos Zuniga Barrientos of San Benito; three sisters, Abundia "Avon" Rios, Rosa Gonzalez, and Raquel Barrientos all of San Benito; five brothers, Carlos Barrientos Jr., Ruben Barrientos, Martin Barrientos, Roel Barrientos all of San Benito, and Joe Barrientos of Nebraska. Two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a rosary tonight and tomorrow night, Monday, at 7 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel 701 N. Bowie, San Benito. Chapel services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel.

Services are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie, San Benito, 956-399-9992.

Wendell H. "Buster" Atkins

HARLINGEN, TX — Wendell H. "Buster" Atkins, 90, passed away Monday at a local hospital. He was born October 23, 1913 in Van Buren, Arkansas.

His parents James and Lulu Atkins preceded him in death.

Buster attended University of Arkansas where he was a cheerleader. He was 32 Degree Mason, Wichita Lodge #99. He was an engineer for Beach Craft during World War II. Prior to moving to Harlingen, in 1952, he was a cotton buyer for Cannon Mills and Eugene B. Smith & Co., in Dallas. He was a resident of Harlingen for 52 years. He was a cotton merchant with Idris Traylor Cotton Company until his retirement in 2001.

Wesley Evon Lepard

HARLINGEN, TX — Wesley Evon Lepard left this world to be with his savior on Saturday, April 10, 2004, the day before Easter Sunday, while visiting with his family in Grand Prairie,  Texas.

President and CEO of Magnolia International Corporation, Wes was a leader in the field of maquiladora plant development along the  Texas-Mexico border.

Wes leaves behind a legacy of ten years of volunteer leadership within the health care field through his work with the Vally Baptist Health System, where he shared his faith in Christ’s love by bringing improved delivery of health services to the people of South  Texas and northern Mexico. Serving on the Valley Baptist Board since 1994, and as Chairman of the Valley Baptist Health System Board since its inception in 2001, he held a position on all subsidiary boards within the System. His outreach through the health care field included service on the  Texas Hospital Trustees Foundation Board, chairing the  Texas Baptist General Convention’s Nominations Committee for Institutional Boards for Valley Baptist, and as the first person from South  Texas to be appointed to the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board. According to Jim Springfield, Presdient and CEO of Valley Baptist Health System, "Wes Lepard has made a lasting contribution to health care in South  Texas and throughout our state. His legacy at Valley Baptist is unprecedented and will long be enjoyed by our community."

Wes was active in Christian service through his membership in First Baptist Church of Harlingen, where he was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and member of the budget committee.

He will be remembered as well as an avid golfer and hunter.

Born in 1943 to parents Evon and Ruby Lepard, Wes was a graduate of Mississippi State University where he earned a degree in Engineering and did graduate work in environmental protection, hazardous waste handling, recovery, and utilization. After working with the Packard Electric Division of General Motors for ten years, and as part owner of KLH/LVI for three years, Wes and his wife, Doris, moved to the Valley and founded Magnolia International Corporation in 1992 to assist companies throughout the world in relocation to this border region.

Wes is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Doris Rigby Lepard, and devoted daughters Tommi Jo Hurt and her husband, the Reverend Dr. Bill Hurt, and their children Laura Jo and Melanie Hurt of Natchez, Mississippi; Cassie Stanteen and her husband, the Reverend Kenny Stanteen and their children Madeline and Emma Grace Stanteen of Grand Prairie,  Texas; his sister Marjorie Culpepper and husband Jim Culpepper of Memphis, Tennessee; Doris’ brother Jimmy Rigby and his wife Ina Rigby and Doris’ sister-in-law, Jean Rigby, all of Kosciusko, Mississippi; and many dear relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 13, from 1 to 9 o’clock, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 in the evening.

Memorial services will take place at First Baptist Church, Harlingen, at 10 in the morning on Wednesday, April 14, followed by burial in the family’s hometown of Kosciusko, Mississippi on April 15, 2004.

Pallbearers will be Wilbron Stanteen, Greg Gibson, Tip Johnston, Ben Mckibbens, Jim Springfield, Randy McLelland, Tom Coyle, and Russell SoRell.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Board Members of the Valley Baptist Health System and Deacons at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen.

The family suggests that those wishing to do so may consider sharing Wes’ dream of improved health care to residents of our region by making a memorial donation to the Valley Baptist Foundation, P.O. Box 2588, Harlingen,  Texas 78551-9982, or by honoring his life of service to his church through a donation to First Baptist Church, 501 E. Van Buren, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Fred R. Jacobs

SAN BENITO — Fred R. Jacobs went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 10, 2004, at the age of 78. He was known as Jake to his bowling buddies. He resided in San Benito for the last 16 years.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Floyd H. and Dorothy Jacobs; his brothers, James Jacobs, Robert Jacobs, and Vernon Jacobs; his sisters, Naomi Jacobs and Ruth Jacobs.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Jacobs of San Benito, TX; his sons, Charles R. Jacobs of Los Fresnos and George H. Jacobs of San Benito; his daughters, Linda (Frank) Garza of San Benito, Jennifer (Butch Lusk) Jacobs of Fort Worth, and Nancy Jacobs of San Benito, TX; one brother, Floyd Jacobs of Baltimore, Maryland.

Visitation is today from 5 p.m. till 9 p.m. at Trinity Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Cecil Cowley, Frank Garza III, Fred Martinez, Jimmy Aguilar, George Short and Lee Almendarez.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at Borderland Church, 299 East Heywood Street in San Benito with Pastor Dwayne Sperman officiating. Visitation will continue at the church starting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday till time of service. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 S. F Street, Harlingen, TX.

Cosme Posada

Primera — Cosme Posada, 92, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on Friday, April 9, 2004.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maximina; two daughters, Francisca (Lupe) Gonzales from Milan, TN, Enedina (Joe) P. Valenzuela from Houston; four sons, Guadalupe (Sylvia) Posada, Armando (Yolanda) Posada, Federico (Elena) Posada, and Rafael (Maria) Posada all from Primera; one brother, Victoriano Posada; 32 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Cosme was a native of Primera for 57 years and was married to his loving wife, Maximina, for 74 years. The love we have for our father will always live in our hearts.

Pallbearers will be members of the family.

Visitation will be held at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home on Monday, April 12, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m.

Father Richard, SS.CC., will celebrate Funeral Mass at Queen of Peace Catholic Church at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park.

Funeral Services are under the direction of Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.

Tomas G. Salazar

SAN BENITO, TX — Tomas G. Salazar, 89, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center. He was born in San Benito, Tx. and resided there all his life.

He was a Veteran of World War II and felt very proud to have served his Country. He liked to work in his yard and grow plants to distribute among his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by sisters-in-law: Genoveva Montemayor Rodriguez and Maria "Mary" Salazar and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Andres and Dominga Galvan Salazar; brothers, Jose Rodriguez, Vicente Rodriguez and Tiburcio Salazar and his sisters, Tomasita Lopez, Juanita S. Gonzales and Trinidad Mares.

Visitation was held Friday April 9, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home.

Services will be held at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday April 10, 2004.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park with military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 205 and V.F.W. Post 2410.

Pallbearers will be Antonio "Tony" Rodriguez, Cipriano Galvan, Adrian Salazar, Roberto Lopez, Tomas Mares, and Juan Manuel Gonzalez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.
