Leon M. Hinkley, Jr.

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Leon Merritt Hinkley, Jr., 76, entered into the loving hands of the Lord on Monday, July 21, 2003 at his residence in Los Fresnos, TX.

Visitation will be held on Friday , July 25, 2003 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Buena Vista Funeral Home in Brownsville,  Texas.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 26, 2003 10 a.m. at Buena Vista Funeral Home with Reverend George Morrison officiating.

Leon was born on August 31, 1926 in Brownsville to Leon and Helen Hinkley.

He is survived by a brother, James Coulter Hinkley of Leaguue City,  Texas; brother-in-law, Wendell Moody of Canyon Lake,  Texas; 3 nephews and 1 niece.

He graduated from  Texas A&I college in 1947 with a BA degree. Sonny, as he was known, worked at Los Fresnos State Bank for 50 years prior to retirement. He served as Sunday School superintendent at Los Fresnos Baptist Church and spent countless hours volunteering in community affairs and charitable organizations of which he enjoyed very much.

In lieu of flowers, a Mr. Hinkley Memorial fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank, 203 N. Arroyo Blvd., Los Fresnos,  Texas 78566 for The Cameron County Children’s Advocacy.

James Coulter Hinkley

LEAGUE CITY — James Coulter Hinkley, 75, of League City went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 23, 2003. He was born on August 29, 1928 in Brownsville, TX.

He is survived by his fiancée, Mary Kerr of Pearland; daughter Linda Mann; son Chris Hinkley both of League City; 2 grandchildren, Shelby and Dustin Mann.

Jimmy retired from Unisys and was an active member of many senior citizens groups in our community.

Visitation was held on Sunday, September 28, 2003 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Jack Rowe Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, September 29, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Jack Rowe Funeral Home, 1625 East Main St., League City, TX 77573, 281-332-1571.

Jose Cruz

PORT ISABEL, TX — Jose Cruz went to be with the Lord July 22, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen TX. He had lived in Chicago, IL and Port Isabel most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his children, Elidoro Cruz, Miguel Cruz, Merced Cruz.

He is survived by his wife, Isabel Cruz of Port Isabel; his sons and daughters, Maria Cruz (Saul Antonio Losoya) of Matamoros, Carlos (Maria De La Cruz) of Port Isabel, Guadalupe Vega of Chicago, Francisco Cruz of Chicago, Praxedis Galant (George) Chicago, Jose D. Cruz (Rosa) Harlingen, Raymundo (Cruz) Cruz of Port Isabel, Elvira Cruz of Houston, Amparo Solis (Antonio) of Chicago, Carmen Gonzalez (Jose) of Cicero IL, Pabla (Antonio) Herrera of Chicago, Esperanza Salinas (Raymundo) Chicago, Leticia (Mario) Mariadinga of Houston. He had 50 grandchildren and numerous great–grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 24, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral Service will be Friday, July 25, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Lirio de los Valles, 732 W Curtis in Harlingen TX with Rev. Feliciano Guzman officiating. Burial will follow to Heavenly Grace Memorial Park.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapels.

Elia Martinez Muniz

HARLINGEN, TX — Elia Martinez Muniz, age 61, passed away, Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.

She had battled a courageous struggle with cancer for some time and is now resting peacefully with the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Agustin V. Martinez and Guadalupe Ledesma Martinez.

Survivors include sons, Ofelio (Sonny) Muniz III of Brownsville, Ronald Mark Muniz (Karen) of Lake Charles, LA and Christopher David Muniz (Mayra) of Edinburg; grandchildren, Derek Andrew Muniz of Sealy, TX and Emily Meagan Muniz of Lake Charles, LA; one brother, Agustin (Gus) Martinez (Francis) of San Antonio; four sisters, Elva De La Rosa (the late Manuel) of Harlingen, Edna Longoria (Sam) of Brownsville, Glendora De Leon (Amador) of Austin, and Dorothy L. Martinez of Springfield, MO; special friend and companion, Eliseo Martinez; former husband Ofelio Muniz Jr.; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial visitation will be held today, Wednesday, July 23, 2003, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Memorial Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Inurnment of cremated remains will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen,  Texas.

Kathryn K. Driscoll

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX — Kathryn K. Driscoll, 78, passed away Friday at Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville, TX

She had lived in South Padre Island since 1965 and previously lived in Harlingen,

She was a member of Our Lady Star Of The Sea Catholic Church in South Padre Island, TX.

Survivor is a sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Donald Mulkerne of Delmar, New York, seven nieces and nephews, and nineteen great nieces and nephews.

Services will be at Our Lady Star Of The Sea Catholic Church in South Padre Island at 11 a.m. on Monday July 21, with Father Robert Vreteau officiating.

Interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 20, from 1-5 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Riley De Leon

MERCEDES, TX — Riley De Leon, 71, passed away Thursday at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Petra C. De Leon of Mercedes; four sons, Jorge De Leon, Riley De Leon, III, Juan Carlos De Leon, Alejandro De Leon all of Mercedes; four daughters, Lilia Flores, Claudia De Leon, Ana Laura De Leon all of Mercedes, Estela Rosales of Nuevo Progreso, Tamps; two brothers, Jose De Leon of Raymondville, Rey De Leon of Mercedes; a sister, Juanita Romero of Pharr; also surviving are 25 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Chapel services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home Of Mercedes.

Rudy C. de la Peña, Jr.

WESLACO, TX — Rudy C. de la Peña, Jr., 72, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2003.

"Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us." –Romans 5:5.

He was a Land Developer and Contractor who was responsible for the start of development at  Texas Blvd. and Expressway 83 in Weslaco. He participated in many endeavors, including being a founding member of City National Bank in Weslaco.

He was preceded in death by his son, Adolfo de la Peña.

He is survived by his wife, Dalia de la Peña; his children, Linda Dominguez, Diana de la Peña, Erasmo (Malena) de la Peña, Cynthia (Raul) Cabaza, Delma De la Peña, Lisa de la Peña, Jaime (Brenda) de la Peña and Amy de la Peña. Also surviving him are his sister, Estela (Eduardo) Guerra; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be celebrated today, Friday, July 18, 2003 at 2 p.m. at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Serving as pallbearers will be Nick Dominguez, Joseph Dominguez, Joshua Cabaza, Erasmo de la Peña, Jr., Lupe Hinojosa, Jr. and Alberto (Beto) Guerra.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Agatha Perez Villarreal

HARLINGEN, TX — Agatha Perez Villarreal, 72, entered into rest on Monday.

Mrs. Villarreal is survived by her loving children, daughters Concepcion Casas of Edinburg, TX, San Juanita (Rev. Abel) Perez of Edinburg, TX, Dalinda Arenas, of Harlingen, TX, Diana (John) Nagle of San Benito, TX, Rosie (Rey) Ramirez of Harlingen, TX, sons Gonzalo (Dalia) Garcia, Jr., of San Antonio, TX, Ramiro (Maggie) Garcia of Harlingen, TX, Reynaldo Garcia of Idaho, 33 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, brother Guadalupe Perez of Galveston, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, July 16, 2003 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Spirit of Praise Church, located at Expressway 83 and Lewis Lane, with funeral services to be held at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Cemetery in La Feria, TX. Pallbearers will be Ramiro Garcia, Billy Nagle, Ernest Torovio, Randy Garcia, Rey. Ramirez, and Gonzalo Garcia.

Juanita C. De Los Santos

EL CALABOZ/SAN BENITO, TX — Juanita C. De Los Santos, 94, entered into rest on Sunday, July 13, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center.

She was born November 3, 1908 in San Benito,  Texas to Jose Cavazos and Inocente Garcia.

She loved flowers and enjoyed gardening, watching novelas, sewing and making quilts.

She is survived by her daughters, Inocente Stinson, Aurora Irving and Josefina Montemayor; son, Afredo De Los Santos, Jr.; 25 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alfredo De Los Santos, Sr.; daughter, Elma Redman; son, Alfonso De Los Santos; her parents, Jose and Inocente Garcia Cavazos; 5 sisters and 2 brothers.

Visitation will be held at the San Benito Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2003.

Funeral services will be held at St. Ignatuis Catholic Church in El Ranchito at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2003. Interment will follow to El Calaboz Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Emma Viola Jacobs

PENTIAS, TX — Emma Viola Jacobs, 92, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2003 at her residence. She was born on October 5, 1910 in La Creek, South Dakota.

She lived her life in South Dakota until the fall of 2000 when she moved to her present residence in Penitas. Mrs. Jacobs was a retired school teacher and historian.

She is survived by her husband, Lee; daughters Yvonne Gilmore and Lealla Fisher and their husbands Donald and Terry; granddaughters Kathleen Reynolds and Elizabeth Pondek and her husband Jeff; grandsons Brian and wife Josie and Kevin Abernathy; great-grandchildren, Amber, Benjamin, and Jonathan Reynolds, Sarah Nicholas and Marissa Abernathy. She will be especially missed by her caretaker and nieces, Theresa Solis, Brenda Pena, Tanya Ochoa, Connie Pesterkot; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Rosa and George Ruff; sisters Alberta Powell and Martha Ruff; brothers George Ruff Jr., and Spencer Ruff.

She was a member of the St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church in Martin, South Dakota. No local services. Interment will be in Martin, South Dakota.

L & I Funeral Home of Penitas are in charge of funeral arrangements.

Gerth Inez Hancock

HARLINGEN — Getha Inez Hancock, 82, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2003 at a local nursing center in Harlingen, TX.

Inez was born on December 3, 1920 in Atwood, OK. She was a former resident of Dallas,  Texas and Comanche, TX and then had recently moved to Harlingen.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Comanche, TX.

Survivors include her husband, Marcus A. Hancock; step-daughters, Marcia Bopp (Irv) of Columbia, TN and Elaine Lockhart (Tom) of Harlingen, TX; brother, Feldon Parham (Helen) of Duncan, OK; grandchildren, Michael (Suzanne) Dransfield of Dallas, TX, Dedra Dransfield of Columbia, TN, Kevin (JoAnna) Dransfield of Columbia, TN, Leslie (Lee) Hollon of Harlingen, Tal Lockhart of Harlingen; 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Harlingen, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003 with Rev. David Reed officiating.

Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Tom Lockhart, Tal Lockhart, Lee Hollon, Gus Farias, Rolando Pena, and Michael Dransfield.

Arrangements are under the care of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
