Oliver Bergschneider

HARLINGEN, TX — Oliver H. Bergschneider, 88, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas. He was born on June 8, 1915 in Levasy, Missouri.

Oliver married Zola Barksdale in 1938 and they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October. He had been a member of the Buckner, Missouri Masonic Lodge #501 for over 53 years, a member of the American Legion Post #499 in Blue Springs, MO and a member of the United Church of Chirst in Levasy, MO. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1980 after a long career as a Safety Engineer for Farmers Insurance Group and then he and his wife moved permanently to Harlingen in 1994.

He leaves his wife Zola; two children, daughter, Karen Crow and her husband, Allen of Rockwall,  Texas; and son, Ron Bergschneider and his wife, Donna of Levasy, MO; three grandchildren, their spouses and children, Scott (Dawn), Brooke and Brenna Flucke of Wichita, KS, Robin (Sean), Sean Michael and Ryan Sales of Grain Valley, MO, and Chris (Cindy) Gage and Lane Bergschneider also of Grain Valley, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and older brother, and a younger sister.

There will be no local services.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Memory of Oliver H. Bergschneider, payable to the Ebenezer United Church of Christ, Memorial Fund, Levasy, MO 64066.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Sabrina Guadalupe Garcia

RIO HONDO, TX — On June 29, 2003, Sabrina Guadalupe Garcia went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a battle with lupus.

Sabrina was born on June 10, 1975 in Harlingen,  Texas. She attended school in Rio Hondo,  Texas and moved to Fresno, California in March of 1990.

She is survived by her mother, Sally Garcia of Fresno, California; her father, George Garcia Sr. of Rio Hondo,  Texas; her twin sister, Georgina Garcia; and brothers, George Jr. and Mark Garcia.

Funeral services were held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Fresno, California on July 3, 2003.

Although we will miss Sabrina’s beautiful and loving smile we are at peace knowing she is in a better place where there is no suffering and pain.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Funeral Services Serenity in Fresno, California.

Juanita C. Castro

RIO HONDO, TX — Juanita C. Castro, 79, entered into the Lord’s Kingdom on July 8, 2003.

She was born on December 6, 1923 at La Jaretada Ranch east of Lozano,  Texas.

She resided in Lozano most of her life, however, recently relocated and retired in Rio Hondo. She was employed with the Cameron–Willacy Community Projects for 23 years; and after her retirement at the age of 72, she worked as a companion with the Senior Companionship Program.

She was a member of the "Mission Bautista" Baptist Church in Rio Hondo,  Texas.

Some of her hobbies included, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling, site-seeing, gardening, quilting, sewing, reading the bible, romance novels, watching novelas, and especially working with her Head Start children.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Emilio and Marcela Cortez; brothers, Ernesto Cortez, Felipe Cortez, Pedro Cortez; and two sisters, Virginia Alaniz and Emilia Villarreal.

She is survived by 7 children, Maria Luisa Padilla (Ernesto), Marcela Albers (Dennis), San Juanita Davila (Gaudalupe), Arturo Castro (Maria), Marta Cruz (Jorge), Gilberto Castro (Connie) and Carlos Castro.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Wanda  Jones Garcia, Christopher Jones, Jose Luis Padilla, Dennis Albers II, Kristy Metzaer, Romelia Victoria Todd, Fernando Robledo, Giselle Castro, Arturo Castro IV, Jorge Cruz, Jr., Marisela Delgado, Leticia Mata, Gilberto Castro, Jr., Carlos Castro, Jr., and Shawn Escamilla; 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gilberto Cortez (Soledad).

Visitation will be held today, July 10, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 11, 2003 with a 10 a.m. funeral service at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home with Pastor Feliciano Rivera officiating of Rio Hondo Baptist Mission.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Beatrice G. Garza

LOS FRESNOS/SAN BENITO, TX — Beatrice G. Garza, 76, passed away July 7, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center. She was born January 20, 1927 in San Benito, TX and had lived in Los Fresnos.

In 1987 she retired as Director of food services after 40 years of service with the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District. She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos, TX. Beatrice Garza was a native of Los Fresnos, TX for 76 years and was married to Carlos R. Garza for 56 years until his death. She was a devoted mother and dearly loved her grandchildren. Her 40 years of service to the Los Fresnos CISD touched the lives of so many children. Her family is the fourth generation of the San Carlos Estates in San Benito, TX. She will be missed but will remain in the hearts of her family and friends until eternity. Her legacy will be lived through her children and grandchildren. God Bless you Mom and may you rest in peace.

Beatrice Garza is survived by her children, Leonel G. Garza and Maria Elena (Nena) Silguero; three grandchildren, Carlos Owen Garza, Irma Estela Garza and William Charles Corkill. Beatrice Garza is also survived by her three sisters, Lilia Barter, Adela Barrera and Theresa Cantu; and by her two brothers, Ramon Gonzales, Jr. of San Antonio, TX and Manuel Gonzales of Austin, TX.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Carlos R. Garza; parents, Ramon and Estela Loza Gonzales; her sisters, Concepcion (Connie) Gonzales and Bertha Gonzales De La Paz; and by her brother, Roberto Gonzales.

Visitation will be held at the San Benito Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2003.

Funeral services will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 606 West Ocean Blvd in Los Fresnos, TX at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 10, 2003 with Father George Guillen officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Ramiro R. Barrera, Ronaldo R. Barrera, Ron R. Barrera, William C. Corkill, Carlos O. Garza and Oscar Gonzales.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito, TX.

Eleodoro Levrier

LA FERIA, TX — Eleodoro Levrier, was born in Brownsville, TX on August 23, 1914 to Fulgencio and Maria Otilia Levrier.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fulgencio Levrier, oldest son, Eleodoro Levrier, Jr., and a brother, Fulgencio Levrier, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Paula Tomelloso Levrier; brother, Alfredo Levrier of Corpus Christi; daughter-in-law, Olga Levrier of Huron, CA. Also surviving are his children, Guadalupe (Darlene) Levrier of Dixon, CA, Roberto (Oralia) Levrier, Luis (Eva) Levrier, Francisco (Mary) Levrier, Maria Otilia (Domingo) Castor all of La Feria,  Texas, Andres (Grace) Levrier of Austin,  Texas, Mary Jane Rivera of Angleton,  Texas, John (Belia) Levrier, George (Enedelia) Levrier and Maria (Ruben) Diaz of La Feria,  Texas. Also surviving Mr. Levrier are his 36 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel of Peace with a Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at 12:45 p.m. for a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Robert Levrier, Jr., Marcos Levrier, Steven James Levrier, Paul Anthony Caastor, Raul E. Rivera, Jr., and Ruben Roel Zambrano.

Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Levrier of Huron, CA., Michael Levrier of Dixon, CA., Andres Levrier, Jr., of Austin, TX and John Gregory Levrier, Jr of Wichita Falls, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in La Feria.

Welester Barron

MERCEDES — Welester Barron, 69, died early Sunday morning at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Dolores C. Barron of Mercedes; four sons, Oscar, Cesar and Victor Barron all of Mercedes and Welester Barron Jr. of Elsa; ten daughters, Leticia Gonzales of Nuevo Progreso Tamps. Mexico, Gloria Balderas, Olga L. Alvarez, Dora A. Barron, Diana P. Barron, San Juanita Barron, Mayra E. Barron, Brenda J. Barron all of Mercedes, Mirtha I. Mares of San Benito and Nelda A. Curtis of Killeen, TX.

Also surviving are two brothers, Antonio Barron of Weslaco and Sabas Barron of Mercedes; three sisters, Maria Rojas, Maria De Jesus Barron both of Mercedes and Virginia Lucio of Weslaco; and 35 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

John R. Dent

HARLINGEN — John R. Dent, 72, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2003 at his residence in Arroyo City. John was born on May 6, 1931 in Harlingen to A.O.C. & Pauline Dent who preceded him in death.

John was a lifelong resident of the Harlingen area. He was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Harlingen where the Sunday School Building is named in his father’s honor; member of the Harlingen Elk’s Lodge #1889; and a member of the American Legion Post #205. He also served, proudly, with the U. S. National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, San Juana Dent of Arroyo City; son John G. Dent of Los Fresnos; daughter Sharon Doucet of Harlingen; step-son Carlos Ernest Charles of Arroyo City; brother Paul Dent of Kennedy, TX; and sister Evelyn Dent of San Antonio.

A memorial service will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 2 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2003. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Maria A. (Guzman) Chapa

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria A. (Guzman) Chapa, 89, entered into rest on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at a local nursing home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Chapa was born June 12, 1914 in San Benito,  Texas.

She is survived by her children, Regina G. (Armando) Lucio of Harlingen, TX, Rodolfo V. (Aurora) Guzman of Las Cruces, NM, Juan (Karen) Guzman of Corvallis, OR, Pete (Phylis) Guzman, Jr. of Delano, MN, Margarita G. Perez of San Antonio, TX, Crespin (Mary) Guzman of Austin, TX and Antonio (Tina) Guzman of Carrizo Springs, TX; 31 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Rodolfo Gonzales of Chicago, IL; sisters, Maria G. Perez of Corpus Christi, TX, Elida G. Trevino of San Benito, TX and Aurora G. Arredondo of San Benito, TX.

She was preceded in death by Pedro Guzman in 1971 and Lupe Chapa in 1997.

Visitation was held on Thursday, July 3, 2003 at San Benito Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be held today, Friday, July 4, 2003 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Roberto Lucio, Ricardo Lucio, Peter Ryan Guzman, Jaime Guzman, T.J. Guzman and Paul Michael Guzman. Honorary pallbearers will be Rosalinda Lucio and Jacinto Perez.

The family of Maria Chapa would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff of Twinbrooke South Nursing Home for all their loving care the past few years.

Conrad R. (Bob) Dietz

BAYVIEW, TX — Conrad R. (Bob) Dietz, age 90, entered into eternal rest on June 29, 2003, at his residence in Bayview,  Texas. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and all who knew him.

Conrad was born in Port Arthur,  Texas, on February 6, 1913. He was a SGT with the Houston Police Department, an Elder at St. Paul Lutheran Church where he also taught adult bible classes. He was a town Alderman for the City of Bayview, and was an avid fisherman.

He served with the Houston Police Department from August 1944 to April 1977 when he retired. He became an Investigator on May 16, 1971, and became SGT on December 1, 1954. He was the second oldest retiree having served with the Houston Police Department.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Maurine S. Dietz, who passed away on May 18, 2003; son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. Frederic H. (Kay) Dietz, U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his daughter, Rev. Dr. Evelyn D. (Edward) Morris of Bayview,  Texas; five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home, 2906 S. Expressway 77/83, Harlingen,  Texas.

Funeral services will be held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Harlingen on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 3 p.m. with Pastor William Reagan, and Pastor Wade Payton officiating. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston,  Texas.

Chaplain Ed Davis, and the retired Houston Police Officers Association will conduct Police Honor Guard and the presentation of the  Texas Flag.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St. Paul Lutheran School, 1920  Washington, St. Harlingen,  Texas, 78520. 956-423-3924.

All funeral services are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Winnie G. Jones

BIRMINGHAM, AL/WESLACO, TX — Winnie G. Jones, 85, passed away in Birmingham, Alabama on June 29, 2003.

Graveside services and interment will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Wesalco.

Geraldine La Von Bottorff Fisher

HARLINGEN — Mrs. Jeri Fisher died at Harlingen Medical Center of heart and lung complications. She was born on October 23, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas the daughter of Ralph and Inez Bottorff and stepchild of Elmer "Doc" Bottorff. She married for the first time in 1951 and divorced in 1973 to Norman Blair  Taylor of Deltaville, Virginia. She married David W. Fisher, Sr. in 1976 in Pierre, South Dakota and traveled the U. S. with Dave’s work in Fish and Wildlife. In 1980 the happy couple settled in the Rio Grande Valley and ended up in Harlingen.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and the U. S. Army, Department of Army Intelligence. She was a great dancer, shopper, wife and mother. Her favorite food was sandwiches made with pickles.

She lived in Caldwell, Ks; Japan; Deltaville, VA; Pierre, SD; Fergus Falls, MN, Brownsville, TX and Harlingen, TX.

She is survived by her husband David Fisher of Harlingen; children Terry Taylor, Jan Taylor, Gary Fisher and David Fisher; twin brother, Gerald Bottorff; great-aunts Mable Pierce, Mary Fry, Jenny Ward and Maxine Railey; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and many friends.

Memorial service will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at 2 p.m. with Rev. David Mann officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or charity of ones choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
