Gloria Escobedo Alvarez

SAN BENITO — Gloria Escobedo Alvarez, 52, entered into rest on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center. Gloria was born September 6, 1950 in San Benito,  Texas to Ernestina V. and Arturo R. Escobedo. She was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church.

She is survived by her daughter Eva Teresa "Terry" Alvarez (Rene); her mother Ernestina V. Escobedo; her siblings, Santos E.A. (Ron) George of Harrisburg, PA, Emilia Escobedo of Denton, TX, Arturo Escobedo of San Benito, Norma A. (Leo) Longoria of La Feria, Rosalinda E. (Justin) Reaves of Houston, TX and Ida E. (David) Arellano of San Antonio, TX; nieces and nephews Ruth Ann Alicia, Rosita Alicia, Alfredo Escobedo, Cindy Escobedo, Jessica and Janis Escobedo, Tanya, Patricia and Elisa Longoria, Arturo and Samantha Jimenez, Stephanie Escobedo and Mindy Arellano.

Gloria was preceded in death by her father Arturo R. Escobedo, her daughter Ana Elisa Alvarez, and her brother Samuel Escobedo.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 16, 2003 at San Benito Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. both nights.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Rene Estrada, Arturo Jimenez, Leonel Longoria, David Arellano, Justin Reaves, Carlos Rodriguez, and Joe Rubio.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito, TX.

George Calvin Haynes

HARLINGEN — George Calvin Haynes, 82, was called by our Lord on June 13, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born on July 8, 1920 in Stuart Place, TX and moved to Harlingen as a young man, living there most of his life.

George worked as a short wave tower technician; he retired to his hobbies. He was a charter member of Smash Remote Control Club, and a member of the Academy of Aeronautics Association.

George leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and very close friends. He will be deeply missed.

Graveside services will be held on Monday June 16, 2003 at the Combes Cemetery.

Angela Leal Robles

RIO HONDO — Angela Leal Robles, 87, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Retama Manor Nursing Home. She was born at Rancho El Fresnal in San Benito, TX and lived in the San Benito and Rio Hondo area all her life. She was a housewife, and member of the Trinidad Assembly of God Church in Rio Hondo.

Mrs. Robles was a loving Mother and Grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, also by many friends and relatives. Her memory will be always in our hearts and we know she is in God’s Hands.

The Robles family would like to give a special thanks to the Family Practice Residency Program and the Doctors and Staff for their care; also to Retama Manor Nursing Home. A special thanks to Nurse Amabeli Gonzales of Valley Baptist Hospice.

Mrs. Robles is survived by her children Sabas (Gollita) Robles of Rio Hondo, Andres (Dalia) Robles of San Benito, Ezequiel (Aurora) Robles of Rio Hondo, Baldemar Robles of San Benito, Esther (Eleazar) Guajardo of Rio Hondo, and Maria Magdalena Garza of San Benito; 27 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Robles was preceded in death by her husband, Ygnacio Robles in 1964 and her son and daughter, Ygnacio Robles Jr. and Petrita Robles in 1955.

Visitation will be held Sunday June 15, 2003 from 1p.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with Prayer services both nights at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.

Services will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Trinidad Assembly of God Church in Rio Hondo at 2 p.m. with Pastor Lazaro Olive officiating.

Entombment will be at Mont Meta Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be Eleazar Guajardo Jr., Rollen Alaniz, David Carlos Gracia, Ryan Lee Garcia, David Castro Jr., and Aroldo Garza Jr.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Zella Cockrell

RIO HONDO, TX — Zella Cockrell, a long time resident of Rio Hondo, went to be with her Lord on June 5, 2003, after a lengthy illness. Zella was born on March 7, 1932 in Deumright,  Oklahoma. She was the fourth of five children born to Floyd and Zelma (Hurst) Alexander. Zella moved to Rio Hondo in 1951 and was married to Elbert Cockrell on September 25, 1951 in Rio Hondo where Elbert was a farmer.

In the year between 1953 and 1975 she traveled with her husband and five children throughout the Midwest as Elbert worked doing pipeline construction, retiring in Rio Hondo in 1975.

Zella is survived by two sisters, Elsie Henshaw of  Oklahoma and Leona (Gerald) McGlauchen of North Carolina. She is also survived by four children, Jane Alexander of Harlingen, Gary (Viviana) Cockrell of Rio Hondo, Danny (Jennifer) Cockrell of New Braunfels, Rhonda (Brian) Herron of Lockhart; daughter-in-law, Kathy Cockrell of New Braunfels, Rhonda (Brian) Herron of Lockhart; daughter-in-law, Kathy Cockrell, of Castroville; fifteen grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Zella was preceded in death by her parents, one sister: Marie West and one brother: Luther Alexander, who was killed in France during World War II. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elbert, in May, 2000 and her son, Harold Cockrell, September 1999.

The family will receive visitors at Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito, on Saturday, June 7, 2003, from 12 noon until 9 p.m. Graveside services will be on Sunday, June 8, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Rio Hondo Community Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home on Bowie St, in San Benito, TX.

John Lee Thompson

DONNA, TX — John Lee Thompson, 41, a lifelong resident of Donna, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2001. John was born November 13, 1959 to Delos and Vera Ruth (Spears) Thompson. He was grandson to A.M. Thompson founder of the Thompson Dairy Farm in Donna, TX. John also helped develop the Don-Wes Flea Market between Donna and Weslaco.

John is survived by his father and mother, Delos and Vera Ruth Thompson of Donna; his brother, Jim Thompson of Donna; nieces and nephews, Kimberly Ann Thompson, Jason Ray Thompson and Debra Lee Thompson. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Carol Thompson and an aunt Eunice Thompson of Donna.

John is preceded in death by his uncle, Roy L. Thompson (1988).

Visitation is today, Thursday, February 8, 2001 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2001 at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco with Reverend Jim McWilliams, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Donna as the officiant. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.

Those who wish may make donations to the charity of their choice.

Vera Ruth Thompson

DONNA,TX — Vera Ruth Thompson, 83, passed away June 3, 2003 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

Vera, along with her husband, Delos Thompson, owned and operated Thompson Dairy Farms in Donna and also opened the Don-Wes Flea Market.

Vera is survived by her husband of 50 years, Delos Thompson of Donna; a son, Jim Thompson of Pharr; grandchildren, Kimberly Thompson, Jason Thompson, Debbie Sifuentes and a great-grandson, Cristiano Sifuentes. Also surviving her is a sister-in-law, Carol Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her son, John Lee Thompson in 2001 and her sisters, Isabel Clouser and Katherine Berry.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, June 6, 2003 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel at 900 W. 4th St. in Weslaco.

Graveside services and entombment will be held Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco with the Rev. Chris Voss, Associate Ministerof the First Christian Church in Weslaco, as the officiant.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Leonor S. Guizar

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Leonor Sauceda Guizar, 75, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2003 in Raymondville,  Texas. She was born on January 6, 1928 to Juan and Eluteria in Sinton,  Texas. Mrs. Guizar, was a lifelong resident of Raymondville.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Miguel Guizar of Raymondville; daughters, Dina (Carlos) Moreno, McAllen, Criselda Guizar, McAllen, Elizabeth (Gerardo) Valenzuela, Dallas, Deborah (Robert) Castro, San Antonio; sons, Miguel Jr. (Annette) Guizar, Tempe, AZ and Eduardo (Aida) Guizar, Mission; brother Clemente (Francisca) Sauceda, Deming, New Mexico; and sister Isabel Ramirez, Raymondville; grandchildren 13 and great grandchildren 4.

Mrs. Guizar was a member of the "La Luz Del Mundo" church enjoyed and participated in several church activities. Her many friends and church worshipers will truly miss their faithful friend.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 5, 2003 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Hernandez Funeral Chapel.

Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2003. Funeral Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. at Hernandez Funeral Chapel with Rev. Celso Martinez officiating the service. Interment will follow at Raymondville Memorial Park in Raymondville,  Texas.

Pallbearers will be Miguel Jr. Guizar, Eduardo Guizar, Eddie L. Guizar, Carlos Moreno, Robert Castro, Jerry Valenzuela, Joshua Barrajas, and Ramiro Ramirez.

The family would like to thank Willacy County Sheriff’s Office, Willacy County Ems, Raymondville Fire Department and Hernandez Funeral Home Staff for all their help during the loss of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hernandez Funeral Home in Raymondville.

Patsy Avila Guajardo

SAN BENITO, TX — Patsy Avila Guajardo, 52, entered into rest on Saturday.

Patsy was a registered nurse for 24 years. She worked at Dameron Hospital in Stockton, California for 16 years, before moving to La Feria, TX, and working at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX and other Valley hospitals.

Patsy is survived by her husband, Rafael Guajardo; mother, Lydia Avila of Stockton, CA; father, Guadalupe Avila; daughter, Sonia Ann Avila; son, David Guajardo; brothers, Arthur and Mario Avila; sisters, Diana Avila and Dalila Delphin all of Stockton, CA. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, June 4, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Thursday, June 5, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. funeral service at the Abundant Life Church with Pastor Joseph Plata officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Rafael Guajardo, Jeremy Delphin, Arthur Avila, Mario Avila, Rick Ramirez and Frank Castellanos.

Patsy has a Heart of Gold, with unconditional Love for everyone. She loved nursing and Life itself. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Francisco (Frank) Posas

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Francisco (Frank) Posas, 50, passed away Friday, May 30, 2003. He was born August 20, 1952 at Raymondville,  Texas to Senon and Juanita (Gutierrez) Posas.

Frank was preceded in death by his father and loving sister, Mary Posas.

He is survived by his mother, Juanita Posas of San Perlita; one daughter, Dalyn Posas Ruiz of Brownsville; three sons, Francisco Posas Jr. of Los Fresnos, Ryan Chance Ray Posas and Stetson Cody Posas both of Kingsville; two brothers, Johnny Posas of Raymondville, Jose Posas of Woodsboro; and two sisters, Virginia Hunter of Harlingen, and Lenor Nieto of San Perlita. Also surviving is one grandson, Frank (Trey) Posas III and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville with burial to follow at the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home, Raymondville,  Texas. 956-689-2151.

Raul P. Saldaña

SAN BENITO — Raul P. Saldaña, 87 of San Benito,  Texas was called to the kingdom of God on Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center.

He was born on March 25, 1916 in San Benito,  Texas to Juan and Gregoria P. Saldaña.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Beatriz (Ramirez) Saldaña. The couple was married on July 4, 1941 and raised nine children: Raul Jr., (Tina) Saldaña from Weslaco, Minerva (Willie) Rosales from San Benito, Ray (Mary Lour) Saldaña from San Benito, Robert (Diana) Saldaña from San Antonio, Hilda (Ramiro) Partida from San Benito, Yolanda (Paul) Hernandez from San Antonio, Norma Saldaña from Brownsville, Richard (Linda) Saldaña from San Benito and Ruben Saldaña from San Benito. Also surviving him is a brother Jose Saldaña from Lyford and two nieces Consuelo Garza and Maria Saldaña from San Benito.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Anita S. Garza, and a brother Simon Saldaña.

Mr. Saldaña was one of the original pioneers of the migrant movement from San Benito. This position he held for over 40 years. Upon retiring from this position he worked for four years for the Cameron County maintance department.

Mr. Saldaña is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed by all who loved him dearly.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the San Benito Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Church in San Benito.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
