Robert Lee "Bob" Tracy

KERRVILLE / LA FERIA, TX — Mr. Robert Lee "Bob" Tracy, age 66, passed away May 24, 2003, at his home in Kerrville,  Texas.

He was born September 25, 1936 , in La Feria,  Texas to Frances and Lee F. Tracy. He married Dorothy Allen October 12, 1970 in Temple,  Texas.

Bob is a graduate of La Feria High School and the University of  Texas in Austin with a BBA in 1960. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kerrville.

Bob is preceded in death by his father, Lee Tracy of La Feria; his first wife, Carrie Emhoff Tracy of Michigan; and their daughter, Pamela Tracy Hickman of Pearland,  Texas.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Frances Tracy of La Feria; his wife, Dorothy A. Tracy of Kerrville; and his daughter, Patricia Tracy Pulley (and husband James) of Paris,  Texas; and two step-daughters, Carolyn Settle (and husband David Settle) of Austin,  Texas; Sharon Roberts (and husband Skip Roberts) of McKinney,  Texas; and five grandchildren, Joshua, Rachael, and Sarah Hickman of Pearland,  Texas; and Parks and Madison Settle of Austin.

Funeral services were officiated by Reverend Warren Hornburg of the First United Methodist Church in Kerrville,  Texas. Interment was at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Grimes Funeral Home in Kerrville,  Texas. (830) 257-4544.

Irene B. Marsalis

SAN BENITO, TX — Irene Bennett Marsalis, born November 21, 1907 in Orange,  Texas went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 29, 2003.

Irene completed nurse’s training at the Methodist Hospital in Houston,  Texas. She was night supervisor at the Dolly Vinsant Memorial Hospital in San Benito for over 20 years, and also worked at Mercy Hospital in Brownsville and at the Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen.

She came to the Valley with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Bennett, when she was an infant. She could tell stories about the bandits that roamed the Valley in the early 1900’s and how her family coped with the dangers they faced.

She had spent the last four years of her life in the home of her granddaughter and family, Donna and Larry Holloway, of San Benito and in the Retama Nursing Home in Harlingen.

Mrs. Marsalis is survived by her daughter-in-law, Molly Marsalis of Corpus Christi and daughters, Dorothy (Jim)  Jefferson of Springfield, VA, Billie (Bill) Macy of Montgomery, TX, Claudine (Harley) Shofner of Jacksonville, FL, Frances Weise of San Benito; son, Joel (Laura) Marsalis of Baytown; brother, Charles (Doris) Bennett of San Benito and 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan W. Marsalis, Sr.; son, Dan W. Marsalis, Jr.; grandsons, Sam Marsalis and Mark  Jefferson and her great granddaughter, Holly Holloway.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 1, 2003, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel at 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito. A memorial service will also be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 1, 2003 at the Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church, 2120 Ed Carey, Harlingen.

Graveside services will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park at 10 a.m., Monday, June 2, 2003.

Mrs. Marsalis was a member of the Baptist Temple Church in San Benito. She was well known in San Benito for her extensive collection of antique dolls. She will be remembered as a compassionate, loving mother, grandmother and nurse. Memorial donations may be made to the Baptist Temple Church in San Benito.

Thomae Funeral Home, Bowie St., San Benito are entrusted with these funeral arrangements.

Joanna J. Briones & Angelica P. Briones

MERCEDES, TX — Joanna J. Briones, 14, passed away Monday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen; Angelica P. Briones, 17, passed away Tuesday at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

They are survived by their parents Reymundo and Maria Guadalupe Briones of Mercedes; three brothers, Reymundo Javier Briones, Juan Carlos Briones, Eduardo Briones all of Mercedes; their paternal grandparents, Patricio and Raquel Briones of Weslaco; their maternal grandfather, Jose Luis Antillon of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Also surviving are her uncles and aunts, Domingo (Becky) Briones, David (Irene) Briones of Mercedes; Juan (Elizabeth) Briones, Valentin (Frances) Briones of Dallas; Felix (Margaret) Briones of Houston; Ignacio Antillon of Indiana, Maria (Fidencio) Aguirre, Francisco (Maria De la Luz) Antillon, Petra (Cayetano) Rosales of California, Amalia (Nicolas) Reyes of Indiana, Juan (Rosario) Antillon of Mexico. They are also survived by numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes.

Interment will follow at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Dr. Vicente Dalberto Briones

SANTA ROSA, TX — Dr. Vicente "Beau" Dalberto Briones Pharm.D.Rph., 27, entered into rest on August 1, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

Beau attended Santa Rosa Elementary School and Middle School. In 1993 he graduated from the Science and Math Academy in Mercedes; he also attended  Texas A&I University in Kingsville for 2 years and in May of 2001 he graduated with his Doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of  Texas in Austin. During his years at UT-Austin, Beau made the Dean’s list many semesters.

Beau was an avid soccer, racquetball, and an excellent chess player, and he enjoyed playing pool and golf. When he was 13 years of age, his team won the state champion in soccer. During his UT years, Beau’s racquetball team placed 2nd at the National level. Beau was an excellent public speaker who needed few notes and no microphone; he was also an excellent in mathematics and computers and had a very good time in the process. In 1991, Joe Rios, Alicia Badillo, Yvette Flores and Beau were selected by St. Mary’s Catholic Church to attend the National Youth Catholic Conference to see the Pope in Denver, CO. When he was told of his prognosis, Beau’s philosophy was "to live everyday to fullest as if it were my last."

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents William Henry and Alvina Handy, paternal grandparents Erasmo, Sr., and Tomasita Briones, two uncles, Vicente and Pete Briones and a cousin Dr. Maria Alicia Ovalle.

He is survived by his parents, Erasmo, Jr., and Tina Briones of Santa Rosa, one brother, Erasmo "Dude" Briones III of Edinburg, a very special friend who never left his side, Liza Lopez of Santa Rosa, and his one and only favorite nephew Daniel Salazar Briones of La Sara. He is also survived by three uncles, Julian Briones (Delia) of Santa Rosa, Juan Briones (Viviana) of Bluetown, Alberto Handy (Graciela) of Houston, six aunts, Maria Esther Briones of Santa Rosa, Maria Ignacia Ovalle (Lorenzo) of Santa Rosa, Francisca Gonzales (Alfredo) of Santa Rosa, Vera Smith of New Orleans, Alicia Rios (Eucebio) of West Chicago, Katherine Torres (Servando) of Edinburg, and numerous cousins.

Visitation will be held today, Saturday, August 2, 2003 and Sunday, August 3, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with rosaries to be prayed both evenings at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be held on Monday, August 4, 2003 departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Santa Rosa with Father Plutarco as celebrant. Interment will follow at Santo Nombre Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Salvador Baeza, Alex Balli, Lalo Cardenas, Lorenzo Ovalle, Joey Gonzales, and Joe Rios. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Gonzales, the Ovalle Family, the Rey Lopez Family, Sergio Rodriguez, Charlie Sweet, Ernie Guerra, Ernesto Garza, Ronak Shah, Beshoy Shatby, VBMC friends, Ben Fry’s Pharmacy, Wal-Mart Pharmacy of Weslaco, Ricardo and Kathy Gomez, Ryan Rodgers, Steve Gutierrez, Felix Lerma, Steven Gore.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Dr. Beau Briones Memorial Scholarship.

Miguel Hernandez

SAN BENITO, TX — Miguel Hernandez, 84, entered into rest on May 26, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born October 18, 1918 in San Benito, TX to Mariano Hernandez and Maria Jesusa Salazar.

He is survived by his sons, Jose (Alicia) Hernandez of Florida, Miguel L. (Eloisa) Hernandez, Pedro (Alicia) Hernandez, Carlos Hernandez, Antonio (Rita) Hernandez, Juan (Josie) Hernandez all of San Benito and Ramiro (Norma) Hernandez of Harlingen; 34 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; sisters, Clara Perez, Cruz Cortez, Petra Cuevas and Rita Martinez; brothers, Estacio Hernandez, Jesus Hernandez and Jacinto Hernandez.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Candelaria Hernandez; son, Estanislado Hernandez; and daughters, Natalia Hinojosa and Mareita Hernandez.

Visitation will be held at the San Benito Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2003. Funeral services will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 11 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2003. Interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home in San Benito, TX.

Patricia C. Maston

HARLINGEN, TX — Patricia Maston, 81, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas.

She was a retired Medical Secretary for the original Radiologist in Harlingen. She was president in 1976 of the Ladies Auxilary of  Texas Fireman’s Association. Patricia Maston grew up in the First Methodist Church of Harlingen, then at the present time she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Benito.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis Maston of San Benito,  Texas; three children, Frances  Johnson (Norm) of Anchorage, Alaska, Louise Cooper (Selwyn) of San Antonio,  Texas; Elward (Annette) of Shreveport, L.A.; nine grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren; one brother, Gene Cockrill (Pat) of Harlingen,  Texas.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of San Benito.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in San Benito.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home. Dignity Provider.

Lorenzo Mata Mendez

HARLINGEN, TX — Lorenzo Mata Mendez, age 81, went to be with the Lord Monday morning at Retama Manor Nursing Home.

He was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, San Juana Castillo Mendez.

Survivors include daughters, Concepcion Mendez Quintanilla (Ted), Catarina M. Gonzalez (Tony), Juanita Isabel Mendez; stepchildren, Julia Pinon of Abeline, TX, Tomasa Salinas of Alvin, TX, Agustina M. Bazan (Ofelio) of Harlingen, Hinio Molina (Maggie) of Harlingen; 2 sisters, Petra Arguellas of Mercedes and Felipa Molina of Harlingen; 3 brothers, Santos Mendez, Pedro Mendez and Servando Mendez all of California; also numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2003 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Horacio Chavarria officiating.

Burial will follow to Ashland Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be David Gonzalez, Manuel Bazan Jr., Hinio Molina Jr., Lupe Quintanilla, Ted Quintanilla III and Mike Mendez.

Arrangements will be under the direction Trinity Funeral Chapel. 1217 South F. Street Harlingen,  Texas.

Monique (Mimi) Renee Denton

HARLINGEN — Monique (Mimi) Renee Denton, 29, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2003 in Harlingen.

Monique was born on April 19, 1974 in Memphis, TN and had spent the majority of her life in Harlingen. In her early years she attended school at St. Paul Lutheran Church and St. Alban’s Episcopal Church and attended Harlingen High School.

She is survived by her mother, Carole Sullivan of Harlingen; daughter, Summer Ingham of Lincoln, NE; sisters, Shannon Cherrington of Laguna Vista, Melissa Daniell of Harlingen, Piper Thomas of Little Rock, AR, Carrie Sultan of Orlando, FL.; brothers, Scott Sullivan of Harlingen, Chuck Denton of Little Rock, AR, Tyke Hull of Harlingen, Rob Hull of Nashville, TN; grandparents, Donald and Helen Shirley; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Dr. Charles C. Denton.

Funeral services will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2003 with Rev. David Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Hurlee Cherrington, Tyke Hull, Ted Daniell, Steve Shirley, Charles Cherrington, and Tom Lockhart. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Sullivan.

The family request that memorial donations may be made to her daughter, Summer Ingham Fund at any  Texas State Bank location.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Roberto de los Santos

HARLINGEN — Roberto de los Santos, age 75, went to be with the Lord on Friday evening at Harlingen Medical Center.

A lifetime resident of Harlingen, he was a member of the American Legion Post #205. He worked for the Harlingen Fire Dept. for 16 years. He began working with the U. S. Immigration & Naturalization as a Supervisory Detention Officer from where he later retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel de los Santos and Sara Longoria, and brother Willie de los Santos.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years Estrella de los Santos of Harlingen; son Roberto de los Santos, Jr. (San Juanita) of Harlingen; daughters Cora Rosales (Jesse) of Harlingen and Nora de los Santos of Harlingen; 5 grandchildren, Vince de los Santos, Venessa de los Santos, Brian Rosales, Carlos D. Pena and wife Jackie, Marissa D. Pena; 1 great-grandson Miguel Jose Pena. A devoted family friend Amelia (Maria) Saavedra and her children, Pfc. Linda Saavedra and Alfredo Saavedra; 2 brothers Arturo de los Santos of Harlingen and Anthony de los Santos of Houston; 4 sisters Bertha Moody and Mary Helen Cano both of Harlingen, Ninfa Fiedler of Dallas and Alicia Westlake of Houston, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, May 25, 2003 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, May 26, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Horacio Chavarria officiating.

Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military honor under the auspices of American Legion Post 205 and VFW Post 2410.

Pallbearers will be Alfredo Saavedra, Vince de los Santos, Brian Rosales, Carlos Pena, Joe de los Santos, and Enrique Banda.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F. Street, Harlingen, 364-2444.

Trinidad F. Soto

KERRVILLE, TX — Mrs. Trinidad F. Soto, age 83, of Kerrville, passed away May 23, 2003 at a San Antonio hospital. She was born in San Benito,  Texas on August 3, 1919 to Albino Flores and Maria Zuniga Flores. She married Martin O. Soto in Brownsville, TX on November 20, 1953.

Mrs. Soto was a member of the Frist Baptist Church of Ingram. She was a very loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Marti O. Soto of Kerrville; daughter, Ninfa Nancy Cardenas and husband, Richard E. of San Jose, CA; and step-daughter, Aurora Morales and husband, Andres of Mercedes, TX; step-son, Cruz Soto and wife, Adelpha of Falfurrias, TX; brothers, Jesus Flores of Harlingen, TX and Tranquilino Flores of San Jose, CA; two grandchildren, Lisa Cardenas Lewis and husband, Jim of LaMesa, CA and Rick E. Cardenas, II of San Jose, CA; great granddaughter, Jessica Cardenas Lewis of LaMesa, CA; several nieces and nephews and a close family friend, Bryan Finley of Kerrville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Juanita R. Rodriguez.

Services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2003, 10 a.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel with brother Jimmy Allen officiating.

A visitation will be held, Monday, May 26, 2003 at Grimes Funeral Chapel from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Ingram or to a charity of one’s choice.
