CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — James A. Crisler, 40, passed away August 14, 2003. He was born December 19, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois.

Survivors include his four sisters, Deborah A. Moreno, Cathy L. Crisler, Janice M. Buitron and Denise Woods.

A Rosary will be recited at Seaside Funeral Home on Friday, August 15, 2003 at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter Prince of Apostle Catholic Church on Saturday, August 16, 2003 at 1 p.m.

Maryann Lambert

SAN BENITO, TX — Maryann Lambert, age 77, of San Benito,  Texas, formerly of Yankton, South Dakota died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at Ratama Manor in Harlingen,  Texas.

A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2003, at Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton with the Reverend Dayne Zachrison officiating. Inurnment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Lambert of Yankton; son, Curtis Lambert of Yankton; brother, Darrell Herrman of Westboro, Missouri; sister-in-law, Juanita Weir of Graham, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Juan Balderas

MERCEDES, TX — Juan Balderas, 67, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at The Audie Murphy Veteran’s Administration Hospital in San Antonio. He was born on August 29, 1935 in Weslaco,  Texas, son of Lucio C. Balderas and Francisca Garcia Balderas.

Mr. Balderas is preceded in death by his father, Lucio C. Balderas in 1983; and his brother, Agapito Balderas in 1981.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Stephanie) Balderas of San Antonio, Robert Balderas of San Antonio, Anthony "Tony" Balderas of San Antonio; daughters, Linda (Pete) Perez of Weslaco, Diana "Dee Dee" (Ben) Alonzo of Edinburg; mother, Mrs. Francisca G. Balderas of Mercedes; brothers, Max Balderas, Manuel Balderas, Jose Balderas, Trino Balderas; sisters, Lupe Balderas, Maria Garcia, Elena Castaneda, Frances Balderas; 10 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation was held yesterday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco. Visitation today, August 15, 2003 will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Rosary to be recited at Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco,  Texas.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 16, 2003 at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. military graveside service will be conducted by the Catholic War Veterans of Weslaco.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco,  Texas.

Bessie "Boots" Fletcher

WIMBERLEY, TX — Bessie Irene Martin Fletcher passed from this life to eternal life on August 9, 2003 in Wimberley, TX. Bessie was born in Arlington, TX on September 28, 1903.

She married Roy Fletcher in 1920, after which he began to call her "Boots", the name by which she was best known. They moved to Raymondville in 1938 where they farmed in the Clark Orchard area until 1949. Bessie moved to New Braunfels in 1998, where she lived until just a few months before her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; her son, Garland Fletcher; her son-in-law, Charles Powitzky; and her granddaughter, Marie Sitton Pagel.

She is survived by one brother, Verlin Martin of Amarillo, TX; two daughters, Hazel J. Sitton and husband, Rex A. Sitton of San Marcos, TX and Jessie L. Powitzky of New Braunfels, TX; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Barber Fletcher of Tivoli, TX; 5 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Sevices will be held at the First Baptist Church in Wimberley, TX on Thursday, August 14, 2003 at 11 a.m.

Viewing will be at 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. at the church.

Interment will be in Raymondville Cemetery on Saturday, August 16, 2003 at 10 a.m.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomason Funeral Home, San Marcos, TX.

Concepcion Esparza Becerra

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Concepcion Esparza Becerra, 90, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2003 at her home in Raymondville,  Texas. She was born August 15, 1912 in San Benito,  Texas to Andres and Sophia (Rodriguez) Esparza.

Funeral service will be held Saturday 10 a.m., August 16, 2003 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery. A Rosary will be held Friday 7 p.m., at Duddlesten Funeral Chapel.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Ramon Becerra of Raymondville; five sons, Joe Becerra of Alamo, Rueben Becerra of Brownsville, Epifanio Becerra of San Antonio, Andres and Albert Becerra both of Raymondville; five daugthers, Sophia Arellano of Edinburg, Carmen Becerra of Raymondville, Connie Perez of Salome, AZ, Evangelina Gutierrez of Raymondville and Angelita Karlson of Moseslake, WA; one sister, Carmen Salinas of Othello, WA; and one brother, Benito Esparaza of Spokane, WA. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Francisco Hernandez

SAN BENITO, TX — Francisco Hernandez, 43, of San Benito,  Texas passed away at his residence on August 13, 2003.

Survivors include 2 brothers, Guadalupe Hernandez Jr., of San Benito, TX, and Jesus B. Hernandez of San Benito, TX; sister-in-law, Corina Santillan of San Benito, TX; 3 nieces, Maria Francis Echavaria, Christy M. Martinez and Jessica F. Hernandez; 3 nephews, Jesus Hernandez Jr., Joshua F. Hernandez and Enrique R. Solano; also an aunt, Anita "Nena" Cortinas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Maria Hernandez; sister, Gloria A. Hernandez; paternal grandmother, Siria Hernandez; and maternal grandparents, Francisco and Florinda Bocanegra.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Thomae Garza Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, August 18, 2003 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito. Cremation will follow after the Mass to Sacred Park Crematorium.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, August 15, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2003 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, August 17, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, 956-399-1331.

Ignacio Moran

HARLINGEN/SAN BENITO, TX — Ignacio Moran, 73, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on August 13, 2003.

Survivors includes his wife, Maria L. Moran of Harlingen, TX; 4 sons, Jorge (Socorro) Moran of Mission, TX, Hector Moran, Steve Moran, and Oscar (Cindy) Moran all of Harlingen, TX; 3 daughters, Norma Moran, Diane (Arnold) Sanchez, and Bonnie (Pete) Lerma all from Harlingen, TX; 2 sisters, Adelaida (David) Morales, and Fidela (Elpidio) Garcia; 1 brother, David Moran; 13 grandchildrenand 9 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, August 15, 2003 with a Rosary starting at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will begin 10 a.m., Saturday, August 16, 2003 at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Las Rusias Cemetery in Los Indios, TX.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito, 956-399-1331.

Linard C. Gilbert

SAN BENITO — Linard C. Gilbert, 78, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen.

He was born in Poteet,  Texas May 3, 1925. He spent his childhood living in Moore and Wimberley,  Texas and his adult life in San Benito. He was a member of Baptist Temple Church in San Benito. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Gamble; parents, Luther and Cora Gilbert; sister, Bernice Yost and brother Johnny Gilbert. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Gilbert; son Monte (Linda) Gilbert of Harlingen and daughter Suzanne Gilbert of San Benito.

He is also survived by sister, Jewel Fry of San Benito and brother, Franklin (Betty) Gilbert of Casper Wyoming; stepdaughters, Becky (Dave) Tresnicky of Harlingen and Kathy (Rick) Swartz of Brownsville; grandchildren, James M. Cavazos, Monica A. Cavazos, Clint Gilbert, and Cristy Gilbert and stepgrandchildren Sonya, Nick and Heather Tresnicky and Ricky Swartz. He also has great grandchildren: Jacob Cavazos, Clarissa Cavazos, Dylan Gilbert, Hunter Garcia, and Trevor Gilbert and may nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to George and Bertha Eckert, Tom Ellis and Danny Cavazos. To all the caregivers at Harlingen Medical Center, TwinBrooke Nursing Home and Retama Manor. Also thank you to San Benito Medical Associates, David Garza and members of Baptist Temple Church. He had many friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to spend time hunting, fishing and swimming along the banks of the Blanco River in Wimberley. He retired in 1982 after 42 years of dedicated service with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

He continued to tinker with telephones and had an extensive collection of antique telephones. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Elder Care Home Health & Hospice.

Visitation will be Thursday at the Thomae Chapel, 701 N. Bowie, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be at Mont Meta on Friday, May 30, 2003 at 10 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie.

Nella Jo Jennings

BROWNSVILLE — Nella Jo Jennings, born in Pettus  Texas on January 10, 1931 in her grandmother’s home, went to be with the Lord on Sunday May 25, 2003. After Nella Jo graduated from High School, she went to Southwest State in San Marcos and received a degree in Education and Spanish, and taught school in Refugio for a year while her husband was in the U.S.C.C.

She and Norman Jennings were married in the Christian Church in Pettus on July 4, 1953. After their move to Brownsville, she became very active in the D.A.R., D.R.T. and Learners Club. Nella Jo is remembered by her husband as being a wonderful woman and the center of his life, which will not be the same without her.

Mrs. Jennings is survived by her husband, Norman of Brownsville, and one son, Randal Alan Jennings and his wife, Dr. Pam Jennings and their two children, Justin and Lauren all of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Visitation will be at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel at 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito on Wednesday, 5/28/2003, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and family members will be present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Los Fresnos Firtst Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Colorado Springs. Thomae Funeral Home, Bowie St., San Benito have been entrusted with these arrangements.

Charlotte Louise Overfield

HARLINGEN — Charlotte Louise Overfield, 64, entered into rest on May 25, 2003 in Harlingen.

Charlotte was a devoted and supportive wife, and loving mother and grandmother. She was a long time Valley resident. She was active in the Elks Lodge of Harlingen, and a HOSTS volunteer at Bonham Elementary.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Grace Ross; brother, Everett Ross; sisters, Dorcille Phillips and Marilyn Leohman, and grandson, Calwin Overfield.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Nelson Overfield; three children, Albert Overfield of Mercedes, Daniel Overfield of Orange Park, and Robin Overfield of Harlingen.

She is also survived by five grandchildren: Kira, Jason, Robert, Kaitlin and Tyler; three siblings: Thomas Ross of Salem, OR; Carl Ross and Mary Ross both of Littleton,  Colo., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, May 28, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery in Harlingen.

Pallbearers will be Albert Overfield, Daniel Overfield, Robin Overfield, Robert Overfield, Robert Overfield, Thomas Ross and Randy Greer.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Margaret L. Ramsey

BOYNTON, Okla. — Margaret L. Ramsey, 96, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003 in  Oklahoma. Margaret was born on February 28, 1907 in Los Indios,  Texas to Robert and Martina Weaver.

She was a member of the primitive Baptist Church in Combes.

Margaret is survived by her son, Wilford R. Wood of McAllen; daughters, Virginia Andrews of Arlington, Letha Heusman of Boynton, Okla., and Joan Fenimore of Houston; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Benny W. Wood; her brothers, Fred Weaver and John Weaver.

Visitation hours will be held Thursday, May 29, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Dicky officiating.

Burial will follow in Mont Meta Memorial Park.

For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to Hospice & St. Francis Hospice, 1303 W. Broadway, Muskogee, Okla. 74401.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Mary M. Shipley

SAN ANTONIO — Mary "Mickey" Monica Fay Shipley, a.k.a. "Meemaw," age 83, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2003, in San Antonio.

She was born on August 17, 1919, in Stuart, Iowa. Mary, a veteran of WWII, moved with her family to Harlingen in 1962.

She moved to Brownsville in 1971, where she resided until moving to San Antonio last year to live with her youngest daughter. She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter; grandson, Timothy Andrew Sneed; and three sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by five daughters, Patricia (Bob) Sneed of Harlingen, Kathleen (Jim) Price of Boerne, Linda (Bobby) Roberts of San Antonio, Monica (David) Wilhite of Brownsville, and Lisa of San Antonio and three sons, Michael (Lourdes) Shipley of Los Fresnos, Kevin (Patti) Shipley of Katy, and Larry (Yvette) Shipley of San Antonio, twelve grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. A Holy Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. in the Darling-Mouser Funeral Home in Brownsville.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Saint Mary’s Church in Brownsville with Monsignor Gus Barerra officiating.

Interment will follow at the Rose Memorial Gardens in Brownsville. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion, Post 43 Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Chris Wilhite, Brian Oaks, Michael Sneed, Stephen Turvey, Kevin Wilhite, and Mikah Wilhite.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to a charity of choice. Special thanks is given to Santa Rosa Hospice for their loving kindness and professional care.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd., Brownsville,  Texas.
