Dr. Emilio Garcia, Jr. DDS

SAN ANTONIO/SAN BENITO, TX — Dr. Emilio Garcia, Jr. DDS (formerly of San Benito, TX) passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2003.

Emilio was preceded in death by his loving parents, Emilio T. Garcia, Sr. and Georgia Ann B. Garcia.

He is survived by his one and only brother, Orlando Garcia; his sister-in-law, Iris D. Garcia; and his three loving nieces, Amanda Lee, Lori Ann, Samantha Georgia Garcia, all of San Benito, TX.

Emilio is a graduate of San Benito High School and attended Pan American University, Baylor University, and UTSA.

He received a Doctor’s Degree in Dentistry making a career of his education and established his dental practice in San Antonio, TX.

He also became a helicopter pilot with a certification for aviation ground and flight instruction, thus fulfilling his own personal goals.

He was a member of the St. George Maronite Catholic Church in San Antonio; member of the church choir, church usher, and Holy Name Society Member, designer of the church’s first website, winner of the Massabki Medal in 1997.

Emilio was a noble man who touched the lives of all those he met. He will be missed here on earth by many and welcomed into his new home in heaven.

Visitation and prayer service will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Thomae Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Universe in San Benito. Interment to follow at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito, TX.

Pallbearers will be Rick Aguirre, Juan R. Escamilla, Hector Garcia, Julian Garcia III, Nonito Plata III, and Roger Romero. Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Grimes.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Funeral Home, 701 North Bowie Street, San Benito, TX.

Yolanda De Luna

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Yolanda De Luna, 56, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.

She was born April 26, 1947 in Rio Hondo,  Texas to Jose Maria and Petra (Suarez) Gonzales.

She was a strong and Loving wife, mother and sister.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., June 10th at our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Burial will follow at Las Anaquitas Cemetery in Rio Hondo.

A Rosary was held Monday, 7 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel.

She is survived by her husband, Antonio (Conco) De Luna of Raymondville; four daughters, Gloria Ann De Luna (Noe Perez) and Odilia Lee De Luna both of Raymondville, Rebeca Kay De Luna (Ruben Perez, Jr) of Hallettsville, TX and Claudia Gonzales of Raymondville; one son, Victor "Tito" Gonzales of Raymondville; six sisters, Sylvia (Jose) Coronado of Falfurrias, Irma Gonzales and Mary Alice Bays both of Raymondville, Eliza (Jorge) Vargas of El Paso, Diana (Ricky) Benavides of Falfurrias and Debbie (Harvey) Arevalo of Raymondville; six brothers, Jose Maria, Jr. (Sally) Gonzales of Norias, Esteban (Liz) Gonzales, Benjamin (Lala) Gonzales of Arlington, Lee Roy (Didi) Gonzales of Raymondville, Rudy (Janie) Garcia and Chepo (Socorro) Garcia all of Raymondville. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her baby brother, Jose Maria Gonzales in 1950 and her beloved nephew, Santos (J.R.) Medina, Jr. in 2001.

Pallbearers will be Roberto Gonzalez, Alberto Gonzalez, Ruben Perez, Jr., Jesse Barrera, Matias Villalobos, Jr. and Antonio Villalobos.

Honorary pallbearers will be Victor Gonzales, Ricky Benavides and Noe Perez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Henry C. (Hank) Schulte

SAN BENITO,TX — Henry C. (Hank) Schulte, 81, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Brownsville Medical Center. He was born November 8, 1921 to Rudolph and Mary Schulte in Kansas City, Missouri.

He formerly owned the Donie Chair Co., Inc. for forty years. He moved the company to Brownsville,  Texas in 1973. He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II for four and a half years. He was Director Emeritus of the  Texas Association of Business, a former board member of the Marine military Academy, President of Cameron County Water Improvement District No. 16 and a founding board member of  Texas State Technical Institute appointed by Gov. Preston Smith.

He also loved to raise Appaloosa Horses on his ranch.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Schulte; three sons, Steve Schulte, Charlie Reyes and Randy Randall; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours will be from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2003, with a Rosary service being held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral Mass will be held at the Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in San Benito, 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2003 with Father Mario Di Cicco, O.F.M. officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Steve Schulte, Randy Randall, Charlie Reyes, Ron Penny, Santos Gomez, and Mark Barnard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those desiring to do so may make memorial donations to Fr. Mario C/O Hank Schulte Scholarship Fund, at Quincy University, 1800 College, Quincy, IL 62301.

Thomas "Tom" E. Cooper

HARLINGEN, TX — Thomas "Tom" E. Cooper, 82, passed away after a sudden illness, Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas.

Mr. Cooper was born in Des Moines, Iowa on September 18, 1920.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara Shreves Cooper; his daughter, Susan (James) Price of Aurora, Illinois; his grandchildren, Shannon Daugherty and Chad Daughterty; his four great grandchildren; and his sister, Sally (Mrs. Noah) Lacona are all in Iowa.

Tom served his country in the Air Corp from September 1941 through October 1945 in Italy and North Africa. After returning stateside he worked at N.W. Bell until 1973, when he returned and he and Barbara retired to live in Harlingen,  Texas.

Tom and Barbara were active members at First Presbyterian Church; Tom belonged to the Harlingen ElksLodge #1889 and was a fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge; and belonged to ZaGaZig Shrine in Iowa.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Justin  Jones officiating.

For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Guadalupe (Nana) Rodriguez

SAN BENITO, TX — Mrs. Rodriguez was born on July 15, 1911, and passed away on June 8, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Filiberto Rodriguez.

Mrs. Rodriguez is survived by her son, Noe R. Rodriguez; daughter, Noemi Ramirez; granddaughter, Erika Evonne and son-in-law, J.P. Ramirez all of San Benito,  Texas.

Our special thanks to all of our family and friends for their prayers.

Visitation will begin on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary scheduled at 7 p.m.

The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Mont-Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas 956-399-1331.

Senovia Cantu

SAN BENITO, TX — Senovia Cantu, age 78, went to be with the Lord early Monday morning at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

She was a lifetime resident of San Benito. She enjoyed sewing and crafting. She had a love for the movie and characters of "Gone With The Wind" for which she had collectiable items and would watch the movie without end. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include Nelda (Tirso) Cruz of San Benito, Belia Amaya of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today from 12 noon to 9 p.m. A holy rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral mass will be at St. Benedict Catholic Church on Thursday, June 12, 2003 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F. Street, Harlingen,  Texas.

Meredith E. Leka

LA FERIA, TX — Meredith E. Leka, 88, of La Feria went to her eternal rest on Thursday, June 10, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

She was born January 1, 1926 in Springfield, Illinois to Thomas and Edith Lawson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd K. Leka and her son, Christopher Leka.

She is survived by sons, Dennis Huston of Grand Praire,  Texas; Keith Huston of Springfield, Illinois and Gary Leka of La Feria; four step-children, Lloyd Leka, Jr. of Buffalo, Illinois, James Leka of Spaulding, Illinois, Shirley Rhodes of Sprinfield, Illinois and Verna Leka of Illiopolis, Illinois; brother, Gerald Lawson of Springfield, Illinois; sister, Dorothy Basso of Matton, Illinois; 15 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in La Feria,  Texas, 5 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2003.

A burial service will be held in Mechanicsburg, Illinois at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family request that those desiring to do so may make donations to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, 1400  Jackson St., Denver, CO 80206 or to another worthy charity.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Emilia G. Castañeda

ELSA, TX — Emilia Guzman Castañeda, 86, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at her residence in Elsa. She was born February 15, 1917 in Mercedes, TX to Blas and Locadia Cano Guzman. She had also worked in a Convent in Toledo, Ohio for about 10 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guadalupe Castaneda; her parents; and her brothers, Ernesto, Eriberto, Espiridion, Ezequiel and Eliseo C. Guzman.

She is survived by her sisters, Eduvigis G. Ochoa of Elsa and Erlinda G. Rojas of  Washington State; her brother, Enrique C. Guzman of Elsa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Guzman family wish to thank Velia Morales for taking care of her, Emma Tapia for being a good neighbor and Rosa Gonzalez for visiting her everyday.

A funeral mass will be celebrated today, Thursday, June 12, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elsa. Interment will follow at Campacuas Cemetery in Mercedes.

Serving as pallbearers will be her loving family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.

Maria G. Canales

HARILNGEN, TX — Harlingen resident Maria G. Canales entered eternal rest after a long illness on June 10, 2003, at age 94.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi E. Canales; her sons, Reynaldo Canales and Ramiro Canales.

She is survived by her daughter, Gloria C. Corkill of San Benito. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Antonia A. Canales (Reynaldo) of Harlingen, and Gloria G. Canales (Ramiro) of Harlingen; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 12, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at Trinity Funeral Chapel with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

A holy mass will be held Friday, June 13, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Harlingen with Father Briseño as celebrant.

Interment will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Robert Corkill, Ronnie Corkill, Raymond Corkill,Ruben Corkill, Reynaldo Canales, and George Canales.

We would like to thank those people from the Harlingen Nursing Center and Valley Baptist Medical Center who cared for her.

Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel.
