Anna Lee Kyser

SAN BENITO, TX — Anna Lee Kyser, 99, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen.

Anna was born on August 30, 1903 in Carrolton, Missouri and had been a resident of San Benito for the past 90 years.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and by many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.C. Kyser; her mother and father, Lydia and Otis Adams; her brothers, Wesley, Johnny and Marvin; her sisters, Sarah Mullins, Lillian Johnston and Edith Woods.

Visitation hours will be from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the family present from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Graveside services only will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park, 10 a.m., Friday, June 13,2003 with the Rev. Buddy Owens officiating.

Pallbearers will be Harlen Woods, Carl Otsuki, Richard Woods, Bill Miller, Don  White and Kenneth Woods.

Honorary pallbearers will be Faye Otsuki, Pat  White, Helen Miller, Bertha Woods, Linda Woods, Cecil Woods, Dana Clark, Dennis Mullins, Evelyn  Woods and Joe Joe Johnston.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Temple Baptist Church in San Benito or to the charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Elaine Krafka Dilley

AUSTIN, TX — Elaine Krafka Dilley, 55, of Austin passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Krafka and mother, Anastasia Krafka; and a nephew, John Thornton.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Dilley; one daughter, Anna Dilley; one son, Michael Eugene Dilley; three borthers, Gene, James and Gerald Krafka; one sister, Mary Thornton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 4 p.m. at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home in Austin,  Texas.

Ramon Gomez

HARLINGEN, TX — Ramon Gomez, 71, entered into rest on June 11, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Sara Gomez, and a sister, Martha Bravo Gomez.

He is survived by three children, Alfredo Gomez (Nora) of Harlingen, Lupita Gaedke (Flavio) of Lozano, and Ramon Gomez (Olga) of Harlingen. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Melissa Gomez, Monica Gomez, Aaron Gomez, Israel Gaedke, Angela Gaedke, Marco Gomez, Amanda Gomez; two brothers, Alfredo Gomez (Maria) of San Benito, Jesus Gomez; and a sister, Chepa Bravo Gomez both of Mexico.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, June 13, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.

The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2003 departing the funeral home at 9 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Arturo Longoria, Rene Berlanga, Ruben Quintana, Freddie Gomez, nephew, Israel Gaedke, and Aaron Gomez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Grace Van Scoyoc

HOUSTON, TX — Grace Van Scoyoc, 93, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 in Houston,  Texas after a brief illness. She had been a resident of Holly Hall in Houston since 1987.

Grace was born to John W. and Maggie Mae Boyd on January 11, 1910 in Wise County,  Texas. She graduated from Scott and  White nursing school in Belton,  Texas in 1930, and in 1931 married John Hugh Speegle. She enjoyed a long and successful nursing career.

After a private nursing in hospitals, she was a nurse for the Harlingen Independent School District for many years and had many friends in the Harlingen area. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her beloved husband, John.

She is survived by one son, John Hugh Speegle, Jr.; two grandsons, Trey John Speegle of New York City and Tad Joseph Speegle of Baton Rouge,  Louisiana; two sisters, Falbia Wood of Houston and Orva Neil Densley of Union Gap,  Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, 10 a.m., Saturday, June 14, 2003 with the Rev. Wayne Peck officiating.

Her family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital in Houston for their attentive care, and Holly Hall for the many years of loving care she received while living there. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Daniel Guerra

SANTA ROSA, TX — Daniel Guerra, 50, was called to his eternal rest on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, following a brief stay at  Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Born in Santa Rosa,  Texas on June 26, 1952, he enjoyed life surrounded by family and friends, living most of his life in Santa Rosa, in Arkansas, and in Itta Bena, Mississippi. A graduate of Santa Rosa High School in 1971, he worked in the cotton industry throughout his life.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Maria Luisa Guerra.

He is survived by his father, Guadalupe Guerra of Santa Rosa; his children, Daniel and Veronica Guerra of San Antonio, Daniel Diaz of Corpus Christi, and Tyelise Foster of Itta Bena; his grandchildren, Dalvin, Terrance, and Tyliq Foster of Itta Bena; his sister, Gloria (Frank) Trevino of Santa Rosa; his brothers, Ricardo (Maria) Aguinaga, Guadalupe (Amelia) Guerra, and Roy (Raquel) Guerra of Santa Rosa, Pedro (Petra) Garza of Austin, Gilbert (Hilda) Guerra of Falcon Heights, Ramiro (Norma) Guerra of Edinburg, and Carlos (Miriam) Guerra of Harlingen. He leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and friends. Graveside services will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2003, at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria,  Texas.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

James Workman Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — James Donald Workman, Sr., 81, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center.

Jim was born on April 10, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. He had been a resident of Harlingen for the past 5 years, moving here from Hutchison, Kansas. He was an Architectural Hardware Consultant before his retirement. Jim was a Deacon and member of the Newbury Community Church in Newbury, OH, Deacon and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ramsey, NJ, and a member of the Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.

Survivors include his 2 sons, James D. Workman, Jr. of Harlingen, TX and Brian R. Workman of Basking Ridge, NY; 4 grandchildren, Scott, Susan, Christopher, and Kyle; 2 great grandchildren, William and Jaycie. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, 2 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2003 with the Rev. Pat Graham officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church in Harlingen or Loaves and Fishes. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

John C. Harper

April 18, 1939 – June 8, 2003

SAN BENITO, TX — John C. Harper passed away on June 8, 2003. John was born in American Fork, Utah on April 18, 1939. He was preceded in death by his parents John David and Lillian Harper; brother, David Harper; and sister, Mary Kathryn Seminario.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Villegas Harper of San Benito, TX; son, John David Harper of Salt Lake City, Utah; sister, Helen Harper of Salt Lake City, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

John was self-employed owner of Harper Construction & Siding for more than 40 years and was deeply devoted to his customers. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed golfing and traveling. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

John loved life and lived it to its fullest. He will be greatly missed by his family as well as everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be honored with a memorial service on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

Meredith E. Leka

LA FERIA, TX — Meredith E. Leka, 77, of La Feria went to her eternal rest on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

She was born January 1, 1926 in Springfield, Illinois to Thomas and Edith Lawson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd K. Leka and her son, Christopher Leka.

She is survived by sons, Dennis Huston of Grand Praire,  Texas; Keith Huston of Springfield, Illinois and Gary Leka of La Feria; four step-children, Lloyd Leka, Jr. of Buffalo, Illinois, James Leka of Spaulding, Illinois, Shirley Rhodes of Springfield, Illinois and Verna Leka of Illiopolis, Illinois; brother, Gerald Lawson of Springfield, Illinois; sister, Dorothy Basso of Matton, Illinois; 15 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in La Feria,  Texas, 5 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2003.

A burial service will be held in Mechanicsburg, Illinois at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family request that those desiring to do so may make donations to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, 1400  Jackson St., Denver, CO 80206 or to another worthy charity.

Moy Piñeda

McALLEN, TX — Moy Piñeda was a well renowned trumpet player in South  Texas.

He began his musical career in the fifties with the Eugenio Gutierrez orchestra, a well-known orchestra that toured the country and recorded numerous hits under the Falcon and Ideal labels.

In 1954, Moy married his best friend and love of his life, Delia Gutierrez.

Together they raised their three daughters, Cecilia (George Diaz), Norma (Bobby Perez) and Melba Carvajal in their McAllen home full of love, laughter and music.

Among Moy’s many accomplishments as a professional musician were writing musical arrangements for local recording studios and other Valley musicians.

He accompanied the famous recording artist, Juan Gabriel and had the privilege to play with many outstanding musicians.

He was recognized for his role in the 1952 film, "Viva Zapata" starring Anthony Quinn.

Moy was best known as the leader of the Moy Piñeda Mini Band, where he enjoyed playing numerous weddings, quinceañeras and anniversary parties for over twenty years.

Moy was a manager for Klinck’s Drug Stores for 38 years.

The pride and joys of his life were his grandchildren, Kenneth (Jessica) Carvajal, Vanessa and Bobby Perez, George, Crystal and Michelle Diaz, and Sarah Carvajal.

He was actively involved with the following civic organizations, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8788 Honor Guard, where he played "Taps" for veterans’ funerals, American Legion Post 101, Pharr,  Texas, The Mission Catholic War Veterans, McAllen Musician’s Association, McAllen Lion’s Club and the National Rifle Association of America.

The family conveys their deepest gratitude to Mrs. Cris Navarro, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Peña, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Alva, Dr. Miguel Aleman, Ms. Lydia Garza, Omega Hospice, as well as many family members and friends for their support and prayer during a very difficult and trying time.

Special thanks to the members of Post 8788 and members of Moy Piñeda Mini Band for their faithful support.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, June 13, 2003, at Rivera Funeral Home in McAllen, with a 7 p.m. rosary.

Funeral procession departs Saturday, May 14, 2003, at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Valley Memorial Gardens.

Hipolito M. Salomon Jr.

SAN BENITO, TX — Hipolito M. Salomon Jr., 81, entered into eternal rest on June 10, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

Mr. Salomon received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army while serving as a military Police during W.W.II.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eva C. Salomon of San Benito; 2 daughters, Norma (Bret) McCarty of San Antonio and Esmeralda Salomon of San Benito,  Texas; 3 sons, Armando (Debi) Salomon of Natalia,  Texas, Zeke (Esther Rodriguez) Salomon of San Antonio,  Texas and Rolando (Linda) Salomon of Somerset,  Texas; 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Larry Molano and Reynaldo Molano both of Los Fresnos,  Texas; 1 sister, Josefina Resendez of San Benito,  Texas; numerous nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hipolito Sr. and Maria Petra Salomon; 1 brother, Federico Salomon; 1 sister, Maria Salomon.

Memorial Services will be held 10 a.m., today, June 13, 2003 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in San Benito, texas.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to American Diabetes Association in memory of Hipolito M. Salomon Jr.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas. 399-1331.

Ricardo Ibarra De La Fuente

LOZANO, TX — Ricardo Ibarra De La Fuente, 78, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ, Thursday, June 12, 2003. He was born May 19, 1925 in Matamoros, Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Olivia Pena De Ibarra.

He is survived by his children, Olga (Alfredo) Reyes, Armando (Adelina) Ibarra of Rio Hondo, TX; Ma Elvia (Gilberto) Santana of Mesquite, TX; Ricardo Jr. (Priscilla) Ibarra of San Antonio, TX; he is also survived by his children, Marylou (Joe) Aldape of Mercedes, TX; Alfredo Ibarra, and Sonia (Rodolfo) De La Torre of Southgate, California.

He is also survived by his loving wife for 43 years, Gregoria Arrellano De Ibarra of Lozano, TX; and their children, Cokina (Omar) Reyes, Cleo (John) Medeiros of Rio Hondo, TX; Dalia (Rolando) De La Rosa of La Feria, TX; Sergio A. Ibarra of Lozano, TX; Jose Hugo Ibarra of McAllen, TX; Luis Roberto Ibarra of Lozano, TX; Gloria (Tony) Alcantar of McAllen, TX; Alma (Martin) Camarrillo of Galveston, TX; Bertha Martinez of Rio Hondo, TX; Ana Maria Ibarra of Posa Rica, Vera Cruz, Mexico; (Elvia Ibarra +) of Matamoros; Elsie (Juanito) Torres of Killeen, TX; and Juanito Vela of San Antonio, TX; his is also survived by 50 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ricardo Ibarra De La Fuente, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, "May You Rest In Peace".

Visitation will be held today, Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home of 701 N. Bowie St. in San Benito, TX.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 16, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Rio Hondo, TX. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Reyes, Juanito Vela, Brian De La Rosa, Martin Camarillo, Jesus Puga, Jeremiah Medeiros, and Eder Ibarra.

Honorary pallbearers will be Arnoldo Javier Ibarra and Alfredo Reyes Jr.
