Luz Delia Martinez-Martell

MERCEDES, TX — Luz Delia Martinez-Martell, 75, passed away Thursday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Saul Martell and is survived by a son, David Martell of Mercedes; three step-sons, Saul Martell, Jr. of Donna, Eugene Martell of Weslaco, and Bobby Martell of Mercedes; two daughters, Milly Verduzco and Luz Bazarte of Mercedes; a step-daughter, Betty Jean Martell of Mercedes; also surviving are one brother, Carlos Lozada of San Fernando Valley, CA; and a sister, Guadalupe Toscano of Anaheim, CA; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes. Interment will follow at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Jose M. de la Fuente, Sr.

SAN BENITO — Jose M. de la Fuente Sr., went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2003 at the age of 76.

He was a loving father of five children; Sylvia de la Fuente, Norma Castro (Jesus), Joe de la Fuente Jr. (Marina), Gloria Moncada (Eduardo), Roel de la Fuente (Sarah); brothers, Oscar de la Fuente Sr., Robert de la Fuente; sisters, Concepcion Noyola, Juanita Ramirez, Ernestina Motley, Aurora Perez, Alicia Garcia, and Maria de la Fuente. The pride and joy of his life were his eight grandchildren, Nancy and Becky Menchaca, Joe III, Elida Rosario and Nicholas de la Fuente, Edward and Marissa Moncada, Roel de la Fuente Jr., and one great-grandchild Clarissa Iris Menchaca.

He is preceded in death by his wife Elida de la Fuente, whom he cherished to his very end; his mother Gonzala Martinez; brothers, Esteban de la Fuente, Margarito de la Fuente and Ovidio de la Fuente.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 16, 2003 at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito,  Texas. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito,  Texas.

Pallbearers will be Oscar de la Fuente Jr., Rolando Ramirez, David Martinez, Rene Martinez Jr., Nector Noyola, and Adam Ramirez.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Directors, Inc. in San Benito,  Texas.

Linda S. Stainthorpe

SAN ANTONIO — Linda S. Stainthorpe, age 36, born September 4, 1966, in San Antonio, TX entered the Church Triumphant June 13, 2003. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Erwin and Amanda Kline of San Antonio, TX. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Lee Stainthorpe; son, John Arthur Villarreal of San Antonio; parents, Rev. and Mrs. John A. Shute (the former Janice Kline) of Houston, TX; brother, Thomas Erwin Shute; sister-in-law, Karen Marvel Shute of San Antonio, TX; nephew and nieces, Carter, Clara and Katie Shute; aunts, Carol Morrow, Pamela Jasso of San Antonio, TX; cousins, Quinn Stowe of Dallas, TX, Billy Stowe of Charlotte, NC, Adrian Jasso of Ft. Worth, TX; and large extended family.

Linda was a graduate of Harlingen High School, Harlingen, TX, and the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing of San Antonio, TX. As a Licensed Vocational Nurse, she served chiefly in gerontology in several area nursing homes and hospitals.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Porter Loring. Services will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Porter Loring.

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Overstreet

AUSTIN, TX — Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Overstreet passed away on June 8, 2003, in Dallas,  Texas. She was born May 30, 1914, in San Benito,  Texas, to Frank T. and Harriet Ewing Phillips, a pioneer family to the area.

After graduating valedictorian from San Benito High School, she attended Sullins University, Brownsville Junior College and graduated in 1934 from the University of  Texas. She was a charter member of the Brownsville Pan American Round Table, Director of the Austin Table and served as State Corresponding Secretary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Milton Overstreet.

She is survived by her son, Phil Overstreet and his wife, Emile of Dallas, Tommy Overstreet and his wife, Judy of Dallas; her daughter, Tita Maxwell and her husband, Bruce of Pflugerville; her sister, Caroline Feild of Brownsville and six grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held today, Sunday, June 15, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the University Presbyterian Church in Austin,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that those desiring to do so may make donations to the Agape Dome Retreat Center, 175 Quarter Horse Lane, Fisher,  Texas 78633.

Vera Mauldin Crockett

DONNA, TX — Vera Mauldin Crockett, 98, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 14, 2003 at her daughters residence in Houston.

Born in San Saba County, TX on February 28, 1905, she taught at a country school, married and moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1927 where she lived until 1998 when she moved to Houston to live with her daughter.

She was employed at  Woods Dry Goods in Donna for 20 years, and McKenzie’s Ladies Wear in Weslaco for 15 years. Upon retirement she became a volunteer at Knapp Medical Center where she served faithfully for 10 years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Donna since 1927.

She loved her church and the church family. They were an important part of her life and the church never failed to nourish her spiritual needs from which she drew great comfort.

She was preceded in death by her parents, R.J. and Linnie Mauldin; her brothers, Roger and Dale Mauldin; sisters, Verna Rohr and Alma Cook; sons, Gerald, Don and Larry Crockett; granddaughter, Nancy Barfield; grandson, Terry Crockett; and great grandson, Scott Grimes.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Hackelman of Houston; son, Ken Crockett (partner Sallie Sieg) of Petersburg, FL; daughters-in-law, Marjorie Crockett of Winnsboro, TX, Margaret Crockett of Pearland, TX, and Barbara Crockett of Donna, TX. She is also survived by her sister, Arba Thompson of San Benito, TX; 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 19, 2003 at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Donna, TX with visitation to begin prior to the service. The Rev. Elizabeth Smith, Pastor, of the First United Methodist Church of Donna, will serve as the officiant. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna, TX.

Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Kutch, Robin Crockett, Daryl Crockett, Neal Jackson, Wayne Crockett and Ralph Crockett.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Chris Jackson, Bryan Farley, Craig Jackson, Lloyd Farley, Dereck Crockett, Kane Reeves, Kade Reeves, Luke Raulston and Lane Raulston.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to: St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, ALSAC, P.O. Guadalupe Garza

HARLINGEN, TX — Guadalupe Lerma Garza, age 82, entered the Lords kingdom Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.

He is preceded in death by his wife Sara Garza, and daughter, Raquel Gonzalez.

Survivors are Usbaldo (Antonia) Garza of Harlingen, Carlos (Ramona) Garza of Harlingen; daughters, Yolanda (Rene) Morales of Harlingen and Juanita Gonzalez of Harlingen; 21 grandchildren; two sisters, Ernestina Basaldua of Mercedes and Antonia Lerma of Cuidad Victoria, Mexico.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2003, from 12 noon to 9 p.m. A holy rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Wednesday evening.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 19, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church with Father Horacio Chavarria as celebrant.

Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen, TX.

Alejandro Duran

HARLINGEN, TX — Alejandro Duran went to be with the Lord on June 16, 2003 at the age of 91. He was born April 24, 1912.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rafael and Petra Duran; four brothers, Antonio Duran, Manuel Duran, Estevan Duran and Ignacio Duran.

He is survived by his loving wife Adela Duran of 63 years and by his children, Delia (Joe) Cavazos of Lansing, Michigan, Celia (Emilio) Garcia of Harlingen, Alex (Sylvia) Duran of Harlingen, Petra Gonzalez of Harlingen, Angelica (Ramiro) Garcia of Harlingen, Adela (Juan) Lopez of Harlingen, Eliseo (Nora) Duran of Combes, Sylvia Gutierrez of Harlingen, Joe Duran of Harlingen and Teresa Cortez of Harlingen. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Rafael Duran Jr. of Harlingen.

Chapel service will be held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Chapel with Efrain Duran officiating. Burial will follow to Las Rucias Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Orlando Gutierrez, Efrain Duran, Paul Cavazos, Jason Garcia, Frank Alvarez, Ramiro Garcia Jr. Eliseo Duran Jr.

Eleazar (Kiche) Rodriguez

EL RANCHITO, TX — Eleazar Rodriguez, 72, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2003, at the Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born January 11, 1931 in La Paloma, TX and lived most of his life in El Ranchito. He was a Korean War Veteran.

He is survived by his brothers, Roberto and Ramiro and his guardian, Andres Torres of El Ranchito.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Alfonso.

Rosary services were held Tuesday night at the Thomae Funeral Home on Bowie St. and Funeral Services will be held today, Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in El Ranchito.

Burial will follow at the Torres Family Cemetery. The American Legion Post #205 and the V.F.W. Post #2410 will perform military Honors.

Pallbearers will be Andres Torres, Ricardo Torres, Ramon Hernandez, Carlos Quintanilla, Julio Santana, III and J.R. Jaramillo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie St. San Benito.

Jose Juan Morales

HARLINGEN, TX — Jose Juan Morales was called home to the Lords Kingdom June 17, 2003 at Driscoll Children’s Hospital at the age of 6. He was born November 7, 1996 in Harlingen, TX.

Survivors include parents Jose Manuel Morales and Josefina Nieto; half brothers, Ruben Martinez and Leslie Nieto; paternal grandparents, San Juana Ayala Medrano and Mario Morales Delgado of Monterry N.L., Mexico.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents.

Funeral service will be held today, June 19, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Burial will follow to Ashland Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen.

Jose "Nino" G. Gonzalez

SAN BENITO, TX — Jose "Nino" G. Gonzalez, 62, entered into rest on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center. He was born October 10, 1940 in Matamoroa Tamps, Mexico to Juan Gonzalez, Sr. and Gregoria Garcia.

He enjoyed listening to music, to work around the house and to cook.

He is survived by his wife, Tomasa Rodriguez; children, Veronica (Miguel) Lozoya, Jose Gonzalez, Jr., Juan Jose (Izabel) Gonzalez and Erica Gonzalez; mother, Gregoria Gonzalez; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brothers, Juan Gonzalez, Jose Angel Gonzalez, Arnulfo Gonzalez and Guadalupe Gonzalez, Sr.; sister, Maria Guadalupe Salazar.

Visitation will be held at San Benito Funeral Home from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2003 and on Sunday, June 22, 2003 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary 7 p.m. both nights.

Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Las Rucias 2 p.m., Monday, June 23, 2003. Interment will follow to Las Rucias Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Juan Jose Gonzalez, Jose Gonzalez, Jr., Miguel Lozoya, Jr., Herman Lozoya, Juan Gonzalez, Guadalupe Gonzalez, Jr. and Ediberto Torres.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Bentio,  Texas.

Harry Orin Fike

EDINBURG, TX — Harry Orin Fike, age 46, passed away Thursday evening, June 19, 2003 at his parent’s residence in Edinburg.

He was a lifelong resident and prominent farmer of Edinburg and a member of the First Lutheran Church of Edinburg.

He is survived by his parents, Willard and Anna Fike; three brothers, Michael (Karen) Fike, George (Wendy) Fike, and Sam Fike all of Edinburg; niece and nephews, Rachel (D.J.) Villarreal, Daniel Fike, Joshua (Cassidy) Fike, Adam Fike and Mathew Fike; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 22, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at Skinner Silva Funeral Chapel on West Samano in Edinburg with the family present to greet friends from 4 p.m. to 6 pm.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday morning, June 23, 2003 at the First Lutheran Church in Edinburg with the Rev. Jim Wilkins officiating.

Interment will follow at the Fike Family Cemetery, North of 107 on Skinner Road.

Pallbearers will be Daniel, Joshua, Adam, and Mathew Fike, Joe Vecchio, and Jeremy Salazar.

The family suggest memorial donations be made to the First Lutheran Church, 302 South Sugar Road, Edinburg, TX 78539.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Edinburg.
