Jose L. Mata

SAN BENITO, TX — Jose L. Mata passed away at home on Tuesday, June 24, 2003. He was surrounded by his nine children and other family members at the time of his death.

Mr. Mata was born on October 8, 1917 and was a lifelong resident of San Benito. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He loved to converse with everyone and had a great sense of humor. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.

Mr. Mata was preceded in death by his parents, Secundino and Toribia Mata; his wife, Arminda Mata; his son, Secundino Mata and his brothers, Alfonso and Julian Mata.

He is survived by five sons, Jose Israel Mata of San Benito, Oscar (Mary) Mata and Adalberto Mata of Harlingen, Arturo Mata of Weslaco and Jaime Mata of Austin; four daughters, Estela (Jesus) Hernandez, Ester (Nicolas) Lerma, Arminda (Manuel) Guzman of San Benito and Elvia (Jaime) Castaneda of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Also surviving him are his sisters, Lupita Garcia and Pilar Mata of San Benito, Ofelia Garcia of Mercedes; his brother, Humberto Mata of Elsa; 33 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his sons, Jose Israel, Oscar, Adalberto, Arturo and Jaime Mata and his great grandson, Sergio Mata.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 and wil be held today, Thursday, June 26, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services wil be held on Friday, June 27, 2003 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will then follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Betty E. (Davis) Miller

HARLINGEN, TX — Betty E. (Davis) Miller passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2003. She was born in Abbeville, SC and was raised in West Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, William E. Miller and her parents, George W. and Maude Besinger.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith E. Cartwright and husband,  Jefferson of Harlingen,  Texas; her son, Thomas E. Miller and wife, Maggie of Virginia Beach, VA; and her sister, Brenda G. Chavis and husband, James of Lexington, SC.

Surviving grandchildren include: William J. Cartwright, Rafael Miller and Anastasia Miller.

Betty graduated with honors from Brooklyn Cayce High School in 1959. She served in the US Army Medical Corps from 1959-1961. She married William E. Miller in 1961. They traveled extensively for 24 years while serving in the US Air Force and then settled in Panama City, FL in 1973. Betty began working at the Panama City News Herald as a District Manager, and shortly after, became promoted to Circulation Manager. She remained at the Panama City News Herald until her transfer to the Brownsville Herald in 1992. She retired in 1995 and returned to West Columbia, SC to care for her parents. In 1999, she lost her beloved husband to cancer. In 2000, she moved to Harlingen, TX where she helped her daughter and son-in-law care for their newborn child, and start their medical practice.

Betty loved to read, travel and enjoyed crafts. She also enjoyed being active in her communities. She held many positions in the Order of the Eastern Star in Panama City, FL prior to moving. While in Columbia, SC, she held the positions of past Associate Matron of Elizabeth McDaniel Chapter #115 OES; past Worthy High Priestess of the  White Shrine of Columbia Shrine #6; and a member of Magnolia Court #5, Order of the Amaranth. She took several college courses and earned a certificate in drafting. She was a Girl Scout leader for 12 years, a loyal friend and a wonderful, loving mother.

She died from pulmonary complications resulting from abrupt rupture of her colon secondary to colon cancer. She fought to live for 5½ weeks and was aided by a strong heart, and the support of her loving family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to thank Mr and Mrs Alfredo Ontiveros, Dr Tony Benavidez, Dr Rolando Posada, Dr Ginene Rogler-Brown, Dr Leslie Penn, Dr Indal Seudeal, Dr Mohammad Motiwala, the ER staff and all of the critical care nurses at Harlingen Medical Center for the superb medical care provided to Betty during her illness. You were all so kind and thoughtful.

Betty is returning to Columbia SC to be next to her husband. "Always and Forever" is what they said to each other, so many times.

Visitation hours will be held Friday, June 27, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Columbia, SC.

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of the funeral home on Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jesse D. Simmons of Crossroads World Outreach Center officiating. Burial will follow in South Land Memorial Gardens, Lexington, SC. A Harlingen,  Texas service will be held Saturday, July 12, 2003 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church with a luncheon to follow.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Mont Meta-Restlawn-Cox Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas and Greenlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Columbia, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Maria Reyna Cruz

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria Reyna Cruz, 75, was called by God on Wednesday, June 25, 2003.

She joins her parents, Antonio and Petra Reyna; her sons, Josue and Mike Jr. and most recently her brother, Loreto Reyna.

Mrs. Cruz is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Miguel D. Cruz; children, Ruth (Israel ) Torres, Hector (Angie) Cruz, Elizabeth (Al) Morris, Killeen, Texas, Joel (Patty) Cruz, Israel (Sylvia) Cruz, Corina (Jerry) Penuelas, Irma (Mike) Capricciuolo, Bedford,  Texas, Jaime (Diana) Cruz, and Javier (Mary) Cruz; brothers, Jose Reyna, Antonio Reyna; and sister, Maria De La Luz Reyna. She is also survived by brothers-in-law, Rev. Elias (Celia) Cruz, Rev. David (Olivia) Cruz, Gudberto Cruz, Samuel (Maria) Cruz; and sister-in-law, Rev. Noemi Gonzalez.

She is preceded in death by her sisters, Catalina Mendez, Vita Camarrillo, Santos Camarrillo; and brother, Loreto Reyna.Her family will remember her as a loving and giving grandmother to 18 grandchildren and great grandmother to 16 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Cruz was born in the mountain community of San Juan Bautista, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on April 22, 1928. After helping her parents for years, she married her husband Miguel D. Cruz in July 7th, 1942. Mrs. Cruz would have celebrated her 61st wedding anniversary in two weeks.

Mrs. Cruz dedicated all her life and love to her family by providing a loving home through her hard work and commitment. She was employed as a seamstress with Beall’s Department Stores for 30 years and her talent created wedding gowns and women’s clothing for many years.

Mrs. Cruz’s love of God blessed her as a dedicated member of her church and through her hard work helped raise up the Good News Assembly of God Church pastored by Rev. Samuel Rodriguez.

Later, with the same dedication to God, she provided ministry and helped to raise up Templo Bethel Asamblea De Dios in Mercedes,  Texas pastored by her husband, Rev. Miguel D. Cruz.

She was very active with the church construction fund raising as a long time active member of the Women’s and Missionary Ministries.

She continued her dedication to God by attending bible school and obtaining her Ministerial Certificate.

Mrs. Cruz will be lovingly remembered as a hard working mother and wife with a generous giving heart to her children, church and her community.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, June 27, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 9 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Hector Cruz, Joel Cruz, Israel Cruz, Jaime Cruz, Javier Cruz, and Israel Torres.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Daniel (Dan) Newton Callaway

PORT ISABEL, TX — Services for Daniel (Dan) Newton Callaway, 75, will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 28, 2003 at Rosser Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2003 at Rosser Funeral Home.

Mr. Callaway passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas. He was born December 18, 1927 in  Johnson County to Preacher (Jimmy Joe) Callaway and Alyne  Johnson Callaway.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and he was a Mason. Mr. Callaway was a retired used car manager with Tip-O-Tex in Brownsville,  Texas. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Pinkie Callaway of Port Isabel; daughter, Leta Callaway of Port Lavaca; sister, Barbara Rousseau and husband Richard of Joshua; brother, Don Callaway and wife Shirley of Cleburne; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Chipper Callaway.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Patricia Jane Dalton

LOS FRESNOS, TX — A memorial service to honor the life of Patricia Jane Dalton will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003, 11 a.m. at the Los Fresnos United Methodist Church, 402 S. Arroyo Blvd., Los Fresnos, TX 78566. Patricia Jane Dalton, beloved wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to be home with the Lord on April 10, 2003, at the age of 76 at her home at 5309 Guava, Harlingen,  Texas 78522.

She will be deeply missed by her loving husband Warren R. Dalton, Jr. of Harlingen; sister, Ann Hurtig of Clarksville, CA; and her family: daughter, Gina Milbourn of Overland Park, Kansas; sons, Mark Dalton of Austin,  Texas, Bill Dalton of Tucson, Arizona, Richard Dalton of St. Charles, Missouri, Bob Dalton of Fort Myers, Florida, Dick Dalton of  Jefferson City, Missouri, David Dalton of Lake Ozark, Missouri, and Don Dalton of San Antonio,  Texas; along with 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was born to Bert and Cletys Dingle in Dayton,  Washington on January 15, 1927 and spent her childhood years there. She was an accomplished musician with the violin and the trombone, won numerous State awards, and received training at the Interlochen School of Music. She attended the University of  Washington.

In 1961, while living in Columbia, Missouri, she began working as a bridal consultant for Suzanne’s, Inc. On March 18, 1963 she married her loving husband Warren R. Dalton, Jr. and they united 2 families into one. The new family resulting from the union continues to be a loving and caring family to this day. She was blessed with a wonderful business since and worked side by side with her husband in developing three retail clothing stores. While in Columbia she became a member of P.E.O., most recently as an active member of Chapter EV in Brownsville,  Texas.

During retirement she excelled in artistic endeavors including needlework, stained glass, interior decorating, and oil painting. Most important to her were her family, her friends, and her church. She served the church in many capacities over the years and was among the earliest in the Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church to complete the Walk to Emmaus.

The family wishes to express its sincerest thanks to Hospice Care, especially Annette Bracken, and to the many that helped during her illness. Friend and neighbor Nicole Garric was a true blessing during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to: Los Fresnos United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 518, Los Fresnos,  Texas 78566 or Sandi Jo Funk Hospice for Patient/Family Assistance, Valley Baptist Medical Foundation, P.O. Box 2588, Harlingen,  Texas 78551-9982.

Funeral services and burial were held on April 14, 2003 at Fairview United Methodist Church in Columbia, Missouri. A memorial service to honor her life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003, 11 a.m. at the Los Fresnos United Methodist Church, 402 S. Arroyo Blvd., Los Fresnos,  Texas 78566. Raymond Dale Gilbert

HARLINGEN, TX — Raymond Dale Gilbert, age 72, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen. Ray was born in Houston on April 18, 1931.

He was Veteran of the United States Army and a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889 and of the American Legion of La Feria.

Ray is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; and 3 daughters and 2 sons, they include: Dean (Brenda) Moss of La Feria, Sharon (Bill) Traylor of Weslaco, Debra (Jim) Woodson of Plano, Kathy (Hollis) Swanberg of Lyford and Randy (Marilyn) Gilbert of Brownsville. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Dallas Gilbert and his younger sister, Norma Bray.

Memorial services will be Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel at 701 N. Bowie St. in San Benito,  Texas. Phone #399-9992.

Maria Estela Martinez

RIO HONDO, TX — Maria Estela Martinez, age 79, entered the Lords Kingdom Thursday,June 26, 2003 at her residence.

She was a lifetime resident and member of a Rio Hondo Pioneer Family. She was a member of Spirit of Praise Church.

She is survived by daughters, Alicia Guerrero (Jose Guadalupe) of Rio Hondo, Frances Martinez (Tomas) of Pleasanton, TX, Janie Martinez of Harlingen, Maria Tello (Juan) of Rio Hondo, and Irene Eskue (Buster) of Edgewood, TX; sons, Antonio (Jovita) Ortega of San Benito, Refugio Martinez of Harlingen, Jose (Alicia) Martinez of Rio Hondo, Cisifredo (Diana) Martinez of San Antonio, Gilberto (Dorinda) Martinez of Rio Hondo; 31 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Domingo Ortega of Lozano and Victor Ortega of Rio Hondo.

Visitation was held Friday June 27, 2003 with a prayer service that evening.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Chapel of the Holy Spirit with Pastor Mike Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow to Rio Hondo City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ismael Martinez, Joe Guerrero, Antonio Ortega, Refugio Martinez, Jose Martinez, Cisifredo Martinez and Jesse Eskue.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen, TX.

Hilario "Bill" Martinez

MERCEDES, TX — Hilario "Bill" Martinez, 91, passed away Thursday afternoon at Valley Grande Manor in Weslaco.

Mr. Martinez is preceded in death by his first wife, Beatriz Loya Martinez; a brother, Agapito Montez; a sister, Celia Salazar; and a grandson, Albert Martinez.

He is survived by his wife, Dominga Martinez of Mercedes; one son, Jose L. Martinez of Mercedes; four step-sons, Rufino Dominguez, Jr. of San Antonio, Federico Dominguez and Barney Dominguez both of Mercedes, and Ricardo Dominguez of Immokalee, FL; three step-daughters, Eva Estrada of Mercedes, Marie Dominguez of Weslaco and Rosalinda Dominguez of Elsa. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Esmeralda (Lee) Wallace of Harlingen and Jose Martinez, Jr. of Mercedes; five great-grandchildren, Mark Martinez, Bryan Martinez, Derek Martinez, Albert James Wallace and April Katherine Wallace.

Visitation will be held Saturday 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. - 9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited both nights at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes, burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Arrangements are under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.
