Leah Estelle Adkisson Hunter

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Leah Hunter was born March 2, 1905 in Jewett,  Texas, and died July 1, 2003 in Mason,  Texas. She was the fourth of five children born to  Jefferson Davis Adkisson, Sr., and Iva Lillian Price Adkisson, all of whom preceded her in death.

Her parents, the Methodist Church, and rural Jewett nurtured and educated Leah, preparing her to attend Lon Morris College in Jacksonville at age 17. She began teaching at the Jewett elementary school following her first year of college and completed the requirements for a teaching certificate and an Associate of Arts degree by attending college classes during the next three summers. She had met Wilbur Morris Hunter while at Lon Morris College, and their courtship continued "long distance" as he lived in Brownsville,  Texas. They married in Jewett in 1927, and Leah moved to Brownsville where she continued to teach in various elementary schools. She and Wilbur were faithful participants in the worship and activities of the First United Methodist Church. Her teaching career was interrupted by the births of twin daughters Jean and Joan in 1932 and younger daughter Jane in 1934. She resumed teaching in 1939 at Clearwater Grammar School (now named Central) at the fifth grade level, and that became her speciality. In 1950 she moved to the new Los Ebanos Elementary School (now named Robert Martin) and continued to teach fifth grade students until her retirement in 1963. During the next three year she taught fifth-graders at the Episcopal Day School. When Wilbur retired in 1969, they spent several years traveling about visiting relatives who lived in various places across the United States. Leah was always thrilled to see the beautiful scenery.

She became a member of Chapter BU, P.E.O Sisterhood, in 1950 and of Alpha Mu Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in 1956. She was an active participant, serving in every office and on many committees over the next several decades. She also was an integral part of the Lamplighters Circle of the Methodist Church. A close-knit group of church friends gathered frequently in the home and were an important part of Hunter life. She and Wilbur were stalwats in service to the church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception held at the Methodist Church shortly before his death in 1977.

Leah continued to live in their home on Highland Avenue until 1993 when she moved to Mason,  Texas, to live in an apartment attached to the home of daughter Jane Fowler. She joined the Methodist Church there, and by 1998 was its oldest active member, never missing activities unless her health prevented her attendance. She was vitally interested in the activities of her family, her church friends, and her organizations and hosted frequently in her home. Leah was always a good neighbor and enjoyed knowing those who lived near her. She often traveled many miles to witness performances of and presentations to her children and, later grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an artist with a sewing machine, knitting needles, or a crochet hook. Many of her creations beautify the homes of family members and friends. She was, indeed, the "wind beneath our wings."

She is survived by Jean Hunter Traster and her husband Elden Douglas, Joan Hunter Reiff and her husband, Irving Ray (Budd), Jane Hunter Fowler and her husband, Bruce LeRoy; ten grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Doug Traster, Jefferey Traster, Mickey Reiff, Burt Reiff, and Bruce Fowler and grandsons-in-law John Haines, Ken Johnson, and Dwayne Anderson. Officiating at the memorial service will be the Rev. Dr. Dale A. Schultz of Round Rock, Leah’s grandson-in-law.

The service, under the direction of the San Benito Funeral Home, will be held at Buena Vista Cemetery Saturday, July 5, 2003 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the the P.E.O Project for Continuing Education, a scholarship program in which Leah was very interested.

Memorials may be sent to Nancy Hodgson (5177 Sugar Mill Rd, Brownsville 78526) who will forward them to P.E.O headquarters.
