Robert Taliaferro Clore

MERCEDES — Robert Taliaferro Clore, born in Chicago, Illinois on May 12, 1914 to Wallace Bondurant Clore and Margaret Edith Ward Clore, passed away on August 7, 2003.

He attended Northwestern University and Georgetown College, Kentucky. On April 26, 1942 he married Jeanne Richards Clore of Albion, Michigan. He served in the Signal Corps during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific.

He raised his family in Ionia, Michigan where he owned a metal stamping plant, a metal plating shop, a bowling alley, and electrical contracting company and several other businesses. He was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Ionia, Michigan where he served as Treasurer and Sunday school Superintendent. He also served as postmaster. He retired to Mercedes, TX in 1972 where he was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Weslaco. He will be remembered for his love of golf, great sense of humor and love of life.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Richards Clore; sons Robert Taliaferro Clore and wife Dorothy of Alden, Michigan, Richard Walker Clore and wife Adele, of Pflugerville,  Texas, Daniel Russell Clore and wife Lana, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandchildren David Lee Clore and wife Angela of Cary, North Carolina, Christopher Stephen Clore and wife Maureen of Alden, Michigan, Jean Louise Clore of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Shana Louise Clore and Alicia Lynn Clore both of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Richard Louis Clore, Elizabeth Anne Clore and Cecilia Ruth Clore all of Pflugerville,  Texas; great-grandchildren, Madison Alexander Clore and Andrew Christian Clore both of Cary, North Carolina and Ethan Christopher Clore and Emma Louise Clore both of Alden, Michigan; and numerous friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12 at the recreation hall of Llano Grande Park in Mercedes,  Texas.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home, 900 W. 4th, Weslaco,  Texas.

Christopher Lee Sanchez

LYFORD — Christopher Lee Lewis Sanchez, 19, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2003 near Raymondville,  Texas. He was born December 17, 1983 in Raymondville to his loving parents Miguel and Rebecca (Tagle) Sanchez.

He is survived by his parents Miguel and Rebecca Sanchez of Lyford; one daughter Alondra Lee Sanchez; his paternal grandparents Justino and Ofelia Sanchez of Lyford; one brother Mike Sanchez also of Lyford.

A rosary will be recited Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be Tuesday 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lyford with burial in the Lyford Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home, Raymondville, 956-689-2151.

Frances May Vernon

LIMA, OH — Frances May Vernon, 72, passed away August 7, 2003. She was born November 8, 1930 in Lucerne, IN to Frederick L. and Helen Risley Watts.

Mrs. Vernon was a homemaker; she was also a member of Central Christain Church, Lima, Order of Eastern Star and  White Shrine of Logansport, IN/Culpepper Angels; Confederate Air Force and Life member of Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, TX.

Survivors include her husband, William Vernon; two sons, Thomas Lee (Patty) Vernon of Lima, OH, and Frederick R. (Roberta) Vernon of Lima, OH; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth A. Martin of Logansport, IN; sisters, Lura Mar Stuart of Boston, MA; 7 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, William L. Vernon (d) 1978.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2003 at Chiles & Sons-Laman Shawnee Chapel with Rev. Terry Davy officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Logansport, IN.

No visitions will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society/Shriners Childrens Hospital in Cincinnati.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Chiles & Sons-Laman Shawnee Chapel.

Andrea Ramon

SANTA MARIA, TX — Andrea Ramon, 77, passed away Sunday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

She is survived by four sons, Orlando Ramon of Santa Maria, Jorge (Gloria) Ramon of Alpine, TX, Roberto Ramon of Lafayette, LA, Armando Ramon of Austin, TX; eight daughters, Mariana (Mario) Garza of Ruskin, FL, Ofelia (Ruben) Diaz of Santa Rosa, Santos (Pedro) Carmona of Weslaco, Candelaria Solis, and Irma (Jose) Villarreal, both of Salinas, CA, Julia Fuentes of Austin, TX, Hermelinda (Rolando) Uribe of Edcouch, Esmeralda Leal of Santa Maria; also surviving are a brother, Guillermo Villalon of Reynosa; a sister, Maria Del Socorro V. Sevedra of Reynosa; thirty-two grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel. A rosary will be prayed Thursday at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Ann Catholic Church in Santa Maria. Interment will follow at El Zacatal Cemetery near Santa Maria.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Cecil E. Burns

HARLINGEN, TX — Cecil E. Burns, 80, passed away at his residence in Harlingen on Monday, August 11, 2003.

Cecil was born to Nora and Oyer Burns on December 25, 1922 in Harlingen.

He joined the US Army during World War II and served in General Pattons Third Army during the occupation of Germany.

He married Lois Vaughan in 1947 having celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1997. He had worked as a supervisor for the Hygeia Milk Co. retiring in 1987 after service of 39 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, a charter member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889, and a member of the VFW and the American Legion Post #205. Cecil was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting and fishing and participated many years in local fishing tournaments. He is survived by his brothers, O.T., Ray, George, and Frank all of Harlingen; sisters, Thelma Jean Guiese of Galveston, TX and Ethelene Howe of Tyler, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Cecil was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lois.

Visitation hours will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, August 14, 2003.

Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 10 a.m., Friday, August 15, 2003 with the Rev. Don Higginbotham officiating. Burial will follow at La Feria Cemetery on Rabb Road.

Pallbearers will be Levi Burns, Andy Burns, Tyler Burns, Don Boykin, John Doster, and Bobby Burns. Memorial donations may be made to the Elks Lodge #1889 in Harlingen or to the First Baptist Church Building Fund also in Harlingen.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Edward Lumbreras

AUSTIN, TX — Edward Lumbreras, 38, entered into rest August 9, 2003 in Austin,  Texas. He was formerly from Mercedes,  Texas and lived in Austin,  Texas. He served his country with the US Air Force.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Von Noyes of Preston, Idaho and Isidro Lumbreras of Mercedes, TX.

He is survived by his mother, Marian (Ofelio) Muniz of Harlingen, TX; his father, Enrique Lumbreras of Mercedes, TX; brother, Jaime Lumbreras of Preston, Idaho; sister, Melinda Lumbreras of San Antonio, TX; step-brothers, Ofelio (Sonny) Muniz III of Brownsville, TX, Ron Muniz of Lake Charles,  Louisiana, Christopher Muniz of Edinburg, TX; grandmothers, nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Edward was very loving with a heart of gold. He brought joy and happiness to many lives. He will be greatly missed.

Visitations will begin Friday morning at 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Chapel services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, August 15, 2003. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park with full military honors under the auspice of the American Legion Post 205.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F Street, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

James A. Stensland (Jim/Curly)

HARLINGEN, TX — James A. Stensland, age 47, passed away suddenly August 11, 2003.

He was a graduate of Harlingen High School and began his career with H-E-B while still in school. This career lasted 25 years and covered many stores throughout the Valley.

He is survived by the "Love of His Life" Angie San Miguel; her daughter, Lupita Estrada; his parents, Al and Gerry Stensland Sr.; one sister, Sue (Ken) Baker; one brother, Al (Sarah) Stensland Jr.; five nieces and nephews, many friends and extended family.

Visitations will be held Thursday, August 14, 2003 beginning at 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street, Harlingen.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel of 1217 South F Street, Harlingen.

Carlos R. Munoz

RIO HONDO, TX — Carlos R. Munoz, 75, of Rio Hondo,  Texas passed away at his residence on August 12, 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Elvira G. Munoz of Rio Hondo; 6 daughters, Yolanda M. Gonzalez of San Benito, Delia M. Santillana of San Benito, Noelia Munoz of Rio Hondo, Tina M. Guajardo of Lyford, Susana M. Ybarra of Rio Hondo, and Consuelo M. Gonzales of Dallas; 2 sons, Lucio Munoz and Edwardo Munoz both of Rio Hondo; 24 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Conrado Munoz of Harlingen; 2 sisters, Dolores Garza of Corpus Christi, and Maria M. Hernandez of Harlingen.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Enrique and Andrea Munoz and 5 brothers and 1 sister.

Visitation will be held 12 noon to 9 p.m., Thursday, August 14, 2003 with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, August 15, 2003 at St. Helens Catholic Church in Rio Hondo. Interment will follow to Las Yescas Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rocky Guajardo, Johnny Gonzalez, Joey Pena, Ramiro Beltran, Heraquio Ortega, Eddie Munoz and Lucio Munoz.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas. 956-399-1331.

Abraham J. Solis

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Mr. Abraham J. Solis, 84, of Los Fresnos,  Texas passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2003.

Mr. Solis was born in Brownsville,  Texas on April 12, 1919, the son of Abraham S. and Paula G. Solis. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946 and is a veteran of W W II. During his tenure in the Army he was awarded numerous citations.

Mr. Solis was a Businessman and life long resident of Los Fresnos,  Texas. Mr. Solis served the City of Los Fresnos,  Texas for 23 years in the capacity of City Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem.

He is a member of the American Legion Post 632 of Los Fresnos,  Texas and Past Post Cammander.

His wife of 66 years, Della M. Solis and his three children survive him, Ida Olga Solis of Austin,  Texas, Linda (Jose Luis) Rodriguez of Brownsville,  Texas and Abraham J. "Sonny" (Mary) Solis, Jr. of Millington, Tennessee. He also has 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sara Rosa (Anselmo) Montemayor of Corpus Christi,  Texas and numerous nephews and nieces survive him.

Mr. Solis will be buried with Full military Honors.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2003 at Darling Mouser Funeral Home with a Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 2 p.m., Friday, August 15, 2003 at Immaculate Cathedral. Interment to follow at Brownsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jose Luis Rodriguez, Ruben Garcia III, Roberto Garcia, Abraham Solis III, Arturo Cano, and Roger Henderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Abraham J. "Sonny" Solis Jr., Michael Blucher, Mahlin Musgrove, Reynaldo Guillen, Jr., and Harry Watson.

In addition to any flower arrangements for the funeral service, contributions may also be made in Memory of Mr. Solis to St. Cecilia Catholic Church 506 W. Ocean Blvd., Los Fresnos,  Texas 78566.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Darling Mouser Funeral Home.

Catarino B. Lara

HARLINGEN, TX — Catarino B. Lara, 81, entered into rest on Thursday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Lara was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and worked faithfully for 43 years at the Hygia Dairy Company of Harlingen.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Guadalupe V. Lara; children, Hermelinda (Facundo) Ramirez, Feliz Lydia) Lara, Manuel (Rosa) Lara, Josefina Quiroga all of Harlingen; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Pedro and Felipe Lara; and sisters, Maria Velasquez and Marianita Vela. Visitation was held on Friday, August 15, 2003 from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary prayed at 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home, today, Saturday August 16, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Mathias Shanley as the celebrant.

Interment will follow at Combes Cemetery in Combes, TX. Pallbearers will be Leonel Ramirez, Felix Lara, Jr., Jesse Lara, Jaime Lara, Saul Morales and Antonio Nino.

Mr. Lara was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Rachel Manrique

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Rachel Manrique, 54, of Los Fresnos,  Texas passed away at Valley Regional Medical Center on August 14, 2003.

Rachel was born and raised in her home town Los Fresnos,  Texas. She was well loved by her family. She is preceded in death by her father, Florentino Manrique (November 9, 1990); and mother, Teodoisa Manrique (July 25, 1972); 2 brothers, David Manrique (November 7, 1986) and Teclo Manrique (March 23, 2001).

She is survived by her sister, Ruth Ramirez; 5 brothers, Simon Manrique, Samuel Manrique, Daniel Manrique, Florentino Manrique, and Josue Manrique.

Visitation will begin today, August 16, 2003, Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, August 17, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. with prayer services beginning at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2003 at Siloe Iglesia Pentocoastal in Los Fresnos,  Texas.

Interment will follow to Buena Vista Cemetery in Brownsville,  Texas. "Rachel will be missed by all who loved her. May she rest in peace." Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, San Benito, 399-1331.
