Doris Johnston

HARLINGEN, TX — Doris Allene Johnston, 83, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at her home in Harilngen.

A devoted wife and mother, Doris is survived by her husband of 65 years, Vernon C. Johnston; sons, Robert/Bob (Barbara) and Vernon C., Jr./Tip (Ann) all of Harlingen; daughter, Nancy (David) Long of Tyler; grandson, Brent Johnston of Austin; granddaughters, Rhonda (Steve) Carlin of Round Rock, Carrie Johnston of Harlingen, Melissa (Brian) South of Big Sandy; great grandson, Max Carlin; brother, Doyle (Wilma) Grice of Big Spring.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Icy Grice; infant son, Lonnie Allen Johnston and grandson, Glenn Austin Johnston.

Born Juanuary 9, 1920 in Idalou,  Texas, Doris attended high school in Santa Rosa and Big Spring,  Texas. Doris and Venon returned to Harlingen in 1945 where she actively served as PTA president/s at her children’s elementary, high school and for City Council PTA. A member of First Baptist Church in Harlingen, she sang in the choir, served as a greeter and participated in Sunday School and Women’s Bible Study. After raising a family, Doris returned to school, earned her LVN certificate and coordinated the Candy Stripers program for Valley Baptist Hospital. A member of the Harlingen Art Forum, Doris enjoyed oil painting, collecting antique jewelry, traveling, studying geology and genelogy and history.

Visitation hours will be held Sunday, September 28, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 29, 2003, 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen with Dr. Don Higginbotham officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Wallace Athley, Chris Hall, Jimmy Hough, Tom Lockhart, C.H. Hamilton, Bob Cole, Tom Coyle, and Dennis Mitchell.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sandell Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.

The family request that memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 E. Van Buren, Harlingen,  Texas 78550 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1000 Camelot Dr. Suite 6005, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Sue Hawkins

March 8, 1920 – Sept. 26, 2003

HARLINGEN — Sue Hawkins of Harlingen spent a lifetime serving her Lord Jesus Christ, and was called into His presence Friday, September 26, 2003. Born March 8, 1920 in Mansfield, TX to Elizabeth Pribble Patterson and J. W. Patterson. Sue was the fifth of six children. She graduated form Mansfield High School in 1936 and attended North  Texas Agricultural College in Arlington, TX 1937-1938.

Sue married Edwin L. Hawkins on August 26, 1939, and the couple settled in Dallas,  Texas where daughter Suzanne and son E.L. Jr. (Buddy) were born. The young Hawkins family moved to Harlingen in 1945. Ed was involved in various business ventures in lumber, oil & gas, and farming. Sue and Ed were charter members of Chapel by the Sea on South Padre Island as well as Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harlingen, which was their home church. Ed preceded Sue in death on July 27, 1990.

Sue was a devoted student of Holy Scripture and spent a lifetime savoring and fulfilling that passion. She was an avid member of Bible Study Fellowship, graduating from the program in 1998. In recent years she attended bible study groups at the Marine military Academy and Covenant Presbyterian Church. She also belonged to the PEO Sisterhood for many years, serving in Chapters T and BL., and was a charter member of chapter FY.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Ballard, of Comanche, TX; two children, daughter Suzanne Hawkins Mills and husband Scott Mills of Albuquerque, NM; and son Buddy Hawkins and wife Dinah Armstrong Hawkins of Harlingen; grandson Brad Hawkins and granddaughter Courtney Hawkins reside in Dallas. She is beloved by scores of nephews and nieces, great nephews and great nieces. Local survivors are Bob and Marilyn Hawkins, Andy and Vickie Hawkins, and Rick and Nancy Hawkins, all of McAllen.

Visitation at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home will be Monday, September 29, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. Family members will be present to greet those who loved Sue from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial celebration will be held Tuesday, September 30 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Harlingen. Officiating will be Rev. Terry Traylor of Raleigh, North Carolina assisted by Dr. Don Higginbottham.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to P.E.O Chapter FY Continuing Education, 900 Palm Valley Drive West, Harlingen, 78552 or to Chapel by the Sea, P.O.Box 2478, South Padre Island, 78597.

Jesus Chapa Ramos

LA TINA, TX — Jesus Chapa Ramos, 73, passed away on September 25, 2003 in Centerville,  Texas.

Mr. Ramos is survived by his wife Monica Flores of Las Yescas; his children, Jessica Ramos, Becky Ramos, Yolanda Ramos, Ruby Ramos, Francisca Ramos, Jesus Ramos Jr., Dela Ramos and Sara Ramos, Jesus D. and Blas A. Perales; 4 brothers, Melquides Ramos, Aldolfo Ramos, Robert Ramos and David Ramos; 6 sisters, Celia Carranza, Francisca Gonzalez Manuela Cortez, Edna Diaz, Rachel Carranza, and Dora Lea Ramos; numerous nephews, nieces and family members.

Mr. Ramos is preceded in death by his parents Alfonso and Guadalupe Ramos and 3 brothers, Santos Ramos in 2000, Jose M. Ramos in 1994, and Alfonso Ramos Jr. in 1994.

Visitation will be held to day Sunday, September 28, 2003 from 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home Chapel. Chapel services will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Anacuitas Cemetery in Rio Hondo, TX.

Pallbearers will be Felix Carranza, T. J. Ramos, Adolfo Ramos Jr., Albert Carranza, Alfredo Ramos, and Roman Carranza.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ricardo Ramos, Juan Ramos Jr., J.P.Padilla, and Sonny Ramos.

Guadalupe Villafranco, Jr.

SAN BENITO — Guadalupe Villafranco Jr., 66, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on September 26, 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Perfecta H. Villafranco of San Benito, TX; 9 children, Daniel (Mary) Villafranco of San Benito, TX, Guadalupe Villafranco III of Georgia, Carlos Villafranco of Georgia, Benito Lopez Jr., of Houston, TX, Benedict (Chris) Lopez of Harlingen, TX, Sonya (George) Rios of Brownsville, TX, Sylvia (Adrian) Garcia of San Antonio, TX, Marcelino (Betty) Villafranco of Georgia, Mary Morrison of San Antonio, TX; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews; 3 brothers, Saul (Eufemia) Villafranco of San Benito, TX, Leonel (Leticia) Villafranco of Houston, TX, Alberto (Alicia) Villafranco of San Benito, TX; and 1 sister, Maria Teresa Barrera of San Benito, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Teresa Garcia Villafranco and a brother, Rodolfo Villafranco.

Mr. Villafranco retired from the U.S. Army after serving 25 years of his life for his country, part of his service included 2 tours in Vietnam, earning the following medals; purple heart, national defense service medal, good conduct medal 6th award; combat infantryman badge 1st award; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon w/device (1960); expert badge with rifle bar; parachutist badge-basic. He was also in the land surveying field and his favorite hobby was cooking.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 29, 2003 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary starting at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at Queen of the Universe Catholic Church with interment to follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

The United States Marine Corps will conduct military Honors.

Rafael Gutierrez

HARLINGEN — Rafael Gutierrez, age 31, passed way on Wednesday, September 24, 2003.

He is survived by his wife Nelda Aguilar; children, Rafael Gutierrez Jr., Marcelo Gutierrez, Martin Gutierrez, Nelly L. Gutierrez, and Harley Gutierrez of Harlingen, TX. Parents Sergio and Maria Adelfa Gutierrez of San Benito; brother, Sergio Gutierrez Jr. of San Benito, TX; sisters, Geneva Guerra (Billy Jr.) of La Feria, TX and Patty Flores (Alfonso) of Harlingen, TX; grandmother Rafaela Gutierrez of Harlingen, TX.

Visitation was held on Sunday, September 28, 2003 from 2 – 9 p.m. with a prayer service held at 7:30 p.m.

Chapel services will be held on Monday, September 29, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Chapel with Pastor Leonel Corona officiating from the Church Gracia De Paz. Burial services will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, TX.

Arrangements entrusted to Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home, 2906 Expressway 77/83, Harlingen,  Texas, 78550.

Prorfiro Soto, Jr.

MERCEDES — Porfirio Soto, Jr., 87, passed away at Knapp Medical Center on Sept. 25, 2003.

He is preceded in death by his parents Porfirio Valdez, Sr. & Petra Sanchez Soto; wife Elodia Torres Soto; his brothers Rafael, Santiago, Benito; and sisters Petra S. Villarreal & Rosa S. Garza.

Survivors include his children Dora Mae (Tino) Garcia of Mercedes, Alicia (Pablo) Peralez of Progreso, Yolanda Guerra of WS, Carmen (Teo) Martinez of Mercedes, Robert (Lydia) Soto of Mission, Margarita (Terry ) Kouch of WS, Romeo (Jesse) Soto of WS; 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Sunday and funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes, with burial following at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes.

military honors will be under the auspices of American Legion Post 2410 and V.F.W. Post 205 of Harlingen. Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Paul Michael Posada

PRIMERA, TX — Paul Michael Posada, 25, entered into rest on Monday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Paul was a lifelong resident of Primera. He was a 1996 graduate of Harlingen High School and was presently attending U. T. Pan AM, where he was majoring in music.

Paul is survived by his parents Rafael and Maria Elena Posada of Primera, TX., fiancée Juanita G. Saldana of Harlingen, TX, brothers Ralph (Mari) Posada of Edinburg, TX, Danny (Jessica) Posada of Harlingen, TX, nephews Jovani and Sebastian Posada, paternal grandparents Cosme and Maximinia Posada of Primera, TX, maternal grandmother Elena Martinez of Harlingen and numerous other family members.

Visitation will be held today, Oct. 7, 2003 from 1:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the holy rosary to be prayed at 7:00 PM.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at 1:30 PM for a 2:00 PM Mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Pedro Brisneo as the celebrant.

Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial park Cemetery in Harlingen, TX.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Posada, Danny Posada, Eric Posada, Robert Saldana, Jr., Juan Arredondo and Adrian Posada.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.

Gene Day

HARLINGEN, TX — Gene Day, 70, entered into rest on Sunday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Day is survived by his loving wife, Ana Day of Harlingen, TX; children, Randy Day, Rick Day, Rodney Day; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyliss Vandhekamp, Peggy McCullough, Annie Hudson, Estella Gullett, Darla Eads, Lolita Causey; brothers, Morris Day, William Day; mother-in-law, Alicia Trejo; sister-in-law, Araceli Cespedes and special nieces Jessica and Nancy Guadalupe.

Visitation will be held today, October 7, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Angels with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. with Pastor Armando Escamilla officiating.

Mr. Day will be cremated, honoring his wishes.

Clara Ovenden

HARLINGEN, TX — Clara Helen Corell Ovenden, 97, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

Clara was born December 1, 1905 in Frontier Co., NE to Denman and Edna Corell.

She married Paul Louis Ovenden on July 3, 1927 in McCook, NE. They had two sons.

She and Paul farmed near Cambridge, NE until they retired and moved to Cambridge in 1974. They moved to Harlingen, TX in 1979 and resided there until her death.

She was a member of Afton Church of the Brethern and then joined the Methodist Church when they moved to Cambridge. She was a faithful Christian and dearly loved her family.

She is preceded in death by her father, Denman; mother, Edna; sister, Hazel; son, Richard; and two grandsons, Randy Ovenden and Dan Ovenden.

She leaves to mourn her son, Denman Ovenden and wife, Jodie of Craig, CO; daughter-in-law, Fern Ovenden of Austin, TX; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many friends she had through her life. Clara will be interred at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Elionso Cantu, Jr.

PRIMERA, TX — Elionso Cantu, Jr., passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2003, at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

He is survived by two sisters, Elvira Cortina and Carolina Cantu, both of Harlingen; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Elionso is preceded in death by his parents, Elionso Cantu, Sr. and Maria Garcia Cantu; two brothers, Eliezar Cantu and Jesus Maria Cantu; and a sister, Beatriz Cantu Lucio. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home with a rosary to be held at 7 p.m.

Deacon Juan Valenzuela will be the celebrant for the Funeral Service at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Harlingen on Wednesday, October 8, 2003, and interment to follow at Las Rucias Cemetery.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.
