Leobardo Mendoza, Jr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Leobardo Mendoza, Jr., 54, entered into rest on Monday at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

Mr. Mendoza was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and was preceded in death by his daughter, Lorena Mendoza.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Maria Mendoza of Harlingen; children, Hortencia (Mario) Perez of Santa Rosa, TX, Leonardo Mendoza of Harlingen, TX, Lidia (Dennis) Beach of Las Vegas, NV, Luis Alberto Mendoza, Leticia Mendoza, Linda Mendoza all of Harlingen, TX; 7 grandchildren; mother, Hortencia Marroquin of Donna, TX; brothers, Armando Ochoa of Weslaco, TX, Juan Contreras of Mexico; sisters, Laura Ybarra, Rosa Olivarez and Yolanda Beltran.

Visitation will be held today, November 12, 2003, from 10 AM until 9 PM at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary to be prayed at 7 PM.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Thursday, November 13, 2003 at 9:30 AM for a 10 AM Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Mathias Shanley as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Combes Cemetery.

Pallbearers will Leonardo Mendoza, Luis Alberto Mendoza, Mario Perez, Dennis Beach, Robert Espinoza and Robert Marroquin. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Kenneth W. Thompson

SAN BENITO, TX — Kenneth Warren Thompson, 80, passed away at Harlingen Medical Center on Saturday, November 8, 2003. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirlee Thompson of San Benito and one son, Kenneth K. Thompson, of Harlingen.

His son, Terry R. Thompson preceded him in death in 1991.

He was born in Harlingen, raised in California, and returned to San Benito in 1948. He was past Commander of the American Legion and Chef De Gare of the 40/8, current member of the Elks Lodge. He was retired from the U.S. Post Office in San Benito. Visitation was held yesterday (Tuesday) at Thomae Funeral Home Chapel in San Benito. Chapel services will be held today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito. Private entombment will follow at Mont Meta Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito 78586. 399-9992.

Richard Donald Grantham

CLARKSVILLE, TX — Richard Donald Grantham, 87, Clarksville,  Texas passed away November 8, 2003.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 12, 2003, 2 p.m., in the Lindeman Chapel at the Clarksville Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito,  Texas. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Altum Grantham of Clarksville; daughter, Wanda Lou Dahl and husband, Maurice of Mancos, CO; grandson, R. Craig Miser and wife, Pamela of Rockwall, TX; 2 great grandchildren, Courtney Renee and Clayton Ryan Miser; sister, Mary Ruth Hartzog of Harlingen; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Grantham was an owner of a construction company, a rancher, and a veteran of W W II.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home, Inc. 100 West College Avenue, P.O. Box 638, Clarksville,  Texas 75426. 903-427-2244.

Juan Zuniga

ELSA, TX — Juan Zuniga, 92, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2003 at his residence, following a brief illness.

He was born in Donna, TX to Tiofilo and Antonia (Mendoza) Zuniga.

He was a longtime Mid-Valley resident and area farmer.

He is survived by his daughters, Antonia Martinez and Beatrice Alvarez, both of Donna, Janie Loya of Harlingen and Maria Zuniga of Elsa; his sons, Bonifacio Zuniga and Esteban Zuniga, both of Elsa. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and 13 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, four sisters, and his wife, Teresa Zuniga.

Graveside services and interment will be held today, Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco with Elder Arnoldo Garcia of Jehovah’s Witness spanish church in Elsa officiating.

Serving as pallbearers will be Rodolfo Zuniga, Adrian Alvarez, Roel Loya, Eric Luebanos, Jay Valdez, and R.C. Zepeda. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Marcos G. Verdin

WESLACO, TX — Marcos G. Verdin, 73, passed away to be with the Lord, Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen after a brief, but heroic battle with cancer.

Dad went down fighting until the end just like the Santa Rosa Warrior Football Teams.

He faithfully followed the Warriors in 1994, 1998 – 2001 & 2003, but he rejoiced greatly during their playoff years in 1993 and 2002. Our family has a special bond with the state of Michigan where Dad spent 35 years working for General Motors Corp. in Flint, MI until his retirement in March of 1993.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Marcos & Teodora Guzman Verdin; and siblings.

He is survived by his loving wife, Adela Verdin of Weslaco, TX; 1 son, Marcos Verdin Jr. (Norma) of Sebastian, TX; 4 daughters, Maricela V. Garza (Sem) of Santa Rosa, TX, Maria Teresa Castellano (Alfredo) of Kingsville, TX, Rev. Marilanda V. Torres (Joe Frank) of Weslaco, TX & Marena Thelma V. Garza (Elias) of Richland Hills, TX; also surviving are 12 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Sunday, November 23, 2003 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. & Monday, November 24, 2003 from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco – Chapel of The Angels.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 A.M. today, November 25, 2003 at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco – Chapel of The Angels.

Officiating will be Rev. Marilanda V. Torres. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Sem Garza, Elias Garza, Alfredo Castellano, Samuel R. Garza, Ruben O. Garza & Jacob Garza. Honorary pallbearers will be Marcos Verdin Jr., Joe Frank Torres, Benjamin Castellano, Victor Manuel Mata & Arturo Camacho.

Jimmie W. Grissom

HARLINGEN, TX — Jimmie W. Grissom, 85, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen,  Texas.

He was born February 21, 1918 in Houston,  Texas to Jimmy Waldrum and Lillian (Nye) Grissom. Mr. Grissom, was a W W II Vetarn, longtime resident of Raymondville until the 1950’s, Grissom Brothers Gospel Music Ministries Pioneer, and First Baptist Church in Combes.

Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church Outreach Program.

He is survived by his three sons, William Eugene (Irene) Grissom of Harlingen, Jimmy Waldrum (Shela) Grissom of Bennett, Colorado, and Patrick Dale (Alicia) Grissom of Blanco, TX; one brother, Mickey Grissom of Onlasko, TX; three sisters, Bonnie Long, Vivian Wyatt and Norma all of Houston. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., November 26, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Combes with Bob Cole officiating. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Jose O. Lara

LOS FRESNOS, TX — Jose O. Lara, 87, entered into rest on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at his residence. He was born March 20, 1916 in Jalisco, Mexico.

Jose was a migrant worker for many years. He enjoyed playing cards and dominos. Jose also enjoyed listening to mariachi music especially Antonio "Tony" Aguilar.

He was very happy being outside in the garden picking chile piquin (hot pepper).

Survivors include his children, Jesus (Maria) Lara, Catarino Lara, Maria D. (Heriberto) Garcia, Jose (Socorro) Lara, Jr., Juan (Angelita) Lara and Maria Felix (Genaro) Lopez; 32 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren; and one brother, Vicente Lara. Visitation will be held at the San Benito Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2003.

Funeral services will be held at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 26, 2003. Interment will follow to Los Cuates Cemetery in Los Fresnos.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Edith G. Keener

MERCEDES, TX — Edith Gladys Keener, age 92, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2003, at her residence.

She was a resident of Mercedes,  Texas since 1939. She was a member of the Home Demonstration in Mercedes,  Texas, she was a member of the Church of Christ in La Feria,  Texas, and was a true homemaker that will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Billy Joe Keener (Alice) Harlingen,  Texas; daughter, Lora Jean Payne (Maynard) of Mercedes,  Texas; sister, Trudy Stansbury of Rio Hondo, TX; grandchildren, Billy Ray, Don, Wayne, David, Linda and Ruby Lee, Tony, Betty Jean; 12 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Chapel from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral procession will depart the funeral home on Friday, November 28, 2003 at 1 p.m. for graveside service to be held at 2 p.m., at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco,  Texas. Officiating will be Pastor Olie Pyle from the Church of Christ La Feria,  Texas.Serving as pallbearers will be Don Keener, Robert Vineyard, allen Schabow, Stacy Allen Davidson, Eric Clausen, and Tony Winslow. Serving as Honorary pallbearers will be Butch Winslow, Tony Nix, Tom Bishop, Ben Gonzalez, and Billy Ray keener.

"Our love goes to these special people, Laura, De Lora, Brandi, Staci, Janice and Virginia."

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Jose Rodriguez

HARLINGEN/GALVESTON, TX — Jose Angel Rodriguez (San Martin) age 54, entered eternal rest November 24, 2003.

He is preceded in death by his father, Reyes Rodriguez Sr.

He is survived by one son, Celestino (Tino) Rodriguez; his mother, Nieves Belman Rodriguez; five brothers and sisters, Reyes Rodriguez Jr., Juana Basaldua, Refugio Rodriguez, Carlos Rodriguez, and Alfredo Rodriguez. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitations will be begin today

at 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM with prayer of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM.

Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Eusebio Martinez as celebrant.

Interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Memorial Park with full military honors under the auspice of American Legion Post 205 and V.F.W. Post 2410.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapels, 1217 S. F Street, Harlingen,  Texas.

Maria E. Guillen

PRIMERA, TX — Maria Esperanza Guillen, 67, entered into rest on Tuesday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mrs. Guillen is survived by her loving husband, Jose Guillen; daughters, Maria Baez, Maria Francisca Guillen, Esperanza Guiilen, Alicia Guillen; sons, Jose Guillen, Jesus Guillen; 14 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson; sister, Virginia Gonzalez; and brother, Jesus Gonzalez.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 from 4 PM until 9 PM at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary prayed at 7 PM.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home today, Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at 1:30 PM for a 2 PM Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX. Pallbearers will be her family and friends. Maria was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Willard W. Graham

HARLINGEN, TX/CALIFORNIA, MO — Willard W. Graham, 67, California, MO died Friday, November 21, 2003 in California, MO.

He was born September 5, 1936 in Boonville, MO the son of Lilburn and Alma Faye Elliott Graham. His mother preceded him in death and his father survives at Clarksburg, MO.

He was married June 4, 2000 in Las Vegas, NV to Judith Teske who survives in Harlingen, TX. He owned several businesses and was an auctioneer.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Harlingen, TX and was the chairman of food pantry at the church. He was a 1954 graduate of California High School. Other survivors include 1 son, Wayne Graham with his wife, Glenda of Clarksburg, MO; 2 daughters, Cheryl Lynn Cook with her husband, Robert of Lees Summit, MO and Carol McGinnis with her husband, Randy of California, MO; 2 sisters, Joyce Ann Engert of Cape Girardeau, MO and and Wynona Turley of Boonville, MO and 6 grandchildren, Tracy Wolfrum, Michelle Cook, Michael Cook, Kendal Williams, LaCota Graham and Kyleigh Graham.

Memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, California, MO, Sunday, November 30, 2003 at 3:00 P. M. Officiating will be Rev. Ron Roberts and Father Greg Higley.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 30, 2003, 2:00-3:00 P. M. at First Christian Church. Family burial will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to The Family of Willard W. Graham, c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. Oak Street, California, MO 65018.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Service in California, MO.

Otilia Gonzalez

SAN BENITO, TX — Otilia Bolado Gonzalez, 88, passed away at Retama Manor on November 24, 2003.

Mrs. Otilia Gonzalez was a resident of San Benito,  Texas for over 20 years. Also a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Elias Gonzalez of San Benito,  Texas; daughter, Sara Macias Fonseca of San Benito,  Texas; 3 sons, Ramiro (Adela) Gonzalez of Brownsville,  Texas, Jose M. Gonzalez of San Benito,  Texas, and Elias Gonzalez, Jr., of Matamoros Tamp., Mexico; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Visitation will begin 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel. Thursday, November 27, 2003, a Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary starting at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will begin 10 a.m., Friday, November 28, 2003 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church. Interment will follow to San Benito City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ramiro Gonzalez, Jose M. Gonzalez, Elias Gonzalez, Jr., Jose Gonzalez, Manuel Torres, and Juanito Gonzalez. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas 956-399-1331.
